Why can't FFN.Net have a site wide Dark Mode instead of just on the fanfics?? Why can't AO3 have a Dark Mode without the need of an account to even enable a Dark Mode skin?? Dark Mode should be accessible by default and for free to everyone without the need of an account and/or third-party extension for everyone. That is especially true for those with eye problems, light sensitivity, and what have you.

i've been thinking about this post
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ever since i came across it because it bugs me so much ghjdfgd so many of the extensions listed there are redundant, either because they do each other's job or their functions have been implemented natively in firefox + the less extensions, the better! it's less surface area available for "attack"
i recommend the electronic frontier foundation's cover your tracks tool to check how well you're protected against web trackers (as for fingerprinting, i know brave combats canvas fingerprinting via filter lists - like firefox - and by randomizing a user's fingerprint, but it's a chromium browser. canvas blockers tend to impact usability. for day-to-day use you might just want to reduce data available to fingerprints, because to avoid that altogether i'm afraid you're better off using tor)
i'm going through the list above after the read more; i'm no expert, i've just spent a lot of my free time looking into how to improve my privacy and security habits and this is what my brain retained + don't believe me because i say so + feel free to point out any mistakes of mine.
🟩 keep
ublock origin. filter lists you should consider adding:
check Privacy > AdGuard URL Tracking Protection
add Actually Legitimate URL Shortener Tool (explained how here)
check out the arkenfox project's github page too!
🟨 optional
sponsorblock (1) & unhook (2) for yt. i personally don't use either because (1) i'm good with the good old dragging the current time indicator past sponsorship sections and (2) i'm also good at ignoring page elements i don't care about, but that's me obvs.
facebook container (& not listed above but multi-account containers too; differences between the two: x, x): total cookie protection (enabled by setting firefox's privacy protection to "strict") already partitions third parties, but these extensions could provide a further layer of isolation. container tabs + "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" + "Manage Exceptions" is excellent cookie management with no other extensions necessary
🟥 don't bother
total cookie protection makes ghostery, privacy badger & privacy possum redundant
you've got ublock origin so adblocker ultimate, ad nauseam & adblocker for youtube are also redundant. if you still see yt ads, remove all custom filters related to youtube on ublock origin and force update your lists
https-only mode has been introduced to all the main browsers so https everywhere is also redundant
trackmenot. it's unverified and indeed i've never seen it recommended in any of the multiple firefox hardening videos and guides i've checked, it's kinda useless unless you're a regular google or bing user. prefer a privacy-focused search engine instead
(e.g. duckduckgo [advanced search tricks here and here] which cleans up bing results and has a lite version too! i've also seen startpage [which cleans up google results] recommended but it's had some controversies. for further info, i recommend checking this)
duckduckgo privacy essentials. i suppose (but i can't be sure) this was installed because when you try to add a search engine in firefox's settings you're redirected to the addons page WHICH IS STUPID OF THEM because you can add them via search bar (i did this with e.g. letterboxd)
don't track me google. for those random google searches you still might need, if you added all the filter lists above to ublock origin you should be fine, and if you aren't you're better off using skip redirect
jury's out on blue blocker because it's unverified. i'm not a twitter user either so i haven't checked it out

on the one hand it's annoying that even using multiple third party addons there is still no way to consistently stop tumblr from sliding an envelope under my door with the accumulated neuroses of everyone who has ever looked at my posts, but on the other hand I got to see this incredible meltdown in response to a post saying it sucks when people are incurious about the world:

Can you tell us about all the stations in SBURB's Phernalia Registry? Including those that we have already seen and those that you may have entered with subsequent updates. I need this to figure out everything.
In no particular order:
Cruxtruder: Produces cruxite dowels, starts the entry countdown, also holds the kernelsprite. Technically speaking the best thing if you want something contained.
Totem Lathe: Carves dovels by punchcard entry. The whole punchcard system is my thing, so that is staying, period.
Punch Designix: Apparently carving punchcard by hand is not a common skill, so this punches cards for you based on the captcha of another card.
Alchemiter: Materializes an iem based on carved cruxite dowel AKA totem. Yes, technically we could have skipped th whole totem thing by shoving cards into it straight away, but the game started crashing when we combined more than two cards, so the punch card system is capable to add and also equalize up to 4 cards. Powers of two do a lot.
Holopad: Alchemizer preview. Overusing it causes lags, because the game has to remmeber all alchemized and previewed things.
Jumper Block Extension: Attached to Alchemiter. By inserting Punch Card Shunt this can "Alchemize" the Alchemiter - ranging from resource discounts and mark-ups to automaticlaly adding tags, skipping or adding creation steps, even working with multiple totems together.
Land Block Extension: Attached to CruxtruderBy inserting a Punch Card Shunt this can "Alchemize" your Land or Underlings or also some of that Cruxtruder's Player powers.
Punch Card Shunt: You put in a punched card, plug that in JBE or LBE, then magic happens.
Intellibeam Laserstation: For reading unreadable and/or corrupted captcha codes.
Gristalizing Torrbulence: Originally third-party addon which we polished up, made it less CTD and now everyone can have grist communism for the low price of playing the game.
Grist Rig: Siphons both acquired and unacquired grist into Skaia's Core. Once the Core is full, it just grabs the grist for you, so you don't have to pick everything up by yourself.
Ectobiology Apparatus: The rig for ectobiology, duh.
Cloning Pad: Ectobiology Apparatus, but sized for frogs.
Underworld Cascader: Once you venture into the Underworld and start killing the Angels, this is where their distilled energies are stored for the focused fire you are going to need later on to split the Lands open

more infodumping because i don't have anyone to talk to about this: there's a guy who makes gmod maps who is unbelievably talented and it's a shame he might be an insane weirdo. i think i'm going to start posting some of his work regardless. anyway that's not really related
one of his recent maps has some esoteric shit in it (as they usually do) and for whatever reason- possibly intentionally- i can't do my usual snooping to figure out what's going on. jazztronauts crashes trying to open it ('Client 0 overflowed reliable channel'; i've seen it before). so i'm like okay, whatever, i'll use third party utility #1 to extract the files from the addon and then use third party utility #2 to decompile the map and then use utility #3 to open the vmf. except hammer crashes opening the vmf due to 'unterminated string or string too long'. and actually, now that i've done this, i'm guessing those two things are related. because i'm fairly sure jazztronauts does all of its crazy shit by decompiling the map with bspsrc while you're loading. so if bspsrc produces something unopenable, jazztronauts can't work with it
however, hammer is kind enough to tell you what line of the file the error is on. i did not realize vmfs are human-readable text:
Tumblr media
this makes certain things make a lot more sense. there's a long-standing bug in hammer where if you use a quotation mark anywhere in an entity text field, you will no longer be able to open the vmf. and now i know why, i guess. although it's wild they haven't done anything to escape quotation mark characters in the last, uh, 25 years. in theory, people could do this intentionally when they're ready to compile in order to thwart decompiling/jazztronauts, and i'm wondering if other maps i've played have done that.
though there are probably other, better methods because uh. i have a robust text editor and can just go fix each line it complains about until it works. in this particular case there were line breaks in the strings that it was freaking out about.
Tumblr media
anyway after all that the extent of the secret is that if you turn all the valves it displays map credits onscreen.

Do you use many third party add-ons? Any you swear by?
wiggle bones my beloved, they're a bit janky in newer versions but they're absolutely amazing for animating tails n shit
I think the only other external addon I use is render music to set the completion sound to so long gay bowser (legitimately useful)

I’ve been struggling, do you know how to get the post trimmer thing on safari
i'm not an apple user so i may be wrong but afaik apple doesn't allow third party addons on their browser. if there's any way to install extensions like xkit rewritten to safari, i'm not aware of it.

So anyway by terminating the contract between Sony and Nintendo to create the SNES CD addon "Playstation" Nintendo accidentally created what would become their biggest challenger of the next console generation. People remember the N64 very fondly and for very good reason but the reality of the console was that it only ever got under 300 game releases and never sold very well due to a lot of poor decisions by Nintendo including the choice to use inferior cartridges instead of discs to keep the price point and load times low. The N64 was a very capable system but the fact of the matter was that you just couldn't fit much onto cart when compared to a disc and third party developers knew this. This let to Sony essentially poaching most of the big 3rd party releases for that generation. Prime example: Final Fantasy 7 which just could not have fit/ran on the N64. Sony also had a very open door policy about who was able to approach them and pitch games to be published on their platform. But perhaps the greatest decision of that generation (at least in the realm of picking up dev studios) was their contracting of Insomniac Games to create a competitor for Mario 64 on the PlayStation. This ended up being Spyro the Dragon and not only did the game sell phenomenally well it went over SO well that it got TWO sequels within TWO years of it coming out. Now while that's insane and no dev team should ever have to do that Insomniac was responsible for some very cool achievements that led to other games on the PlayStation existing at all. One such case was that they happened to share an office space with Naughty Dog at the time they were developing Crash Bandicoot and ended up sharing some of the techniques and technology they came up with to make Spyro look so good. This ended up directly encouraging Naughty Dog to use the tech in Crash which led to it probably being one of the best looking PS1 games of it's time. Thank you for coming to my talk please don't tug at the restraints I don't have any replacements. Next we're going to go over how the Neo Geo pocket color is one of the most underappreciated and tragic handhelds of all time and-

Favorite iOS Safari Extensions
On iOS (iPhones and iPads), Safari is the undisputed leader of the browsers, primarily because Apple puts very tight restrictions on other browser apps that makes it very difficult for them to offer the same features that Safari does.
Thankfully, you can install extensions to tweak Safari's behavior and customize websites, as long as your device is running iOS 15 or higher. Here are the Safari Extensions I use on a daily basis. Most are free (or at least have a free version), and all work on both iPhones and iPads.
For desktop computers, you can also check out my recommendations for Firefox addons)
Last updated Jan 2024 (added UnTrap and Vinegar)
Index:
AdGuard
Noir
uBlacklist
Userscripts
Sink It for Reddit
UnTrap
Vinegar
AdGuard
This addon is free if you just want to use the built in adblocking lists. For a small yearly fee, you can pay for "Pro" features, which allows you to add any custom adblocking list to the app, as well as providing a local VPN that can block ads and trackers inside any app on your phone. I use the Safari adblocking lists 24/7 because they are so helpful, but the VPN can drain your battery faster than normal, so I only turn that on when I am using an app with a lot of ads, like Apple News or a mobile game. Between AdGuard and the two YouTube-customizing extensions below, I haven’t seen an ad on YouTube in Safari in months.
Noir
Adds a dark mode to any website. It's using heuristics (fancy guessing) to figure out which website colors need to be changed so that it's properly darking, so sometimes it can make mistakes. In that case, it has a built in way to send a bug report to the developer, who is pretty responsive in my experience. You can also turn it off for specific sites right from inside Safari.
uBlacklist
This addon hides search engine results with specific domains. Example: you can hide images results from AI generator sites, OR if you search for tech support advice and one of those stupid auto-generated sites filled with SEO garbage but no actual information keeps popping up, you can use this addon to hide everything from that website, right from the Google/DuckDuckGo/other search results.
Userscripts
Allows you to install userscripts and stylesheets that customize website behavior or appearance. The addon can check for updates of your userscripts and uses iCloud to synchronize them across devices too, which is really nice. The userscripts I use are:
Bypass Paywalls Clean (removes news website paywalls)
Amazon Sponsored Products Removal (self-explanatory)
Redirect Fandom to BreezeWiki (bypasses ad-filled fandom.com domains for indie wikis or an ad-free proxy site. The link documents 2 userscripts with slightly different behavior; use whichever you prefer).
Sink It for Reddit
I switched to using Reddit in the browser only after the whole API/third party apps fiasco. AdGuard blocks the ads in the web interface, but there were still a lot of annoyances because Reddit constantly bombarded you with prompts/popups trying to get you to switch to their app so they could track you and sell you ads. Sink It for Reddit removes all of those popups and lets you customize the behavior of the Reddit website too (tapping a post can open it in a new tab, back to top buttons for long posts, and video downloads, among other things). Constantly being updated too, which is nice to see.
UnTrap (USD $1.99)
This extension cleans up the YouTube interface in the browser. You can hide Shorts, Explore, Trending, and multiple flavors of Suggestions (videos, playlists, etc.). It also has a content filter you can use to ensure you never see certain channels or even specific videos by ID, username, or keyword/regex. There are over 50 options you can tweak for the video playback page alone, so if you’re looking to remove an annoyance from YouTube in Safari on iOS, this is the addon for you. Note however that this is the first extension I’ve recommended that does NOT have a free version.
Vinegar (USD $1.99)
This extension replaces YouTube’s custom video player with a standard HTML5 one. This means that YT videos will play back using the standard iOS video player interface, including all of the accompanying benefits: better interface, Picture in Picture/popout videos work, videos continue playing in the background even if you leave Safari, etc.. I was even able to start a YouTube video in Safari, lock my phone, and then continue playing the video and hear the audio over my car’s speakers via CarPlay. These are all normally locked features reserved for YouTube Premium subscribers. You can also set a default quality that it will use so YouTube won’t use “auto” and set you to 360p just because you’re using a phone.

Retro Corner: Vay (Sega CD) Review
Tumblr media
A new edition of Retro Corner Reviews is up, and we finally tackle a Sega CD game called Vay that was a JRPG. Developed by Hertz who are known for putting together the Genesis port of Outrun was tasked to produce a traditional role playing game. When it came to RPGs in general, the Mega Drive was a distant second to the Super NES that had hosted many titles of the genre. That forced Sega to produce their own games like Phantasy Star to make up for the lack of these titles. It is one of the reasons the House of Sonic wanted to release their own CD add-on beyond trying to stay competitive. While Compact Disks as a format was the next thing for gaming, Sega was obviously trying to get the genre on their platform. This was to entice third parties to develop on the Sega CD using the more advanced technology then the base system couldn’t perform. As history tells us, that didn’t work out for the House of Sonic for more than just this genre. Despite getting a string of decent games, the addon’s lineup was nowhere near the quality of the Super NES’s JRPG library.
For Vay it is titled this based on the plot about an advanced alien mech crashing on a planet that was still developing. Over a thousand years ago, a battle was waged far from most civilized planets in space. In the midst of the war, one lone large mech veered off randomly straight into unknown space after its pilot was killed. It eventually crashed on a world that was still primitive in a medieval age and on auto pilot the advanced armor attempts to destroy all life across the planet. Eventually, five of the powerfullest wizards cast a spell to subdue and seal away the advanced mechanized armor. After a millennium had passed a marriage between a prince named Sandor was set to marry his lover Elin to ensure the Lorath Kingdom was secure. However, his kingdom was unaware the Danek Empire was staging an invasion using technology from the legend to attack and kidnap Elin. Now, Sandor must brave an adventure to save his lover and stop the Danek Empire from its conquest across the world. The gameplay follows the traditional format that many studios used regardless of what quality they were. Can the studio of Hertz redeem their previous work? Vay (Sega CD) Review

So, I just discovered tumblr Desktop also allows me to change the theme of my dash. Haven’t used desktop tumblr in a long ass time so it’s probably an old feature, but I really like it when there’s built in features to allow me to customize my experience on a website or app as I see fit.
Discord Nitro also has this feature, but it’s a shame it’s a paid feature, I wouldn’t go out of my way to get Nitro for it if I didn’t already have Nitro so I can send walls of text about writing projects to a few friends who I regularly get feedback from on there.
And of course, there are third party extensions, like Stylus for Firefox, which allow you to download custom themes for certain websites, but updates to the website itself often break these.
If anyone knows how to customize other things, such as the appearance of Windows (Win 10 specifically) please feel free to chuck that knowledge my way.
Also included is my list of browser addons for anone interested. Links available upon request.
