The Whumps of March
This is a multi-fandom whump event with prompts inspired by literature. For this inaugural event, I decided to take inspiration from the Bard himself. If it goes well I'd love to do it again next year, the universe willing.
Rules and info:
You can make your entries in whatever format you desire (Fanfic, art, Gifs, etc)
You can do as much or as little as you desire.
All entries are to be uploaded during March 2024. Earlier is discouraged but late is fine.

The Whumps of March 2024: "Castigate"
A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.
"I can't believe this!"
Merlin winced. He wouldn't have thought that Arthur's anger could make him wince. After all, he had known this whelp since he was born...earlier, even.
And it wasn't like he hadn't seen this confrontation coming.
The king paced back and forth, rage giving him too much energy to stand still. "So it's true, then? You really did—that? To my mother?"
Merlin noted, in the back of his mind, that it was the first time that Arthur had called her that without sounding awkward. What he said was, "I don't recall doing anything to her, my king. I cast a spell on your father, at his request."
"So that he could—he—!"
Arthur ran his hand through his hair, breathing hard. "Why?" he said finally, turning to face his old teacher.
Merlin closed his eyes wearily. "'Why' what? Be clear, Arthur. Define your aim—"
"Shut up, old man! Why would you help him with something so—foul? When Kay or I asked you to help us sneak pastries from the kitchen, we'd get a lecture at best, or a box in the ears! I can't even imagine what you'd say if we had asked for a spell to trick some girl—some married woman—!" His face twisted, and for another moment he was unable to speak clearly. "So why did you do it for him?"
"Have you considered that he was my king, and I was bound to heed his requests?"
"I want the real reason."
Despite everything, Merlin nodded. "Good. I would have been disappointed if you had misread me so. A perfectly obvious answer for most people, of course, but you're assessing my motives. I always knew you would make an excellent king."
Arthur's fist slammed down on a table. "Answer the damn question!"
Merlin breathed deeply.
"That is my answer. Because I knew you would make an excellent king." He stroked his beard slowly, thoughtfully. "Because I saw, perhaps at the same moment that King Uther was first enchanted Duchess Igraine's beauty, a future where their son would be born. A son who could, perhaps...with the correct upbringing, the right guidance...become the greatest king that this land will ever know. One who could achieve things, such marvelous things!—if you only knew some of the paths that I've seen, the great things that you might accomplish—!"
He raised his hand, then lowered it. When he looked back at Arthur, he suddenly seemed very old.
"You would not have been born, had I not done what I did. And that seemed like a worthy end, no matter the price."
The two stared at each other for a long moment. Arthur's chest rose and fall heavily. His face was stony, his eyes hard to read.
Merlin thought they looked guilty.
"I want you out of Camelot by sundown tomorrow."
With that, Arthur turned on his heel and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
The silence was heavy for several seconds. Then, Merlin sighed.
It wasn't like he hadn't seen this coming. Not because of foresight. Because he knew the sort of man that Arthur was. The sort of man he had helped raise him to be.
He had always known that Arthur would hate him for this. That had been part of the price.

Whumps of March day 10 - In Disguise

Carrying Ace was the hardest 9 months of Mitsume’s life, up until the day she was forced to leave him. It was hiding her stomach in any way she could manage and unfamiliar things like illness and aching. It was hiding that part, too.
Thankfully, Giroli was a kind and reasonable man and didn’t comment on it as long as she did her job, and he did his. Mitsume always enjoyed the games, he always chose players with the most to win from a little battle prestige.
And thankfully, playing around with the clothes of the time wasn’t wrong either, apparently it spiced up the season, according to the audience.
And yet, hiding was hard. Pretending she was unchanged with a warm power that had been born inside her, born next to her beloved son… was hard. She was unnatural in her skin and changed.
Maximus held her and told her it was natural, that she was perfect. He supported her in every way. Her masks were all stripped away by his brightness that sometimes he wondered why he considered her the star.
But every day, she still had to return to the DGP… pretending she was someone she wasn’t.

The Whumps of March 2024: "Fairies"
A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.
It was not enough that Queen Elaine of Benoic had lost her husband and her kingdom in one night. Somehow, she didn't even know how, her baby had disappeared as well.
She had put him down to try and revive her husband. She had failed, and when she came back...she had only gone a few feet away. She couldn't have lost him, and she couldn't have failed to hear someone come up and take him—even a fox couldn't have been so stealthy. But as much as she looked, tearing through the foliage and screaming in panic, she found not a single thread of his blanket, nothing but an indentation in the grass where she had left him.
She wept all night, and many more besides.
A year later, as she was living in a covenant with her sister Evaine—also widowed and bereft of her own sons—they saw it.
A vision. Not a dream, no, they were awake, and this was real, as real as magic or love or despair. They saw their boys—not babies but boys now, approaching manhood, laughing and playing with sticks as toy swords. She recognized the shape of Ban's face and her own nose, the features blending beautifully in their handsome child.
She reached out to touch him, but the whole image disappeared.
For a long moment, neither spoke. Evaine was the first to start crying.
"The fairies have taken them," she whispered, her face pale, a stream of tears running down her cheek.
Elaine didn't answer, just stood there, frozen with her hand out to touch her illusionary son.
Who could understand what fairies did? Why had they taken these children? And why send this vision, all these months later?
Perhaps it was meant to be reassuring. To tell the sisters that their sons were alright, living happy and strong in some fairy paradise.
Maybe. But to Elaine, it felt more like the fairies were just twisting the knife.
