died and came back exactly the same but something was so so so wrong with me before and now I have an excuse to really lean into it

So my question as a late arrival to the tumblr fandom is what on GODS GOOD EARTH could POSSIBLY be the context of the removing-splinters-from-his-dick post
Oh well. We used to imagine that Wilford would fuck the puppets from late season 2 (there’s an episode where he puts on this demented puppet show with Melanie and Alex puppets as well as a Ben one I think?) and we thought that if he fucked the Melanie puppet (e.g. stuck his dick in it) it would give him splinters 🥴 crazy right haha 🥴

First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. You would think that this implies a middle point where it is just big enough of a deal to get done easily, however the inherent perversity of the universe's causal geometry prevents this

Things turn out the way they do in s1 precisely because the rebellion happens at the same time as Nolan Grey's power grab.
I could go into so much headcanon/expression analysis about Ruth and Nolan's date but to avoid all the melruthy stuff let's stick to the fact it is abundantly clear that Ruth becomes distinctly uncomfortable when the Folgers arrive and they discuss replacing Melanie.
So uncomfortable in fact that she immediately leaves the date and looks everywhere for Melanie. Her first reaction is to tell Melanie, to protect Melanie, to be on her side.
The trouble is Melanie in her wisdom is busy freezing digits and or vomiting out of guilt.
So when Ruth does find her, she's completely at the end of her tether with what she thinks is another bullshit complaint from First. Especially since their previous interactions were characterised by Ruth being critical either of Melanie specifically or of Melanie/Wilford's recent un-wilfordlike decisions.
So Melanie loses her shit at Ruth and hits her right where it hurts. Remember we the audience have literally only just discovered Ruth's back story in the B&B.
"This isn't a bed and breakfast, Ruth"
She's pulling rank in the worst possible way. Telling Ruth the things she deals with are trivial. Belittling Ruth's past life. Refusing to listen even when Ruth tries to get her to see this is something else entirely.
And there's this moment where you just see Ruth realise she doesn't have to take this shit any more.
And Melanie unkowingly legitimises the coup. Sure, LJ would have gone to the engine anyway but Melanie, with Ruth at her side, could have headed off the Folgers and Grey, and LJ wouldn't have immediately been believed. If Melanie had known about the conversation and immediately acted by removing Grey as commander of the jackboots, the rebellion may not have made the progress it did.
Idk there's obviously a lot that would still have happened (just differently, less explosively) but it feels like by shunning Ruth at the worst possible moment Melanie effectively signs her own death sentence.
There's a whole essay of thoughts in my head about how Ruth would have taken the No Wilford thing had they been on better terms to begin with but when Ruth finds out the truth she does so already severely pissed at Melanie and turns to the one person who had been nice to her and seemed to respect her...
Losing my mind over how 3.3 seasons worth of drama could have been avoided if Melanie didn't insult Ruth's job history
