Social Class Distinctions

In chapter two in The House of the Spirits, we see the distinction in social classes when Esteban becomes the patrón of Tres Marías. The poor inhabitants of Tres Marías lacked basic human necessities, like balanced diets and clothes. Not only did they lack essential necessities, but they also didn’t receive an education. Esteban noticed that the inhabitants of Tres Marías were uneducated and took advantage of them. Another distinction that separates the classes is how Esteban lives comfortably in his renovated house while the native residents live in run-down shacks on farms.

Toxic Masculinity

A second theme that is prevalent in the novel is toxic masculinity. Esteban believes that he has power over everyone in Tres Marías, especially the women, because he’s the patrón. Not only does he rape the women in the town, but he also leaves his sister to take care of their dying mother. He believes that men should not have to subject to the tasks that women normally handled.

Inferiority of Women

The unjust treatment of women goes hand-in-hand with toxic masculinity because men thought women to be inferior. In the second chapter, Esteban states, “If women don’t know that two and two are four, how are they going to be able to handle a scalpel? Their duty is motherhood and the home.” Like most men during this time, Esteban believed that women do not deserve the same political opportunities as men because their place is at home with the children.

I’ll start with The House Of The Spirits. I read this back in 2012 and loved it and have recently been meaning to pick it up again. Then I saw a used copy being given away at work so I took advantage and grabbed it!! It’s a family saga of triumphs and tragedies and I’m really looking forward to re-reading it again. Next up - Waiting For The Night Song. It’s been described as a love song to the natural beauty around us (okay, SOLD!) a call to fight for what we believe in and a reminder that the truth will always rise. This moving novel about friendships formed in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets looks so intriguing! Finally, Dog Rose Dirt which I’ve had my eye on since it was released. Serial killer Michael Reave, known as the Red Wolf, has been locked in Belmarsh prison for over 20 years for the brutal and ritualistic murders of countless women. Ex-journalist Heather Evans returns to her childhood home after her mother’s inexplicable suicide to find hundreds of letters between her mother and Reave. So, I was planning to do a post today of books I had read and loved from South America (for next month’s #readtheworld21 challenge), but when I went to pull them I realized I had lent away too many of my faves. So instead, the stack of books I will be pulling from for my September TBR. Five books of fiction from South America, four of which are #womenintranslation! One book of Latin American history. Two from Chile, one from Brazil, two from Argentina (Cortázar spent a lot of time in Europe, as well). Two of these books are new to my shelves, the rest have been there for a while. There’s no rush in becoming the You that can one day offer something great to this world. Give yourself permission to hang out on the tree of life with no agenda. Smile into the sunlight of time. However much time that is… you’ll know. Live simply, quietly, and deliberately for a while. Work in a tea house, a garden nursery, somewhere peaceful. Read 70 or 80 books in a year. Swim. Hike. Learn the names of plants. Learn how to meditate. Make art for arts sake! For no other purpose than to feel creation flowing through you. BE. Just be. There’s no virtue in productivity without soul behind it, without meaning. And it takes time to understand life and its meaning relative to each of us. It takes time to have the experiences that will build character and direct passion. The heights of awareness can only reach in proportion to the depths of experience. In the self lies the real education. In the awakened Self lies the gift we offer the world.

Clara the Badass/Rebel

Not only does Clara have psychic abilities, but she also is unapologetically herself. She does not care what other people have to say about her or her unique ability. In fact, even when her father tried to conceal/suppress her powers, it only made her foresee into the future more.  

 Another reason why Clara is amazing is because she has Esteban wrapped around her finger. In their marriage, Clara is the one with all the “power”, both literally and figuratively, because she could ask Esteban to do anything for her and he would do it.  Also, in the beginning of their relationship, Clara made the first move. Instead of Esteban asking her to marry him, she asked him first. This is still considered unconventional in today’s world, so this was completely unheard of back then.

Lastly, Clara sometimes chooses not to speak. Despite her family’s efforts to get her to talk, she does not budge. When she finally decides to speak, she to tells them that she’s marrying her dead sister’s fiancé.

No foundational letters today as I am running a bit behind. But I am committed to finishing the challenge on time. This was a book I recently read for a book exchange. I would not have picked up this book on my own so it was a departure from my 'usual'. It was a good read which weaved realism and magic together. I also learnt a little about the political environment in Chile. #isabelallende #thehouseofthespirits
