And down the stretch comes murder

I wanted to take this moment to highlight the adorable child actors they got- Liam James and Carlos McCullers II. They are so perfectly cast as Shawn and Gus and they do such an amazing job! Im so impressed by them 👏👏

The whole spitball incident really highlights the differences between Shawn and Gus’ ethics. Shawn feels guilty for thinking he got the wrong spitter and ruined Jimmys life while Gus actually did it and feels no remorse at all. Perhaps it’s because Jimmy tortured Gus more, but it’s also come up a few other times i believe, that Gus is not above revenge nor is always willing to do the right thing if it interferes with his safety or his own code of justice, whereas with Shawn it’s like he can’t rest until he’s made things right. This, in addition to the ways he looks out for people (helping Lassie solve a case without him knowing, helping juliet find some kids without getting paid, standing between Gus and a gun), I think is why i tend to be more drawn to Shawn. I love tender-hearted morally just characters. Im not saying he’s always riding the high horse (pun intended), simply that at the end of the day you know he’s going to do the right thing. Don’t get me wrong, i love a morally ambiguous character too, and if I’m honest Gus’s outlook is certainly more realistic, but if i had to pick a favorite, i want the reliably good and wholesome over the self-serving. Not that im saying Gus is selfish at all, but of the two Shawns more our hero, even compared to his own cop father. I think Juliet is the only one who comes closest to matching that above and beyond heroism. I think the only reason she’s a step below is because Shawn simply notices others more. Thats all. If Juliet had Shawns abilities she’d be just as on top of it as him, probably more so. Actually she might get overwhelmed by seeing it all and not being able to help everyone. I think it’d be really hard for her to ignore sometimes. Which, okay I’m going down a tangent, but do you think Shawn had to learn to shut it off sometimes or like, learn to walk away? Cause i imagine day to day Shawn’s seeing people dealing with grief, abuse, or pain and with as kind as he is, it must be hard for him to ignore. Like if you’ve ever seen Daredevil, I’m imagining a less dramatic version of that haha

Henry will take any opportunity to point out Shawns failings or try to make him feel less than. Shawn tells him he’s there for a case and instead of asking him about it, Henry goes right back into you never could be a good handicapper because you lack the patience and follow-through it takes to put the time in and research. Also, the line “i let him talk to me” just doesn’t sit right with me even if the guy did turn out to be a skeeve. This kind of stuff makes me think Shawn either learned how to respect people from his mother or refused to treat people like his father. Probably both, though i hate to give her credit for anything haha

Look at his smile when he sees Lassie feed the horse. He’s so warmly amused by him. I wasn’t a Shassie shipper originally (as i just didn’t ship ppl in ye olden days) but i think I am now. I see it guys, I get it haha

These scenes are what makes the episode for me! I love them! We get to see both Shawns interacting and how he utilizes his vast memory, taking a peak into his mind palace so to speak. Plus he literally answered that common question of if you could go back in time what would you tell your younger self? (“Think big!”) I know they never really intended for this to be like a deep scene (nor expected certain fans to overanalyze it haha) but i like how he approaches the kid version of himself with a certain degree of amusement. Like I imagine if i was seeing my young self I’d probably be rolling my eyes at my sheer stupidity, but Shawns a lot kinder to himself haha Also little Shawns line “I thought I’d be bald by 20” was fucking gold! I wish I had better words for why this works so well but all i have is that it does and its brilliant.

Heres some completely irrelevant info. The difference between a dreamcicle and a creamcicle: both are orange flavored, but dreamsicles had an ice milk center while a creamsicle was ice cream. And dreamsicles are no longer made.

Trying to think about what would make Lu Guang open up about going back and am forced to admit that the only times he's in any way opened up in-series are when he's been forced to by outside circumstances beyond his control.

He panics if Cheng Xiaoshi is about to go off plan or he doesn't know what's coming photo-wise, but otherwise is incredibly good at keeping his cool.

That said, the only times he's been "confronted" to any extent so far remain post-earthquake and you could also argue when he was called on his reaction to the idea that powers could be passed on in s2. In these cases, he tends to deliberately underplay his reaction and let others just make their own assumptions. His deflections at present work because no one is truly looking to realise it's what they are. His quietness also absolutely comes to his advantage because his personality doesn't allow him to "slip" in the same way as a more talkative character would. (And doesn't that just make me think about how all the comments about him being "mature" imply he wasn't always like he is now. I doubt it's an entire façade he's putting on, but he has changed irreparably.)

The exception to this is, of course, when Cheng Xiaoshi was shot and he completely lost it. It's not that he's just dead emotionally or anything the rest of the time, but this is the one thing (person) he's sacrificed his beliefs for. And before it got to this stage, there was still some control, but Cheng Xiaoshi getting shot is a double whammy. Not only is Lu Guang no longer in control of the situation (he lost that back when he got stabbed) but if the implication is that Cheng Xiaoshi got shot the first time, then his reaction here is pure instinct. There's no thought in it whatsoever and even after both of them return from the hospital, he's clearly not taking it for granted.

Thinking to season three though. He's still off-kilter for now and Liu Xiao will likely ensure he remains that way. The fact we've been let into Lu Guang's POV now means we'll get to see those cracks that have been forming throughout season two and watch them widening.

Qiao Ling's knowledge is the key. If Lu Guang is to open up properly, it has to be external. Either a danger to Cheng Xiaoshi so potent he's forced to act without thinking or someone actually pushing and not letting him deflect. Someone with enough knowledge to realise that he's deflecting in the first place.

okay. let's talk about black terry jr.

TL;DR: terry jr is black. that is something that should not be erased. regardless of your access to or willingness to search for the canon material that confirms this, you should not be depicting him as white. whitewashing terry by refusing to think of him as black creates an unsafe space for our black community members, and you should re-examine your personal biases if you choose to insist on continuing to see terry as white.

terry jr is black. point-blank. and if terry jr is canonically black, then he should be depicted as such.

i will concede that it is something that you might not spot if you listen through the podcast casually. it's something that i didn't know was actually official in any capacity until recently. and i would like to note that i do not have and have never had access to the dndads patreon. i have not listened to any of the teen talks in full (even the ones released to the public. it's just not my jam.), and any information or spitballing contained within is something that i have either been told second-hand or am completely unaware of. i also didn't look at the official poster (the "everything is alright" poster) that depicted both terry jr and samantha as black.

but the fact of the matter remains that terry jr and samantha are black and have been acknowledged as such within the source material.

once again, i myself didn't seek this information out enough to know it was official canon. so then why have i always depicted them as black anyway?

well when i started engaging with the fandom, i saw what was being presented to me in the fandom was overwhelmingly that terry was indeed black or at least popularly interpreted to be black. and my first and only thought was that that was nice. so i decided to roll with it.

if i really wanted to check if that was canon and it being canon was important to me, i could always have asked around. i could've sought out information from official sources. because if they were black and i just missed it in some way, i would've wanted to check myself. especially because doing so would lead to whitewashing.

but i didn't feel the need to do that because i think that just the added racial diversity was really cool to see on its own.

for argument's sake, there is still the possibility that you'd think it is simply just popular fanon. let's say you chose to not check for yourself whether or not he was canonically black. or let's say that, for whatever reason, you think that what is available isn't enough to sufficiently deem him canonically black. so let's discuss why terry should still be depicted as black even if it was "just" fanon and there were no official artworks to go off of.

i am not of the opinion that fanon in general should be taken as gospel. in fact, there are quite a few things within dndads fanon itself that i personally disagree with and choose not to engage with. the reason why this interpretation in particular is a sore spot is the question of why, after seeing the popular portrayal and recognizing the ability to create racial diversity in a space where a good amount of appearances and identities can be up for interpretation, someone would still choose to depict him as white.

why do you choose to depict him as white? do you have any personal biases that make you think that he would or should be white? do you think that it is unimportant or inconsequential to not depict him as a person of color?

what would be so compelling about making him white that you would choose to go against this interpretation? why is it so important that you continue to see him as white?

who are you ignoring in the process?

i do not think it is deliberately malicious to initially think that terry jr is white. it is the unfortunate truth that white tends to be considered the default. but it begins to rub me the wrong way when anyone chooses to stick with that idea when presented with any evidence or argument to the contrary.

though i will admit that i am not black, i am still a person of color. and i think that creating a fandom space where we can highlight, create, and celebrate racial variety means creating a space where people of color feel safer. and because i would like to uplift the black fandom member who tried to voice their own personal take on this matter, i would like to link back to [this post from vivalapersistence] as the reason why i felt compelled to talk about this in the first place.

i don't want to talk over him, but i want to point out his statement that having this kind of solid representation is important and means something to him as a black person in this community. erasing terry as black means that you would be, intentionally or not, erasing and silencing black voices. it takes away that element of representation within the fandom and does real harm to the black people within when you decide that that representation isn't important. there are real racial connotations to the argument here, and it's frankly a little callous to pretend like there's not.

so maybe let's be nice to the BIPOC in our community spaces, okay?

I WANTED TO MAKE MORE THAN JUST THIS but it took like. a week to get done and im sick these days

anyways in light of mk1's nonsense i revisited some koncepts i had for a roleswap au. i took hanzo's inspiration from a mix of mkx and mk11 outfits and kuai i kind of just winged it based off my own preferences in past appearances!!

more rambling is under the cut about the actual AU :-]

SO I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY DEVELOPED THIS BEYOND SOME OLD SKETCHES I HAD OF KUAI'S DESIGN but i had some general ideas of how this was supposed to work???

the shirai ryu is still alive and well! he's still a family man and very clan oriented. satoshi is still born and grows into his clan's responsibilities, however harumi dies in child birth.

the lin kuei on the other hand is Not Doing Well. they end up getting wiped out during a raid from the shirai ryu and most of kuai's immediate family (whether by choice or blood) ends up going down with them.

prior to this kuai ends up passing after a failed mission to retrieve the map of elements from the shaolin temple in an attempt to prove himself to his clan. (instead of bi-han being the one set on that path, kuai ends up taking the initiative instead WAY before he's ready without anyone's knowledge and ends up dying when met with scorpion.)

most of it is similar how it is in actual canon for how scorpion's story goes. he gets resurrected he pledges loyalty to quan chi in order to get revenge, blah blah blah. mortal kombat happens. the two meet again at some point.

kuai's still on that "you killed my family" juice but its...more so about familial ties (like bi-han and smoke) rather than it being the love(s) of his life (like hanzo's wife and son) , seeing as he died young from his own overzealous nature.

very much has anger issues. he's impatient and has alot shorter of a temper by comparison to scorpion in the original canon. hardly ever humbled until that point lol

hanzo on the other hand is surprisingly more lax. meditates often, drinks alot of tea and while he *IS* stressed he handles it alot better than kuai does. maybe has a problem of ignoring his problems though for the sake of the task at hand.

kuai ends up harassing hanzo alot in this AU even outside of the tournament. he's kind of a bitchy ghost there to remind hanzo of what happened to him and lowkey hanzo guilts over it.

kuai has alot of grim reaper motifs in his design. he carries a scythe made of ice primarily and fights at a more long distance range.

hanzo on the other hand is alot more of an up close brawler. he keeps alot of design traits from mkx with a bit of mk11 sprinkled in for inspiration of his "classic" design.

STILL A PYROMANCER!! i just havent thought out how. he's just regarded with a bit more respect for having those unnatural abilities lol

but yeah this is just me spitballing in bullet points. i'm hoping to make more stuff later that is a bit more...thought out properly but it follows more of like

mk mythologies --> mk9 -> mkx

type of timeline i guess? except hanzo is in bi-han's position and kuai ends up being put in scorpion's. bi-han doesn't really have a place in the AU outside of being a background character and driving motive for kuai's vengeance later on. (though we're not gonna talk about how bi-han's mentality eventually fed into kuai's at a young age and made him come to the conclusions he did before he died.... maybe.)

smoke exists for the sake of painful flashbacks lol

satoshi's also a bg character but he does end up growing up with the shirai ryu and takes on his own share of clan responsibilities. idk whether or not he takes after hanzo's pyromancy or not in this AU but either way he grows up to be a well respected figure in the clan!

alot of stuff outside of this remains the same though, just the lin kuei and shirai ryu's dynamics get swapped.

pairing: hoseok x reader (no pronouns used) genre: mutual pining, librarian au; fluff warnings: swearing, hobi being a cute disaster, this is kind of idiots to lovers but since the lovers development is implied i didn't tag it that way but just know it's there ok, taehyung is a shithead, mostly unedited. rating: e for everyone wordcount: 1.6k

Hoseok is a little misguided, is the thing.

What counts is that he has good intentions, even if they don’t hold up under closer examination. But he’s sort of a disaster of a human, so he takes Taehyung’s ribbing on the chin and forges ahead with his plan.

All because he doesn’t know how to talk to you.

He knows your favorite book because you check it out at least once a month. He knows your favorite flower because there’s a bouquet of them tattooed so artfully on your arm they look painted on. He knows your name and your address and your phone number because it’s in the system, and he has enough sense not to do anything with them.

“You could just—and I’m just spitballing here—say hello.”

Hoseok frowns. “I say hello every time…?”

Taehyung is a year younger, so it feels weird to disappoint him. Settles in his stomach all funny, like he’s doing something wrong but can’t figure out what it is. “That’s not—” Taehyung sighs, pinches the bridge of his nose. “Are you always like this? Like, this is your baseline?”

“I’m not following.”

“Clearly,” Taehyung mutters. He looks good today, Hoseok thinks. Looks like he’d woken up and put actual effort into his appearance. Looks like the summer has favorites. Doesn’t at all look like he’s on the verge of a mental break, which is more than Hoseok can say about himself. “Hyung, I’m going to ask this point-blank—”

“Maybe don’t? I’m fragile.”

“—Do you know how to flirt?”

Hoseok scoffs, all instinct. Of course he knows how to flirt. He’d flirted his way through undergrad and then grad school with great success. He flirts with the grumpy IT guy the city sends over, just because it’s funny to watch his cheeks turn a shade of red he’d previously thought was impossible. Hell, he flirts with stupidity every single day, so who is Kim Taehyung to ask him such a thing?

“Don’t ask silly questions, Taehyungie.”

“So you’re saying you do?”

Hoseok rolls his eyes. “Yes, that’s what I’m saying.”

“Okay,” Taehyung shrugs, and Hoseok sighs in relief, glad that particular interrogation is over. “Flirt with me, then.”

And then he’s choking on his tea, expensive cashmere sweater now soiled with half a cup of honey vanilla chamomile. “You asshole,” he wheezes, barely able to get the words out before his throat constricts again, warning him of another impending coughing fit. “My sister bought me this sweater.”

“Noona has great taste,” comes Taehyung’s easy reply, paying no mind to Hoseok at all, “which is to be expected, of course. Now, please flirt with me once you’ve recovered.”

“Why?” Hoseok snaps, because the way he’s blotting at his sweater with a soggy napkin is humiliating. He doesn’t even have a change of clothes anymore; had taken his gym bag out of his car a few weeks ago when he’d gotten the flu.

Taehyung sighs again—put-upon, like he’s dealing with an obtuse child. “Because I’m trying to facilitate true love, and I can’t send you into battle unprepared.”

Hoseok just glares. He’s going to have to spend his lunch break running back to his apartment to change.

Right, the plan.

It’s all dependent on you sticking to your routine, which goes like this: every Sunday afternoon, without fail, you swing by the library and make pleasant small talk with Taehyung as you return your books. Taehyung, without fail, asks what you thought of them and recommends new ones accordingly. You always smile and say thank you, and your voice always sounds like church bells.

(“That’s because you want to mar—” “I will fire you if you finish that thought.”)

Hoseok is always conveniently absent during these exchanges, pretending to do paperwork in his office. This is why Taehyung calls him a coward, and that’s probably true, it’s just… Hoseok has talked to you enough times to develop a big fat crush, and that’s not acceptable. He doesn’t even know you; doesn’t want to romanticize you and put you on a pedestal.

Hence the plan.

If he can’t talk to you with words, he’ll do it with books.

It’s genius, regardless of what Taehyung thinks.

But Taehyung is integral to the plan, so Hoseok has to get him on board. “Look, I already put it together, I just need you to… suggest it.”

“You mean be manipulative.”

“It’s not manipulative,” Hoseok argues, sending a glare Taehyung’s way. “It’s no different from you suggesting books any other time.”

“I just don’t understand why you can’t just say hi, I really dig your taste in literature, would you like to grab a coffee sometime? It’s not that hard, hyung, you really don’t need to do all of…” He points at the stack of books Hoseok has assembled. ��...This.”

There’s about three seconds before Hoseok explodes, and Taehyung must realize it because he’s throwing his hands up and going fine, fine and helping sort the books.

As annoying as Taehyung can be, he really is a great salesman.

Powerful, too, because Hoseok wouldn’t have lasted a second in your presence. Probably would’ve melted under the warmth of your smile; would’ve withered as soon as you strolled in with your tattoo visible; would’ve fallen to his knees the second you said hello.

Taehyung has done none of those things, which Hoseok knows because he’s standing on a chair, watching from the window in his office. He knows Taehyung can see his face peeking through the blinds, keeps rolling his eyes whenever the two of them make eye contact, but he schools his expression and keeps Hoseok’s secret safe.

“I actually have some special recommendations for you today,” he hears Taehyung say. Watches as he hands over the bundle of paperbacks. “Our lovely head librarian thought you might be interested in these. He picked them out just for you.”

You look taken aback. It sends Hoseok into a panic, wondering if he’d gone too far. Maybe he should’ve listened to Taehyung, after all, but surely a stack of books is less forward and weird than a coffee date? You can just not read the books and return them if they aren’t your thing, but turning someone down face-to-face is much harder.

No, no—Hoseok did the right thing. He has to have faith in the plan.

“Wow,” you reply, a beautiful smile lighting up your face. “These look great. Please tell him I said thank you.”

Taehyung’s smile is not beautiful. It’s greasy and smarmy. “Oh, I most certainly will.”

Taehyungie (11:32am): Can’t make it into work today, hyung Taehyungie (11:32am): I’m super sick Taehyungie (11:32am): Sorry 😉

Hoseok can’t believe what he’s seeing.

Kim Taehyung is a traitor. A treasonist. A miscreant. Another word for a disloyal person who is not only willing to abandon his hyung in his time of need, but is gleeful about it.

What could Hoseok possibly have done in a past life to deserve this?

Doesn’t matter, he decides. This is totally fine. Hoseok’s going to prove Taehyung wrong. He’s going to have a proper conversation with you. He’s going to ask what you thought about the books he’d chosen. He’s going to recommend new ones. He’s going to flirt. He might even ask if you want to grab coffee sometime, and he’s going to relay all of this to Taehyung right before he tells him to go to hell.

Just one small hiccup: he has to survive you first.

You’re surprised to see him, and the way your eyes widen makes Hoseok’s heart skip a beat. God, he’s worse off than he thought. Gets worse when you reach the circulation desk and he can smell your perfume: something soft and earthy that reminds him of a spring breeze. Has his knees shaking, on the verge of buckling beneath him, and it’s only through pure spite that he stays upright.

“Good afternoon,” he says with a small wave.

You smile. “Hi, Hoseok. Haven’t seen you up here in a while.”

“Ah, well, you know. Paperwork.”

You nod, but the jerky motions of your head tell Hoseok you probably don’t do much paperwork at your job. “Yeah, of course. Is Taehyung out today?”

“Yep, took a sick day.” He shouldn’t, but he thinks Taehyung deserves it: “Sent me a text this morning and said it was coming out both ends. Seems bad.” You’re grimacing. Oh god, you’re grimacing. “Anyway! Here for your weekly return?”

Like a switch has been flipped, you scramble into action, reaching into your tote bag to retrieve the books. “I—yeah, sorry, let me just…”

“Sure, take your time. Did you like them?”

“Yes,” you answer, gaze slowly rising to meet his own. There are words clearly biting at the back of your teeth and, like Hoseok has done a million times before, you swallow them. Slowly, you hand over all the books but one. “I especially liked this one.”

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Hoseok had agonized over that one for days, wondering if it was too much, if it’d send the wrong message. Some of the other books were more obvious, but this one was… well. It’s not what was said that’s important, it’s what wasn’t, and Hoseok had concocted that stupid plan because he couldn’t say what he wanted to.

But you’re handing it over with a hesitation that has Hoseok smiling despite himself. “Would you like to hang onto it a little longer?”

“Would that be okay?”

“Of course.” And then, because he’s brave and he doesn’t want to end up like one of Ishiguro’s characters, he takes advantage of a fleeting moment of bravery. “Maybe we could—aish. Would you like to discuss it over coffee sometime? The book, I mean. With me.”

You nod, and your smile is shy. “I would love to.”

Gale: I'm sure Mystra will summon me soon enough, but until then, I propose we celebrate our victory the mortal way - with a drink in our hands, and reckless abandon in our hearts. Halsin: I am seldom one to imbibe, but even I shall make an exception on a day like today. I think we have earned it, no? Kyvir: A celebration sounds perfect. Astarion: Yes! We should see if the Elfsong's still standing. I won't imbibe, but I'll be happy to be away from here, and in your company. I honestly don't mind what we do, once we get - ow! What the - oh gods. Oh no. Well... it was nice while it lasted. Argh! I'm sorry, I - I have to go! Minsc: We will find you, Astarion! AND BOO WILL BRING A SUNFLOWER!

To be entirely fair to Larian, the need to provide epilogues for every character's story makes it difficult to focus on any individual one for any length of time. Astarion's in particular is followed by Karlach's, which for obvious reasons isn't something that can be delayed while the group finds Astarion and makes sure he's okay. However it's still an absolutely terrible ending.

It's like... there being this scene of Astarion's tadpole-induced immunity to sunlight wearing off makes sense and it would be just as big a misstep as having his last appearance in a run where he's not romanced be this to skip over it in his spawn ending. But handling it this way is also a misstep. Similarly to Karlach's, it's such a horrible ending for a member of your party? Especially with Astarion having been such a massive fan favourite basically from day one, it just feels kind of mean to have this be his good ending if you haven't romanced him. Actually, one good solution might be to have essentially two epilogue scenes? ...Three counting the last conversation with your lover. But you've got Karlach and Lae'zel's endings (and Wyll's if he goes with Karlach) which would have to happen pretty immediately due to the circumstances of those endings, and then the others could happen a bit later. Like... just spitballing here, but maybe with everyone else you go to the Elfsong like Astarion suggests and that's where you talk to them all. With Astarion in particular, that way instead of him having to sprint off in a mad scramble to find shade before he dies he could step out onto the street to look at the destruction, realize the sun's hurting him again, and just step back inside. It would keep that moment of him realizing his time in the sun's up without having the last thing you see of him if you haven't romanced him being him having to run for his life while the party just stands there and watches.

um ok so I don’t actually watch Fitmc but I’m very much going to but I’ve gotten bits and pieces and can we talk about the Corpse Hole?!?!

idk if that’s what it’s properly called but I cannot stop thinking about Kaz from SoC in the corpse canal

Fit is gonna be there for a few weeks right? I’ve seen several people predicting cannibalism and believe me I’m hopping on that train that’s great and horrifying from someone who doesn’t want to, but also how about severe touch repulsion? How about Fit secluding himself when he gets back because the corpses are burned into his mind? Empty glassy eyes and deep shadows on sunken skin. (the first time he sees Missa again he nearly jumps out of his skin)

Waking up in the middle of the night—if he’s even able to sleep—feeling skeleton hands clawing up his sides. After so long of either starving or retching up rancid flesh he starts to look like them, thinning and muscles deteriorating from lack of a proper diet.

It’s dark down there right? Except unlike in your room at night the disturbingly humanoid shadows actually are human and they’re Not and they won’t go away.

Days in silence staring at grotesque mimicries of human tragedy. Sometimes Fit wonders if he died and simply missed it. He definitely has a hard time falling asleep and probably spends several hours in a half awake daze. Major disassociating for sure.

All in all snaps him like a rubber band back into the 2b2t mindset

He probably gets worked into a fervor trying to battle his newfound death anxiety and probably save the other residents from the Federation

Imagine seeing your loved ones alive and very concerned for you after that? He probably won’t be able to stand to be near them. Noise and light would get overwhelming quickly, I think Philza would be one of the only people able to make any progress with him from all his time alone in hardcore. And Fit would want so badly to be back the way things were, especially with Pac but he just can’t.

Omg no problem thanks so much! I think there's a general tendency for the great drivers to be better at managing oversteer in general, because when you have the skill to keep the car under control having more room for the car to move gives you more options for your entry and exit lines. Before Max I definitely saw it thrown about that Lewis was maybe the only driver who liked as much oversteer as Michael did, and then Senna close after the two of them.

Senna's thing wasn't so much necessarily oversteer or understeer (though he struggled in an understeering car and preferred a front leading car like Michael, he still wanted the car balanced and not with a mind of its own like say the newer red bulls) as it was the throttle fluttering technique that let him constantly test the grip limits. He definitely used similar techniques to Michael but honestly I think Senna's preference for oversteer has become a tiiiiny bit overstated because Prost prefers understeer and the Mythos of their rivalry exaggerated their differences + Senna obviously would have been strongly against anything that would help Prost especially if it helped his own style. He definitely preferred oversteer though so he's up there.

From the same source that noted max's driving style, Gábor Wéber said about Lewis "Regarding his technique, he likes to brake late, sometimes even locking up his inner front tires, but he can’t be pigeonholed according to his lines. He likes to vary the late, early or normal entry lines, sometimes even on the same lap, according to the behaviour of his car, he’s a bit like a one-man band. His adaptability is one of his strongest weapons, but this wouldn’t help him without his outstanding precision"

Which is to say Lewis likes an oversteering adaptive car, but he's not reliant on oversteering for his cornering so much as he is reliant on the car being able to adapt to a situation - which you naturally get more of with an oversteering car. When the car is more reactive you get a lot more minute reactions out of it to the conditions, which gives you more information to work with if you read the car as well as Lewis does. For him oversteer isn't so much the basis of his technique as it is the place where he gets the information that informs his technique. Lewis is known for talking about "feeling" the car. He has amazing precision that allows him to counteract oversteer, so he can have more oversteer on the car and therefore more options for his lines, but that can't help him if he can't get any information out of it.

For instance, about the 23 Merc, Lewis has actually complained that he sits too far forward in the car and it feels too front focused. He can't get a feel for how the car is reacting in time to adapt to it. Oversteer informs his driving, it isn't how he drives.

Anyway this is a long way of saying I think the difference between Max/Michael and Lewis/Senna is that the first pair NEED excessive oversteer for the techniques they're using to work - their cars wouldn't make the corners if they had it taken away from them - but Senna and Lewis use oversteer to boost the other techniques that are core to their style. I think Senna and Lewis could probably thrive in any car, but Max and Michael both use very specific very niche styles and need a car that will compliment that to do their best.

God now it's my turn to apologise for rambling. Disclaimer I'm not an expert a lot of this is actually me spitballing and going off of memories and observations over the years. Except for Gábor Wéber, his style analysis is fascinating.

biting the bullet and saying why not! i usually avoid protagonist types because i get intimidated by the amount of detail and canon i feel like i have to memorize in order to properly do them justice, same with more 'popular' charas/muses giving me more personal pressure to be a portrayal worth.... something?? respect and validity?? attention and friendship from my mutuals lmao 😭 but considering dnangel was painfully niche (despite the way everybody and their mom at least recognizes it) and about half the series was only in japanese anyways, (let's see you try to find full-length dnangel LN translations that aren't mine) AND it's been like 30 years since the series started, i figured i'd have nothing to lose if my tried my best with daisuke. dai's always basically been my first magical girl (boy-) exposure and for that i'm very grateful. i still remember how beautiful sugisaki's art was to me even while being shook that dai was falling off a cliff in vol 2. my whole life might as well have led up to this point is basically what i'm saying-

i just like writing in general really. if you write with me i really enjoy it. thank u so much💐✨. being able to take dark and daisuke out of their somewhat limited canon and put them through certain experiences or in front of certain personalities that i'd otherwise never ever get to see is very fulfilling for me, especially since the series probably won't get anymore updates in the future (holding out for an anime revival but for now i'll take the brand new 2024 drama cd.) if we're talking deepest indulgences... off the top of my head, i really like it when dark gets to be actually intimate with others without worrying over the curse or keeping any secrets for daisuke, which includes him being with even younger muses who just kind of marvel at him and look up to him be it as an older brother type figure or not. on daisuke's side of things, i'm just like sugisaki lmfao- i like it when he gets to do things and actually prove to muses that he's a) capable and unstoppable when he tries and b) actually kind of an impulsive hothead underneath all the anxiety dkjfkgjk.

ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ?

i wish i was the sort of person to spitball silly little headcanons out one after another but i'm not. most headcanons i have usually fulfill some kind of thematic or relate directly to canon; dark's skin being ice-cold and marble-smooth is all headcanon, him having fangs (sharp teeth) and claws is very very arguably headcanon, (as in, canon never comments on either or, but let it me known my dark absolutely does have these features,) all to better suit and exaggerate his role as 'the beast' and something inhuman, on the scarier and supernatural side of things. daisuke tumbling locks as a (quite telling to the perceptive) habit with his hands is headcanon, and so is his and dark's shared appreciation for fruits/sweets --- it's part of the fractured fairy-tale motif, but also the biblical, which both often have overlapping dealings and warnings in regards to sins, temptations, and pride, a la eating the apple / the gingerbread house. dark and dai are both the tempers and the ones tempted, but they're also thieves and possessive saviors; their eyes are kind but covet, their hands are cold but their smiles are warm, they clutch at and take anything that isn't theirs but often for the sole sake of keeping and protecting it. most of my headcanons end up revolving around that sort of thing.

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ɪɴ ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴏʀ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴜꜱɪᴄ?

my surroundings are endlessly noisy so i usually have something playing. it's also why i write better at night during dead hours because it's quietest, but by then i'm usually worn out and just want to sleep 😂

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴇꜱ ᴏʀ ᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ?

i'm a winger. if i focus too long on quality for literally every single interaction i'd never get any replies out, but i do enjoy writing more complex/dramatic replies for mutuals whose styles better suit it. this is why my writing style shifts around between asks/responses/mutuals sometimes, although sometimes it's on purpose. dark's responses can seem far more complex and grandiose than daisuke's at times, but that's because mentally, daisuke's much younger and simpler and much more emotional/energetic. if i'm really inspired by a response but don't have the immediate time to sit and focus on a full length reply, sometimes i'll just jot down a sentence or two i want to use so i don't forget into my notes app, and it's usually smooth sailing from there.

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ꜱʜɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ?

romantic? it's not my priority, especially since my standards are very strict. i refuse to get into a ship that feels empty because forcing something i don't actually feel for is the fastest way to kill off my muse. idc about kisses and i sure as hell don't do smut, my muse (both of them, dark included at least physically) is a minor, but if something happens naturally (which isn't at all impossible, this is daisuke i'm writing here,) then i'll roll with it and see where it goes. really it's not daisuke developing an attraction to another muse that i'm afraid of, just annoying muns or getting a negative reaction to potentially introducing any kind of narrative conflict. i like some drama. i like some figuring it out. i like depth touching depth. daisuke's entire life/series begins with him literally being rejected by his first crush on his birthday and he's part of a buy one boyfriend get one free package alongside dark; he's always got a lot to figure out. so i guess my advice is really don't ask me to ship unless you're fully prepared to understand what exactly that means with daisuke.

romance aside? i love daisuke having mentors. or rivals. or people he attaches to as a sibling or some kind, given he's a lonely single child already used to being immensely responsible. or i like seeing him being stuck in complicated situations and putting other people into complicated dilemmas because his alignments are all over the place. he works with criminal muses, law-enforcement related muses, magical-related muses, inter-dimensional related muses, art-related muses, older or younger, nobility, there's sm you can do with him, he can go just about anywhere. i enjoy this.

So I got like five of these and out of canonical ships I don't have many so this is gonna be the real list ( probably with the boring picks ) and the others will be spitballing off the dome - like an idiot.

A.K.A. DUH number one. This is actually one of the very very few gripes that I had with the world Insomniac created for the Spider-Man game, that being her exclusion. While I do appreciate that it makes his relationship with Mary Jane deeper because they were friends when they were younger and he cared for her since the beginning instead of her coming after Gwen I just . . . really do like Gwen Stacy. I know their relationship dynamic from TASM is probably better well known I enjoy how she was in original comics after the death of her father ( which naturally she blamed on Spidey) and that obviously leaves Peter conflicted. If I recall she died never knowing he was under that mask.

Beyond that, I do think they complement each other well since she was also very intelligent. Love the thought of him being able to bounce ideas off of her and get feedback. Issues with webbing fluid, web shooters, how to deal with specific enemies.

𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘 𝐉𝐀𝐍𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐒𝐎𝐍 -

A.K.A. DUH number two. Look we all knew she would be on here. This was Stan Lee's favorite ship and while I have a few issues with how it's portrayed some of the time ( and no we are not talking about the current run by HOLY SHIT ) it's solid. They are adorable af. She's great not only as Peter Parker's girlfriend / wife, but as her own character she can be amazing depending on who is writing her. Do love how they made her this ballsy journalist in the game because it allowed her to share in some of Peter's responsibility even when he tried to stop her. This desire to tell the truth no matter the cost.

And oh my god I am not going to bury this post in how I feel about her in Renew Your Vows. Maybe we could have given her a better alias than Spinneret but who gives a damn you let Mary Jane Watson put on her own suit and be a web head?? Y'all let her chuck a damn subway train because YOU DON'T TOUCH MY HUSBAND??? Let her be a mama bear for their child, let her protect her husband because he needs help too, more than just emotionally - I just.... I'll stop now.

C'mon . . . this is just Batman and Catwoman with more spider-based quipping and a less gruff good guy. When we allow Felicia to be a 3-dimensional character and more than just ❝ Hot Girl Wears Tight Catsuit, Steals Shiny Thing, Teases Superhero ❞ the potential of them together is great. I think two of my favorite depictions of their relationship both come from cartoons instead of comics ( comics which I still need to read... sue me ). When she first appears in Spider-Man the Animated Series she wasn't even Black Cat yet, just Felicia Hardy, well off and somehow crushing on fucking Peter Parker of all people. Then they lead into her becoming the cat burglar we all know in such a great way.

Then her episodes in Spectacular Spider-Man? The episode where she tries to break her dad out of jail and it just so happens that HE's the man who killed Uncle Ben?? And then his morality and anger gets the old man to decide to stay in jail, and accept his punishment, and she just goes off on Pete... gives me feelings.

𝐊𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐘 𝐏𝐑𝐘𝐃𝐄 -

Alright, we're getting a tad bit more interesting, out of the most common territory. So, I am not a big fan of the Ultimate Universe and there are some obvious reasons for this. One of the things that I did enjoy was the relationship between Peter and Kitty and it just makes sense that he'd end up romancing with a mutant. Somehow he has had this fairly close relationship with the X-Men for a long time and to my recollection almost never has any romance with a mutant? Why??

While how they chose to make Peter Parker an absolute asshole considering how he ended things with Kitty, which if I'm not wrong was that he just ghosted her and went to MJ?, it was cute while it lasted.

You can't tell me that dating a FORENSIC SCIENTIST isn't completely on brand for Peter? Just so happens to be a close friend of Harry Osborn's current flame. Adorable as all hell. Is it a bit odd that he asked her out at a costume party where she was dressed as his EX-girlfriend Black Cat? Oh yeah, totally, but it's comics so what are you gonna do?

They were just adorable. Naturally, they weren't fated to date forever, she broke up with him after putting together that he was Spider-Man. Seeing as he lied to her their entire relationship instead of just fessing up to the dual identity.

Gordon Freemind (HalMind)

Sexuality Headcanon: Questioning. He was straight before he pulled Hal out of that pipe, but now he's not so sure, kissing dudes is Kind Of Cool, Actually. He'll probably land on Bisexual or maybe Pansexual in the end. Gender Headcanon: Cisgender Male A ship I have with said character: Hal x Gordon >:3c They kiss and make out and smooch even >>>:3c A BROTP I have with said character: I think Mindey would be very on-and-off when it comes to being friends with people A NOTP I have with said character: Any ship where he's degraded. To each their own, I respect that, but I Fawking hate that shit. It Icks me way the hell out, keep it away from me. A random headcanon: THEATERRRR!!! 👏👏👏👏 I really lean into him having a thing for Theater stuff, based on him singing the Modern Major General song in episode 45. He and Hal watch musicals together and depending which one it is, they know all the songs and the words. His favorite is Pirates of Penzance, and Hal's is Cats. General Opinion over said character: I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM He really is the ideal man. He is me, we are each other. His entire monologue is just what goes through my head as I react to my day-to-day life. Loving him helps me to love myself, and it's been very healing to know this character.

Gordon Feetman (FeetHal)

Sexuality Headcanon: I think he's probably Biesxual, but he leans towards women. Gender Headcanon: I dunno, I would just say Cisgender Male off the top of my head, but whatever is cool lol. I don't sit on any one side of the line for Feetman just yet. A ship I have with said character: I don't really know, there are a few good, interesting ships with Feetman that I like. Feetman x Freeman(og) when people post that stuff. Freeman(og) seems level headed and sturdy, and he helps ground Feetman with all his flighty panic in a really nice way. A BROTP I have with said character: TOMMMYYYYYY I love the way Feetman and Tommy interact. Tommy becomes like a beloved kid of Feetman's or something, and it's just really endearing. I wish there was more content of Tommy and Feetman interacting like that. Always send me Tommy art >:3c I love him. /pla A NOTP I have with said character: Him and Benrey (fenrey??) Feetman Fawking hates Benrey and he makes that damn clear from Episode one to the finale. I've never liked those ships where the characters hate each other and then people ship them based on the fact that they are mutually incompatible. That said, I always abide by 'To Each Their Own'. Whatever makes people happy, go n' do that so long as it doesn't hurt anybody lol. A random headcanon: His kid Joshua. I wanna see more Joshie content, nobody talks about his kid aside from 2 people, lol. I think Feetman would be a good father just based on the way he acts with Tommy. General Opinion over said character: I like him :3 I don't really have any critiques or anything, I just see him and go "Haha there's that goofy-ass guy again :3"

The idea of Courage having a blessed Copycat Ballyhoo ability somehow slipped past me but makes so much sense!

As I am thinking about it, perhaps Courage’s copycat ability is just as powerful as the user if not more due to the blessed state in fact-!

What if his copied other abilities become blessed aka the better versions of said ability such as Kerm’s Product Placement or Yoge’s Simulcast?

I know that would make Courage overpowered in ways, but a drawback might be that Courage would need to see the Ballyhoo in action in order to perfectly copy it? Maybe even make physical contact with the user? (I am just spitballing ideas at 1 am-)

For Swipe’s I thought more on it and his omniscience would not make him invulnerable. I agree on that but it would be similar to Five’s Cue Card / Full Script in concept?

It’s like his Info gives him everything he needs, he just has to make that chain of events happen? I am sorry if it doesn’t make sense it’s hard to describe what I am imagining.

oh that's a cool concept, i like that!!! especially since uh... well... it seems yoge may be out of action (hopefully not permanently), courage being able to use an upgraded ability similar to simulcast would be hugely beneficial! and i do agree it may make him overpowered in some ways, but i like the drawback you mentioned!!!! also. i think the gay little dog deserves to be overpowered. as a treat.

also oooooh that's a cool concept!!!! no i understand what you mean--so essentially a powered swipes wouldn't necessarily be completely omniscient, but i can see it being similar to full script!!!! perhaps instead of determining every possible future, it would allow him to determine everything he needs to know in that moment??

actually, just a thought: maybe he would be able to identify other ballyhoo users and immediately know the gist of how their ballyhoo works. that, combined with what we've talked about with courage, could add to even more of those two being a dynamic duo and keep their ballyhoos at a level where they complement each other!

as i head into the final case, the resolve of ryunosuke naruhodo: we are going into the fire. all will be revealed. the horrors unveiled. it's time. answers at any cost.

but first: brain vomit

i spent a lot of time theorizing on who the final defendant would be, only for it to just be the same trial. marginally disappointing but it's probably for the best. not sure if my heart could take more people dying

that being said: Herlock as a defendant (my top contender) would have been interesting. deeply.

the case title worries me. to be fair, everything about the setup here worries me. i suspect it will be unpleasant, if cathartic

i've been thinking this from practically the moment we met, but i strongly believe Stronghart will be the final baddie/final witness. it feels so obvious. almost too obvious. which is why i'm now second-guessing myself. i dont have a backup theory though. so.

i'm not sure i buy Gregson as the Reaper. it makes sense, but i have a nagging doubt. what about Gina? he told us that he was taking Gina to France to protect her. and that could be a lie, but. i don't know.

or actually. hang on. having a thought. He was the Reaper-or involved-and never felt doubt about his involvement until Gina. knows that the Reaper can't act outside of Britain (esp with Shinn dead) and so plans to flee with Gina. this gets him killed by the one in charge of the whole Reaper thing?

i honestly don't know. but there's more to it than what Zieks thinks. than what we all think.

Vigil is either lying to us or not all of his memories have returned. i swear he has Genshin's ring, from the Barok flashback. how would he have it?

on a similar note: the governor of the prison is not telling us everything.

i'm fairly convinced Genshin is not the Professor, at this point. Or at least that there's more going on there. He saved Barok. He wrote some weird papers (which are not the ones we were given, no way), he still doesn't really have a motive. The whole giant dog aspect of the case. The Baskervilles. There's more to this.

terrible thought i had: Dr. John H. Wilson. he was even a professor!

or Stronghart. again. i don't know.

i'm still waiting to see if Van Zieks and Stronghart are related. they have the same crest. it. worries me.

speaking of Van Zieks. god. the scene after the trial where he's his usual terrible self and then Ryunosuke is like "is that any way to talk to your lawyer" and then van Zieks apologized? so satisfying. you tell him, Ryunosuke.

i just like it when Ryunosuke gets a bit snippy. see: every time he called van Zieks his "learned friend" like go off. get him.

also i cannot believe Kazuma kept calling Ryunosuke his 'learned friend' during the trial what is Wrong With Him.

i miss my sword. obs it is good that Kazuma is alive and gets his sword back, but i miss the sword. its so fun.

at least Kazuma finally talked to Ryunosuke. like. way later that he could have but at least he did. thank you. i appreciate someone being honest with me. its so rare.

okay. Iris' dad possibilities time:

Mikotoba: unlikely. its possible, but it feels unlikely. gut instinct. i want to not be disappointed in him.

Dr. John H. Wilson: it could still be him, but i doubt it. he apparently didn't seem to have a family?

Herlock: plausible. unfort. will explode him with my mind if so. could not fathom a reason why he'd lie to Iris if so. although im sure one would exist

one of the nobles (Klint) killed by the Professor: spitballing. the og hound of the baskervilles had something to do with killing heirs. i don't know. concerned.

Gregson. highly unlikely but also. i don't know.

Mycroft: my crack theory. we dont even know if there Is a Mycroft.

i have more thoughts (incoherent yelling) but idk

if herlock does not have a good explanation for everything i will flip my lid. kazuma. iris wilson. the professor. the baskervilles. why was he even on the SS Burya? he has much to answer for.

There was silence for a minute, and Melanie looked at Ben, and then back at Javi, biting her lip. When she finally looked back at Ben, he gave a small shrug and nodded. They always were good at communicating without words.

"You can if you like," she said carefully to Javi.

He furrowed his brow, and she knew he hadn't understood.

"Fuck us both. You can. If you like."

Javi coughed, his eyes wide. It wasn't a no.

Melanie stepped towards him, and he suddenly felt very warm.

"Stick her on auto for a couple of hours, Javi. If… if that head of yours agrees with…" she nodded down at the bulge still covered by his hands, "that head of yours."

Javi coughed again. It wasn't like he hadn't thought about it before. The three of them, stuck up here for the past year. The way Melanie touched his shoulder at the end of a shift. The way Ben did push-ups in just his boxer shorts. But what if this was just another joke? What if -

He nodded his head before he could think too hard about it, before looking quickly at Ben, who gave him a small smile, and a tiny nod just as Melanie straddled his legs.

"In that case," she whispered, hot in his ear, "I really can't wait to feel that fat cock inside me."

God I wish there was more to say about this one. This whole chapter was me trying to work out how to dirty talk without it explicitly being like... Degradation or Praise kink. I couldn't find a way to do it that wasn't funny!

I usually headcanon Javi as ace but I also accept any queer reading of him and as some of you know one of my favourite fics is Mel/Ben/Javi. I think it's only natural that (if he's not asexual) Javi would have thoughts about the other engineers after being cooped up in there for so long. After all he hasn't got a girlfriend... And Javi just loves it when people are nice to him.

I really wanted to include Javi's headphones because I think they're iconic. I too like to block out the world whilst I work. So the idea that Mel and Ben would mess with him whilst he's got them on was too good to miss.

I love love love the idea that after so many years, Mel and Ben can communicate in little glances. This is not based on any real experience for me though, I've been with the same person for 13 years and am still constantly mouthing "what???" at her across the room!

What else to say... Ohhhh the wordplay. "Fuck you both" to "you can. Fuck us both." It made me chuckle when I wrote it. There's a similar play in the Mel/Ben/Ruth chapter too - "the question is whether I like this... Or this" "what's the answer?" "Yes." I don't know it's all super cliché it just makes me happy to write it.

This head and that head is something someone said to me the first time I spitballed GP!Mel. Something about thinking with the right head? Idk it's funny though.

One of my favourite things to read, and hence to write, is when the narration takes on the inner thoughts of the character which then get interrupted by the action. I like cutting sentences off in the middle to show that actions are cutting off thoughts. I like the changing rhythm of it.

As for the ending we circle back to me being terrible at dirty talk! It ended up not being one I felt any desire to write actual sex acts for, I think other people have done it better. But maybe someday.

AGH!

I have another brainworm today, courtesy of scrolling through @gayemeralds blog last night and seeing their take on the Sonic films, which I haven’t even watched except for a few clips this morning. And it may or may not be apparent at this stage, but when my brain sees something broken in a fandom I love, IT STARTS SPITBALLING WAYS TO FIX IT, so... Here we are again.

Primary issue with Filmverse Sonic: the themes don’t match. Not within the canon of the filmverse, but against just about every other iteration of Sonic that’s ever existed; there’s a de-emphasis on freedom and exploration and more of a focus on security, home being a single place, and finding happiness staying still.

NOW, part of the reason for that is that Sonic is given good cause to feel more nebulous about a nomadic on-the-move lifestyle than other incarnations, as the opening of the first movie shows us. Instead of running being his personal freedom, it’s framed as necessary for his safety against a threat that’s immediately made very tangible, so the idea of not having to run anymore and finding a place he can return to would be a source of comfort, not unrest for him (barring dealing with the trauma of his guardian sacrificing herself for him, natch.)

Simple enough to remedy, methinks; if you want to maintain Longclaw’s role in the story–and actually, the first few minutes does pretty decently setting up the ‘chosen one AND just some guy’ dichotomy for Sonic–then just spice things up with a little subtlety.

How about Longclaw realizes one day that a threat, may or may not be made clear it’s the Echidna tribe, has found the island and so she pulls one of the cons parents sometimes do; “Say, Sonic, I think we should play a game today. You’ve been good about staying cooped up, I know it’s hard. How about you take these rings and see if you can hide out on a different world? I’ll come looking for you in a little while; make sure you do a good job hiding! Take some extra rings in case you get lost.”

Obviously, she doesn’t follow, Sonic waits her out until he realizes she isn’t coming, he might find his way back to Mobius and discover her fate or he might not; in any case, he still ends up on Earth, running from his past (and from those looking for him, whether or not he knows it) and in doing so, learns to find comfort in being on the move.

Bonus, that initial betrayal of his trust makes him wary of bonding with anyone, adults in particular. Also, if the movie knows what its doing, don’t reveal all the origin stuff outright in the first five minutes; hint at it throughout and then give the audience a WHAMMY when he finally talks about feelings because he learns to trust later in the film, or even in the second film.

Alternate opening: slow fade in, a scene of grassy knolls, gradual pan out to reveal a highway and power lines, confirming we’re on Earth and not Mobius. Still shot, music, then SHOOOOM! blue blur tearing past breaks the soundtrack.

Cut to a stretch of highway farther on, SFX tell us the blurs’ moving from stage right and going to come into shot; a car appears in eyeline first, and the streak of blue leaps into bushes off the main drag.

Car passes. Spines pop out. Green eyes glance after the car’s rear bumper. Sonic’s voice starts narrating over his actions.

“I know what you’re thinking; you’re wondering, who’s that handsome blue devil?” etc. etc.

Maybe that’s just me. ANYWHO. That explains Sonic’s fierce independence and initial wariness to interact with others and why he feels the way he does about a static life in the same place. We’ve gotten rid of that part of the “happiness can be found standing still” theme. The other portion stems from Tom’s existence, which was another complaint and I’ll get to that, but first!

What breaks Sonic’s status quo of hiding and self-isolation? Who does he interact with first?

Maddie.

He finds an injured animal–bird, rodent, any small critter he could actually carry–and being the inherently good dude he is, wants to help. He tries on his own, since anything else would require approaching humans, before he admits the problem is beyond his capabilities and he looks for a vet: hence, Maddie.

Maybe initially he goes at night to help him avoid being seen, before it sinks in that people and even vets have working hours and so he camps out as near town as possible while remaining hidden until it opens and drops off the injured critter at the back door and making a racket to guarantee someone will find it. He only watches the place long enough to assure himself that the birdie’s been helped properly before he runs again.

He hopes that’s the end of things, that he doesn’t have to put himself at risk of being seen again, but no; he keeps finding wayward, inexplicably weak/injured creatures in the forest (OOH, this can tie into Robotnik) and so against what he thinks is his better judgement he keeps making drop offs.

At some point, he becomes just a touch too comfortable with it, because the animals are getting help each time and he isn’t getting caught, and one night he naps a little longer than he means too outside the back door to the clinic and Maddie sees him. *Cue awkward beat of silence as they both realize several things, and Sonic wants to flee but he can’t move too fast before he passes off the injured birdie*

Lacking anything else to say to the bright blue talking hedgehog that’s been dropping off nearly half of her recent patients, Maddie politely asks if he’s had any problems he wants looked at. Sonic gives her a wary glance and a shake of his head before disappearing again.

Contact established, an acquaintance and subsequent friendship can develop. Sonic lingering longer at drop offs, checking in on his tiny rescue critters, Maddie inferring that he likes being off the grid and takes pains to hide lingering quills or other traces he leaves behind without meaning to, she starts smuggling snacks into work because she doesn’t know whether this skittish little friend-shaped creature last ate, inevitably Sonic shows up at her door injured himself.

Maddie reaches a point where she realizes Sonic should probably be exposed to more interaction/socialization/beings who can talk to him than the quasi-daily five minutes he spends with her.

Enter Tom.

Now, whether or not Tom needs to exist in the filmverse at all is up for grabs, but let’s run with the thread of keeping him. First and foremost, he cannot be a cop, or at least cannot stay a cop unless he’s only there for a minor comic relief part and showing police ineptitude when it comes to or compared against Sonic. SO.

We make him a liiiiiiiitle bit of a human parallel to the blue blur. Let’s say he’s... a few years younger. Not a teenager by any stretch, he still lives on his own, but he’s lost; emotionally, spiritually, whatever. Got his own sad story to tell or not tell, pretty new to the force, certainly not a sheriff. In limbo w/ no family, not unlike Sonic, not particularly interested in being a cop but applied to for the job “For security, I guess. We need to put down roots, right? (he said, sounding only marginally sure at best)”

Closet nerd–might be relevant for second film when he meets Tails and they can mutually geek out over ancient stuff–secret desire to explore the world, possible amateur history buff, and the last thing he shares in common with Sonic is that he’s friends with Maddie. Since Tom doesn’t take his job all too seriously and, in Maddie’s words “Only thinks he’s a grown up” she figures he’s the ideal person to just hang out with Sonic a little. “Y’know, if you want to talk to somebody while I’m at work.”

(Also, Tom’s holding onto a power ring that’s since lost its luster, though he obviously doesn’t know what it is and this could help break the ice between him and Sonic so they have more than superficial conversations and also tie into lore about the emeralds being on Earth later and Tom’s obviously not got some super important lineage or anything he’s just some guy like Sonic but the ring found its way to him and adfsdfsdf MOVING ON.)

Then, Robotnik. He’s.... very very clearly characterized in the films to cater the stories toward young children to get them into Sonic. Or to be what some people think cater more toward young children; it’s not that kids wouldn’t like the other incarnations of Eggman that already exist.

The aim of his portrayal’s another issue: fact remains, he’s only just kinda gets a pass as Eggman. There’s not really much trace of the hyper-calculating straight up mean bastard we all know Robotnik is. He does mean things, sure, but I mean... eh. Rather than investing quite so much in him being funny, nudge that aim slightly to the left closer to unhinged. Because as anyone on this site will tell you, unhinged leads to some downright hilarity.

Make his status as a respected intellect on Earth more begrudging, establish somehow that a lot of people think he’s lost a fair bit of the plot because he’s held the existence of Mobius as a pet theory for years and no one’s listened to him. Remember when I mentioned him earlier? Have him doing experiments and screwed up things to the wild critters because his machines have detected traces of peculiar energy signatures lingering around them; energy that emanates from Sonic.

Also, that guy who apparently... makes him coffee? Simps for him? Haven’t watched the films, and even seeing clips I don’t remember his name, but HO BOY THE POTENTIAL THERE. You could take either the Snively route from SatAM or something closer to the comics/games and have one of the extra clips at the end of the first film’s credits (or in the midst of the second film before revealing Eggman’s returned) be the crony’s robotization. It’d be so easy to frame things in a way that’s funny enough on the surface for kids while the millennial fans will be laughing for entirely different reasons (”WHAHAHAHAHAAAAT THE FUUUHUHUHUUUCK!”)

Ahem.

Finally, the plot: my brainworm hasn’t quite progressed that far yet. But Robotnik would somehow discover evidence of Sonic’s existence and thus get an absurd amount of funding for hunting the hedgehog from the government, the police get involved, Tom Does Not Like how the police handle getting involved, Sonic ultimately grows enough to declare that he’s made friends and/or trusts the humans who’ve helped him, decides to start fighting instead of hiding, beats Robotnik (sends him to another world? I think that happens at the end of the first film?) and Tom is called in for doing some or many things against orders/regulations/whatever and he’s told he’s on suspension.

Then, in a subversion of every other scene we get when a cop is being suspended, when he pulls off his badge and looks at it and we get the close up shot of him holding it–contrary to every other such shot I can remember–it’s dirty. Damaged in action instead of something pristine, something to feel conflicted about. Someone says “It’ll be detailed and good as new when you come back.” Tom ends his role in the scene with “Don’t bother. I don’t want it.”

And he makes his exit.

Movie closes out (I thought maybe a spark between Maddie and Tom could model for Sonic a different kind of love than the one of a guardian or a friend, but it’s not essential) with the question of what Tom and Sonic are going to do now that the former’s quit his job and the latter’s existence has been outted.

Tom: “I dunno. But actually, I’m... I think I’m okay with that.” (Growth enough to let go of the idea that he could fix his restlessness by tying himself to one spot)

Sonic: “Lay low, I guess. Might pop over to another world for a bit,” (in response to sad looks) “I’ll definitely visit, though. Need my chili dog fix.”

“Nothing else?”

Cue Sonic opening his mouth for a wisecrack, and instead he chooses to let some vulnerability show through on his face. Maddie discreetly pulls out her phone to take a picture, realizing she doesn’t have any of her two friends in the same place at once.

Click.

Tom, for some reason, blinks, looking a little dazed, and Sonic refuses to make eye contact with either of them. They say their goodbyes and he speeds off.

Cut to Maddie checking her camera roll, only for a small miracle to greet her.

An almost perfectly captured millisecond of Sonic hugging Tom.

Soundtrack fades in over Tom driving into the sunset, driver’s side window rolled down and most of his life packed in the bed of the truck, a map for South America splayed open in the shotgun seat, the power ring hanging from a string around his neck. Close out on Sonic narrating again, introducing himself, upbeat tone notably more genuine than at the start of the film.

“I’m Sonic–Sonic the Hedgehog!”

OK sexuality, he's one of those clueless blissfully unaware closeted gay kids who doesn't realize they themselves are gay despite being 100% driven by way OTT subconscious gay thoughts and impulses 24/7/365. However he is (by the point of canon) about halfway through the process of transforming into ye olde self hating gay adult in conscious denial. I don't want him to fully reach that latter point even in AUs because at his core Silas is, to me, a funny character, and if he got all the way there it would be hard to make it feel funny enough to be him. Yes at his core he also is a tragic character but going too hard on the Consciously Self Hating Gay thing would lean too much on the tragic and not enough on the funny for me. I would accept it in small sexy doses like a depressing PWP.

My thoughts on silas gender are large, they contain multitudes. Um... it's hard for me to say headcanon because canonically it feels to me like everyone in TLT was written as binary cisgender. I do have thoughts about that but I've gone off about it on the TLT subreddit before and I'm not going to do it again here, it's not germane to the topic. Anyway whenever I'm talking about some TLT character's gender as far as the character being trans and/or nb it's not so much a headcanon as in "I think this is what's really going on," because I have very little doubt in my mind that was not intended for any of these characters, it's more "I think it would be neat if this was going on". I say all that as like a disclaimer before getting to the actual point which is that I really enjoy the idea of nonbinary transfem Silas and while I can't realistically see that being a thing during canon timeline if someone were writing like a long mostly-happy everyone-lives post-canon AU or something that's where I would want to see the character eventually end up. If that makes sense. I will happily admit that a lot of personal projection goes into this. I definitely don't think it's OOC to write him as a 100% cis guy forever, I can buy that too, it just isn't my first preference.

There are several TLT characters (like Harrow and sometimes Gideon!) where what I would want to be going on with them gender- and/or sexuality-wise in a modern/high school/college setting AU -- something I think about a lot because they're all so freakin young -- differs pretty drastically from what I want to be going on with them in canon and Silas is one of these. In a total reversal of everything that I would like to see with him in an extended canon timeline situation, in that kind of setting AU I usually imagine him as being a mostly binary identified trans guy. Partly because I like it and it makes more sense to me for how his character would develop to a recognizable point in the setting or whatever, but partly because a while back I was spitballing what the fuck could be some kind of outside-the-norm thing he and Colum could possibly share in such a normal setting and landed on oh hey wait what if they were both having complex similar yet different gender journeys in their fundamentalist family and ended up in a unique and close relationship because of that. So that reinforced it for me.

My point is he could be written with any gender and I would nod along like great, makes sense
