I'll Look After You - Part 6 - Bucky & Y/N

It was but a mere 36 hours till their date and Bucky was still fucked. Nothing he came up with seemed good enough. He could take her to dinner sure, but somehow that didn't seem to be enough? Other options weren't thrilling him either.
'How about a picnic? Girls like picnics.' offered Curt.
'A picnic? Wouldn't a fancy restaurant be better than sitting on the ground?' Bucky wasn't sure how Y/N would feel about that.
'A picnic sounds nice. Theres a nice park in town, got a little pond with ducks in it.' Gale gave him his usual 'it will be fine' smile. 'Just make her feel special.' he then offered.
But how on earth was Bucky to show her just how special she was? Nothing seemed good enough. But he was running out of time. A picnic would have to do. 'Okay, a picnic. Got any idea what you bring to a picnic?'
After Gale kindly helped him assemble the required necessities for his picnic; a blanket and some cushions, a basket, some sandwiches and some cupcakes he had begged the chefs in the mess hall for, and a bottle of wine he wasnt sure how Curt got a hold of, Bucky felt a little more at ease about his date. He had done this countless times. Take a pretty girl out on the town, show her a good time. But this felt different. He felt like a schoolboy again. When he arrived at the door of Y/Ns living quarters, it took him almost a full five minutes to knock on the door. When he did, she answered almost immediatly. Wow. She's so beautiful. He already knew she was beautiful of course, but something about seeing her outside of the infirmary, seeing the sunlight hit her face, she was an angel. He handed her the flowers he had picked for her. 'Hi. You look, wow you look pretty.' I'm such an idiot. He thought. She laughed, 'Why thank you. You look pretty good yourself. I'll put these in some water and then we can go.' she turned back into her quarters. Bucky was glad of the few moments alone to compose himself. Get it together Major.
When she returned, he offered her the crook of his elbow and escorted her to his jeep. 'Are you going to tell me where we're going? I wasnt sure what to wear. Am I dressed appropriately?'
'It's a suprise. You look magnificent and yes your choice of clothing is wonderful.' He gave her a wink as he started the jeep and drove them to the town park.
Once they had parked the jeep it was only a short walk to the pond in the centre of the park. It was Summer-time, the air was warm, sun shining in the sky. It was one of the few days in England that would honestly say the weather was perfect. Bucky layed down the blanket and cushions and got his supplies from the basket. 'I hope this is okay, i wasnt sure but Buck said-' 'This is wonderful.' she smiled. 'I've never been on a picnic before.'
Bucky couldn't help the words that came out next. 'Well, I am truly honoured to pop your picnic cherry.' He said with a wink.
The laughter that errupted from Y/N was enormous. Her whole body shook with the force of it. 'Oh wow. Major Egan, You really know how to make a lady blush.' 'That's not all I know how to do.' another mischievous wink. Y/N laughed again. Bucky's mood quickly turned sour when he opened his picnic basket. The wine was now warm, and the cupcakes had gotten tossed around and were smushed. 'Fuck.' Bucky muttered under his breath. 'What'a wrong?' 'The food, it's all smushed. I'm sorry Y/N-' She peered into the basket while cutting him off. 'The sandwiches are fine. And those cupcakes still look pretty edible to me.' She opened the wine and poured it into the glasses Bucky brought, passing one to him and taking a sip. 'Tastes lovely.'
Some time had passed as they sat talking, eating sandwiches and cupcakes and drinking warm wine. While it wasnt the best meal Bucky had ever had, he quickly realised he would gladly eat Meatballs food if she was sitting next to him. They talked about life before the war, their hometowns, things they enjoy. It was wonderful. The sun was starting to set, giving everything a beautiful golden glow. She looked even more like an angel from heaven. He was drawn to her, he felt himself move closer and closer. She had stopped talking to him, instead looking from his eyes to his lips. She wants me to kiss her. He slowly inched his face closer to hers when suddenly *drip*. A drop of rain right on the tip of his nose. He chose to ignore it, moving even closer to the pair of beautiful soft lips infront of him.
The skys opened. It rained harder than Bucky had ever seen before. He had forgotten how unpredictible the English weather could be. 'Fuck!' he yelled as they both jumped up from the ground and started throwing things back into the basket. There was a small pub just across the street from the park. 'This way!' Bucky yelled while grabbing her hand, the two running for cover.
They entered the small pub, soaking from head to toe. Y/N's hear now clung to her in soaking wet tendrils, her eye makeup sliding down her face. Yet somehow, she was still smiling up at him. He spotted a lit fireplace in the corner. 'Come here Y/N, I'm so sorry! You're soaked you're going to catch a cold.' 'Bucky I'm fine its just a little rain.' 'No no, sit here, close to the fire.' At that moment an elderly woman, presumably someone who worked in the pub, Came to them with two towels. 'These should help.' Bucky quickly wrapped a towel around Y/N. 'Yes! Thank you, can we get a drink too? Whiskey? Hot whiskey! Thats good for colds right? Oh god I'm sorry Y/N I -' 'Bucky! Calm down!' She cut him off. It was the most stern he had ever heard her. 'We will take two hot whiskeys please, with honey and sugar. Bucky sit down and dry yourself off.' Bucky did as he was told and the barwoman left to go make their drinks.
'Last I checked you don't control the weather, so why are you appologizing?' Bucky couldnt even look at her, instead looking into the warm flames of the fire. 'This date. I wanted it to be perfect for you, but it has quite literally been a washout.' She placed her hand on his chin, turning him to look at her. His expression was that of an abandoned puppy. She almost laughed, but knew that would be cruel. 'I'm sorry you haven't been enjoying our date, I thought it was lovely.' 'You did? But the rain and the food it-' 'It was all wonderful. Yes the wine was warm, but it still tasted nice, and the cupcakes were a little smushed but they just become smushed in your mouth when you eat them anyway. The sandwiches were lovely. And now look at us. Were in this lovely little pub, sitting by the fire, and by the looks of it a band is going to be starting soon.' Bucky looked behind him to were some men were setting up instruments. 'I cant think of a better way to end the evening, can you?' She truly is the most wonderful woman. What did I do to deserve someone as wonderful as her? 'You're right doll, this is perfect.'
Several hot whiskeys later and Y/N and Bucky were more than a little tipsy. The band was playing and many of the pub patrons were dancing on the makeshift dancefloor. 'Come on doll, how about a dance?' Bucky said as he pulled Y/N to the dancefloor. 'I'm not much of a dancer Major.' 'It's okay, neither am I.' He spun her around and they danced like nobody was watching, often bumping into other dancers near by. But neither one cared. They laughed and laughed as they tripped over each others feet, holding eachother closer to steady themselves. Y/N realised this was the most fun she had had with anyone in a long time, maybe even ever.
They danced until they were physically kicked out of the pub. They walked hand in hand, swaying side to side, laughing and giggling the whole way back to Thorpp Abbotts. When they reached Y/N quarters, both suddenly felt sad. Neither one of them wanted the night to end. Y/N turned to Bucky, her back against the door. 'Bucky, thank you. I had the most wonderful time today.' 'The pleasure was all mine doll.' They looked into eachothers eyes, the moonlight illuminating their faces. Bucky wanted so badly to bend down and kiss her. But he was worried the moment had passed. He didnt want her to presume he expected anything of her. Although he would take anything and everything she had to offer him. He was broken out of his thoughts by her voice. 'Bucky?' 'Yeah doll?' 'Can you please stop thinking about kissing me and actually do it?' He had never fulfilled a request faster.

There are many who if you ask them will say they aren't quite convinced that Sparda's dead. What is your opinion on the matter? If you believe he's alive, what do you think has been going on with him all of these years?
Even you you believe he's dead, let's just hypothetically say he's making his return after DMC 5. How do you think this will go? What do you think he's been doing? How will he react to this new world and all that's happened? Most importantly, how will other characters react to his return?

Sparda is proooobably long dead, but I really hope he isnt and we could see him return. Many fans are against this, as Spardas return might put in question the accomplishments of his sons, and raise a hellton of questions, and yeah, I want those questions raised and I would love to have answers for them! I am in DMC for the family drama TM and Sparda suddenly returning 36 years late for his sons would be one hell of a family drama.
Both twins carry their daddy issues very close (both living in their fathers shadow, Vergil having tried to live up to it which lead him to catastrophic failure, and Dante hating his father and by extension his demonic heritage for abandoning their family, which became the core of Dantes huge abandonment issues) and I dont think either of them ever worked these through, so they could really use some brotherly beating-the-shit-out of their father cause he deserves it, and theyll never go to therapy, so this is their closest analog. Nero will get another family crisis, also a possible religious crisis? Basically, not a single sparda can figure out their issues until they start hitting them in the face, so Sparda returning will really benefit all of them.
This goes with a huge caveat that Sparda has somehow lost his powers (excluding immortality???), or at least, the twins are more powerful than him at the moment (because theres enough OP silver demons in this series we literally cant have another), AND that he could not have returned sooner/was captured/lost in time/literally any reason he could not have returned to his sons.
There is a (you guessed it) ru fanfic called Hapless Eva (Бедная Ева by xenosha @th-xeno ), where this exact scenario is explored. It's one of the best fics for DMC I've read, and affects my opinion on the topic greatly, so its obligatory to mention it here. I completely agree with the author that the twins will be furious with Sparda, and in their anger they wont let him to even try to explain what happened. Nero will be in shock, and the raw amount of hatred he saw from twins will only prolong his confusion and make him concerned about them, his anger at Sparda will come sometime later. Sparda, of course, will be hurt by behavior of his sons, but he and Nero dont have as much issues with each other and will be very mutually curious. So, once again, Nero comes to the rescue of his idiotic family members, and he will be the bridge between generations all of them need.
The ending here is much more ambiguous though. DMC 5 ended with twins cooperating and Vergil giving Nero a very personal item, so all the parties had good intentions for each other, thus their relationships to each other could be mended (through effort, failure, pain and effort again). Sparda going off radar is the starting point of ALL the issues in the franchise, literally all of them can be traced to Sparda missing, and this is a much much worse case than anything else in the series. The ending here depends on Spardas own feelings on his absence and the circumstances of it. Since I want just tons of (hurt/)comfort for all spardas, I will hope they can overcome their issues and accept Sparda back into the family.
Another thing Sparda returning would add is LORE. PLEASE. Give me Hell lore, gimme demonic anatomy lore (not in a smutty way, in a biology way if possible), gimme demonic culture, gimme more awesome demon designs, gimme Sparda backstory, gimme Mundus backstory, are they twins too? How the hell was Dante able to beat Mundus in DMC1, but couldn't beat Urizen in DMC5? Was Urizen stronger than Mundus??? Where is the tribe of Cerberuses located, please, I want a three-headed elemental doggo lair location to pet them all
yeeeah, there are a lot of inconsistencies and plot holes in DMC lore and Sparda returning could Hopefully provide some answers.

me watching An Anime (in this case Mob Psycho 100) with subtitles (because my ear is a bit off and I have a poor vocabulary) is always a little bit of an internal analysis of translation choices:
i mean I know why they translate “もてる” to “popular” but it really is not the same thing.
actually it’s an interesting word now that I look at it. like huh is it really the kanji “持てる” as in “持つ” as in “to hold,” as in “you have the capacity to hold [attention, popularity, likeability].” there is also a pretty solid connotation of being Hot, but also of having like… qualifications for being popular/desirable, I guess, like a fun personality, or having a good job. I wouldn’t call “持てる” to be “popularity” itself, but rather to have the traits that are known to make one attractive/desirable, which may naturally leads to popularity, specifically popularity with The Ladies.
Alternative translation: “swag”

I love the absolute zero positive emotions anyone in the fandom has towards Gavilar. what is the zellion sweep. i have no clue what it is. help
lets set the scene. its october 2022. tensions are high in the fandom due to a maelstrom of events. we are all at our wits end. i, personally, am going through one of the worst periods of my whole life for non cosmere reasons. we're all tired. we're fucking exausted
and then. i get an email. from the kickstarter. theres one more stretch goal left to reveal. i wonder who it is? kelsier? evi? elhokar? then i read the email. "brandon said "let's add zellion." we are proud to announce our final miniature will be zellion!"

i am at my wits end, and so is alanamy the-tumblr-user-formerly-known-as-moash, currently tumblr user zellionsweep. they make some silly posts about who the fuck is zellion. i also make some posts like who the fuck is zellion. alanamy zellionsweep tags these posts #ZELLIONSWEEP as a reference to the #MORBIUSSWEEP meme from a few months back.
from there, the lore begins. i make silly posts about zellion's unrequited love for szeth. i make a post claiming that he and dalinar were once lovers. others assert that he has no bitches, he gets no pussy, he receives no cock. he is bisexual. he is biphobic. he is a menace. he's dating moash now. he's secretly kelsier, no, evi, no, aesudan, no, fused dalinar. he's like the wind, he's everywhere and nowhere. nonsensical headcanons are posted under the hashtag #zellionsweep. tumblr user kaladins-simp-list begins compiling a list of all the zellion lore. it is very inconsistent. we all have our own unique interpretations of the character.
zellionsweep escapes containment and ends up on r/cremposting. i find out how many of my tumblr mutuals have reddit accounts. people start flying dangerously close to post limit. we are fucking insane. we needed this. after weeks and weeks of moashcourse and syladin and mistborn era 2 discussion and the ever looming threat of cosmere adaptations and stress and frustration, we finally get to let loose and clown on brand sand for the stupidest decision he has ever made, which is entrusting us with a brand new guy and not telling us anything about him and expecting everyone to be normal about it.

so either encanto takes place in an alternate dimension where ultrasound was widely available much earlier (very possible, theres magic and its disney)
there are alternate ways of figuring out youre carrying triplets (also very possible, im not well versed in the ways of pregnancy)

Irony of the batfam is like bruce adopted the batkids so that they have a chance of a normal childhood, but because of robin training i cant imagine there was time to be a normal kid day to day, going out with friends, just chilling, or just doing whatever or developing a hobby. Whatever remaining innocence they might have still had was proberbly stripped away as well.

ever since i moved over to the east bay
life has ended for me
the only lifei have now is overseas

Unus Annus Secrets
Here I’m going to try and explain all of the Unus Annus codes + possible lore. If I have forgotten some information or if one of these links doesnt work/is incorrect please let me know. This post will be updated when needed.
This is LONG, so be prepared.
At first, these codes were only in videos edited by NerdFiction, but as of October 26th this is no longer true. (The possible exception to this would be the first video I’ve listed, as the editor is not in the description).
1) 5 Weird Apps That Predicted Our Death
“Here at Unus Annus the end is nigh... when the timer hits zero we will cease to exist. is it fate? is this a simulation? Can anybody hear me? My name is.... [FILE REDACTED]”. Timestamp - 0:14
2) Ethan Roasts Mark for 15 Minutes Straight
“and in the comments, you will read the words you soon will see are wise controlling pawns who type our deed ‘That is Discord, not FaceTime’” Timestamp - 0:40
“within this truth a question stands, is the pee sauna ever close?”. [“Pee Sauna”was uploaded about a week afterwards] Timestamp - 0:40
3) Our Fans Try to Scare Us with Their Homemade Creepypasta
“What will happen if the clock stops”

4) Learning to Cry on Command to Increase Our Youtube Views
“remember the key, the incompletion of a logolept’s corrective action” [a logolept is “a person who takes a keen interest in words”. Marcus is likely referring to himself.] Timestamp - 1:49
“the long wait ends with twenty four more for a path of destiny chosen before”[“Pee Sauna” was uploaded the day after] (closely after the last code)
5) Becoming One With the Horse
“They heard me, I knew it could work!” (timestamp currently unknown; to be updated)
Around this time, NerdFiction’s Twitter bio said, among his normal information, that he was “trying to stop the Unus Annus clock from within.”
6) Preparing a 5-Star Meal for Our Youtube Famous Dogs
“I couldn’t stop it. Will I die with the machine?” (Timestamp - 21:33)
7) Does This Magnetic Skincare Routine Really Work?
“freed or so I thought. Another layer, but still the clock.” (Timestamp - 9:45)
“The Beginning of The End”.
On July 26th, at 12pm PST, a video was uploaded to Unus Annus titled “Traversing the Desert to Find Our Inner Truth”. This video was only up for a few minutes before it mysteriously disappeared, only to be replaced by another video, titled “The Beginning of The End”. At first glance, the videos were identical, save for different titles and slightly different descriptions. However, the second video was slightly longer than the first, and upon further inspection, many came to realize that the audio was slightly different as well. You can listen to both audios here. There was a rumor going around that the captions of “Traversing the Desert to Find Our Inner Truth” said something about looking out for Norbert Moses, but no one has been able to confirm this to my knowledge.
8) Puberty Simulator
“Happy birthday to the beast or to the body that once housed me. A transfer made for pity’s sake. Tricked into the machine as he had my cake.” (Timestamp - 14:36) [The same code was found a week earlier in “Mark and Ethan Shave Chica”, uploaded on NerdFiction’s birthday. The original code was very difficult to make out, so it is likely he inserted it into a different video to make it easier for us.]
On the same day, NerdFiction’s Twitter bio read “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies. Memento Memoriae” (remember memory)
In “The Koala Challenge: TikTok’s Intimate Couple’s Trend” one of the clips is edited to look like a TikTok video, with the user ron_somberest being used. Ron_Somberest is an anagram for Norbert Moses. This TikTok account does actually exist, and the icon is a zoomed in and brightened photo of Norbert Moses’s face with the eyes scribbled out.
Around this time NerdFiction’s Twitter bio read “’It’s not dark, never was’ - Ron Bestsmore”. Ron Bestsmore is also an anagram for Norbert Moses. It is possible that the “dark” being referred to here is Darkiplier, and NerdFiction is trying to imply that Dark is not involved in this.
About a week after the koala challenge video was “How to Start a Fire (except don’t)”, which featured an appearance from Unus. NerdFiction’s Twitter bio read “In the end, who is your savior and what are they saving you from?”
Things were quiet for about a month. NerdFiction eventually erased the cryptic message from his Twitter bio.
9) Learning To Use The Force
“wait no something is wrong. he knows!” (Timestamp - 10:45) [translated from small coded words hidden in the montage]
“STOPTHISWHATAREYOUDOINGO3″ (Timestamp - 11:40)
“it worked” (a spectrogram, derived from a sound played at the end of the video)
10) Momiplier Tells Us True Scary Stories from Korea
“As I was, as I’ve done to him now. Am I right to decide his fate?” (Timestamp - 5:44) [Right before this, Mark’s mom is talking about a nightmare she had where she was paralyzed, possibly implying that nerdfiction was once paralyzed and has now paralyzed someone else (pointed out by @/minervas-sandwich)]
11) Cryptid Olympics
“I thought you’d join us but, hey, that was just a theory, Memento Doctrina” (remember learning). (Timestamp - 5:49) [The code references the Game Theorists channel, which had uploaded a video about Unus Annus earlier that same day.]

12) Edward Pumpkin Hands - This was the first coded video not edited by NerdFiction, instead being edited by Diceroll.
At various points throughout the video small parts of a url are seen. When pieced together, this link is made: https://imgur.com/a/tyDewJ7. It leads to a photo of the Unus Annus hourglass. When edited, a series of binary text is shown, which translates to “zhIaNL2“. Inputting this into another imgur link gets you to https://imgur.com/a/zhIaNL2. After editing the photo (although you can still sorta see it without doing so), a cipher of a custom alphabet is shown (I posted an edited photo here).
At 5:01 in the video a weird image is shown for only a moment (a slightly brightened version of it here). Nobody knows what the hell it means.
At the same time, there is a reversed audio of someone (presumably Ethan; it sounds like him) saying “we did that”. For context, the sentence said right before that line was “if one of us dies, the other has to take over for the remainder of time”. This is possibly implying that someone, or multiple someones, has/have died and been replaced.
13) Blood Bath - edited by rad_r
“Everything’s fine”
The Unus Annus timer is shown. It counts down for three seconds before counting up for one second. Heavy breathing can be heard over it. It is then cancelled by an error message
“ITS NOT FINE HELP” (this and the previous two messages are hidden at 5:57)
“you’ve done it now.. a machine observed. there is no returning.. a machine unnerved. there is only.. a machine unconqured.” (right at the end of the video, before the timer)
14) The Unus Annus Annual Costume Contest - edited by nerdfiction
“I saw just one door in a hall filled with many, I locked your gate but they were too late to join me. He was re-placed, she was undone, I had escaped yet he had still won”. (Timestamp - 2:05) [possibly talking about diceroll and rad_r. The pronouns would line up, and it would make sense with those two now having edited coded videos.]
15) Ethan Turns Mark Into a Werewolf - edited by rad_r
“futility or farewell? only time time time.” (timestamp - 7:17)
16) Ethan Kidnapped Mark - edited by Diceroll
Two spectrograms are shown in this video; one at 14:08 and one at 17:38. Combined, they create an imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/gKB62sv
The imgur link shows a photo of a key. On the key is a code translating to “stop the clock”
At the end of the video before the timer is a set of text in the custom alphabet previously mentioned. Translated and decoded it translates to “I can hear it coming theres not much time left the ones that tried to stop it have had their hearts cleft it is now your turn to put this loop to rest take us out of here and show us a new nest”

20. A reoccurring theme I love in this show is the idea that the characters will give up their belongings, no matter how sentimental, in the name of family. Matthew selling his dead brothers watch, Marilla selling her grandmothers brooch, Anne selling the dress of her dreams, all because no matter how important these items are, they are just things. That was the last income he was going to give his family and he’s so ashamed of himself that he keeps apologizing for it despite most of the money being his. He apologizes to Anne, to Matthew, it bothers him for months to come

Dude you actually got me at the BEST moment, and I am saying this before I lose this post in my drafts and will cry if I end up letting this sit longer than tonight. But that is a perfect amount of questions, I'm going to try to not be long winded and rambly like I normally get. So far its not going well
Jedi or Sith?
Jedi! I just really like the lightside, theres not much more to it.
2. Favourite character from sequal trilogy?
FINN!! Okay I admittedly do not rewatch the sequels like I do the prequels, but thats because the prequels are what I watched on repeat. HOWEVER, Finn had my heart the moment he came on screen for the commercial for The Force Awakens. I was so excited for his character and story to unfold, I had a lot of high hopes for him and exploring a lot of the ex-storm trooper pieces. Needless to say I was very sad that we didn't get more of that. I *grasping at non existent straws* I wanted more from him. Like I know he's force sensitive and training to be a jedi- but I think I either would have wanted to see him and Rey come into being jedi together- Rey focused trying to figure out what it means to be a jedi in the sort of mythical sense they seem to have in the sequels, and Finn establishing what the jedi need to be to people in the world of the sequels. I love him so much, I just wish he had the chance for more
12. Which character would you be friends with?
I don't exactly make friends easily...I'm a very quiet person irl, so I'm not really sure. I'd like to try to be Obi-Wan and Ahsoka's friend- but I also get the feeling that they (mostly Obi-Wan) would manage to say something that set off some sort of fight or flight response (theres a whole fic on what would happen to my brain so like-) Honestly, irl, I rarely go out of my way to befriend people, friends sorta just happen in some shape or form to me? That being said I think I'd probably would end up being friends with them, maybe even Mace. Like my irl friends are either older like my parents, or like about my age with my same sense of dead ass humor.
17. How were you introduced to the fandom?
So I've loved star wars since I was little, didn't start to process it until I was like 9 or 10 when my mom laughed too hard a toy story 2 joke that referenced Empire Strikes Back- but I didn't start participating in fandom until like a few months ago. Like I started drafting fanfiction and ocs over a year ago because a friend begged me to watch clone wars, and the dark saber appearing in the Mandalorian got me curious, but like it wasn't until REALLY recently that I've started actively talking to people in the fandom. I guess I'd have to say the ice storm that hit texas last year began my slow decent into fandom spaces. the power was coming on sporadically, and I have a notebook filled with all my first notes for my OC and it was the only way to keep my mind off the power staying off longer and longer.
36. Opinions on the Mandalorian?
Lol That was part of my stepping stone to getting back into star wars. It made me go watch the animated shows. I really like the Mandalorian, I'm interested in where its going. I do wish that he would stay in his lane though because I wanted more time for Boba Fett, but I'm hoping to see more of him in S3 so I guess thats okay. I kinda like that they're trying to reshape what it is to be Mandalorian in the show, because so far we've had Death Watch, Satine, and bounty hunters, at least for televised media. Given that he was straight up told "then you're no longer a Mandalorian" I'm really interested in seeing how they redefine that. I anxiously await Sabine to appear

26. Free Little Library by Naomi Kritzer: tor.com short story. there’s a magical being that uses the free little library as the ultimate resource in gaining power and bettering their society. cute with a vengeful twist.
27. Sinew and Steel and What They Told by Carrie Vaughn: tor.com short story. i don’t remember this one super well but i remember the structure being cool
28. The Naming by Alison Croggon: book 1 in The Books of Pellinor series. cool magic system, some chosen one and mistaken identity, family LITERALLY found. looking forward to the next one
29. CHECK, PLEASE!, BOOK 2: STICKS AND SCONES BY NGOZI UKAZU: volume 2 of an amazing web series turned graphic novel about a college hockey player who likes to bake and falls in love with his captain its FANTASTIC and i recommend this series to literally everyone i know
30. Eric by Terry Pratchett: Discworld #9. Faust retelling as the premise. guy tries to summon a demon. gets Rincewind and his Trunk out of the demon realm instead. hijinks ensue from there. you probably need some discworld knowledge to follow this one
31. The Secret Life of Sparrow Delaney by Suzanne Harper: middle grade coming of high school novel. Sparrow Delaney can see and talk to ghosts, but she’s keeping her powers from her family (also ghost seers) because she just wants to be normal. a new family moves to town after their oldest son dies. oldest son’s ghost is hanging around his little brother and meets sparrow
32. An Explorer’s Cartography of Already Settled Lands by Fran Wilde: tor.com short story. what can you map? just geography? how sad for you. this narrator can map all sorts of things from bird migrations to emotions of a city
33. The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner: book 2 in the Queen’s Thief series (complete now). i got into these because of a few different fanfics mentioning them and they are AMAZING I’m very annoyed i didn’t know about them sooner. political intrigue, gods, competent people doing their jobs, everyone underestimating said competent people
34. A Pound of Paper: Confessions of a Book Addict by John Baxter: so i stopped reading this one about halfway through because i didn’t need to read about the various orgies thrown by authors/literary agents this man attended. also he’s not so much into reading as collecting and that’s boring to me.
35. Love Charms and Other Catastrophes by Kimberly Karalius: book 2 in the Grimbaud series. definitely need to read the first book for context. but its a really sweet series with a dark underbelly that gives a nice contrast. think the paper magician series but milder on all fronts.
36. First Kisses and Other Misfortunes by Kimberly Karalius: set after book 1 in the Grimbaud series it expands on what happens to the main couple from book 1 before book 2 opens. read on swoonreads which is now fiercereads.
37. The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle: goblin king retelling. first in a trilogy. i enjoyed it, especially as the narrator sticks it to abuse family members
38. The Golden Specific by S.E. Grove: book 2 in the mapmakers trilogy. fascinating world building that you absolutely need the first book to understand. aimed at high schoolers. across the world there are different times existing at once. middle ages, technological age, 1800′s, and more times are interacting depending on where in the world you are. sometimes the lines shift.
39. The Crimson Skew by S. E. Grove: book 3 in the mapmakers trilogy. back in america a war is brewing that has managed to weaponize some sort of airborne disease/??? that explodes people. yeah. satisfying close to the series.
40. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik: why why WHY was this my first Novik book. what was i waiting for??? polish folklore inspired. theres a winter (elf? goblin?) king who needs gold and wife. a fire demon trying to escape his (metaphorical) chains to take down the winter world. and a girl who can turn silver into gold. (by trading). politcal intrigue, magic, a really heavy crown. well worth the read. on a wavelength with the winternight series.
41. The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop: A Memoir, A History by Buzbee Lewis: I picked this up because its about a bookstore and the author’s name is buzbee. cute little memoir with an overview of the history of books/bookstores from ancient times to now
42. All Systems Red by Martha Wells: book 1 in the murderbot diaries. this was actually a reread for me, but it had been long enough that i wanted to refresh and its a novella so its a fast read. A Security Unit (SecUnit) that calls itself Murderbot has hacked its own governor module so that it can watch its soap operas. Now if only the humans it was responsible for would stop being so dumb.
43. Artificial Condition by Martha Wells: book 2 in the Murderbot diaries. Murderbot has freed itself from its government contracts and is working on its own. Murderbot gets a lift to a planet from its past from an empty transport vehicle, named Asshole Research Transport (ART) by Murderbot.
44. Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells: book 3 in the Murderbot diaries. Murderbot’s story continues. pretty crucial that you read these in order. Murderbot continues to be put off by humans and their behavior. Still just trying to consume the media it wants without being bothered.
45. Exit Strategy by Martha Wells: book 4 in the Murderbot diaries. Murderbot meets back up with the humans from book 1. chaos ensues while trying to escape the company that Murderbot used to be contracted to.
46. Network Effect by Martha Wells: book 5 in the Murderbot diaries. first full length novel in the series. another one to come in April 2021. Murderbot gets kidnapped from its human friends. turns out ART needs some help and doesn’t have any other friends.
47. Airborn by Kenneth Oppel: steampunk pirates in airships. kind of similar in vibes to the aesthetic of the leviathan series, but strictly mechanical advancements. cool worldbuilding. teenage girl scientist protagonist. first in a series.
48. The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón: book 2 in the cemetery of forgotton books series. very atmospheric. like you can almost see the fog while you read it. supernatural/elements of magical realism. helps if you read book 1
49. I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death by Maggie O’Farrell: memoir told out of chronological order. each titled with the body part that almost caused death (neck, spine, blood, lungs, etc). by definition, not a happy read, but powerful. trigger warning for the neck story for an almost abduction/assault. content warning for chronic illness/disease.
50. Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks: yes that Tom Hanks. series of short stories. some of them are connected. i can’t remember anything super upsetting, and some of them are straight up comedic. elements of the absurd. in one a group of friends goes into space. like without nasa or any organization. they just. build a rocket. and go to space.
