It was less than two weeks after your conversation with Mario that you and Sid were traveling to Los Angeles for the All Star game. Geno and Anna were supposed to be with you, but because of an injury, they had to back out. It was better for him to rest up anyhow. For Sid, it was more work than fun, though he did have a more carefree attitude than when he's normally on the ice. The two of you did sneak in some nice alone time over the few days.
Once you were back in Pittsburgh, it was business as normal. Well, maybe normal wouldn't be the right word for you, as you were busy helping with the Stadium series game that would take place at the end of February against the Flyers. Your hours were a little later when you were in town, which Sid didn't mind as he just spent extra time on the ice or watching films while he waited for you. You insisted that you could just take separate cars, but he wouldn't hear of it. It was really quite cute of him.
The days leading up to the game were packed. The guys were doing media and squeezing in practices with their new equipment, while you worked behind the scenes with the rest of the crew setting things up. You wanted Heinz Field to feel just like PPG Arena did for them. The weather had everyone in a tither as Pittsburgh had got a bit of a warm front. Days leading up to the game saw temperatures in the seventies which was almost unheard of, for a February in Pennsylvania. In fact, on the day of the family skate, you were all literally wearing jeans and lightweight sweaters as you stood around watching the guys practice.
"Will you hold Scar for me?" Vero asked. You were watching the guys practice with the ladies today, instead of by the bench. It was a rare occurrence that you got to take a game in with them, so it was a nice change of pace. She handed baby Scarlett off to you while she bent down and put on Estelle's skates.
"Hello, sweetness," you said to the one-and-a-half-year-old, kissing her little cheeks in the process. "Do you see daddy out there?" You pointed out where Marc Andre was and Scarlett smiled.
"Hi, daddy!" She yelled, but you weren't entirely sure he could hear her, as he was all the way down in net. "Unc Sid!" She exclaimed when Sidney came by and tapped on the glass.
"Hi Scar!" He waved at her then gave you a look. One you weren't entirely sure you'd ever seen, before skating away leaving you to wonder what was going through his head. Practice ended soon thereafter and you all joined the guys out on the ice. Though most of them shed their pads due to the heat of the afternoon sun.
"Ice looked a little slushy," you commented to Sid when he skated over to you.
"It's not bad. They said the temperature's supposed to drop tonight and tomorrow so we'll be ok. Come on." He grabbed your hand pulling you out onto the ice with him. It was something you still weren't comfortable doing. Sid could literally skate circles around anyone, while you still had to concentrate if you wanted to go backward. He recognized that and always made sure he held onto you so that you wouldn't fall. "You looked good out there." He said offhandedly as you made your way around the now shiny surface of the ice.
"Huh? I wasn't doing anything. I'm pretty sure I should be saying that to you."
"That's not what I meant."
"Obviously," you said hitting him playfully and losing your balance at the same time. Sid righted you with ease so that to the casual onlooker they never would've seen you stumble.
"I meant holding Scarlett."
"Oh well, she's easy to love that's for sure. I'm going to miss them when they go." With the expansion team coming to Vegas, it was already widely known within the team that Flower would be the member they would choose. It was crushing, not only to you but to Sid as well. Your friendship with the Fleury's was one of the things you both treasured most; they were the reason you were with Sid right now. And while they would always be some of your best friends' things wouldn't be the same in Pittsburgh without them.
"I know," Sid replied wistfully. "But we've still got them for now." You skated around a few more times, before he let you go, only so that he could wrap his arms around your midsection and skate with you from behind. It was definitely intimate and you were surprised with all the media around that Sid was into such a public display of affection. Sure there had been the parades, but usually, he tried to keep your relationship out of the public eye if he could. "I just think you really looked good." He whispered in your ear.
"You've seen me in this outfit before."
"Not that, you know…" You had to crane your neck back to look at him, but you noticed he was turning a bit red and it had nothing to do with the unseasonably warm temperatures. "Holding Scarlett." He finally spit out. "It makes me think about having our own."
"OH!" The word came out a little louder than you intended. Of course, Sid had confessed that he wanted kids with you. It just seemed like something that was further away in the future and not something that he'd been thinking about recently.
"I know you're going to tell me it's too soon, and maybe you're right. I just can't help but think about it on days like today." You looked around then, watching all the guys skate with their significant others, some with kids while others had kids on the way. You could see the allure. As the two of you continued to glide around the ice, you let your mind wander to what it would be like. It was easy to picture, especially after watching Sid this summer with his Little Penguins camp. He'd be holding your son's or daughter's hands, much like Flower was doing now with Estelle, helping them navigate the ice. When Sid's hands tightened around your waist you couldn't stop yourself from wondering what it would feel like to be growing his child inside you. You found yourself relaxing more into Sid's embrace as you daydreamed about your future.
"It's definitely a nice picture," you finally sighed, letting him know that you weren't opposed to the idea.
"Yeah, yeah it is." His voice took on a dreamy quality and you knew he was imagining the same thing as you. It seemed like one minute you were caught up in your little fantasy and the next you guys were having to leave the ice and it was back to reality. Not that your reality was a bad one, you still had Sid and for now, that's all you needed.
Sid was right temperatures definitely cooled down. By game time the following day, it was barely thirty degrees and falling. You were bundled up in a coat with the team logo on it along with a matching tossle cap on your head. Sid had been mad that you hadn't worn the one all the ladies got with their guys' number on it, but you had insisted that when you were on the clock you were rooting for the entire team and not just him. At the moment you were wishing you had it so that you could put it on top of your current one. Your teeth were chattering and you kept bouncing on the balls of your feet to keep you warm.
Midway through the first Sid scored, which had you jumping up and down and cheering along with the team as well as the thousands of fans in the stadium. It did little to help get you warm and you were practically running to the locker room tunnel by end of the first. You grabbed a cup of hot tea while the players went over the first period and where they could make improvements. It went pretty much the same way in the second, even though Nick Bonino scored early the Flyers were able to cut the lead in half with a goal from Jakub Voracek. Again, you raced off to get warm as soon as the horn sounded.
Your feet were numb by the time Cully scored a goal early in the third, and though the Flyers scored on a power play, Chad Ruhwedel sealed the Pens victory with over five minutes left in play. The stadium erupted with the win, though it did little to warm you up. You stayed long enough to watch the team skate around in their little victory lap, then headed back down to the nice warm locker room.
Of course, Sid had to do media, which meant you were there even longer. He was afforded the luxury of a nice hot shower before the two of you headed home. "Can you please turn the heat up?" you whined once you were in the car. "I'm freezing."
"It was a bit cold out there, eh?" Sid commented as he turned the heat on your side of the vehicle to max.
"Ya think? I thought I was going to freeze to death when the snow started to fly."
"Babe, it's all part of outdoor hockey." He grabbed one of your hands in his. "Fuck, you are cold. You should've worn thermals or something."
"Trust me I will next time. I think it's just worse because of how beautiful it was yesterday."
"Well, as soon as we get home, we'll get you in the tub."
"Uh, yes, please." The ride through the city, while mostly traffic free, seemed endless.
"Head upstairs, babe and I'll bring you up a cup of tea as soon as I get rid of my gear." Not having to be told twice, you made your way up to your shared master bath and started running the water. You hated stripping out of your clothes, as it felt like the only warmth your body had at the moment but as soon as your toes touched the steaming water, you sighed as the warmth heated your skin. You were fully immersed up to your neck by the time Sid came up with a steaming mug full of tea. "Better?"
"A little," you answered taking a sip of the drink he'd prepared perfectly for you before setting it back down on the ledge of the tub. "Still a bit chilly."
"Well in that case." Sid started to strip out of his clothes. Divesting himself of his suit that he'd worn to the game. He folded it over the chair you used to put your makeup on, so that it didn't get any wrinkles, then made his way over to you and the tub. "Scooch up, babe." You did and he scooted in behind you, easing you back against him once he was comfortable in the water. His arms wrapped around you instantly and you felt engulfed in his heat. "This better?"
"Mmm much." You were completely content wrapped up in your boyfriend's arms with the water lapping around you both, so you rested your head against his chest. "You played really well tonight," you mused shutting your eyes and just giving yourself over to the warmth that was Sid.
"It was a lot of fun. I love playing outdoors. It's so authentic." Only Sid would put it like that, but you knew what he meant. "Though I wish you would've dressed warmer baby."
"I'm fine now." You took another long sip of tea, the temperature perfect.
Sid kissed your temple. "Good, can't have you getting sick on me."
"God no, I'll have to sleep in the guest room, if that happens."
"Why?"
"I'm not going to be responsible for getting the star player sick." You told him, turning your head so that you could look him in the eye. "You will not be missing a game because of me."
"I'd still probably end up missing a game because I wouldn't be able to sleep without you in our bed." His arms tightened around you, almost as if you were going to run off to the guest room right then. "But we're not worrying about that now, because we are definitely sleeping in the same bed tonight." His lips captured yours then, stealing your breath away and heating your body all the way to your core. You could feel his erecting grow against you as the kiss went on. It was nothing to reach behind you and wrap your fingers around his length. He moaned into your mouth, before gently sucking on your bottom lip as he broke the kiss. "You know two can play that game." His hand stole down your stomach and slipped between your folds, the water making it easy for him to caress you there. Your hand stuttered on his cock as he slid two fingers into you. Sid took the opportunity to grab your wrist with his free hand so that you could no longer manipulate him as you liked. "Lean your head back and enjoy this for a bit."
"But…"
"We'll get to that." He told you as he settled you against him once again. He shimmied his legs so that they were in between yours but only for a moment so that he could spread yours wide; your legs now splayed on either side of his. Sid's fingers continued to toy with your pussy, alternating between pumping in and out of you and rubbing circles on your clit, while his other hand tweaked your nipples into taut little peaks. Before you knew it you were panting with need, the chill of the evening game completely forgotten as Sid stoked a fire deep within you. His lips came down on the nape of your neck, his tongue driving you wild just as his fingers were. It was all too much as the water gently lapped at your skin. You felt your body gently rise into his touch, yet he held you firm working you towards that peak you craved. It didn't take long for your orgasm to hit. It washed over you like a wave cresting on the sand as your body trembled, this time not from the cold but the pleasure of Sid's touch. "You're so fucking sexy when you cum." His warm breath sent a shiver down your spine.
You were so sated you almost didn't want to move, but then you wanted him to experience the same ecstasy that you'd just felt. "We should…" you went to tell him that you should move to the bed but Sid had other plans.
"We'll be fine here, just kneel for a second." Your legs were already on either side of him, so it wasn't hard. He adjusted himself a bit, sitting more upright in the tub, before bending his knees slightly for you to lean against. You turned your head to the side to see him stroke himself a couple times, before lining himself up with your pussy. "Now just come back a little." You did as instructed; your pussy engulfing his cock as you basically sat reverse cowgirl on him. With his knees bent you leveraged yourself against them and started to ride his cock. "Fuck baby, you feel so good." His hands were on your hips making sure you wouldn't slip in the tub, but controlling your pace as well.
Water sloshed against the sides of the tub, some of it spilling over the sides. "Oh shit," you moaned out knowing that you were making a mess of the bathroom floor.
Sid could see where your thoughts were going. "Forget it, (Y/N). We'll get it later." He accentuated his words by thrusting up deep inside you. The action making you groan with desire. "That feel good, baby?"
"Yes," you cried out as he hit your g-spot again. "Right there," you panted and he hit the spot over and over again until you were convulsing around him in your second climax.
"Jesus, (Y/N)," Sid moaned as your pussy gripped him like a vice. The grip he had on your hips tightened as he rammed into your cunt. He was so close to falling off the edge and cumming with you but he wanted to hold off, make it last longer, give you one more orgasm before he sought his own pleasure. Sid slowed his thrusts then, as you relaxed momentarily against his knees. "So fucking beautiful." It took you a moment to catch your breath before you started to move again. His thrusts weren't as deep as before, giving you a moment's reprieve before he went at it again. You knew Sid, knew he could keep up this leisurely pace all night if he wanted. The water was cooling though, and even though your body was still on fire after two orgasms you had no wish to be cold again. It was then that you decided to move your hips, rocking in a motion that you knew would drive him wild. And it did. It wasn't long before he was bucking up into you again. The water going everywhere now. Some of it even hitting his designer suit which rested across the room on the chair. "Fuck, (Y/N)," he hissed out and you could tell he wouldn't last much longer at this pace. He let one hand snake around to your clit. His fingers applying just the right amount of pressure there, as he rubbed circles into the little nub.
"Sid, I'm gonna…"
"Yes, baby, yes," he groaned on the verge of hitting his peak as well. You were both there with a few thrusts. His hot cum filling you up as you quaked around him. The pleasure so intense you swore you saw stars. Sid collapsed against the back of the tub and while you wanted to follow, the position you were in did not make it that easy. It took a little maneuvering on both your parts, but soon you were back to lounging against Sid.
"We should get out." The water was definitely cooled now and this time you shivered from it.
"You still cold?"
"A little."
"Well, let's get you in bed then." The towel you had laid out was completely soaked, so you just laid it across the floor as you moved to get out of the tub. "Careful," Sid warned as you stepped out onto the shiny marble floor. You moved quickly yet cautiously to the cabinet and grabbed both of you a towel while laying down a few more to soak up the water.
You'd just finished wrapping the fluffy white towel around your body when Sid scooped you up and headed towards the bedroom. "Sid, stop! I need to clean up that mess."
"It'll dry." He must have been anticipating how the night would go for the bed was already turned down as he placed you in the middle of the mattress. He scooted in behind you, discarding his towel in one swift motion, before sweeping the covers over both of you. His hands made quick work of ridding you of the wet cloth that was helping you dry. "They say body heat is the fastest way to warm someone up."
"Hmm, is that so," you said turning in his embrace.
"Mmmhmm. I'm sure I read it somewhere."
"I'm sure you did. I'm just wondering what else this book said."
His hands were roaming up and down your back and gliding across the globes of your ass. "Oh, lots more."
You kissed his neck wanting to return the favor he had given you a while ago, then you moved to his chest before saying, "such as?" You continued your path downward over Sid's abs.
"I'm sure there was…" he sucked in a breath as you placed a warm kiss on his pelvis. "Fuck I can't think of a word."
You grinned up at him from beneath the covers. "Let me see if I can make you forget all together." Sid lost all train of thought as your lips connected with his cock. The night continued on like that for a few more hours before the two of you were so sated you could do nothing but sleep.

You hadn’t gotten a chance to bake in a while. Work always got in the way and your free time was spent relaxing from the amount of work you had. So you had done it. You had worked day in, day out to get an entire week off. Not only that, you had planned to meet up with your old school friends in the middle of that week.  Up to that day you had been making small muffins and even bread, since everyone was coming over to your place. Of course, it wasn’t only your place - you were currently living with your long time partner, Katsuki. The two of you had been a bit on and off since UA, but had finally moved in together after so long. One thing had never changed during all those years, he still loved to tease you when you baked. Baking had been your hobby since you were a kid and, instead of putting his amazing cooking skills to use and help you, he opted for standing beside you and doing everything he could to distract you. Though many would find this act annoying, you found it quite endearing. He wasn’t being mean to you, on the contrary actually. Katsuki tried to do everything he could to make you flustered, just to see how much you could take before you were bound to mess something up. This “distracting” could be anything from suddenly really wanting to dance with you to having to kiss every inch of your body for some unknown reason.
It was the day when everyone was supposed to come over and you were of course planning on making your famous macaroons. To do that you decided to get up early, since your guests would be coming over around four. This idea wasn’t something that Katsuki enjoyed. Not only did he have to spend time with a bunch of people when he could’ve just spent the day off he took with his significant other. He also had to wake up to an empty bed that morning, which according to him was entirely unacceptale. Katsuki decided what he was going to do as soon as his eyes opened to see you walk out the bedroom door what he was going to do.
“You’re wearing jeans at home?”, he questioned as soon as he walked out of the bedroom and saw you in the kitchen. “It’s just so that I don’t have to change later.”, you looked down at your black jeans, “They look okay right?” “You look great, babe... but why jeans.”, he sighed and wrapped his arms loosely around your frame. “It’s not that uncomfortable you know.”, you said and kept mixing your batter that you had prepared the night before. Katsuki’s arms stayed wrapped around you as his chest pressed up against your back. His chin later found your shoulder and placed itself there. “You didn’t have to get up now too, you took the day off.”, you smiled slightly at the memory of you having to beg him to take the day off for today. “... the bed gets too cold without you.”, he muttered. “Are you kidding me? You’re like a personal heater! How can my lack of presence make it cold?”, you chuckled, “If you mean that you missed me you could’ve just said that.” “Well, I didn’t mean that.”, he huffed and took a step away from you. “Lies.”, you teased and pointed your finger at him, “... I missed you too, either way.” You enjoyed seeing the way that his ears went slightly red at your comment. He could easily hide his facial expressions and even the blush on his cheeks, but his ears always went red when he was flustered. “It’s nice to have a week off so that I can spend all the time I can with you.”, you admitted and went back to your baking.
When you had almost finished the macaroons the guests were supposed to arrive in half an hour. Katsuki had been cleaning around the house, all whilst insisting that he really didn’t care if the guests found the apartment messy. However, when you were putting together the finishing the last few heartshaped macaroons before you could put them in the oven he had just gotten out of the shower.  “Katsuki, could you help me put some powdered sugar on the cake I made yesterday?”, you asked him. “You know, you really do too much sometimes.”, he commented whilst getting the powdered sugar out of the cupboard. “I like baking, otherwise I wouldn’t do this.”, you explained. “Jeez this shit really sticks to you easily.”, he said as he opened the packet. “Yeah, be careful you won’t ever get it off that t-shirt - especially since it’s a dark color.” If you had turned around at that moment you would’ve seen the gears in Katsuki’s head turning as you said that - but alas, you were left unaware of his newly found idea. Once he had finished decorating the cake he set the plan into work. “Hey baby...”, he said sweetly and wrapped his arms around you from behind once again, “... you know they won’t be here for a while...” “No, Katsuki.”, you said sternly. “Please, baby?”, he asked and placed a few soft kisses against your neck. “... I know what you-... don’t try me, Bakugo Katsuki.”, you stammered out as your face started getting more and more red. “You’re really cute when you get so flustered over the smallest things.”, he smiled and pressed a kiss to your cheek. As he walked away from you he smacked your ass and you let out a yelp in surprise. “Hey! You ruined this one!”, you pointed to the now ruined macaroon. “All the other ones are perfect, honey.”, he assured you with a grin. You huffed and returned to your baking, unaware of the powdered sugar print, in the form of a hand, on your pants.
When the first guests arrived you were still finishing up putting your pastries on plates, so you asked Katsuki to welcome them. Once you were finished with the last plate you carried them out to the kitchen table where some people were already seated, talking, while a few others were walking around, looking at your decour. “That looks amazing, Y/N!”, Uraraka complimented as she sat down. “Thank you, I haven’t been out of the kitchen since my break started.”, you smiled, “It’s nice to bake stuff again.” “Do you need any help taking out the rest of the plates?”, Katsuki asked, already walking past you towards the kitchen. “Yeah sure there are a few left.”, you turned around and were about to start walking when someone gasped. “Is that a handprint?”, Mina asked and hurridely walked towards you. “Huh?”, you tried turning to her but she kept you still. “That’s way to big to be your hand...”, she commented. “I don’t see the big deal...”, Shoto said from across the room. “Clearly, Mina is insinuating that someone grabbed Y/N’s bottom.”, Iida explained. “Don’t say bottom, Iida.”, Kaminari groaned. “I’m putting my detective spectacles on!”, Mina pretended to put on glasses, as Katsuki walked back into the room.  You were stood there, frozen, while looking at your boyfriend with an angry look. Of course he would do such a thing! While everyone looked at Katsuki putting down the plates, Mina had little to no patience. As soon as the plates were on the table she grabbed Katsuki’s arm. “Oi! Watch it, pinky!”, he exclaimed. “Just lemme borrow your hand real quick!”, she argued back. An annoyed sigh escaped your lips but before you could speak you felt a hand carress your ass, again. Mina had pressed Katsuki’s hand on the handprint to see if it would match. And of course it matched! It was his! As if the man you had decided to live with couldn’t annoy you more he decided to gently squeeze. “Hey!”, you yelped and turned around. “It was him!”, Mina revelled in her findings. “Yeah, who else would it even be dumbass?”, Katsuki scoffed and went to sit down when someone grabbed his arm again, “What?!” “... Katsuki...”, your grip tightened around his bicep, “You did this?” He gulped.
Let’s just say... he might be one of the best heroes in the country, but he’ll never stop being scared of you when you’re angry.

Can we have some yandere Erwin?? You’re right that he’d be so hot as a yandere and people don’t write for him enough 😩
a/n: yandere erwin is……….. OOOOOOOOOOOOOF . also this takes place before the anime’s story
Tumblr media
“Beloved.”
‘Ignore him.’
“I only wish to speak with you. Would you do that for me?”
‘Just keep looking away. He’ll leave me alone eventually.’
Your own labored breathing betrays the calm disposition you’re trying to portray. Even at your own visible weakness, you’re unable to fault yourself. None of this was your fault, there’s nothing you can do better.
This is all his fault. A man you used to admire, who ignited passion in your downtrodden spirit. Now, the flames were extinguished, replaced with bitter ash and a memory of what used to be.
You can’t see him, but you hear Erwin sigh. With your eyes shut in defiance, and head turned, it’s all you can do to keep up your little game. In the recesses of your mind, you wonder if Erwin is delusional enough to ever hurt you. If he was willing to kidnap you, would he go further?
Weight dips onto the bed you were currently secured against, ropes digging into your sensitive skin. Erwin had lamented at seeing you in such a state, saying he would’ve preferred your freedom. But that you were being disobedient, and he would respond accordingly.
Your breath hitches as warmth surrounds you, the distant scent of his cologne making you dizzy.
Strong arms wrap around your shivering frame. For a moment, you cautiously open your eyes. Erwin’s head was dipped, resting snugly into the crevice of your neck. His hair was in slight disarray, as it would get after long nights of paperwork and meetings.
Feeling constricted by his arms around you, you helplessly writhe to get out of his grip. You’re met with him lifting his face, intense azure eyes meeting yours. Even now, you could never guess what he was thinking.
“You’re still acting like this, princess?” he murmurs, a knowing frown on his face. You don’t humor him with a response, instead, glaring at him with the most hatred you could muster.
For a moment, Erwin recedes back, still sitting next to you. You begin to wonder if you had won this little battle, if your actions truly struck a chord. But regret begins to seep in when he closes his eyes, a small smile forming on his face.
“You’ve always been so stubborn, [First].” Erwin acknowledges, his large hand reaching out to your face. Gritting your teeth, your stomach lurches as he delicately runs his hand over your cheek, your skin flushing at the intimate touch.
Taking in your appearance, Erwin pauses his movements. His eyes bore into your own uncomfortably, the gears in his head visibly turning. That was never a good sign.
“Your friend, Anna,” Erwin begins, eyeing you carefully as he sees you wince. “She mourned you for the longest time. Even to this day, her head hangs low during training.”
The facade of indifference you held begins to crumble, the mentions of your beloved best friend stinging painfully. Erwin undoubtedly notices, continuing his words.
“I’m sure it’s hard for you to tell how much time has passed since you’ve been here. I’ll tell you this, our next expedition is nearing… and we have new spots in the vanguard.”
At this, a sudden wave of sickness overtakes you.
‘No, no, he wouldn’t- he wouldn’t think about-”
It’s a chilling, lifeless smile on his sharp face. “I’ve thought of placing your dear friend in one of those new spots. Think of it as…” Erwin pauses, as if he was looking for the right word.
“Think of it as discipline.”
“No!” you exclaim, speaking to him for the first time in weeks. Tears sting your eyes, your vision growing blurry.
“Erwin, y-you can’t. She wouldn’t survive. You know she wouldn’t survive. You’d kill her,” you begin to plead, biting your lip harshly. Struggling with your the restraints above your head, your wince at the sensation of your previous wounds rubbing against the rope. “Please… I’m begging you.”
Sniffling pathetically, the thought of your best friend in the jaws of a titan comes to mind. Gory flashes of violence shuffling through your head, anxiety shooting through your veins. Helplessly, you continue your worthless struggle at freeing yourself.
Erwin’s mouth is set in a straight line. He presses a hand to your shoulder, in a cruel attempt to comfort your panicking form.
“Princess, didn’t you listen closely? I said I was thinking about it,” he reassures, his thumb massaging circles into your skin. “I hate seeing you distressed. I’m not a cruel man, [First]. There are ways of swaying my mind.”
He begins to approach you once again, face growing closer to your own. He wipes away your tears, a sick expression of love adorning his features.
“Do you understand me, [First]?”
At this, all you can offer is a meek head nod. All strength had left your body, replaced with fear and sorrow.
“In that case, be a good girl for me from now on.”

The 1990s Moments That Changed the Way We Think About Food
By: Anna Hezel Illustrations: Ellie Skrzat
The ’90s were a decade of information, SnackWell’s, and sun-dried tomatoes on everything. Here are eight events that shaped our opinions about cooking and eating.
1. The Launch of the TV Food Network In April of 1993, a young and scrappy Food Network launched with a debut lineup of French chef Jacques Pepin, writer David Rosengarten, Mrs. Fields founder Debbi Fields, and Emeril Lagasse, a little-known Louisiana restaurateur in his mid-30s with only a handful of prior television appearances under his belt.
Dorie Greenspan, who worked at the network during its launch as a consultant and producer, remembers it as a pioneering time in the unexplored realm of food television. On the TASTE Podcast, Greenspan recalled the head of programming at the time saying, “We’re going to make somebody a star, but we don’t know who that person will be.” It swiftly became clear that Emeril was that star.
In addition to the runaway hits, like Essence of Emeril, there were misgivings during the launch. “This was really a startup in every sense of the word,” she told me. “We made some terrible mistakes. We couldn’t figure out a bunch of things. We tried doing a call-in show, which seemed revolutionary. We were learning.”
The only model the network had at the time for programming about cooking was public television—shows like James Beard’s I Love to Eat and Julia Child’s The French Chef. But the move to cable meant a move toward the mainstream. “I don’t think you can underestimate the impact of that,” says Ruth Reichl. “That’s the moment that food really stopped being the provenance of the elites and became part of popular culture. Children watched it and were interested in chefs, and chefs became cool in a way that they hadn’t before.”
2. Fat Is Bad, But Everything Else Is Good At the tail end of the ’80s, a few influential government reports were published, recommending that Americans consume less fat. Americans internalized this as a directive that it was OK to consume as many calories as they wanted, as long as those calories weren’t coming from fat. A zany infomercial nutritionist named Susan Powter encouraged Americans to fill their shopping carts with cereal and low-fat chips, and SnackWell’s were born, promising unlimited amounts of dessert with no health repercussions.
Lay’s launched one of the most famous product missteps in the history of American consumerism. WOW chips, introduced in 1998, promised the same potato chip flavor with only one gram of fat per serving—a feat made possible by frying in a synthetic fat substitute called Olestra. Almost as soon as the chips hit the market, accounts started to pour in of horrible stomach woes caused by the chips. The FDA famously used the phrase “anal leakage” to describe the side effects, leading to one of the grossest and most memorable PR disasters in the history of packaged foods.
3. Sushi Goes Mainstream By the ’90s, sushi had existed in the United States for more than three decades, but this was the moment when it really caught on, especially as Japanese companies opened offices in U.S. cities. “It all started when Sony bought Columbia Pictures in 1989 and the entire West Coast went mad for sushi,” speculates Alan Richman, who was the restaurant critic at GQ at the time.
Everyone started opening sushi restaurants, including Robert DeNiro with a then little-known chef named Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, and in turn, sushi evolved from a rarefied luxury that one could only find in coastal cities to a casual, affordable treat that happened to fit perfectly into the era’s philosophy about nutrition. And then grocery stores started to catch on, stocking their refrigerator cases with plastic trays of California and spicy tuna rolls.
4. The Dawn of Online Recipes When we talk about the kind of rapid globalization that happened in the ’90s, it’s hard to avoid talking about the Internet, which shattered our spatial relationships to one another by making it as easy to talk to someone in Australia as it was to talk to the kid in your social studies class who lived down the street.
As the Internet became woven into our daily lives through services like Prodigy and America Online, it was only a matter of time before this rapidly growing technology became a way to disseminate the recipes and cooking advice that you could previously find only in magazines and cookbooks.
In 1995, Condé Nast launched Epicurious, a forward-thinking database of recipes compiled from some of the company’s food and travel magazines, including Bon Appétit and Gourmet. By the end of the decade, blogging platforms like Blogger and Xanga had emerged, paving the way for a generation of self-publishing food bloggers, like David Lebovitz in 1999, and Heidi Swanson, Pim Techamuanvivit, and Clotilde Dusoulier in the early 2000s.
5. A New Era for Restaurant Critics “I think the ’90s were the great era of restaurants in America,” says Alan Richman. The economy was strong, people had money to spend, and newspapers and magazines had budgets to send their critics to eat out and report on the latest trends in food. Fine-dining stalwarts in New York, like Le Bernardin, Daniel, and Jean-Georges, were thriving. But it was also a time when critics like Robert Sietsema at the Village Voice and Ruth Reichl at The New York Times started to clue diners in to the fact that “eating out” didn’t always have to mean French restaurants with white tablecloths.
“I was interested in talking about the way real people ate,” says Reichl. “I felt like restaurant reviews in The New York Times had been geared to a very small group of wealthy white people. And I thought everybody should go to restaurants.”
When Reichl reviewed her first Korean restaurant, Kang Suh, in 1993, three separate local Korean newspapers from New York reached out to her for interviews. When she wrote about a soba restaurant called Honmura An that same year, it caused a flap among readers who weren’t used to seeing “a little Japanese noodle shop” receive three stars.
6. NAFTA Reshapes California’s Food Landscape In 1994, NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was signed, formalizing a trade agreement among Canada, Mexico, and the United States. As Tina Vasquez writes, the agreement was greeted with lots of anti-immigrant pushback among Americans. Carlos Salinas de Gortari, the Mexican president at the time, promised Americans that the agreement would reduce migration by stabilizing Mexico’s economy.
Instead, the agreement caused vast unemployment in Mexican industries that struggled with their new competition, leading to one of the largest historic spikes in immigration to the United States from Mexico. This brought a boom of Mexican grocery stores, butchers, restaurants, and other businesses to the U.S., especially in Californian communities like the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Grocery store chains like Chavez Supermarkets, Vallarta Market, and Northgate González are still thriving in these parts of the state.
7. Italian Food Goes Regional In my house, in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, the ’90s was the era when the green Kraft canister of Parmesan cheese in the refrigerator was replaced with a little plastic-wrapped triangle of hard cheese and a hand-crank cheese grater. Starbucks and Olive Garden (which were founded in the ’70s and ’80s, respectively) were starting to make their way into every suburb, and Americans were warming up to the idea of saying “venti” out loud.
Marcella Hazan, Italy’s Julia Child, published The Essentials of Italian Cooking in 1992, and Molto Mario (starring Mario Batali before he had been accused of sexual assault) first aired in 1996. Americans were coming to terms with the fact that Italian food was more than a plate of spaghetti and meatballs—it was a cuisine with discrete regions, like Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. And of course, every chef and home cook in America started putting sun-dried tomatoes on everything.
8. The Collapse of the Soviet Union Rewrites the World Map When the Soviet Union ended in 1991, the entire world map changed. Countries that hadn’t had a spot on the spinning globe in decades reemerged, and a few altogether new ones were formed. Suddenly, trade opened up between these countries and the rest of the world, spurring a period of wild, unregulated capitalism. Soviet-government-owned food-manufacturing companies started going out of business.
“Everyone wanted pizza, and later in the ’90s sushi, and there was this huge flood of new, very shoddy quality global foods, to which most people didn’t have access because the prices weren’t regulated,” says Anya Von Bremzen, the author of Please to the Table and Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking. “It’s a decade that’s remembered really negatively in that former Soviet bloc.”
The dissolution of the USSR also increased immigration to the U.S. from former Soviet countries. Cuba, which had been a close ally of the Soviet Union, was plunged into an economic depression, during which lack of ingredients lead to a loss of traditional Cuban cuisine.
On a broader level, as Von Bremzen points out, this large-scale globalization was the start of another very ’90s concept: nostalgia for all things regional.

“Please Parker! That would be so cute if we were out there together!” Parker had heard it all week, Alex trying to convince her to go out and be at ringside during The Best Friends match. “Alex, you can support your man, I’ll support mine backstage.”
Alex shook Parker’s shoulders, “Pleeeeaasseeee?” Parker took her hands, “How about, you go find your man Trent, he probably has Sour Patch Kids waiting for you...and a kiss.” Alex rolled her eyes as she turned away, “Way to make us sound cheesy, Park.” “You’re welcome!”
She was suddenly startled when she felt hands snake around her waist, she turned her head to see her boyfriend, Chuck. “Hey stupid.”
“Hello bighead.” He returned. “Are you ready for your match tonight?” He put his chin on her head, still hugging her, “Yeah, you should be at ringside with Alex though.” Parker tried her best to put on a genuine voice, “Maybe next time. We’ll let Trent and Alex get the cute couple spot this week.”
Chuck spun her around, “You know that we always have that spot.” Parker grinned, “Oh stop it.” Chuck just smirked looking at her, “You’re so pretty when you smile.”
Parker looked down and hid her face, “I am not.”
The mood suddenly changed, especially with Chuck, “You gotta stop doing that.” Parker looked up, brow arched, “Doing what?” “I don’t know, dodging all the compliments. Suddenly feeling weird whenever I hug you. And just not being confident with yourself or the relationship.”
Parker suddenly got angry, “Well I’m sorry that I can’t control it! Why don’t you focus on your match in 10 minutes instead of me!” Not too far away were Gabby and Bri, watching the situation unfold.
“It’s just, it’s like you don’t even want to be with me!” He argued back, Parker just shook her head, “Why does it matter? You’re gonna get what you want from me then leave!” “What?!”
“Gabby what’s gonna happen?” Bri whispered. Gabby shook her head, worried look on her face, “Something tells me that Parker is gonna do something stupid.”
“Parker, all I want you to accept is that I want to be with you and you’re beautiful! But you’re too fucking insecure to admit that!” Chuck yelled, finally stating his mind.
Tears brimmed Parker’s eyes, fists clenched, “Y’know what? Fuck this. I’m done.” She walked past him, fast and angrily. “So this is how it’s gonna end?” Chuck called out.
Gabby grabbed Parker’s arm while she was walking, “Parker wait-” “Get the hell off me Gabby, I’m not in the mood.” She said fast, pulling her friend's arm off. “What’s wrong with her?” Bri questioned, watching Parker leave. “I don’t know. At all.”
Gabby was standing around backstage after the incident when she felt a tap on her shoulder. “Gabby?” Said Anna Jay, in ring gear. “Hey!” “Hey! So I’m coming out with Dark Order tonight and I thought it would be cool if you came out with Adam and Kenny.” That night Adam and Kenny had a title match against Brodie Lee and Evil Uno. “Omg I love the idea. I’ll for sure ask Adam.” Gabby said with excitement in her voice.
The fans knew about her from BTE and from Adam posting them every once in a while, so it would get a Twitter pop. “Ok cool. Hope to see you out there!” Anna said before walking away.
 20 minutes later
Gabby walked into Adam and Kenny’s locker room, hair in a half up half down tied up with a blue ribbon, Kenny and Adam’s merch on with blue jean shorts matching it with her Doc. Martin boots. “Damn bae.” Adam looked her up and down while in the middle of lacing his boots. “Look babe, Anna had this amazing idea that I came out there with you guys tonight, and I’m already ready sooo-“ Gabby Motioned her hands down her body showing off her outfit. ”Yea whatever. Bring yourself over here.” “Gladly.” Gabby smirked.
 10 minutes later
“I’m nervous Adam.” Gabby shouted over Dark Order’s entrance music. Her anxiety was starting to come but she wouldn’t let it stop her for once in her life. Adam pulled Gabby in, hooking his hand around her waist, something he knew calmed her. “You got it, just go and ya know, be yourself.” Adam smiled. Not even 7 feet away, Kenny was standing there with a confused face, wondering what the fuck gabby and Adam were talking about. Shortly after Hangman’s music hit, Adam walked out 1st, then Gabby. She saw Joey out in the crowd which calmed her anxiety the whole time. Then Kenny’s music hit and the match started.
 After Match
”Man what the fuck was that?” Kenny spat out. “Was what Kenny?” Adam was confused by his problem. “Y’know, ever since Gabby’s been around you’ve been different, like no one thought to tell me she was coming out?” “Well my bad Kenny, geez I don’t know what your problem is with me!” Gabby shouted. Kenny let out a light smile “You don’t know my problem? Bullshit Gabby! You and I both know what my problem is!”  “Um, is there anything I should know?” Adam looked at them both concerned and confused. “It’s not even like that Adam. Fuck this I’m going to go find my friends.” Gabby angrily walked away, not wanting to hear anymore of Kenny’s complaining.
“You know I have to go find Marq.” Bri mumbled against Cash’s skin. “Or you could stay here. That’s possible.” Bri stood up, putting her shirt on, “He’s gonna be looking for me. And we can’t keep doing this. Backstage at least.”
“I mean, we could. But if it means I get more time before the show or after the show, I’m fine with it.” Bri rolled her eyes, looking towards the mirror to touch up her makeup. Cash appeared behind her in the mirror, kissing her neck. “Cash...stop. I gotta find Marq.” “One more round?” She smirked, and shrugged her shirt off, turning back to Cash.
He backed her up till she fell back on the couch, before he climbed on top of her, kissing her deeply. They were so in the moment that they almost didn’t notice her phone ringing, she looked at it when her eyes widened and she pushed the man off her, “It’s Marq!” She stood up and answered the phone, “Hey cutie.” “What’s up gorgeous?” “Oh uh, nothing much. Where are you?”
“Precisely, Isiah and I are about two turns away from the hallway where all the tag team locker rooms are.” Bri freaked out hearing that sentence and blurted out, “Oh! I’m uh..right by there! I’ll see you in a sec!” She hung up the phone without any other word. She ran towards her shirt, put it on, quickly fixed up her hair and wiped away any smudged makeup.
“Catch you later hot stuff.” Cash called out, “Bye handsome.”
She had walked out in the hallway and sat in a chair like she had been there for a while, she heard the familiar voices of Marq and Isiah in the middle of conversation. She stood up and plastered a smile on your face, “Hey you.” Marq pulled her in for a hug, when Isiah stared daggers at her from behind his back.
They pulled away when Marq kissed her, “Is that new chapstick?” “Uh, yeah.”
“It tastes great,” He looked Bri over when he asked, “Why is your shirt inside out?” She looked down at her shirt when she looked back up at Marq with a confused face, and Isiah with an expression that said ‘you’re a cheating bitch’. “Oh uhm, Parker spilled her blue slushie on me, so I just turned it inside out. It’s velvet on both sides anyway.”
Isiah scoffed, “Oh yeah, Parker’s always spilling something. Unfortunately not secrets.”
He looked Bri up and down before walking away.
“What’s his deal?” Bri asked, trying to pretend she didn’t know. “I don’t know. Maybe a bad Vodka Cranberry.”

The day ended for everyone at Daily’s Place. And one of the first two people to leave? Adam and Gabby.
“So Gabby.” Adam said, hands on the steering wheel. The couple were heading to the hotel for the night. “Yeah Adam?” “What was up earlier, y’know with Kenny?” Adam asked. “I don’t know what’s up Adam.” Gabby said, irritated that he was asking her and not Kenny.
He grabbed her hand holding it in lock while driving with one arm, “Gabby I love you, so much. And I’m hoping you're not hiding something from me.” Confused Gabby let go of his hand “The fuck you mean by that, whatever your tryna say here I don’t get it!” She shouted.
“Babe I’m not tryna say anything, calm your ass down.” Adam said in a demanding tone, something he knew Gabby liked.
He followed up with “You looked fine as hell out there tonight, and I don’t want you mad. So don’t be, please?” Adam reached for her hand again. Being the clingy person she was, she didn’t push back. she held his hand tighter in comfort, “I fucking adore you Adam. Don’t ask me dumb stuff anymore though. Because then I’ll have to fuck you up.” she smiled at him.
“Not like I’ma fuck you up once we get to this hotel.” Adam smirked. She rolled her eyes at him, “Too tired for your needy ass, a lot happened today.” He placed his hand on her thigh sending a message only Gabby would understand. “Bet.” Gabby smirked at Adam as their car ride continued.
Back at the arena many people were still packing and some were starting to leave. One person, Parker, was yelling at the Lyft driver for being 20 minutes late. And already fragile from the night's previous events, she couldn’t help but cry while doing so, “I just need to get to my hotel!” She paused listening to the person on the other line, “Y’know what, have a good fucking night, sir. I hope you drive your car off a pier!” She hung up the phone, and paced back and forth, wondering what she should do next.
So she did the first thing that came to mind, and that was to kick a street light, with her slides on.
“Fuck!” She screeched, holding her foot. “Parker?” She looked over at Alex and Trent, all their bags in hands, looking at the person in front of them like a psycho. “Look, if you’ve just come to question me about my fight with Chuck then just leave okay?!” Alex walked towards her and put a friendly hand on her shoulder, “Hey, it’s fine, we know it was...intense. Do you want a ride? It’s Chuck free.” Alex smiled lightly at that last part, trying to make her friend laugh.
Parker nodded and she gathered her stuff, walking towards their car.
Parker knew that if she even started speaking, she would break down crying. So for most of the ride she just sat looking at her knees, numb look on her face. The car came to a halt when Trent looked back at her, “We’re here.”
They all walked in the lobby and Alex turned towards her before heading to the check in desk, “If you need anything, room B145. As long as it’s not at 3 am.” They smiled at each other before the two walked away.
She now had nowhere to stay for the night, so she texted a friend, hoping they would agree to sharing a room. She saw a figure standing in front of her, and she looked up, seeing Chuck.
“So what? Are we done?” He asked, still confused.
She held back tears as best as she could, “Look, you need someone who will know that you love them, who will accept your compliments. That’s not me.” “But if that’s what you’re worried about then we can work on it, just please...Parker,” He held up a hand to put on her cheek but she stepped away. “Chuck..you’re perfect. And there are beautiful women and handsome men all over the world. One of them is for you. A person who can’t even handle being called your “whatever” isn’t for you.”
“You are for me! Why are you second guessing it?” “Chuck...you said it yourself. I’m too insecure.”
“You know I didn’t mean it like that.” “Yes..yes you did. What’s gonna happen when you first say you love me? You probably couldn’t even say it without me refusing to believe it.”
Chuck didn’t say anything, he just stood there, sad look on his face.
“I’m sorry, Chuck. I think it’s just better for both of us if we aren’t together.”
She walked towards the elevator to go up to her friends’ room. Tears spilling out her eyes the whole way, yet still staying silent. Parker knocked on the door, it took a second and the sounds inside stopped suddenly, but when Marko opened the door and Austin looked out from one of the beds, they were not expecting a wreck.
“Woah, what happened?” Marko asked, letting her in. She shook her head, Austin appeared next to the two, concerned about the situation, “You gotta tell us, man.”
Parker blinked and took a deep breath, and said a sentence she never wanted to say.
“We broke up.”
