BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the British-born mega-talented multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter John Ford. He’s best-known in America for his lead role in their singles “Lay Down” and “Part of The Union” and for the New Wave band The Monks—also look up the band Hudson Ford, who made a string of brilliant albums in the 70s. As a hired gun John has worked with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Roy Harper, Jimi Hendrix, King Crimson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, Steppenwolf, Rick Wakeman, Frank Zappa, and many others, and in recent years he’s collaborated with Ian Lloyd of Stories. I’ve become of fan of every recording I’ve heard that John was involved in, and for years I’ve been taken with his song “Heavy Disguise,” a song for when politics encroach on people of faith. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JI5r_8AbKs The lyrics came from his observations while attending political meetings, a bit bittersweet but forthtelling, and with a jovial set of chords and melody. I heard the song when it was new (on the Strawbs GRAVE NEW WORLD LP). I always enjoyed singing it, but I couldn’t master the guitar part until recently, so here it is, live in our parlor. Gli amanti delle letteratura gotica, affascinati dalla tragedia non rimarranno delusi da questo romanzo scritto nel 1796 da Matthew Gregory Lewis. Possiede tutte le caratteristiche che segnano questo stile di letteratura: l’amore impossibile, gli uomini che cadono nei loro stessi peccati, fantasmi e creature dannate dell’oltretomba che si manifestano in Terra e le vite segrete quanto tormentate che si aggirano in un convento apparentemente tranquillo.

Il protagonista è (come suggerito dal titolo) il monaco, chiamato Ambrosio che vive recluso volontariamente nel convento. Famoso e ammirato per essere considerato un uomo santo, vive senza aver commesso peccato e ne è profondamente orgoglioso. Cosa succede tuttavia, quando nemmeno i pesanti muri del convento riescono a tenere fuori le tentazioni del mondo?

“In che sta il merito della tua vantata virtù, Quali tentazioni hai dominato? ” (citazione nel libro)

Questa è una frase chiave del libro pronunciata da uno dei personaggi del romanzo rivolto al monaco. Con queste parole gli si chiede di riflettere: lui è davvero un uomo santo per non aver mai commesso un peccato oppure è un uomo che semplicemente non ha avuto la possibilità di commetterlo? È facile non peccare quando non c’è n’è la possibilità ma difficile è non venirne sedotti quando si presenta l’occasione. Il monaco non riuscirà ad affrontare questa fatale difficoltà quando per la prima volta conosce la lussuria. La storia narra appunto del suo lento decadimento nel peccato quando ne viene sedotto.

Non mancherà un finale a sorpresa ma lascio a voi il divertimento nello scoprirlo.

14th or the 16th May 1818, death of English novelist Matthew Gregory Lewis, often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, due to his Gothic horror story ‘The Monk’, which was published in 1796, and was influenced by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, published in 1794. ‘The Monk’ brought Lewis immediate literary success, condemnation due to some of its immoral content, and accolades from Lord Byron, and the Marquis de Sade. In the summer of 1816 Lewis visited Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley at the Villa Diodati in Geneva, Switzerland, and recounted five ghost stories to the gathering. Percy Shelley had read and been influenced by ‘The Monk’, as a young man, writing his own Gothic novel, ‘Zastrozzi’ in 1810. All books shown contain a reproduction of the original title page with added original illustration influenced by the story. They are made from actual salvaged antique books, with the pages fixed in place so that they can be hung on a wall for a unique display.
