Jack had been having a tough time lately, adjusting to life back home after the whirlwind of his life the last three years.
“Baby” you kissed his shoulder blades as he softly snored beside you.
You knew he had only just fallen asleep after yet another sleepless night. Christmas was around the corner, and he had been overworking himself to get this album done, intending for a late January or early February release.
You went into the guest bathroom and got ready hoping to leave the house before he woke up for the day.
Your phone vibrating as you had finally gotten the call you’d been hoping for.
Jack had been casually mentioning how much he wanted a dog for the past couple of months, often reminiscing about his childhood pet. You had been going to an animal shelter looking for a specific breed, hoping that you’d get lucky.
You remembered how often Jack would tell you how much he loved his family dog and how he wanted the have one of his own someday. Considering how much he had been going through you thought getting him a dog now would somehow make him feel better, or ease the load.
After you had been consistently showing up at the shelter for a while, one of the girls who worked there reached out to you asking what you were looking for and putting you on a list to be called if a dog in that breed ever came in.
You were starting to give up hope until you had gotten the call this morning. Once you had finished getting ready you went into the bedroom to check if Jack was still asleep. When you saw him sleeping you kissed his head gently before quietly leaving, eager to go to the shelter first thing.
You drove down to the shelter, worried they’d place her with someone else if you didn’t hurry.
When you arrived she was up front with the staff, being passed around from arm to arm.
“Where do I sign?” You asked, holding the puppy close to you worried someone would take her away.
The employees smiled at you, printing out the necessary paperwork.
“Would you like to pick out a collar? We usually give out free ones with any adoption!”
You nodded looking through their options before picking out a silky purple one with a bow on it. You slipped it on her admiring how adorable she looked.
“Such a beautiful girl!” You cooed at her, kissing her on the curly head.
After you signed the paperwork she was officially adopted and all yours. You had carefully placed her on a pile of blankets in your passenger seat and wrapped her up in one for security.
You went to the nearest pet store to buy her all the things she needed, knowing full well you were going overboard the second you walked in.
“Your daddy is gonna love you so much,” you said, reaching your hand out to pet her head. You softly giggled noticing her and Jack had matching hairstyles.
Once you had gotten to the pet store you put her in the cart like she was a child.
You were definitely taking this mothering thing to a whole new level with her already.
“Okay, little missy what kind of bed do you want? Looks like we have a sad beige color” You looked at her and smiled when she didn’t find your antics amusing.
“Yeah, I don’t blame you girl, oh what about this pink one!” You held the bed out to her and her tail wagged so you took that as a yes.
“Pink it is! Let’s go find you some toys” Once you had picked out quite a few toys she liked you of course picked up a pink leash to go with her bed.
You also got treats, puppy food, food bowls, and puppy pads thinking you were likely all set.
When you left the store you could hardly contain your excitement.
You made it home safely leaving the bags in the car as you wrapped her in a blanket and walked inside with her.
Jack was in the kitchen making himself something to eat when he heard the door shut.
“I’m making omelets!” He shouted over the music he was currently playing.
“Babe, can you turn that down? You’re scaring her” you stifled a giggle.
“Scaring who?” He turned the music off as he questioned you. Emerging from the kitchen with a spatula in his hands.
He immediately stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes hyper-fixated on the small puppy in your arms.
“Babe” his voice cracked. “Babe, you didn’t.”
“I did” You walked toward him, trading him the puppy for the spatula he was holding.
She started licking his hands immediately, he held her up in the air above him.
“Hi pretty baby” he spoke to her in a soft baby voice that you’d never heard before.
“Is she ours?”
“Yes,” you smiled, going to the kitchen to tend to his food before it burned. You quickly plated it and turned the stove off returning to the living room where Jack was now sitting on the floor with her.
“We have to get you a bed and some food. Yes, we do” Jack spoke to her in the same tone as he booped her nose.
“I actually got all of that, it’s in the car” you smiled before sitting down beside the two of them.
Jack's eyes were glossy and filled with emotion.
“You didn’t have to do this” he whispered as he watched his new fur baby hop around your shared apartment.
“I wanted to” You leaned your head on his shoulder as he kissed the top of your head.
You both had only looked away for a moment before you realized the puppy was out of sight.
“Pumpkin?” Jack panicked the name rolling off his tongue without thinking.
Pumpkin was chewing on a pair of fresh new balance laces in the corner of the room.
“Pumpkin huh?” You giggled as you followed Jack over to her.
“Is that okay? Do you like it? We can change it” he continued rambling only making you giggle once more.
“It’s perfect. Pumpkin is perfect.”

ATTICUS E. BÖHM, CHEMIST REVENANT 2077 → 2288
everything, everything, in its right place, in its right place. there are two colors in my head, there are two colors in my head, what, what is that you tried to say? what, what was that you tried to say? tried to say?
prior to the world's end, atticus was a PhD candidate at CIT, and was instrumental in the creation of their nuclear reactor. he got into vault 111 by lottery, as randomly selected subjects were desired for its cutting-edge cryogenic research. when the institute discovered the vault in 2227, they took great interest in him — he was once one of their own. things become convoluted here, wires crossed. as he woke up gasping, something felt amiss. different. the feeling only strengthens as he does, in his wandering. he will stop at nothing for answers.
redraws for eight year old art! many of you may know him, but to those that do not, i present the star of my rewritten fallout 4, and my nearest, dearest creation. i made him in february 2016, and he is now in 2024 also the star of his own sci-fi universe, an original story of mine. he has gotten me through so much. i'm so proud that i am still here to relay this info, and still creating at that.
Tumblr media
i still remember listening to KID A while struggling through the originals, new to digital art. makes me emotional looking back. this will always be *his* song. the rest of the album, too, now that i think of it. every song seems to connect somehow, and he would not be the same today without it.. and tons of everything everything, of course. with that i say, thanks for reading, and i would love nothing more than to reveal more of his lore in due time!

Wanted to know your thoughts on this, but for what I've reading on John it really looks to me he really got worse post Paul and post Beatles, like his saddest songs match the moment he started to have issues with Paul, he wasn't really having much contact with anyone outside Yoko, he wasn't doing much music, he wasn't being that funny either, he even died without being able to fully overcome his heroine addiction (addiction that started in the Beatles fall out right?), and idk i believe his involvement in the whole peace/art movement looked more like an escape (like some people do with religion) than actual interest.
So what you think, was John at his worst after he got out the band and cut his relationship with Paul or was it was always like that?
Hello @lord-pain
thank you for this ask! I hope I'll make sense. I think the White Album was definitely the start of John's "sad songs". Happiness is a Warm Gun, Yer Blues. Subsequently, Dig a Pony sounded so desperate to me and Because which is yeah, post India, post breakup?
There's so many different accounts during that period. Some narrators might be unreliable because you never know who these "historians/journalist/"acquaintances" have their allegiance to.
During the 70s it was said that John was miserable, became a violent drunk (who believed in astrology). He was quite unhappy with how things turned out in his life due to his choices but he was too proud to admit it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About drugs, Fred Seaman said John stopped with heroin in the last half of the 70s in this video.
Due to differing accounts that are out there, I just concentrate on John, what he wrote lyrically and how clearheaded he was during his last interview. He was trying to be better. I think that is the most important detail despite everything that went down. Also the part where he was going to work with Ringo and had booked a studio with Paul for January 1981.
His activism was partly a distraction for him. Beatle John dabbled in it, but he became very aggressive about politics after the break up. He was anti-religion when he released Imagine (1971). But went back to believing in god when he wrote "Grow Old With Me" (1979?), which I have so much thoughts about but I haven't even had the courage to voice out.
Tumblr media
While there are glimpses of John's mental anxiety visible in his song "Help!" (1965)
"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down, and I do appreciate you being 'round",
he was trying to be positive about it as seen in "Strawberry Fields Forever" (1966):
"It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, It doesn't matter much to me".
And was still holding on during the conception of "Across the Universe" (in February 1968) with his mantra:
"Nothing's gonna change my world",
which I think might've been a result of Paul's engagement in December 1967 to Jane.
Across the Universe (February 1968) > believer God (1970) > anti-religion Imagine (1971) > anti-religion (he made a satire song which I did not include here) Grow Old With Me (1979) > believer
During his alleged break from music from 1975, he was still making home demos and was writing Skywriting by Word of Mouth.
I think John and Paul being apart was just not good for them. The general opinion was that Paul left John and had moved on. (I don't believe that's true). It was John who made the decision to leave, it was this push and pull thing, and Paul continued to reach out to him (and we don't know what happened during all those times they've met up). Some accounts say that John was practically begging for a reunion but then again Paul never stopped reaching out to John (see 1976) so I personally think, regardless of all these details that are out in the open, there is still a missing piece we have not considered yet and that can only be told by Paul himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To summarize it, John probably had depression (since his teenage years) but Paul was a constant positive thing in his life that he needed and that had helped him through it, "the girl who came to stay" until something happened...
John Lennon was definitely at his worst without his buddies by his side in the 70s.

SO, WHO IS THE SONG MINE ABOUT?
A couple of years ago I read this comment on r/Taylor Swift about Taylor dating a non famous guy who attended Belmont University.
Tumblr media
I started college in Nashville in 2010, and the semester before I started, it was well known that Taylor was seeing a guy who lived on campus. It never made headlines because he wasn’t a celebrity like her other relationships. I have seen lots of random explanations for “Mine,” but many students at the university always assumed it was about this guy because the timeline fit.
At the time, I didn't think much of it. I thought that it could've been possible but still, the theory of Mine being about Cory Monteith made more sense to me.
While I was writing the Speak Now Timeline, one of the most important interviews was the Billboard one:
"Mine" was a turning point in the album’s development. It wasn’t until early 2010 when the album truly began to coalesce. Swift presented "Mine" to Borchetta in his office, just a few doors down the hall from the leather couch in the lobby. "We probably played that song four or five times," Borchetta recalls. "I’m jumping around playing air guitar, she’s singing the song back to me, and it was just one of those crazy, fun, Taylor teen-age moments." And then it got serious. "I said, ‘Keep going,’ " Borchetta says. "She kind of looked at me like, ‘You’re challenging me.’ And I said, ‘Yeah. You’ve found true north here. Keep going.’ " It was some time in the period after that challenge — between February and June — that Swift wrote “Innocent,” her response to the Kanye West incident.
That settled it then, no? Mine was written in late February, after Taylor had returned from Tokyo.
My certainties crumbled a few weeks ago, when @1989worldtour sent me an interview where Taylor says that she wrote Mine on the road, specifically in Texas.
Back To December was written in New York City, The Story Of Us was in Nashville, I wrote Mine somewhere on the road, I think in Texas, actually. (X)
Taylor was in Texas on March 10th (in Austin), March 11th (Dallas), and March 12th (Corpus Christi) for the Fearless Tour. At first, this didn't make any sense to me: Taylor had said that she wrote Mine in February! Then again, she often misremembers dates. I had shelved this date in my mind until I randomly found this comment on r/Fauxmoi while I was researching Starlight and the Kennedy craze Taylor went through.
Tumblr media
She dated a guy from Belmont I think because a family friend went there and was friends with him and was there the night they met! “By the water” in Mine is apparently about Mozarts - a coffee shop in Austin on the water where they went on a date. I have no way to verify this because it didn’t happen to me but the family friend had pics with Taylor and stuff because of this guy she was friends with who dated Taylor. This might be the only piece of celeb gossip I’ve ever known haha.
Reply: This is true! He's now married with kids and not at all famous.
The return of the Belmont guy! We have two other sources claiming that she dated a non-famous person who attended Belmont. The mention of Texas cemented the fact that there might be a kernel of truth in this theory. At this point, I took this rumor seriously and chose to investigate further. the next question was, if Belmont is in Nashville and the Mozart bar is in Texas, didn't the guy miss a lot of classes? The answer is... no. If you look at the Belmont Academic Calendar, guess when Spring Break was? From March 8th to March 15th! So even if the guy was in college, he didn't miss any classes. There's was plenty of time for him to fly to Texas, attend the show, going on a date at the Mozart bar and then fly back to Nashville.
There's another problem though: according to the Billboard interview, Taylor brought Mine to Scott Borchetta in late February. We don't actually have a direct quote from Taylor or Borchetta saying that it was February. It could be Taylor or Scott misremembering, It could be the journalist inferring (it has happened before, for example on this Rolling Stone article from 2009, where the author said that Love Story and White Horse were for the same person, for some weird reason). After all, late February and early March aren't that far away. Nathan Chapman, the producer of the song, said that they worked on Mine on and off for 4 months. They finished it on July 21st, so March 10th still tracks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, let's look at the actual bar. on the left, we have a screenshot from the Music Video, while on the right, a picture of the Mozart Bar. they look very similar to me, but I admit that I've never been to the USA, so maybe coffee shops all look the same?
Fun fact: The Mozart bar confirmed that she has been there in May 2013, after the Red Tour show.
Conclusions: Honestly, I believe those people on Reddit, but I realise that the sources are very unstable. What makes me believe it though, is the obscure mention of Mine being written in Texas, and the person on Reddit revealing that they had a date at a bar that casually is by the water. It fits perfectly. I don't have any more to say for now, but it's possible that I'll write a post of how Mine is one of the first post John Mayer song and how that relationship affected the themes of her songwriting.
P.S.: I would advise not contacting these people on Reddit. it's obvious that they're friends with him/know him and they wouldn't say anything to help identifying him. plus, it's not our place to gather information about a person that wants anonymity. it's not cool to doxx random people.

Spade… I think something is afoot with this Amazon book, but not in the way everyone else thinks.
When you go to the Amazon page for the “Tortured Poets” - Willow Bowery book (published on Feb 22nd, or the 53rd day of the year — 🎁 anon), there is this description:
Tumblr media
The 🎁 anon used the same language of what “this is” and what “this is not” in the clues. So we know what this book is NOT… it’s not the manuscript. It’s not an album or a department. It’s shared musings between an author and their audience. Got it.
Here’s where it gets interesting. While on the page for the “Tortured Poet” book, there was a sponsored ad for another poetry book: “This is a sign.” by Anon. This popped up right below the other book, as an ad, not in the “you might also like” section (so not based on search algorithm, but is a paid ad by the anon author).
Remember on February 20th (2 ✌🏼days before this Willow Bowery book was published to Amazon) when TaylorNation posted the pic of old Taylor from her Funeral in Anti-Hero with the caption “if we won the lotto, we wouldn’t tell anyone. But there would be signs.”
And everyone was all like… wtf? Seemed totally out of the blue.
(🎁 anon mentions PUBLISH and says something about looking above/for the ones the came before it)
Here is the description for This Is a Sign - Anon (published to Amazon on Dec. 20, 2023).
Book overview
“For those of us who are looking for a sign that everything will be okay, this is it.
This is a sign. is a stream of consciousness in the form of poetry and prose collected from journals and phone notes written by anon in “the pond” of her twenties, typed on a 1980s Smith Corona Typewriter, and arranged into this collection. It explores themes of home, heartache, heartbreak, and healing.”
At the Tribeca Film Festival Q&A, Taylor reveals that Typewriter in the All Too Well Short Film was an Easter Egg — it was the instrument by which the protagonist, Her, would go on to write her book.
The specific typewriter in the ATW short film was a Smith-Corona, sold under the Sears Cutlass brand.
In the author description on Amazon, it says:
“seeking to soothe souls through poetry and prose”
and provides a link to this website: anonpoetryandprose.com
So naturally, I followed the link and it takes you to a very basic webpage with a notice of the book launch, a link back to the Amazon page, and a banner that scrolls “This is a sign. -This is a sign” continuously.
The sidebar menu has only 2 options: Contact (“send me a sign”) by email, and “Postcards from Poet” for $20 with the following description: Randomly chosen poems from This is a sign. handwritten by me on a locally-sourced vintage postcard and sent to you from wherever I am ✨
Sounds like this mysterious Anon is quite the jetsetter, traveling around the world and sending postcards.
If the Willow Bowery “Tortured Poet” book is a callback to this community, and specifically to the 🎃 anon riddles, then I surmise that, with the bizzaro TN “there will be signs” ig post and the ATW short film typewriter Easter egg… perhaps our mystery author is TS herself, and this book of poetry (I’m guessing written while she recorded at Long Pond at age 29), Is a message to “us” who need reassurances that everything will be okay.
Anyway, long story short I ordered the book. And I think I might get a postcard when she starts her tour again… and see where it’s sent from.

Todays rip: 04/05/2024
FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE
Season 8 No Album Release (Read More)
Ripped by KnightOfGames (@knightofgames)
youtube
Hey everyone - remember Stuck Inside? The Five Nights at Freddy's fan song I covered back in Willievan Afton Polkka, the one pushed entirely by long-time team member KnightOfGames? Back when I first wrote that post, the meme was just beginning to take off, sitting at seven rips total by the beginning of March. We've now reached the two-month anniversary of that post - and in the time since, the amount of Stuck Inside being done has grown exponentially. Not only has the total rip count more than quadrupled - currently at 33 - but the tune has also caught on with more rippers on the team than just KnightOfGames, bringing about a huge variety of more takes on the song. Granted, today's rip is still one from the man himself, but after you've listened to FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE I highly recommend checking out all the other Stuck Inside rips if you haven't already - 12 AM - Maroon GO got a really good chuckle out of me in particular.
But yes, no matter - it's been three months since KnightOfGames first had the idea to start putting a silly fan song into his rips back in February, and it's arguably turned into the most prominent reoccurring tune to specifically debut during Season 8. And like, you'd think that would lead to a sort of overexposure to it, that one would get fed up hearing the same joke in so many places - but this deep into the channel's life, rippers have learned just how to leverage running jokes in a way that keeps them sounding fresh at every turn. Last time it was vocaloid - today, months after my post on SING A SONG ABOUT HOPES AND DREAMS, we're returning to the world of hyperpop, with one of the most cool-sounding interpretations of Stuck Inside that we've gotten yet. To be completely honest - this rip may alone have perked my interest in 100 gecs' music.
Yes, we're at one of those rips again, the kind where I'm woefully unfamiliar with the material that the rip's joke is using. But even moreso to an outsider looking in, there's a whimsy to 100 gecs' music that I just can't help but be allured by, a sound that somehow feels like a nostalgic calling to the early days of internet expression: to be loud, cringe and unashamed of being as such. FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE is in particular using the band's debut single Money Machine as a baseline, both using parts of its instrumental and tuning the original Stuck Inside vocals to that level of distortion and higher-pitch that 100 gecs is known for. It's a surprisingly natural fit (hence why I'm writing about it here) for how different you'd think the two songs are in terms of tone - but then, Stuck Inside had its chorus be sung by a rather filtered voice to begin with...perhaps this combination of tracks isn't as far-fetched as one would initially think?
In truth, I don't know if there's much I have to say beyond my absolute highest recommendation to FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE in particular - I'm just incredibly happy that Stuck Inside is continuing to see use in general. KnightOfGames' passion for the track is infectious, and it's really sweet seeing just how much its caught on with fellow SiIva viewers in the comments - despite how blatantly prevalent it was during the April Fools event in particular, I've hardly ever seen anyone complain about its overexposure the way people did with Grand Dad or Snow Halation back in Season 1. Perhaps that just speaks to how much better the rips have gotten over the years - Stuck Inside is incredibly prevalent, but each rip is made with such care and with such a distinct feel from the last to where it never feels as if the jokes are getting redundant or stalel.
Stuck Inside is just a damn good song - and through rips like FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE, its presence on SiIvaGunner is also helping me uncover my tastes in music in a rather fun way. It's not an inherently funny leitmotif nor something grounded in any sort of meme culture - it is merely a tune KnightOfGames saw tons of potential in, and has leveraged to incredible lengths in the months since. I cannot wait to see what the future of Stuck Inside looks like, but FEEL SO FINE STUCK INSIDE will do just fine in the meanwhile.

To be so lonely
TBSL is a drunk phone call with regret for how a relationship turned out. It has similarities to Say don’t go and Ready for it. Harry said (10:30) it was written in Bath. He said it was one of his favourites and a shame that people shout arrogant SOB at him. I love him so much:
youtube
Arrogant son of a bitch
Arrogant SOB is a quote from this Notebook scene. It's a vulnerable, honest line from a hopeless romantic's favourite movie. Why would people scream it at him? Only played at 12 shows.
youtube
Timeline
Harry wrote Fine Line in the first half 2018 and Cherry and Falling mid-year.
In October - January he was in Japan. The last Reputation show was in Tokyo in November. He wrote Little Freak & Ophelia then.
Taylor went back to the UK with Joe, In February she and Joe went to the Spaniards Inn (aka Harry's local) and she released Me!
To be so lonely is a drunk phone call when he is back in England around June 2019. (see also 2018-2020 and Fine line timelines
Lyrics
[Verse 1] Don't blame me for falling I was just a little boy Don’t blame the drunk caller Wasn't ready for it all
The first verse is clear that he's calling taylor:
‘Don't blame him for falling’ has a layered meaning, falling in love in the 1989 TV era (the irony now with vaults), falling off the friendship fine line (also in Daylight) and now falling into depression as in Falling.
He was just a little boy refers to his immaturity in the 1989 TV era, as detailed in Say don't go.
he responds to Taylor’s vengeful open to the Reputation tour and album: "Are you Ready for it.." with a soft gentle 'I wasn't ready at all'. This is layered, he wasn't ready to date an adult, for the fame, to be there for her insecurities in Slut and Say don’t go or to loose that love then or now.
[Pre-Chorus] You can't blame me, darling Not even a little bit, I was away And I’m just an arrogant son of a bitch Who can't admit when he's sorry
He's feeling sorry for himself, reflecting on having been emotionally numb when they dated (I was away). To Howard Stern he said every decision he’d made from 16 to 22 was as part of a group, going to therapy and working through his thoughts at that time.
the arrogant SOB line reminds us he is a gentle soul, he is sorry, he has done the work and can now see the effect he had on her. I love that line and wish people didn’t yell it.
he’s sorry, but as an arrogant sob that’s hard
[Chorus] Don't call me "baby" again, you got your reasons I know that you're tryna be friends, I know you mean it Don't call me "baby" again, it's hard for me to go home Be so lonely
Harry asked his muse to not call him baby, because he’s not with them. They are trying to be friends despite chemistry, they crossed the fine line of friendship and he’s drunk calling lonely that his beloved is not with him.
In Taylor’s later track, illicit affairs she has a similar line “And you wanna scream / Don't call me "kid" / Don't call me "baby" / Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me / You showed me colors / You know I can't see with anyone else”
He closes that it’s hard for him to be so lonely, it seems his beloved is not lonely because they are not single
[Verse 2] I just hope you see me in a little better light Do you think it's easy being of the jealous kind? ’Cause I miss the shape of your lips You’ll win, it's just a trick And this is it, so I’m sorry
He and this person have history, he wants to right. Little Freak “never saw his birthmark” is similar to me, Harry feels like Taylor did not get to see the real him, he was a little boy who wasn’t ready for it all. He regrets how things turned out and how she sees him.
He misses the shape of her lips, (red lips in style and two ghosts) in a leaked “I just wanna love you” he sang “'Cause I just wanna kiss you / And that's never gonna change / At least I'm honest with you, babe”
He’s jealous she’s with someone else, wishes they were together. He agrees it’s just a trick to get her attention, and he’s sorry.
[Bridge] And I'm just an arrogant son of a bitch Who can't admit when he's sorry [Chorus] Don't call me "baby" again, you got your reasons I know that you're tryna be friends, I know you mean it Don't call me "baby" again, it's hard for me to go home Be so lonely To be so lonely x5
:( he’s sad for how it ended, misses her
sees she wants to be friends but he can’t cope if she calls him baby because he wants her. Taylor has a similar sentiment “ Now that we don’t talk “Truth is, I can't pretend it's / Platonic, it's just ended, so”
She’s in a relationship and he wants to be with her.

Fake it
(another) singer!reader x h.s
Tumblr media
summary: to keep his clients image, Jeff suggests a PR relationship.
word count: 1225
warnings: none (apart the age gap, but everyone is over eighteen)
a/n: I wanted to try a different twist from the PR relationships I have been read recently, I don't think that there is going to be much angsty around this one, but… you never know.
Part I-Introduction
2019. february.
“It’s only going to be for a few months, a year and a half… tops, it’s going to be good for the both of you,” Jeff explained to both of his clients seated across from him.
The young woman looked at the man sitting next to her, muting whatever Jeff was explaining, it was not the first time she had been in the presence of the rockstar who had been her childhood/teenage idol, but in all other circumstances they had met to discuss her inclusion in his tour, not a PR relationship stunt.
She couldn’t even imagine what was going through his head, he looks calm, eyes fixed on Jeffrey.
“Y/n, what do you think?” Jeff questioned her, her face turned back to him, both man had their attention on her.
The young woman sighed, running a hand through her long hair trying to ignore the intense emerald green eyes on her. “I can see the benefit of this arrangement for me…but what about him?” She nodded at Harry’s direction.
She would be a fool not to see the benefits in it for her, people would look her up just because she was besides Harry, it would bust her career. The girl also new that it was a two-edged knife, she would receive an immense amount of hate, but either way her name would be at the top of the news. There was also the added bonus that a ‘relationship’ with Harry would probably shield her if rumors of her very private, very secret former ‘relationship’ ever got out, a relationship Jeff had instructed her to end for the good of her image.
“The whole world knows he and Camille ended things between them a few months ago, the thing is: most of H’s new songs are about their breakup,” Jeff looked at Harry for a moment before his eyes went back to Y/n, “it would be kind of pathetic if the album came out and he still don’t have a girlfriend to present to the world, I mean, he’s Harry Styles, British heartthrob, I can’t have him looking like a loser who can’t get over his ex.”
Ouch.
“I find it hard to believe he would have trouble getting himself a girlfriend.” She commented with raised eyebrows and slightly tilted head.
Jeff sighed, Y/n was always very inquisitive, always wanted to know every little detail of what she was getting herself into.
“We need to sell na image and we can’t risk it,” the older man said, Y/n was good at reading the between lines, they didn’t want to risk a PR stunt with someone the singer was actually in a relationship with, Harry was famously private with his relationships, and it wouldn’t work in this case, they needed the publicity, “this way it’s easier for us to control the outcome,” Jeff looked straight at her, almost ignoring Harry’s presence, “you have media training, you’re beautiful, talented, your style complements his, and we already know that the public would approve of you together.” Twitter went crazy a couple of days ago after Y/n’s ‘Who’d You’d Rather’ at Ellen, the singer gained forty thousand new followers in minutes, “This is going to be Harry’s first really public relationship, it will go against his usual MO and I mean public appearances, red carpet events, social media, to the world this is the first time he’s really been in love and he can’t hide it…he doesn’t want to hide it.”
The English singer didn’t seem too convinced. She wasn’t exactly an actress, and what Jeff was suggesting was selling a love story that didn’t exist to millions of people. She didn’t think she’d have much of a problem playing the fool in love for photos, she did it all the time in photoshoots, the problem would be when she had to start talking and lying about their nonexistent romance.
“You’re going to be Winona Ryder to Harry’s Johnny Depp.” Jeff exemplified gesturing, Y/n just arching her perfectly designed eyebrows.
“I’d prefer Kate Moss, she’s British and it suits my vibe better.” the young woman said, squinting in the manager’s direction.
Jeff smiled with satisfaction.
“Age wise, you are his Winona.” The manager joked.
Oh, yes. There was a small age gap too..
“Does that mean you agree?” It was the first time since they greeted each other that Y/n had heard Harry’s voice.
She turned toward him, for the first time their eyes meeting directly that afternoon.
“I’m young, but I’m not stupid, I know the benefits being seen in a relationship with you will bring to my career,” she said with a shrug, “and having to pretend to be your girlfriend is far from the worst job in the world.” Y/n smirked.
Being seen in a relationship would also mature her image for the type of music on her next album. The age difference between them, the fact that Harry was twenty-five and Lilly had not yet turned nineteen would be the focus of scrutiny at first, and then add to her appeal.
“Are we all in agreement?” Lilly turned her attention to Jeff, nodding, Harry must have agreed too, for their manager clapped his hands together with a smile, “Perfect, now, this stunt will stay between us, no one else can know, and there will be no paper trail, absolute secrecy, not even your families can know,” he said looking at the two, “to the world, I introduced the two of you during a dinner in NYC, and the rest is history.”
“If we’re going to be open about this relationship, talk about it in public, we need details, we can’t seem like something fabricated.” Y/n commented, running her hand over her hair in a nervous gesture.
“H and you can talk about it, I am leaving for the two of you to figure it out a narrative, it will be nice if you get to know each other better, you will spend a lot of time in each other presence.” Jeff looked at the two, Y/n turning her attention to the man beside her.
Harry didn’t seem to have much to say about everything, either that or he was extremely shy, which in a way she doubted from the years she’d followed his career. Jeff went on to explain that their first ‘public sighting’ would be the trip to Rome for the Met Gala fitting with Gucci in early March, as both are being dressed by Alessandro Michele. From then on, some small rumors, and comments from 'sources close to the couple' would be planted to spread the narrative to sell the couple. Jeff commented that it would be interesting if they started making some discreet outings around LA, being seen out with friends of both sides, maybe Harry driving Y/n to places
They exchanged private phone numbers and e-mail contact, the young woman also got Harry’s assistant number in case she couldn’t reach him on his own phone. Y/n said goodbye to the two men after a while of talking the finer details, having to leave in a hurry so as not to be late for the studio session with Mark.
She hadn't even made it to the elevator when she felt her cell phone vibrate in her back pocket with a notification.
Jeff had added her to a group message with him and Harry.
Y/n had a feeling that things were about to change drastically in her life. Whether it would be a positive change or not, she still didn't know.

Ahead of new album, The Show, Niall Horan on how he 'lives' for touring, his desire to connect with fans through his songs, and the challenge of going out for chips in his Irish hometown
It’s almost a cliché to call Niall Horan a “super-nice guy”, but really, there’s no getting away from it. He may have named his new album The Show, but Horan feels no need to put one on for a journalist. In fact, the Irish singer-songwriter is so laid-back and likeable when we meet at a smart London hotel – fresh flowers everywhere, bottled water waiting on the table – that I ask how he’s stayed so well-adjusted. “It’s probably a combination of the upbringing I had and the fact I already had enough character at 16 [to deal with it],” he says. “It might have been a different story if I’d started doing this when I was 10.”
Now 29, he has been scarily famous for almost half his life. After auditioning for The X Factor in 2010 as a solo artist, 16-year-old Horan was eliminated at the boot camp stage, then given a spectacular second chance as one fifth of a hastily assembled group called One Direction. He and his new bandmates – Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – didn’t win that year’s show, but still used it as a springboard to become a chart-topping global phenomenon. By the time One Direction announced an indefinite hiatus in January 2016, they had sold 70 million records and debuted at number one in the US with their first four albums – something not even The Beatles achieved. When asked what he would say to his pre-1D, 16-year-old self, Horan replies: “Get ready. Your life’s about to change on a level that most of the world can’t even quantify.”
Horan says he still speaks to “the lads” on a regular basis, but like all of them, he has worked hard to carve out an identity as a solo artist. If Horan’s individual achievements still feel slightly underrated, that’s probably only because his flashier bandmate Styles is now a stadium-filling superstar. Released in 2017, Horan’s debut album Flicker was a deft blend of soft rock, folk and country that debuted at number one in the US and Ireland. His 2020 follow-up Heartbreak Weather added a dash of swagger to the mix – particularly on the Brit-poppy single ‘Nice to Meet Ya’ – and became his first UK chart-topper. Because it dropped in March 2020, just as Covid-19 was taking hold, Horan never got to take the album on the road. “I haven’t toured since 2018 – that’s wild,” he says. “I love live music and I love touring – I live for it. So, it’s sad that I haven’t done that.”
Happily, a few weeks after this interview, Horan announced The Show: Live on Tour, a 50-date trek across Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand that will keep him busy from February to July of next year. When Horan last toured five years ago, he mainly played large theatres, but now he is aiming to pack out arenas from Birmingham to Brisbane. During our conversation, he hinted that he was ready for the step up. “In my eyes, the bigger the venue, the better, because I fucking love looking out at an ocean of people,” he says. “For me, it feels like the bigger the venue, the better the show is gonna be.”
Horan also makes no bones about wanting The Show to become another UK number one after it drops on 9 June. “There’s nothing better than getting that little statue sent to your house,” he says with an impish grin. At the time of writing, he seems well on course for another express delivery from the Official Charts Company. The album’s breezy lead single ‘Heaven’ cracked the UK Top 20 in February, and its sprightly follow-up ‘Meltdown’ is now climbing the charts. A few hours before this interview, I watch him perform both songs in the Radio 1 Live Lounge. Horan is just as relaxed with his band during rehearsals, but when he spots that his vocals are getting buried in the mix, he quickly and calmly gets it corrected.
Horan began working on ‘The Show’ while holed up at home during the summer of 2020. The album title had come to him earlier in the year, but he “didn’t really know what it meant until the pandemic”. When he sat down at the piano that August, the lyrics that came out seemed to capture the confusion of the Covid era: “If everything was easy, nothing ever broke / If everything was simple, how would we know? / How to fix your tears? How to fake a show?” At this point, Horan says he realised ‘The Show’ was both “a metaphor for life” and an overarching concept he could run with. “When there’s no heartbreak [to write about], you have to come up with a different concept,” he says. “I realised quite quickly that what I wanted to talk about was the ups and downs and good and bad of life. That’s ‘The Show’.”
Having “no heartbreak” is about as much as Horan will say about his personal life. “Keeping that stuff quiet”, he believes, is one reason he remains so grounded. Since 2020, he has been dating Amelia Woolley, a designer shoe buyer who never appears on his work-focused Instagram. But when we discuss ‘You Could Start a Cult’, an idiosyncratic folk ballad from the album, Horan does offer a teasing glimpse into their home life. He says the song’s eye-catching title was inspired by the true-crime series they like watching. “I always try and write weird stuff like that, then see if I can flip it on its head and make the song [itself] not as dark as the title,” he says. In this case, Horan flipped it into a “love song, effectively”, albeit an intense one. “It’s about… not the desperation feeling, but the ‘I think you’re the best fucking thing in the world’ feeling,” he explains. “And if you started a cult, I’d follow you into the fire. You know, that kind of angst, though I don’t know if ‘angst’ is the word I’m looking for!”
Horan spends a lot of time in LA because his record label and producers are based there. His main collaborators on The Show were Joel Little, who he brought in because he liked his work with Taylor Swift, indie artist Noah Kahan, and long-time co-writer John Ryan, a veteran of four One Direction albums. “I think it’s really important first of all to be loyal,” he says of his enduring partnership with Ryan. “And you know, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Still, working with Little felt just as comfortable, partly because they could pick things up at a moment’s notice. “If I get the green light at the top of my street [in LA], I can be at Joel’s house in less than a minute,” Horan says. “It’s a fucking dream!”
But during the pandemic, Horan was grounded at his main base in southwest London. “I’ve never been fitter in my life because I was cycling 80 or 90 miles around Richmond Park every week – it’s gorgeous out there,” he recalls. Like many of us, Horan has conflicting feelings about the way Covid placed our lives on hold. “I don’t want to say I enjoyed it because I didn’t – it was such a horrible time,” he says. “But I got to a point about two or three months in, where I was like: ‘This is the longest I’ve ever had off.’ He particularly appreciated having to stay in one place for a sustained period of time. “Normally, I’m packing a suitcase every three or four days,” he says. “At Heathrow Airport, the guards at the [security] desk just laugh when they see me coming. They’re like, ‘How do you do this?’”
Having lived in London since he was 16, Horan says “it’s definitely the best city on the planet”. But at the same time, he still regards Mullingar, the Irish market town where he was born and raised, as home. His debut solo single ‘This Town’, a UK top 10 hit in 2016, was incredibly charming because it harnessed his ineffable longing for the place. Horan reckons he returns to Mullingar “seven or eight times a year”, although walking down the high street is pretty tricky. “I can’t just pull up outside the chip shop, run in and get the chips, then run back to the car,” he says. “Everything has to be thought through. Like, where am I going to park? How many streets am I going to have to cross? What am I going to wear?” Horan says all this with no hint of frustration: by now, he knows what is expected of a homecoming hero.
Horan knew he wanted to be a musician from a young age and says he “tried to make this as clear as possible” to his parents. They were “supportive up to a point”, but because the family didn’t have much money and Mullingar wasn’t a creative hub like Dublin, his mother urged him to “get some sort of qualification”. “I still don’t have any,” Horan says with a laugh, “I didn’t do GCSEs or anything like that because I didn’t finish school.” At 16, Horan made the 50-mile journey to Dublin to audition for The X Factor and grabbed hold of the One Direction rocket with both hands.
Did his parents come up with any ideas for a Plan B? “We didn’t get that far. Honestly, I just packed my bag and never came back – that’s the way they look at it,” says Horan. “My father worked in Tesco for 35 years and my mother worked at a pewter genesis company making little bits and pieces – clocks and things like that. They both had very regular jobs.” Horan notes astutely that some kids from a working-class background “like to spread their wings and leave the nest” – as he did, quite spectacularly – whereas others “like to stay in their hometown, or maybe can’t get out”. Horan pauses for a second, perhaps to ponder what might have been. “I don’t know what they would have wanted me to do, but I’m sure it would have been a good life,” he continues. “Like, my parents are having a good time.”
Thirteen years after he left to become a pop star, Horan’s own ambition remains undimmed. “I’ve achieved a lot in my young life, but I’m still fired up to do as much as I can,” he says. “My career has felt so good because it reminds me of everything I thought the music industry would be when I was a kid. I got the good end of the stick [in terms of] travelling the world and playing to millions. And I still want more of that.”
For this reason, the audience is always at the forefront of his mind. “When I’m writing, I ask myself, ‘Have I gone too specific to the point where it only makes sense to me?’” he says. “And then I try and broaden the thought to make it as relatable as possible.” ‘Never Grow Up’ from Horan’s new album was partly inspired by his girlfriend’s parents, who are “still madly in love”, but its lyrics will chime with One Direction fans who, like him, are close to turning 30. “Hope we still drink like we’re back in the pub,” Horan sings. “Hope we grow old, but we never grow up.”
In Horan’s eyes, the songs that fully stand the test of time – from Simon and Garfunkel to Whitney Houston and Adele – are “the ones that really mean a lot to the people”. It’s this kind of universal connection that he is always striving for. “These are the things that go on in my head when I’m writing,” he says. “I don’t want to alienate anyone, and I don’t want to be introspective to the point where I ruin it for everyone. So, if they can connect to it too, then we all get what we want out of this.”

Mikey Way talks bass heroes, 'Bowie moments' and his signature Squier
By Matthew Parker published February 27, 2013
My Chemical Romance's bassman interviewed
Full interview under the cut:
BASS EXPO 2013: My Chemical Romance are a band that have polarised opinions, angered newspapers, formed an army of extremely loyal fans the world over and managed to keep their heads in the process. But despite their formidable live reputation, their musicianship is often overlooked in favour of whatever controversy the press has decided to attribute to the band that month.
In attempt to rectify this, we spoke to bassist Mikey Way and picked his brains about his early influences, his gear preferences and the development of his signature Squier Mustang bass.
What's your very first memory of the bass guitar?
"My very first memory of the bass guitar - I was about three years old and heard Another One Bites The Dust by Queen on the radio. It was burned into my skull from that moment on, and became a benchmark for bass lines in my mind."
Do you remember the first time you made a breakthrough with your bass playing - the first time you thought 'This is for me'?
"My first breakthrough with bass playing was during one of the first MCR practices in December of 2001. Gerard [Way, frontman] and Ray Toro [lead guitar] both coached me, as I hadn't had a great deal of bass experience up to that point. When I got the picking pattern/timing for [early MCR track] Our Lady of Sorrows down, I had a total 'wow' moment and knew not only did I love it, but I would play the bass forever."
What, for you, is the key to be being a good bass player?
"In my opinion, the key to being a good bass player is rhythm and timing. Bass is what the drummer plays from mostly and everybody goes off the drummers beat."
What MCR song has presented the biggest challenge for you as a bass player and why?
"I would say the song that presented the biggest challenge for me was Planetary (Go!) [from MCR's fourth album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys]. That song takes a great deal of dexterity to play live, and in turn has made me a better player."
MCR has, for better or worse, had a variety of drummers in its 10 year + history. What impact has that had on your role in the band's rhythm section?
"I can honestly say it benefited me greatly. I've played with five drummers in MCR, either onstage or in the studio and jammed with countless others. They each had different styles and nuances, so I was able to learn a lot from each of them."
Gerard has spoken before about 'Bowie moments' - the 'pinch yourself' experiences the band occasionally gets to enjoy. What have been your favourite Bowie moments with MCR?
"I have been very fortunate to have had many of those moments in our career thus far. Some highlight 'Bowie/pinch me moments' being -the reveal of The Black Parade in London back in '06, headlining Reading and Leeds in 2012, being the first American band in 30 something years to play Vietnam, and being the last band to play in Time Square before the ball dropped."
Have you ever met any of your bass playing heroes? Who's inspiring you currently?
"I've been able to meet many of my bass heroes through the years luckily! Matt Sharp's bass playing on the first two Weezer albums never fails to inspire me."
Do you have a favourite bass line of all time? What is it and why?
"Oh wow, this is a toughie! It's so hard to pick just one, but any of Louis Johnson's bass lines on Michael Jackson's Thriller album take the cake. They are still stuck in my head to this day, after hearing them almost 30 years ago. They are powerful and infectious."
What do you look for when you're buying a bass?
"When I'm buying a bass I look for equal parts sound, playability and vibe. Not only do I want it to sound and play amazing, but its an added bonus when it has interesting "battle damage" or an interesting color pattern that I've never seen before."
You recently released a signature Squier Mustang bass. How did that come about? How does it feel to have your name on a guitar?
"Before, we were discussing 'pinch yourself' moments, and getting my own signature Squier Mustang bass is on that list. I had been sponsored by Fender through most of my time in MCR. I had contacted them about making a custom bass and they hit me back saying they wanted to give me a signature model! To me, this is one of my greatest accomplishments.
"I started playing electric guitar at 14/15, and it was a Fender Stratocaster. My first bass was a Squier P Bass and I haven't used anything but Fender onstage ever since. To say its a tremendous honour and privilege would be an understatement. At least once a day I think about it, and it makes me smile ear to ear."
What is it about the Mustang bass that draws you to that model? What features were you keen to incorporate?
I was drawn to the Mustang because, simply put, they are a hell of a lot of fun to play - especially in a live setting [and] I've always really wanted a Mustang, with a humbucker, and a competition stripe (it's classic and classy!). I've always been in love with flake/sparkle finishes as well; so if you stir all of that up in one - you have my signature model."
What other bass gear do you use? (Amps, pedals etc.) And why?
"As far as other bass equipment - I use the Fender Super Bass Man. From the minute I took it out of the box I was in love, and won't use anything else. Not only does it sound HUGE, but the range of sounds and tones you can get is uncanny. Highly recommended.
"As far as pedals go, I always love the Memory Man and Bass Big Muff/regular Big Muff from Electro-Harmonix. I've been using a Big Muff for distortion since I started playing the electric guitar and swear by it."
Do you use your signature bass on stage?
"Yes, I absolutely do. It's my weapon of choice, badge of honor, and good luck charm all rolled into one."

Today's compilation:
Now That's What I Call Music! 8 2001 R&B / Pop / Teen Pop / Alternative Rock / Pop-Punk / Post-Grunge
Welp, folks, it looks like we're nearing the end of the earliest days for this beloved flagship series that's known for constantly delivering reproductions of the day's biggest pop hits, but I still have a couple more of these albums in my queue to enjoyably sift through. And just like the other seven installments that precede this one, Now That's What I Call Music! 8 also makes for a pretty great trip down commercial radio memory lane as well 😍.
But before we dive right on into it, how about we have some nostalgic fun with the ad for this release first? See, If you had placed an order for Now 8 by credit card or with check-debit, you'd also receive a free limited edition collector's box that you could store all of your other Now CDs in too! Wow! How considerate! Thanks Now! 😎💖
youtube
But we actually start off on a few somber notes here... 😔
Now 8 was the first dispatch from the main series to be released after 9/11, and so, I feel like the inclusion of its final track, U2's "Walk On," which never even made it onto Billboard's Hot 100 chart, was done solely in order to try to console an American psyche that had been deeply wounded at that time. "Walk On" was released as a single in February of 2001, and was actually about the plight of Burmese peace activist Aung San Suu Kyi—who, years later, would despicably do nothing as Myanmar's head of state to address the genocide of Rohingya Muslims that her own military was perpetrating—but in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the song found itself resonating with a lot of Americans, serving a sudden and newfound purpose as an anthem of perseverance for them.
And that's pretty much undoubtedly why Now chose this song to close out the album. Had 9/11 not happened, this comp's last track would've probably been a song that had actually charted on the Hot 100. But because this album was slated to release in November of '01, the Now brass probably thought it best to end with a song that could acknowledge that then-current moment of anguish and turmoil, rather than awkwardly and tone-deafly just loading up their CD with fun pop hits from the summer that had just passed.
But less than three weeks before 9/11, R&B star Aaliyah had also tragically passed in a plane crash after filming the video for her beautifully soft and sensual, final single, "Rock the Boat" too. So Now not only included that song on this release, but they dedicated the whole album to Aaliyah's memory, and also donated part of the proceeds from the triple-platinum seller to her memorial fund as well.
And last with the sadness, rest in peace to the great Steve Harwell. I absolutely despised your band's cover of The Monkees' "I'm a Believer" when I first heard it (which appears on this album), but I still genuinely dug your work more than most are willing to admit, and really also loved the critique you had about the commodification of social movements in "Walkin' On the Sun," which is something that many people probably overlooked because they had nothing nice to say about your band that, unfortunately, became a Shrek meme. At the end of the day, Smash Mouth made a bunch of fun music, man 😞.
OK, on to the rest of this album...
So, the album cover for this release says it comes with 20 chart-topping hits, but in reality, only three of these were actually Hot 100 #1s. There's Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious," which, to go with their Survivor album's theme, intended to use the opening guitar stutter from "Eye of the Tiger"—by the band *Survivor*—but had to settle for Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" instead; Usher's "U Got It Bad" ballad; and Joe's "Stutter," which isn't actually the most famous version of the song, but is the "Double Take Remix" instead, that was done by Allen "Allstar" Gordon Jr., and sampled both the iconic west coast alternative rap classic, "Passin' Me By," by The Pharcyde, as well as the song that that song itself sampled, Quincy Jones' "Summer in the City." And it also features now-canceled rapper Mystikal, which represents his third overall appearance in this series.
And speaking of remixes and samples, the famous Murder Inc. remix of J.Lo's "I'm Real," featuring Ja Rule, doesn't appear on here, but instead, it's her underappreciated and poppier original version that sounds nothing like the remix, and samples from classic Japanese electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra's digi-chirping "Firecracker," which ends up naturally giving the tune a sweet 80s throwback kinda vibe.
Other songs worth mentioning are the brilliantly produced and super light and smooth Janet Jackson jam, "Someone to Call My Lover," which sampled from folk duo America's "Ventura Highway;" and a terrific tune that was actually originally released in 1998, but rose to US fame because of its inclusion in a 2001 Mitsubishi ad: "Start the Commotion," by UK duo The Wiseguys. That one's very much in that Fatboy Slim-helmed UK big beat vein; gotta love the blaring and swingin' sampled horns on it! 🤩
And there's a solid handful of other songs on this CD that I could devote some space to as well, but I think this post here is already long enough as it is.
So, another terrific nostalgia rush to be had in this trip all the way back to 2001. And I only have one more of these Now comps left in my queue, but I think I'm gonna save it for later.

Ronance Femslash February - sharing headphones
Thank you to the kind anon who sent the prompt “sharing headphones”! I went back and forth with this one for a while, because as far as I know* easily-shareable headphones weren’t really commonplace in the 80s, so I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do a modern AU with, like, earbuds, or find something period-appropriate that would be sort of comparable. I hope what I settled on still gets at the spirit of your prompt!
I’m accepting Ronance prompts all month for Femslash February. I have a few more prompts in my inbox, but I still need a few more to get me through the end of the month, so please send them my way! Anon asks are totally fine, and you’re welcome to send more than one prompt. Don’t be shy! You can find previous prompts I’ve filled here.
There’s a tap on the glass of the listening booth, and Robin looks up to see Nancy standing there, the hand that isn’t weighed down by shopping bags raised in a shy wave.
Robin pauses the tape and opens the door. “Everybody ready to go?”
Nancy shakes her head, and Robin notices there are melted snowflakes in her hair, bright as little jewels. “Steve took the kids to get hot chocolate, so you’ve got time. Shopping for someone in particular?”
“Not really,” Robin admits. “I started out trying to find something for Steve—y’know, expand his horizons a little, but I wound up looking for myself.”
“Find anything good?”
Robin shrugs, oddly self-conscious. She’s seen Nancy’s tape collection, and she isn’t sure the album she’s listening to is exactly what Nancy Wheeler would call good. But Nancy just keeps looking at her, expectant, and Robin says, “Did you want to . . . ?”
“Sure,” Nancy says quickly, and the next moment, Nancy and all her shopping bags are crowded into the tiny booth with Robin. They’re standing so close Robin can smell the cold on her clothes. There’s a floral note underneath the scent of snow, soft despite the chill.
Robin puts the album on again, and the high, clear sound of a woman’s voice fills the cramped space between them, accompanied by sweet, echoing guitars. It reminds Robin of watching snow fall, swirls of white nearly indistinguishable from the wide grey sky. It’s chilly, but there’s also an almost carnival joy to the spiraling vocals. It makes Robin want to close her eyes and drift, to be swept away.
Instead, she’s watching Nancy’s reaction. Her cheeks are flushed—from the cold outside, or the tight press of the booth, Robin can’t tell—and her brows are drawn together. “I can’t understand what she’s saying.”
Robin worries her bottom lip between her teeth, considering. “I don’t think you’re supposed to? It’s—”
“—like a dream,” Nancy finishes.
It wasn’t what Robin had been about to say, but it’s exactly right. “Yeah.” A beautiful dream, after the nightmare they’ve all endured over the past few years, otherworldly in a way that fills her with exaltation instead of dread. The singer’s voice swoops even higher above sparkling distortion, and Robin feels it break over her skin like a shiver.
Nancy must notice, because her eyes flick over Robin’s face, searching. Nancy’s eyes are so blue, Robin thinks, the color of ice melt, or the sky on a day when a cold wind’s swept the clouds away. They’re not alone, the record store crowded with holiday shoppers just beyond the glass at their backs, but for a moment it feels like they’re the only two people in the whole, wide world.
“We can go,” Robin offers, though she doesn’t really want to leave. “If you want. Steve’s probably—”
“Not yet,” Nancy says quietly, and one of her hands closes around Robin’s, squeezing tight. “Just a little longer.”

i was tagged by @wormdream to shuffle my music and share the first ten songs that appear. i am doing this from my computer which has some stuff that i don't listen to anymore on it and also has a bunch of live bootlegs and b-side/compilation/unofficial stuff that i'll probably skip for this. thank you, anyways! <3
everything that could have been - kittie. from the album funeral for yesterday. i think there's too much repetition in this song at the end. could have been either condensed down or added some more words to it. i am excited for the new kittie album though!
put your hand inside the puppet head - they might be giants. from their album they might be giants. i love the music video for this song.
a man alone - aaron freeman. i did say i was going to skip the unofficial stuff, but this stopped me in my tracks. i only went through aaron's music once and should totally revisit it again. i have two versions of this on my computer, one is thirty seconds longer than the other. i got the shorter one. very sweet, very somber.
gioco d'azzardo - paolo conte. from his album appunti di viaggio. the instrumentals are great in this. conte is just really good at writing music. i still haven't heard all of his albums though.
paloma - tall juan. my beloved tall juan!!! i got into him in high school whilst looking for free stuff on bandcamp. he is also friends with mac demarco who i used to listen to all the time. i think it's funny how the lesser known artist that i found out about through a bigger artist stuck with me and the larger artist didn't. i was so happy to have seen him in february. he was so nice and very funny.
town to town - hello the band. one of flansburgh's side projects. it's a good song. i think it's interesting to see what they make without the other john.
mad (feat. lil wayne) - solange. from a seat at the table. i haven't listened to this album in a long time. i listened to this a lot in high school. her voice is sooooo beautiful! this is still the only album i have heard by her. i should take the time to listen to her other albums some day. ALSO she had the best song in yo gabba gabba.
the last song - sleater-kinney. from their self titled album. i am still on the fence about them. this is the only album i heard from them, i found it at a thrift store. maybe i'll enjoy their other albums more or maybe i just need to listen to this one more. sometimes whenever i finally listen to an album by a band that is influential within a specific scene, i get the opinion of this is something i would have liked more when i was an angsty teenager and was being introduced to punk with the more well known stuff. like i am at a place where i don't need the introductory stuff, i already have bands that are deeper into that genre that i can jam out to. does that make any sense? they're not bad like listening to ramones or some shit. like why would you waste your time with ramones or sex pistols or some other shitty popular punk band? sleater-kinney i can appreciate and would have loved as a kid when i needed more female fronted bands that were really cool and were more of my style. kittie is another example of this. i do love kittie a lot, but i wish i knew about them before as a kid. we should revisit this topic later.
tender situation - ween. from the album pure guava. ween is another band where i wish i got into when i was a kid. same with tmbg. i think i would have had the opinion that their early stuff was better unfortunately, however, they would have been perfect for fourteen year old me. i could have been burning their stuff onto cds for friends and making them listen to it like i did with daniel johnston. i love ween. i got into them after listening to most of the flaming lips' albums and was so disappointed by their stuff and ween ended up being exactly how i was hoping the flaming lips would sound.
(system)control - bleed the pigs. from the mortis fatum ep. FANTASTIC BAND! exactly what i needed after listening to so much boring indie rock. i neeeeeed to listen to more bands like them. the mixing is exactly what i like with the vocals not being too high up which i find is a problem in a lot of metal and punk and just rock in general. everything about them is just perfect!
well...i won't tag anyone for this. the commentary wasn't even part of the tag game, i just like to talk about music.
