The George Takei episode! (shawn vs. the red phantom)
Im just going to start this one from the beginning. Look at Shawns face the moment he sees his father. He either instantly knew Henry was upset or is already bummed to have to interact with his dad, like he’s so used to feeling like shit afterwards.
Tumblr media
This has to be the biggest reach for henry though. You can’t like superheroes because they make cops look like idiots and they’re the real heroes. He’s so categorically wrong. First of all, police kind of suck lol. second of all, why was he so threatened by comic books??? Third of all, Shawns like 8 here. He’s not allowed to have an imagination??? How is Shawn a somewhat functional adult??
This explains early seasons Shawn so much. He’s a lot more judgmental, has a particular idea about manhood, and frankly comes across as the flippant “cool guy” from high school, the judd nelson if i may. But we later see that Shawn is just as much a dork as Gus, he just wasn’t allowed to be one. i never thought of this part as character development for Shawn, i always just assumed it was drift, like how Joey from Friends got stupider as the seasons progressed. But now i see it as Shawn becoming who he was always meant to be.
This part makes me laugh so much!
Tumblr media
Juliets a comic book fan too! I missed that the first time!
Shawn getting Takei to dislike Gus has to be the biggest dick move he’s done and I’m including drugging him haha. Takei was great. I feel like he’s played a primadonna version of himself a few times. That or I’m just remembering all the rewatches of Psych
I wonder how long lassiter and Vick knew each other before she became captain. Did she work there first? Were they rivals at some point? Or did she come from another precinct?

Idk if u have already but ur last post is now making me wonder how many times Shawn has slipped up in being obvious about his intelligence 🤔 i rlly like how u analyze and it would be cool if u did that for those situations :>
Have a great day💕
I was thinking i might discuss it in a later ep because later seasons they seem to really lean into him projecting stupidity. And i say projecting because we know he’s not. So yeah, i can keep track of times he accidentally shows his intelligence. I think it would be nice to have a list anyways :)
Thanks for the ask!

Who ya gonna call? (The DID/trans ep)
Ill be honest i was nervous to rewatch this one but turns out it held up better than i thought. I mean, the worst of it is that the DID person is the murderer but that was such a common tv thing back then for procedurals. Every one had to have a DID ep, even though, as Psych points out, its so exceedingly rare. I get it, its a fun concept, but yeah, don’t make them the violent ones when 9 times out of 10 they’re the victims of violent crimes. I will say though, Psych made sure to include they were getting the help they needed and they really didn’t have to.
But what a cool way to show it though, having the other personalities act like ghosts. It feels very poetic. And to have one personality trans is such an interesting layer on top of it. It really can’t get more complicated than that.
This episode also tells us so much about Lassiter! Hes trying desperately to win back his not-yet-ex wife its kind of heartbreaking. We’re starting Psych right at the beginning of Lassiters downfall. He gets separated, has an “affair” with his partner who gets reassigned because ppl found out thanks to Shawn, and i believe its later implied he lost the promotion to captain because of that affair. And then Shawn comes along and he’s solving his cases. I have to wonder though, since we see in this ep how distracted he can be when he has personal issues, if Lassiter isn’t necessarily a bad detective in the beginning but just going through some shit and missing things. It kind of makes me understand why he’s so hostile to Shawn in the beginning. Not that thats any excuse. Just because you’re having a bad day doesn’t mean you get to shit on other ppl’s. And it was fun to see lassiters and Juliets miscommunication. It was nice to see them easing into their partnership, and allowing friction, particularly:
Tumblr media
What was henry going to do if that kid just started wailing on shawn??? Honestly, probably would have tried to teach shawn how to hit back and would’ve got him pummeled.
Its kind of funny that in this ep Shawns all this guy believes in ghosts, hes crazy, when in later eps he’s so excited about aliens and bigfoot haha. I can only conclude Shawn doesn’t really believe in anything supernatural but definitely wants to. I think it would have been better if Shawn didn’t think the guy was crazy right off the bat but maybe had a stalker, or intruder. (P.s were the writers implying Shawn was right from the beginning and they were crazy, or was that just poor wording??)
Sidenote: Shawn just casually spoke german and seemingly understood her response. He probably simply knew enough to impress her, but still. He does this a few times i think in the series where he lets it slip how much he actually knows.

Weekend warriors is one of my fave episodes for a multitude of reasons
The way Shawn flirts with Sally Reynolds at the briefing was fantastic. Shes such a memorable one off character and she doesn’t really do much. I credit that to Clair Coffee and her dazzling smile.
One of the best moments of Shawn showing just how amazing his memory is, and the little montage was wonderfully set up. But Gus really shouldn’t be surprised by now. Out of everyone (except maybe his dad) he should be the least amazed by his gifts.
It has my favorite most stupidest joke i still laugh at to this day actually ive been promoted. Its Captain Crunch now.
I have a deep appreciation of this show for never shying away from the fact that Gus is black. It seems like a lot of 00’s shows simply avoided the topic altogether (if they even had a black main). Starting from the pilot when gus placed his hands on the dash when the cop pulled them over. It goes to show how important it is to collaborate with your actors, particularly if your writing room demographics don’t correlate with your acting talent.
The fuck are you talking about henry. It took him 4 months after he was born to smile at you and thats when you acknowledge him??? I mean, i think they both know thats crap, but still lol
Solid Juliet moment. I love that they showed she was scared, but was brave enough to continue. Too many shows try to do feminism by making their female characters not feel fear for some reason? Or like, they’re kind of crazy and seek it out. Idk. Its nice that shes allowed to be afraid and vulnerable. It makes her feel like a real person.
THIS!
Tumblr media
That end scene is the saddest fucking thing ive ever seen, and might be the most heartbreaking little shawn moment in the series. Im going to word for word this because i need ppl to share in my awwws
Shawn: Gus, when we grow up, think ill ever be as cool as you?
Gus: You’re better at kickball
Shawn: Not what I asked
Gus: We talking about your dad again?
Shawn: mm-hmm
Gus: Come on dude, the guy respects you
Shawn: Not like he does you
Gus: I’m not his son. I mean, he might like me okay, but he loves you
Shawn: Did he say that?
Gus: No.
Shawn: Well then how can you be sure?
Gus: You mean he’s never said it?
Shawn: Come on Gus, we’re guys.
SO MUCH TO UNPACK HERE but i’m going to do that in my henry analysis ep. Theres just too much to say.

9 lives is utterly bizarre (and probably problematic these days) but OH BOY Shawns chaotic bi-energy is at an all time high. And this is such a small thing, but when its implied shawn and gus are a couple, neither of them try to look gayer, which is a pet peeve of mine in media. But come on, Shawn casually sits on Lassiters lap and Lassiter just sits there stunned (and probably regrets coming into karens office- or not depending on what fanfic you read lol)
Shawn stepped in front of gus to protect him 🥹
And then gus stepped aside when it was pointed at him lol

Woman seeking dead husband, smokers okay, no pets (what a title but also this woman is a monster. Smokers okay but no pets??)
Genuinely has one of my fave psychic Shawn moments. Cause the guy is all prove it (threatening) how many fingers am i holding up? I meaaannn, 1. Thats how you want him to prove hes psychic?? 2. The look on Gus’s face when he shifted in front of him and he could see how many fingers now was priceless!
The beginning of Gus’s very questionable taste in women. They’re either the murderer or absolutely unhinged
The outtakes in this ep where james is just riffing- i genuinely think he’s a very talented person. He’s got the comedy chops for sure but I also watched him in A Million Little Things too and he did a phenomenal job dramatically (his character made me cry all the goddamn time). You can definitely tell where james influence comes in, as he tends to be a bit more mature.
Sidenote: I know its a family show but i would have loved to let our cast curse. I feel like shawn would actually cuss very little but it would always serve a purpose (usually to make someone laugh). Gus would curse only under his breath, and typically directed at Shawn. Lassiter is a free curser, letting the fucks fly as they please. Juliet privately curses like a sailor but she’s not very good at hiding it. Henry and Karen are both too professional to curse but both will let it rip when shit hits the fan.

Speak now or forever hold your piece, or as i like to call it, the Shawn wears a suit episode ;)
This ep is fine. I mean im not really watching it for the crimes anyways but like, no one opened the dumbwaiter since she shoved him in there?
Lassiter is very handsy in this ep, throwin’ Shawn all over the place ;) you can tell james and tim are already vibin’
Henry so clearly only called Shawn to bitch about the box of trophies because hes a man and god forbid he simply call his own son just to talk. Though, perhaps he also called because he was hoping Shawn would need his help on a case. Its the only detective work he’s touched in years, and that man was OBSESSED.
I love how shawn makes the receptionist and bell hop feel so important even though he was using them. He’s just so good with people

So, to be honest, spelling bee is an ep that had to grow on me. It just always seemed too outlandish of a crime i think, idk. But the ep does show us more about shawns dysfunctional relationship with his father and Gus’s motivation to participate in Psych. Not to mention Juliet.
Gus is highly intelligent but in a way that feels he never utilized it properly. He has the mental fortitude to become a doctor if he wanted, he has the drive and the willpower it takes to become invested (as shown with how deep his knowledge of the bee and other subjects goes), yet he never did. We see in the pilot how little he actually cares for his “real” job. It pays the bills, thats it. At the end of the day, Gus plays it safe, and you get the feeling in the pilot that he’s not happy with where he’s at. He’s stagnant. Unfulfilled. Just as lost as Shawn.
In a lot of ways, they’re similar with that aspect. Both him and shawn have a variety of interests and skills, yet neither seemed to pursue a career in those fields. In shawns case, in his own words “he mastered it and moved on.” He got bored (ahem, ADHD). But i think in Gus’s case, he was too afraid to try. Or maybe nothing quite gave him enough of a spark to want to. As everyone later points out, Gus has a shit ton of potential that never seemed properly used.
Until Shawn comes around. And he needs him. He needs all of Gus’s knowledge and skills. He even finds the clues that the doctor was fake and Jari was sitting next to the kid with the inhaler. And its fun. He’s excited. Psych brings him joy.
As for our intro to Juliet- fantastic. We learn so much from so little screen time. She can banter with Shawn easily, and isn’t afraid to give pushback or to give Lassiter pointers (which considering she’s like brand new and he’s a bit of a prick is saying something), and she trusts her instincts to follow through with Shawns advice. Shes a good cop. Almost the antithesis to Lassiter. Shes warm, friendly, and trusting to his cold, distant, and weary.
Side note:
James motorcycle face makes me lol every goddamn time

Im doing a complete rewatch of Psych and imma have thoughts for the next couple weeks so prepare yourselves accordingly haha
To start, the pilot of Psych is actually highly enjoyable to me. And i have a few notes:
This is actually a great introduction to who Shawn is as a person. Shawn is highly intelligent sure, but the way he approaches people with sympathy and respect is what makes him so enjoyable to watch. In this episode alone, we see him smiling as buzz dances in the closet, he helps the handcuffed man initially, tells desk sgt. Allen (who deserves more credit for being Shawns inspiration to become psychic) to stop paying for all the fake psychics and got her to quit smoking (in a later ep). Plus, i believe he went to Mccalister not just to confront him but to gage whether he was going to turn him in or not. Which is interesting because he seems to sympathize with him, despite clearly relating more to being the one disappointing his father. I think he was giving him a chance to do the right thing, which he would expect his own father to do.
But it also tells us how much he needs to solve puzzles. Shawn could have walked away with everyone happy but instead he needed to know. He has a natural curiosity but on top of that, i think he needed to prove to himself that he could do it. He spent the first 18 years of his life being told he wasn’t doing anything right, specifically regarding the skills he was using to solve this case. So he had to solve it and solve it correctly.
I can understand why they had to get rid of lucinda (anne dudek) but i actually liked her character for the brief moment we had her and seeing the fallout of their relationship could have been interesting for lassiters character. But overall, i do prefer the naive full-hearted juliet.
Sidenote- Idk what it is about the theme song, but from day one it has filled my soul with such warmth, like it was instantly nostalgic and comforting.

Ahem. I also just watched that 3hr youtube video. So credit where credit is due, they also got me to start rewatching it haha
youtube
psych renaissance when. I think it’s time for a reexamination by the masses. let’s get some fresh discourse and drama. it’s lighthearted and fun and then it’s NOT. there’s halloween episodes. it ask the brave question of “what if a bisexual court jester with adhd was genuis and used his powers as an excuse to run around with bestie everyday (theyre disgustingly (affectionate) codependent) being silly n solving crimes”. grown men screaming in fear like five year olds
