Whether or not Spock gets his memories back is technically up for debate.

But it is also made perfectly clear that on Vulcan Spock was taught What he is (being re-educated), and when as a part of that education he is asked about Who he is he is stumped. And later on, he learns Who he is, and a point is made to allow us to understand that development. Whether Who he is included his memories or not is never perfect clear, and Nimoy did play the character slightly differently because dying would have an impact on him, and he did show that through his performance.

But does he truly know his friends? Yes.

Does he fully understand the depth of the friendship he shares with them? Yes.

Does he feel pain when he hurts them (entirely accidentally)? Absolutely yes, to the extent that 80 years later he is still so wracked with that guilt it influences his actions.

Spock after his rebirth, you could argue, doesn’t remember all of the moments he shared with his friends prior to his death. But his death also allowed him to connect with them in ways that he had never been able to previously.

It’s very very very good, and definitely a subtextual thing (hence it being open for debate), but you can read it in the performances.

And I’d argue that the whole thing makes the Kirk Spock Bones relationship all the more powerful and important

uuuugh see i don't think that's BAD or uninteresting (in fact it's 100% the opposite) but i still just physically recoil that everything with jim and his ENTIRE LIFE ON THE ENTERPRISE become memories he only has through inference and mind melds and whatever else :'( it's good writing! and character development! and i love the cast so much so i know the acting will be perfect, no notes, but i literally feel overwhelmed with grief knowing he becomes someone different essentially living a stranger's life once he comes back :( like it just hurts my heart so much :( and if it's up for interpretation that means he won't have the "oh i remember everything now" moment that my tacky, unelevated, cheesy, campy, childish soul needs if i'm going to be asked to watch spock DIE and come BACK.

SNW Idea: “The Doctor’s Wife” but Make It Star Trek??

Of all Starfleet vessels, TOS’s NCC-1701 Enterprise is the one that is the most often directly personified as “a beautiful lady/woman/she/her”. Even more so than the NX-1701 or any iterations that come after the first NCC model, even in Kirk’s era with him aboard. After we get to the NCC-1701-A from The Voyage Home that allegory dwindles significantly.

However in SNW we haven’t seen the crew, not even Pike, not even Hemmer, refer to the Enterprise like she’s a person. Chris & La’an tell the crew “she’ll hold.” in Memento Mori, but that’s the full extent of it so far. They don’t take it to anywhere near the same level that Kirk or Scotty do. Edit: Scratch that! Erica definitely has a weird thing for the Enterprise akin to Kirk’s and Scotty’s 😂 still!

Which begs the possibility! What if the implication that the Enterprise is practically a living, breathing person became very, very literal?

What if somehow, through the usual insanity Star Trek generally creates, the Enterprise somehow becomes a human(oid) woman temporarily?

That presents a really interesting possibility with funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking implications. That Kirk and/or Scotty form a strong emotional connection with Human(oid)!Enterprise before she returns to her original form.

Not only that but we will definitely see Paul Wesley’s Kirk sprinkled throughout SNW as time goes on. Chances are Scotty will be showing up soon if not as chief engineer, lined up for a promotion.

Could you imagine Kirk making a deep connection with a woman and it turns out to be the Enterprise and he’s NEVER the wiser about it being the ship/her. He just knows he’s got an unusually sentimental attachment to the vessel before he even becomes its Captain?!

It could be something that would connect Jim to the soul of the NCC-1701 in a way that was never possible for any other Starfleet Captain. Something none of the others could or will achieve because it was ultimately an accident?! Talk about poetic cinema and reoccurring themes!

Scotty would be a narratively interesting choice too! Scotty has always treated the Enterprise with the same charming chivalry and protectiveness he treats his love interests with in TOS. Defending her honor when she’s implied to be a garbage scow. Among many other instances that reinforce the Enterprise is more than just a well-crafted ship to him.

I could really see a bittersweet shenanigans episode where a humanoid woman shows up and the Enterprise shuts down at the same time. Scotty being the first (maybe only) person to figure out the connection, possibly emotionally connect to her, but ultimately end up having to set things back to the way they were before. Thus being Scotty’s little secret because trying to explain it would be strange and difficult.

Either or both of these characters knowing/feeling on some level that the Enterprise is alive, or at least was, would be amazing commentary on moments like “now I know why it’s called she.”

Not only that, but it would make her demise all the more emotional when she finally meets her end in The Search for Spock.

I can't overstate the impact that reading Spock's World in the early 90s in my early teens impacted me as a person. It opened my eyes to philosophy that I wouldn't have come across for years otherwise, and at exactly the time when I needed it.

I've been wondering this in the years since -- the beautiful lines:

"Those who know others are intelligent

Those who know themselves have insight.

Those who master others have force

Those who master themselves have strength.

Through nonaction nothing is left undone."

are, of course, attributed to the Tao Te Ching. However, I've never found a translation with exactly this version of the verse. Were you working from a specific text? or are they your/a collaborator's translation?

I've been studying the Tao for a long time. (Long enough to know that I need to keep studying it...) So the house has a fair number of texts on the subject.

Probably my favorite is this one: R. L. Wing's translation of the Tao te ching, The Tao of Power. It came out in 1986, and I picked it up (so the price tag informs me) in one of the Easons chain of Irish bookstores. This would be where the (various) quotes used in Spock's World came from.

The one you've mentioned comes from Wing's translation of Trigram 33, "Self-Mastery":

"Those who know others are intelligent;

Those who know themselves have insight.

Those who master others have force;

Those who master themselves have strength.

Those who know what is enough are wealthy.

Those who persevere have direction.

Those who maintain their position endure.

And those who die and yet do not perish, live on.

...The "nonaction" line comes from some other trigram: I'd have to go hunting.

Meanwhile, though I trust myself to do translation in some ancient languages (mostly Latin, with some stumbling around the landscape of Aeolian Greek), when it comes to Chinese—any Chinese—I know it's best to stand away and let professionals handle it. :) ...So, plainly, I did.

Meanwhiile, I highly recommend The Tao of Power (there are lots of copies on Abebooks). It’s as much workbook as educational text, and is (graphically speaking) very handsome.

A very shocked Spock finds that prior to perishing when Vulcan was destroyed by Nero, T'Pring had a child and had officially named Spock as the father. Now faced with a homeless, orphaned and traumatised yound Vulcan boy Spock has to navigate unexpectedly becoming a parent, with the help of Jim of course 🥰 it's a sweet story with lots of endearing moments while also addressing topics like trauma and prejudice. Worth a read 🥰🖖

I have drawn a one-page comic, set in an alternate universe, where, around the time TOS is set, the Federation is attacked by a powerful enemy, that destroys and conquers everything in their path. Faced with this, Vulcans have to make a decision.

This is different from my ussual posts, but I hope you enjoy it. Live Long and Prosper.

Text and description:

1)[a panel of plain text] The Federation has been attacked by an enemy that does not respect life. They are vicious and kill without remorse. Many planets have fallen. Negotiations were futile. T'Pau, Matriarch of all Vulcan, announces to her people, the state of things.

2) [disc shaped spacecrafts attack a planet]

"We were attacked without a warning."

3)[four individuals of different species, dressed in formal clothes] "Negotiators were sent"

4)[same individuals, with their faces crossed]

"And lost."

5)[a planet, with its surface burned]

"Some planets were razed."

6)[pieces of rock floating in space]

"Some reduced to rubble."

7)[Armed soldiers, in spacesuits that cover their faces, approach a house. A city burns in the background.]

"Some were conquered, their people treated as cattle."

8)[T'Pau on a platform, with an auditorium around. There are two incense cauldrons behind her.]

"Hear me, people of Vulcan!"

"Our world is in danger, as are all the worlds to which we had sworn our loyalty as allies!"

"We are warriors!"

19)[Three panels: A middle aged Vulcan touches a weapon on the wall, then passes a sword to a teenager, the teenager dressed themselves in armor with the sword at their belt.]

"We layed our weapons down to ensure our survival, and for survival we shall now bear them again!"

20)[A disc shaped spacecraft blown up by phaser.]

"We shall fight with fire"

21)[a bloodied lirpa]

"and steel,"

22)[Kolinahru standing in a ring, holding hands.]

" and thought!"

Okay I am now home and showered and I've finished all my assignments for today so here we go! Thank you so much for the ask <3

King Radovid Saves the Day is a fic I started shortly after the last part of season 3 but have only continued recently, inspired by the thought that it could be quite convenient for Jaskier that his lover now has an army. It also features a bewildered Geralt! Here's a snippet:

Radovid holds Jaskier closer. Jaskier opens his mouth, searching for anything else to say that could possibly take the horrifyingly sad look from Radovid’s face, when— “Is anyone going to tell me what the fuck is going on?” asks Geralt. Jaskier and Radovid jump apart in equal parts surprise and automatic embarrassment. Somehow, Jaskier had completely forgotten his friend was in the room. Radovid wipes his eyes with the sleeve of his fur robe, swallows, and shakes himself a little, turning to face Geralt. “This is your witcher?” he asks. Jaskier has heard that question many times over the years, usually with derision or shame directed at one or both of him and Geralt, but rarely with such gentle curiosity, let alone with the rough voice of someone recently on the verge of tears. “He is,” says Jaskier, while Radovid takes a deep breath to compose himself more thoroughly. “It is an honor to meet you,” says Radovid to Geralt. “To have inspired such songs and such loyalty, you must be a great man.”

Jim Please Stop Almost Getting Killed is one of my first tentative forays into the Star Trek fandom! It's set after an episode in TOS s2 where Kirk almost dies and the basic premise is that Spock was a lot more worried about it than he let on. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far! Here’s a bit:

Still looking at his hands, Spock paused for a moment before speaking. “I admit that I would have found it most disagreeable if you had lost your life in that mission.” Jim smiled a little, gentle and a bit sad. “I wouldn’t have exactly been pleased with it either.” Spock continued as though Jim had not spoken. “Were you to perish, the ship would feel your absence most keenly.” Jim considered him for a long moment before, throwing caution to the winds, he spoke. “And you? Would you feel it?” For the first time in several minutes, Spock finally looked up and met Jim’s eyes. “I admit that I would have, captain.”

Also, because you’re the best, here’s a bit of the Renfri fic <3 in the name of spicing things up, it’s a song rather than prose!

I literally can’t stop thinking about how Pike is functionally a fourth S’chn T’gai sibling narratively speaking.

Not only that but he’s the eldest brother Sybok never got the chance to be, and I am hoping that we get to see a Spock & Sybok & Pike dynamic in future SNW stories cuz… man.

He serves as an absolutely crucial mentor figure/healing force in both Michael AND Spock’s lives, both of whom are in some of their darkest hours.

In being there for both Michael and Spock, being patient and believing deeply in both of them. That gives the two of them the space they need to heal their own sibling relationship.

Now the beautifully tragic part, taking Pike’s brotherly/paternal nature with Spock into account

Every single one of Spock’s older siblings, surrogate, adopted, and bastard all end up sacrificing themselves to save him.

Michael goes to the future to prevent Control from wiping out all biological life, forced to leave Spock behind.

Pike deliberately seals his fate, burdened with the knowledge that if he succeeds in saving himself in any way, Spock dies.

Sybok perishes buying Spock enough time to escape when the entity he had hoped was God turned out to be malevolent.
