The Loa Civil War
The Loa Civil War is the funnest shit EVER to me!! It’s soooooooooo much fun to think about this!!
I think about this all the time.
My goddamn deviantArt OCs are really just living in my brain rent-free and partying it up in there.
Anyways, let’s discuss the Loa Civil War.
The Loa Civil War is literally an impossible scenario because when Bondye was cooking them up, he built into them a condition that they like making jazz together too much to do battle with each other. This is why they are a jazz band. Bondye knew that if there was even the smallest chance that could pick a fight with each other, it is only a matter of time before SADISM INCARNATE and MISCHIEF INCARNATE start beefing over who gets the remote, and they blow up the entire fucking multiverse! I don’t know about you guys, but I think having to recreate the multiverse would be a real pain in the ass. Bondye does not want to go through that trouble, that’s why the gods are a jazz band.
The Loa Civil War is still endlessly fun to think about. It’s so good because I genuinely think there is a nonzero chance that any one of the Loa gets the W.
This is the Loa Civil War:
Big Papa claps his hands three times or winks once. Everything - and I mean everything - that was ever put into fiction is dead. There are only five boys left standing: Jazzman Santy Claus, Scary Skeleton Man, His Hot Ass Wife, Mother Mary, and a fucking snake. They’re just floating out in a huge void, and then start throwin hands.
The human forms they take are just magic avatars. Normally, they take zero damage if you target that, but I think it’s soooooooo much funnier if one god can hurt another god by targeting its avatar. You literally just see Santy Claus throwin hands with Mother Mary, and they’re blowing up the multiverse doing it.
So let’s get down their battle stats:
ATTACK: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < Big Papa < The Baron-Maman Dyad
SPEED: Erzulie Dantor < The Baron-Maman Dyad = Big Papa < Damballah
BATTLE IQ: Damballah < The Baron-Maman Dyad < Big Papa < Erzulie Dantor
DEFENSE: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < Big Papa < The Baron-Maman Dyad
RUTHLESSNESS: Damballah <<< Erzulie Dantor = Big Papa < The Baron-Maman Dyad
If you were curious, here’s the same with the Baron by himself:
ATTACK: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < Big Papa < The Baron
SPEED: Erzulie Dantor < The Baron = Big Papa < Damballah
BATTLE IQ: Damballah < The Baron < Big Papa < Erzulie Dantor
DEFENSE: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < The Baron < Big Papa
RUTHLESSNESS: Damballah <<< Erzulie Dantor = Big Papa < The Baron
And here is berserk mode Baron:
ATTACK: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < Big Papa <<< Berserk Mode Baron
SPEED: Erzulie Dantor < Big Papa < Damballah = Berserk Mode Baron
BATTLE IQ: Berserk Mode Baron <<< Damballah < Big Papa < Erzulie Dantor
DEFENSE: Damballah < Erzulie Dantor < Berserk Mode Baron < Big Papa
RUTHLESSNESS: Damballah <<< Erzulie Dantor = Big Papa <<< Berserk Mode Baron
This is so dumb that there’s only five stats. I didn’t include nearly enough stats.
My favorite thing of all is the scenario when Damballah takes the W. The weakest of the Loa is the only one left standing.
I really believe there is a nonzero probability that any one of these guys takes the W. So obviously, I think the Baron-Maman dyad takes the W most of the time, Big Papa is a close second, insanely enough Erzulie can actually win too (she maims Big Papa and the Baron at the start of the fight, those two literally take until the end of time until only one of them is left standing, whoever is left is weaker than they were before, she kills his ass with her daggers) (this is still very improbable, most of the time she gets clapped by whoever’s still alive)
But yeah, even Damballah can win! This is how he wins: He just slithers away super fast at the beginning of the fight and hides in some secluded part of the multiverse. The only one with high enough Battle IQ who would think to kill his ass is Erzulie. But she’s not going to waste her time, because she knows she low-diffs him, and she doesn’t have to worried about getting maimed. But those other two monsters - the most busted and second most busted thing ever - actually do have to worry about getting maimed. It is very probable that Big Papa or the Baron or both kill Erzulie during The Loa Civil War, at any point during the war and possibly very early in it too. But as I explained before, if Erzulie dies her daggers continue to move along a straight path in whatever direction she set them to before she died. Normally, postmortem daggers are easy for the two most busted things in all of existence to dodge, because they just move along straight paths. But those guys are throwin hands, they can't focus any of their magic on dodging the daggers. They are so neck-and-neck, they have to focus all their magic on just fighting each other. They duke it out literally until the end of time, and Erzulie has INSANE Battle IQ! She fired an unfathomable amount of these daggers before she died. Literally, n=INFINITY-1. Mr. Sadism and Mr. Mischief both get maimed as all fuck if the Loa Civil War breaks out. The Baron doesn’t have high enough Battle IQ to even think about Damballah. Big Papa has high enough Battle IQ to think about Damballah, but he can’t waste any of his magic pursuing that guy. Again, he is so neck-and-neck with the Baron-Maman Dyad that he has to focus all his magic on them, or he’s going to die. At the end of time, only Big Papa or the Baron-Maman Dyad is left standing. But whoever is left got maimed by Erzulie. They are weaker than they were at the start of the fight. In fact, they are weak enough for Damballah to slither out from where he was hiding and kill their ass with his absurd speed. They just too maimed and slow to hit him or escape him. Damballah takes the W.
The weakest of all the gods is the only one left standing.
This is just endlessly fun to think about.
I would watch multiple seasons of anime about the Loa Civil War.

imagine Steve going all Days of Future Past from the majority of the people he loves being dead to the past where almost all of them barely know each other
imagine him seeing the people he watched die alive again and him holding back tears and itching to hug them and not being able to
imagine him agonizing over what people he can save this time around, not just his friends, but like. can he save Barbs? or would it mess things up too much because Nancy might not be pulled into this at all? and thinking that maybe that would be good for her but can they afford this? Nancy is a very important member of the team
could he try to save Billy? he might hate the guy but Max was devastated by his death and she is one of "his" kids now and he hates to see her hurt. but he doesn't even know what when and how billy gets roped into this shit
imagine Steve looking at Robin and Eddie in school wanting to hangout with them instead of Tommy H and Carol but knowing they really dislike him. imagine him looking over his shoulder sometimes wanting to share a joke with Robin but she is not there. or him staring sometimes at Eddie wishing he could just tell him how he feels because what if Eddie dies again
and overall Steve knows what he is supposed to do but it's the most vague shit ever and he doesn't know how to get there and what if he somehow breakes something by meddling too much?
Steve selfishly wanting to end it all himself so others would just have a normal life, despite knowing full well it's not possible. and perhaps even more selfishly thinking he can't really live anymore without these people in his life
It would would be so full of angst and so much feels but in the end no one he cares about dies and so it's all been worth it

One common Undertale misconception that really frustrates me is when Sans is portrayed with a strong innate sense for RESETs and alternative timelines. Like, that he remembers the RESET timelines better than the other characters who only have occasional feelings of deja vu or even that he can sense when a timeline is RESET.
And that’s, like, almost the opposite of the actual text of the game. While pretty much every main character can have slightly-different dialogue in a Not-True-RESET, especially if the Player had previously befriended them, based on the idea that they have lingering memories/feelings from before the RESET -
Sans has no real dialogue changes based on this conceit. All of his changes are based around noticing Frisk has different reactions based on their memories of the precious timelines.
Other characters do also make observations like that about Frisk, like Mettaton and Toriel. But Sans is distinctive because this is the only way his comments change between RESETs and there are a lot of them from him.
Because that is what really frustrates me about this misconception. People mention it as one more thing that makes Sans cool - but the actual truth is far more badass. Sans is one of the people in the Underground who remembers RESETs the least. I think memory-resistance to RESETs is probably tied to Determination. Flowey, the second-most Determined person in the Underground after Frisk, can remember everything perfectly.
Everyone else has some vague feelings and deja vus. And Sans, he’s the least motivated person in the Underground - both in the sense he’s lazy and in the sense he’s fucking depressed.
That probably means he has very little Determination. Thus, he doesn’t remember anything that happens between RESETs.
And yet, he is still the character most aware of them. Because he has the technological know-how to read and analyze timelines.
And because he has the observation and analytical skill to notice a RESET from other people’s reactions and behavior. Whatever it’s Papyrus thinking he recognizes someone or Frisk’s behavior implying that they know something they shouldn’t have. Sans main RESET-related skill is just being able to identify these moments and come to the correct conclusion about them. And with that he manages to be the most aware character in the entire Underground.
Like, the one point where it might seem like Sans remembers something from a previous Timeline is the Fake Spare scene during his boss battle.
But it’s all pretend. Unlike the previous lines from other characters that I mentioned, this dialogue plays even if the Murder Route is the first time the player touched the game. Sans isn’t remembering anything in this scene. But he makes an educated guess that the Immoral Time God probably tried using their powers for good at first, so they were likely ‘friends’ in a previous timeline. And in most cases, his guess is right on the money - tricking many players into thinking this is another case of the game actually reacting to their past actions.
And as always, Sans can only tell if his lil’ trick worked or not based on the expression of the Player Character.
Arguably, Sans even uses his lack of Determination and cross-RESET memory to his advantage in his boss battle. After all, the whole point of this fight isn’t to kill the Player - Sans understands this is impossible. This is a war of attrition, trying to get the Player so frustrated and annoyed with the unfair fight that they just ragequit or RESET the Timeline. And this war of the Player’s patience versus Sans’ stamina and will is infinitely easier for him when he doesn’t actually perceive all the Player’s previous attempts against him.
Like, for the Player this might be the billion time they go up against him, they’re aware of some of his patterns and tricks now but they’re probably also frustrated and angry and exhausted. Meanwhile, from Sans’ POV, this is still the first time this is happening. He knows it’s not from the Player’s behavior and Frisk’s expression - but he doesn’t feel it like the Player does.
He doesn’t feel the frustration and repetition of the endless stalemate. So he’s always as fresh as a daisy no matter how rugged the Player is getting.
And that’s part of why Sans is so cool in the first place, like, in general. He’s technically the weakest person in the Underground, lacking in every standard evaluation of power in the setting - no ATK, no DEF, no HP, no DETERMINATION. But he’s darn clever enough to overcome these weaknesses and even use them in ways that make them into strengths, enough to be one of the most dangerous and most aware guys in this whole setting.
Sans can’t remember anything, and that makes him awesome.

Aziraphale’s Choice, the Job Connection, and Michael Sheen’s Morality
Update: Michael Sheen liked this post on Twitter, so I'm fairly certain there is a lot of validity to it.
I’ve had time to process Aziraphale’s choice at the end of Season 2. And I think only blaming the religious trauma misses something important in Aziraphale’s character. I think what happened was also Aziraphale’s own conscious choice––as a growth from his trauma, in fact. Hear me out.
Since November 2022 I’ve been haunted by something Michael Sheen said at the MCM London Comic Con. At the Q&A, someone asked him about which fantasy creature he enjoyed playing most and Michael (bless him, truly) veered on a tangent about angels and goodness and how, specifically,
We as a society tend to sort of undervalue goodness. It’s sort of seen as sort of somehow weak and a bit nimby and “oh it’s nice.” And I think to be good takes enormous reserves of courage and stamina. I mean, you have to look the dark in the face to be truly good and to be truly of the light…. The idea that goodness is somehow lesser and less interesting and not as kind of muscular and as passionate and as fierce as evil somehow and darkness, I think is nonsense. The idea of being able to portray an angel, a being of love. I love seeing the things people have put online about angels being ferocious creatures, and I love that. I think that’s a really good representation of what goodness can be, what it should be, I suppose.
I was looking forward to BAMF!Aziraphale all season long, and I think that’s what we got in the end. Remember Neil said that the Job minisode was important for Aziraphale’s story. Remember how Aziraphale sat on that rock and reconciled to himself that he MUST go to Hell, because he lied and thwarted the will of God. He believed that––truly, honestly, with the faith of a child, but the bravery of a soldier.
Aziraphale, a being of love with more goodness than all of Heaven combined, believed he needed to walk through the Gates of Hell because it was the Right Thing to do. (Like Job, he didn’t understand his sin but believed he needed to sacrifice his happiness to do the Right Thing.)
That’s why we saw Aziraphale as a soldier this season: the bookshop battle, the halo. But yes, the ending as well.
Because Aziraphale never wanted to go to Heaven, and he never wanted to go there without Crowley.
But it was Crowley who taught him that he could, even SHOULD, act when his moral heart told him something was wrong. While Crowley was willing to run away and let the world burn, it was Aziraphale (in that bandstand at the end of the world) who stood his ground and said No. We can make a difference. We can save everyone.
And Aziraphale knew he could not give up the ace up his sleeve (his position as an angel) to talk to God and make them see the truth in his heart.
I was messed up by Ineffable Bureaucracy (Boxfly) getting their happy ending when our Ineffable Husbands didn’t, but I see now that them running away served to prove something to Aziraphale. (And I am fully convinced that Gabriel and Beelzebub saw the example of the Ineffables at the Not-pocalypse and took inspiration from them for choosing to ditch their respective sides)
But my point is that Aziraphale saw them, and in some ways, they looked like him and Crowley. And he saw how Gabriel, the biggest bully in Heaven, was also like him in a way (a being capable of love) and also just a child when he wasn’t influenced by the poison of Heaven. Muriel, too, wasn’t a bad person. The Metatron also seemed to have grown more flexible with his morality (from Aziraphale's perspective). Like Earth, Heaven was shades of (light?) gray.
Aziraphale is too good an angel not to believe in hope. Or forgiveness (something he’s very good at it).
Aziraphale has been scarred by Heaven all his life. But with the cracks in Heaven’s armor (cracks he and Crowley helped create), Aziraphale is seeing something else. A chance to change them. They did terrible things to him, but he is better than them, and because of Crowley, he feels ready to face them.
(Will it work? Can Heaven change, institutionally? Probably not, but I can't blame Aziraphale for trying.)
At the cafe, the Metatron said something big was coming in the Great Plan. Aziraphale knows how trapped he had felt when he didn’t have God’s ear the first time something huge happened in the Big Plan. He can’t take a chance again to risk the world by not having a foot in the door of Heaven. That’s why we saw individual human deaths (or the threat of death) so much more this season: Elspeth, Wee Morag, Job’s children, the 1940s magician. Aziraphale almost killed a child when he couldn’t get through to God, and he’s not going through that again.
“We could make a difference.” We could save everyone.
Remember what Michael Sheen said about courage and doing good––and having to “look the dark in the face to be truly good.” That’s what happened when Aziraphale was willing to go to Hell for his actions. That’s what happened when he decided he had to go to Heaven, where he had been abused and belittled and made to feel small. He decided to willingly go into the Lion’s Den, to face his abusers and his anxiety, to make them better so that they would not try to destroy the world again.
Him, just one angel. He needed Crowley to be there with him, to help him be brave, to ask the questions that Heaven needed to hear, to tell them God was wrong. Crowley is the inspiration that drives Aziraphale’s change, Crowley is the engine that fuels Aziraphale’s courage.
But then Crowley tells him that going to Heaven is stupid. That they don’t need Heaven. And he’s right. Aziraphale knows he’s right.
Aziraphale doesn’t need Heaven; Heaven needs him. They just don’t know how much they need him, or how much humanity needs him there, too. (If everyone who ran for office was corrupt, how can the system change?)
Terry Pratchett (in the Discworld book, Small Gods) is scathing of God, organized religion, and the corrupt people religion empowers, but he is sympathetic to the individual who has real, pure faith and a good heart. In fact, the everyman protagonist of Small Gods is a better person than the god he serves, and in the end, he ends up changing the church to be better, more open-minded, and more humanist than god could ever do alone.
Aziraphale is willing to go to the darkest places to do the Right Thing, and Heaven is no exception. When Crowley says that Heaven is toxic, that’s exactly why Aziraphale knows he needs to go there. “You’re exactly is different from my exactly.”
____
In the aftermath of Trump's election in the US, Brexit happened in 2018. Michael Sheen felt compelled to figure out what was going on in his country after this shock. But he was living in Los Angeles with Sarah Silverman at the time, and she also wanted to become more politically active in the US.
Sheen: “I felt a responsibility to do something, but it [meant] coming back [to Britain] – which was difficult for us, because we were very important to each other. But we both acknowledge that each of us had to do what we needed to do.” In the end, they split up and Michael moved back to the UK.
Sometimes doing the Right Thing means sacrificing your own happiness. Sometimes it means going to Hell. Sometimes it means going to Heaven. Sometimes it means losing a relationship.
And that’s why what happened in the end was so difficult for Aziraphale. Because he loves Crowley desperately. He wants to be together. He wanted that kiss for thousands of years. He knows that taking command of Heaven means they would never again have to bow to the demands of a God they couldn’t understand, or run from a Hell who still came after them. They could change the rules of the game.
And he’s still going to do that. But it hurts him that he has to do that alone.

"So it's true! You and her- Guizhong were a thing. Then what the hell does that make me Morax?!" "Can you just drop it of? We're in a hurry." He was tired. And their friend was in danger. "No! Knowing you'll be out there to save your other lover, tell me the truth Morax! Is it true?!" It was the same topic of argument for some time now. He had been denying it over and over again, he just cannot seem to understand why you kept insisting even after hearing him say that was not the case. And he was getting tired of it.
Guizhong was just a friend and that very same friend is now in danger if they do not arrive at rhe right time and here he is getting hold up because of your questions. And knowing you would not let him go even if he were to deny it because that was the truth. Maybe he should give in for now to avoid further more questioning and leave as fast as he can so he could come back to you in now time, knowing that he could easily resolve the misunderstanding and his lies. "You know what. It's true. Now if you just get out of the way, I need to save her." "Wha-what? Wa-wait! Morax-!"
He did not mean to be harsh than he already is. He was just mad, mad because he saw no reason why you should get jealous of a friend, a common friend of yours. Mad because he was running late and a little more than to it could possibly result the death of a dear friend. At the same time, he was mad at himself for leaving that way. But he knew he could always explain when he came back into you. The two of you could always sort it out after the battle like you two always does.
So why? So why in the world- celestia were everything was on fire. And you were in the middle of it, leaning on your weapon for support, blood running down all the way from your temple into your chin. It was not just that. You are bleeding, bleeding all over. Why. Why why why why why? Just what the hell happened in here?
"Don't come." You utter, despite the fact that you could barely stand, you painfully look forward to your lover... heh, can he still be called a lover when he already admitted that he betrayed you? "Some..." you pant. "Some beings came into the city while you were away... hahh, I manage to defend the city until all the people manage to flee but- cough! Hahh, the god manage to escape."
"No. No no no no no." It was getting hard to breathe, nevertheless you should see Morax from afar, running towards you. "Bastard- I told you not to come he-!" You stagger forward, for a moment losing consciousness, still, you embrace yourself with the thought of you hitting the ground. But you never did.
"Let go." "It was a lie. There was no one else." "Morax- I said-" "I was in a hurry, I did not mean to say those words. Guizhong was only a friend. Believe me. God- Celestia. There is no one else. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please don't leave me." He was hugging, cradling you in his arms. His tears rolling down his cheeks, into your own but you were feeling quite numb to notice that.
"It's..." You tried to hold up a hand but you could only feel the pain and the more it drains you. In the end you could only hold on into his arm. "It's okay... you don't have to lie to make me... feel better." You tried to smile to make him feel better, so why does it look like he was about to lose his whole world? "No. No please. It's nothing like that. I was a fool, I am a fool. Please believe me there is no one else but you. (First name). Please."
You knew he was talking, you can see him talking despite how things were slowly starting to go blurr, you can hear a few words but cannot seemed to focus on it when there is a high pitched ring that makes you unable to focus on what he was saying. Also, "It's cold." You mumble, fighting everything you can to stay conscious.
"Fuck!" Morax can feel your body slowly but surely cooling down. Suddenly his heart dropped as he panicked, he was getting anxious. He felt fear for the first time in his life. "Hold on, please hold on." He tried, he tried his best to fix you with his powers but it was no avail. You have so many wounds, you have already lost a lot of blood. You were dying all ago. "Fuck." He cursed once again. "Fuck, fuck! I told you to hold on (First name)!" He was getting mad again.
Morax felt like he was going mad, he felt like he was about to get crazy. Specially when he saw you starting to close your eyes. He felt a shiver down his spine. "Don't you dare close your eyes (First name)!" Not like this, not when you seemed to sure that he never loved- love you. "Fuck!" His amber iris were glowing with that presence of a dragon. "Don't you dare fell asleep (First name). I'm begging you please-?" He felt a light squeeze on his arm.
"Its.. okay." Taking your last breath, Morax felt the heavy weight of your now dead body in his arms. Your hand falling to your side as your head rest in his chest. At that very moment a rain drop fell from the sky, Morax arms were trembling yet still manage to pull you closer to him as if trying to find a little warmth. "Hah, hahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHA."
That day, the dragon lost his mate. His one and only mate as his anguish cries were heard all throughout their land.
