I've been reading your ofmd meta. It's amazing! How did you learn to figure all that stuff out?

Thank you for the ask!

There are two distinct questions here:

What makes OFMD a compelling ground for media and critical (meta) analysis?

What’s the critical basis I’m using in writing meta analysis and how did I learn to use it the way I do?

Why Write Meta Analysis of “Our Flag Means Death”?

The first question is easy: THERE IS SO MUCH TO UNPACK HERE. It’s all right out in the open, too, and it’s a real credit to David Jenkins that he created a supportive environment for the cast, the creative directors, the writers, and his entire CREW to bring all of their creative selves.

OFMD is so full of love for its characters and story that it always takes my breath away whenever I think about it. So much creative energy and love was wrapped into this show in so many ways that I’ll never shut up about it ever.

The second question has a longer answer.

Analytical Training, Experience, and Practice (Not Necessarily In That Order)

While I am formally trained and have a BA in English, I would still credit my experience as a writer-practitioner as equally or more important in my analytical background as the formal training.

I am first and foremost a writer, and I “read” texts like a writer who wants to figure out what makes a narrative function. Learning how something is working is fundamental to being able to replicate it in your own artwork.

The simplest term for what I use as a framework for all my meta is a technique historically called close reading, but I’d openly admit that I am more flexible and informal with it than you’d find taught in a typical college class!

Think of a “reading” in literature or film/media analysis as a bit like what a study or practice sketch does for visual artists.

When I was writing my meta post on The Tragedy of Israel Hands, I very explicitly decided to tackle OFMD and what was happening with Izzy by breaking down the show into episode-by-episode readings from Izzy’s point of view.

I also chose to add some extra spice based on direct scene transcriptions, mentions of Izzy by-name even when he wasn’t on-screen, and what was happening for him as a character (what was his story?) vs. the obvious romance that was happening for Edward and Stede in the foreground.

David Jenkins had helpfully stated in an interview that OFMD was broken up into acts, so I just followed his lead on doing the same in my analysis. ;) He’d also suggested doing a rewatch with a focus on Con O’Neill and I was intrigued by the possibility of what I might find.

Turned out? Con managed to fit an actual three-act tragedy into the same visual and narrative space (albeit in the background) as Rhys and Taika acting the main romance in the foreground! This is fucking incredible in my opinion. Con’s narrative counterpoint with Izzy adds so much depth and richness to the romance and the comedy. I could chew glass over it (and I did! hence the post).

I firmly believe that ANYONE can do a good and detailed textual reading (with or without formal training), so here’s my quick(?) breakdown of how that works for me in the hope that it will inspire you and others to try your hand!

The best way to get good at analysis is to practice. Analyze, analyze, analyze! Write, write, write! Create in whatever way makes sense to your brain and energizes you to explore how you think about what you love. You don’t even have to publish/share the results. It can just be for you if you want.

As usual, only do what works for you.

If there’s a thought or a step that you want to skip? Skip it. Do what you want. Create and write meta! Enrich the OFMD fandom with your own readings. :D

Ferus-Style Close Reading Guide

Goal: Break things down to build a detailed, text-supported understanding of a creative product (story, episode, play, film, painting, etc.). You can do this whenever you’re interested in something and feel like spending more time with it as a method of learning more and deeply appreciating a work of art.

Pick a moment in the text (show, fanfic, story, etc.) that interests you.

Interest is crucial! Think about why you’re interested. Sit with the text a bit.

Take extensive notes on what’s happening. You can also use another method you prefer like outlining, grabbing screencaps, or some combination to record and organize your first impressions and thoughts.

This serves as a record of where you started.

Don’t necessarily try to interpret right away, but DO decide for yourself what you think is happening in a moment or a particular scene. This can be as short as a single line of text or a few seconds of interaction in a TV episode or film. Trust yourself! The best art, by and large, does what it does in plain sight and will repeat or reinforce the significant themes and symbols.

Hold off on interpretation to allow yourself time to develop a good understanding of what has actually taken place in the text. Plenty of professional critics are weak at this step and jump straight into reshaping events to fit their thesis and interpretation rather than reading “out of” a text. It’s not necessarily bad (and there are techniques that use this sort of interpretation), but it’s really not where I’m coming from.

Break down your favorite scenes into as many moments (or points of focus) as are likely to be relevant to your analysis. If you’re working with a specific character, focus on their actions or their scenes (or other ‘by name’ references when they’re not on-screen). If the focus is a motif (a visual element), try to figure out what its appearance or framing is accomplishing when it is present. How do other characters react to it or introduce it? How do these interactions “read” to you? Again, what is happening?

This is the focusing step that typically tells me where the rest of my analysis is going. At this point I usually have an idea of what I’m seeing when it’s either reinforced by one or more sequential scenes (reinforced) or dropped and sidelined in an interesting way.

Take a step back and think about how the moment you’re analyzing is ‘working.’ What does it do? What purpose does this story beat or moment serve? Why is it happening in this moment, at this specific time, and what important features of character, setting, or story are happening? What are the consequences that follow?

I can’t stress consequences enough! Actions having consequences is a fundamental element of a well-structured narrative. The narrative consequences for a character or a plotline are one of the things that is MOST controlled by authorial choice. Do these consequences fit in with the theme you’ve noticed? Why or why not? Whatever is happening here is usually some of the most interesting elements of the narrative (if they’re present).

Write down your initial guesses about the answers the questions above. Or answer a few of your own questions in a first pass. Theorize!

Now that you’ve considered the individual moments, scenes, or elements and taken a stab at the larger emergent themes it’s time to mash them together into a coherent picture (what are YOU seeing?). How are you seeing this text?

Keep repeating the process above for other surrounding scenes (the context) or moments relevant to your analysis.

YMMV with repetition. A longer analysis takes more repetition. A shorter or more contained analysis may only go through this process once. Again -- no one person will see the same scene the same way as another! Everyone has a valuable perspective to contribute.

Theorize once again after stringing the analytical moments together and connecting them -- what new ideas occur to you once you’ve chewed over the “small” interesting bits separately? Does a pattern begin to emerge? Why or why not?

You can learn as much from figuring out your first impressions were wrong (and looking again to see what’s ACTUALLY happening) as you will from being “right” the first time. Enjoy the experience!

You can learn almost as much from absence as from presence. While that may sound cryptic at first, glaring absences when characters or significant elements are NOT present are just as important in their own way, and may help you discover other themes in the same text. Strategic absences are MUCH more difficult to identify without careful attention. They’ll be obvious when you begin to look for them (which is the fun bit).

“Establishing” shots (introductions, first/last shots, first/last words) are always important.

Repeated and reinforced themes are generally stronger indications that a particular symbol or motif is significant. Looking for repetition or apparently deliberate call-backs to previous episodes, comments, scenes, or character relationships are often where the most fruitful opportunities for analysis are located.

Write up your general conclusions based on what you’ve learned from your smaller (close) bite-size readings and why you believe they’re significant along with how they’re functioning. If you observe a theme or pattern, focus your writing on how that pattern is built up and the evidence you found to support that conclusion.

And you’re done! Or whatever process you prefer is finished. For now. ;)

The most important element in my analytical process is close attention to the different on-screen choices (in framing, acting, and dialogue) that I’m seeing in a particular episode.

I take extensive notes on what’s happening, sometimes by recording transcripts of the dialogue and often through watching and re-watching a scene of particular interest.

To continue with my example meta, The Tragedy of Israel Hands was based on rewatching OFMD with a focus on what was happening to Izzy in both the foreground and the background, with these questions in mind:

What would this story arc appear to be from Izzy’s perspective?

What extent was that interpretation supported by: each character’s arc, the framing of various shots, and the choices and tone throughout the context of Con O’Neill’s overall performance of this character?

Was there a narrative thread linking together Izzy Hands’s story as a contrast to Edward and Stede’s foreground romance?

And now you have the meta on the meta. METACEPTION. -is shot-

Idk hot take for a Saturday morning, but maybe people shouldn’t be SO quick to switch to a mentality of: “well I’m not voting at all” about American politics in regards to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict/genocide just bc America has had its dick in those affairs LONG BEFORE fucking Biden Presidecy and people are seemingly just NOW feeling publically vocally outraged about it bc it’s in the forefront news (as you should be), but maybe also let’s use our fucking brains for a moment if you are American:

we should, and can easily, also still focus on that which is in our own backyard, if you don’t vote fucking blue, because green/third parties are not actually viable in the deeply established two party system we have had for CENTURIES, we get fucking DeSantis or some other horrible Fascist Republican and then America is going to have its own genocide against LGBTQ+ people, fascism goes up, continued attacks against drag/immigrants/etc.

You also know damn well that any Republican, If one were president, would be doing the same fucking thing of providing aid to Israel, so I guess personally I’m just confused as to why everyone is surprised biden is doing the same.

You can and should support a free Palestine, and hold contempt for Israel and condemn their actions, AND also know that voting blue is Americas literal only chancE RIGHT CURRENTLY NOW this upcoming year, to remain somewhat of a democracy instead of a ChristoFascist regime, especially with Biden being one of the ONLY blue candidates like… our hands are TIED

You know what hits me hard? When 5 to 6 year old children, all the way in Southeast Asia, knows about what's happening in Palestine right now. That children their age is getting bombed, that they're starving to death, that they're getting shot at, and sniped in the head. Because, just this past 2 or so months, I heard some of the little ones in the Kindergarten classes I'm TAing in as an Intern talk about it. Hell, one of the little boys downright said he didn't like Israel, because Israel is bad, because they do scary things. Another was questioning whether Palestine was bad too, because, "why else would they shooting at them?". A little girl in one of my classes doesn't want to finish her food at all, because she wants to save at least half her meat and rice for kids in Palestine, because she heard that, they don't have food. And that's just the ones I remember. Namely the inciting cases before their classmates slowly follow suit. The littles are fricking SCARED. We had to sit these kids down, and tell them that the topic is too mature for them at the moment, that they shouldn't even be concerned because they're KINDERGARTNERS, they're not even old enough to properly understand. The one teacher I was TAing for had to make a class announcement saying that. What gets me is, these are 5 to 6 year olds, the youngest I've worked with in this specific age group is 4. 5 years old on average, and they've already been exposed to the worst horrors genocide has to offer through the news and snippets of conversation among adults and hell, considering how many of them say they like to play games on Mama's phone, or their IPad, even from fricking social media. And the fact that, these literal babies, from all the way in Cambodia, has more empathy in their entire body and soul, than full grown fricking adults have in the nail of their pinky finger, gets me. FFS we as adults could LEARN from them I feel sometimes. I honestly don't know what to feel about it anymore. On the one hand, this is the next generation I'm working with. And if the next generation's default response to a tragedy such as Palestine, is what I've seen come up on occasion so far? Perhaps there's some bloody hope for this world after all. At least in this country. Especially since a majority of them already come from families who survived a genocide. These are the 3rd - 4th generation descendants of those who survived the Khmer Rouge. They've got grandparents at home, who no doubt are more than intimately familiar with what Palestine is going through right now. And it shows.

But on the other, it makes my heart sink because these are CHILDREN, these are LITTLE KIDS, they should be playing with their toys and watching cartoons and talking to their friends about everything from Spiderman to Speakerman to Kuromi and her friends, and be worried about whether or not they can go to playground that day, guranteed they're well behaved, or if Mama remembered to pack in their costume for swimming lessons that week. NOT JUST MY KIDS. But the little ones in Palestine too. They deserve better. They all deserve, so much better. Hell, it's come to the point that whenever I look at my kiddos right now, whether they'd be working in class, playing, doing something as mundane as eating lunch or getting ready for their nap. I think of the children their age in Palestine that didn't even get the chance to survive. I think of the ones whose memories from this age, is nothing but absolute horror and pain, rather than what has slowly become my normal, who never got to experience what my littles do on a daily basis right now.

Children shouldn't even be concerned about "War", about a Genocide. The last thing that should be on a 5 year old's mind, is pain, and suffering, and the worst horrors imaginable ever to be inflicted on a human being. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S INFLICTED, ON OTHER CHILDREN THEIR AGE. And for that alone, the world has failed them. Especially the kids in Palestine who didn't ask for any of this. They just wanted to carry on with life as kids do, the same way as my littles do on a daily basis no doubt, learning, playing, chatting with friends over their favourite cartoons and characters, worrying about whether they'd get to go to the playground or not that day.

I apologize for talking about this on this blog. I know my blog tends to be lighter in feel, a lot more unhinged and light hearted typically. I mean, I'm just a fricking nerd who likes to draw and write, and lurk about her favourite fandoms to consume and support what is shared among other nerds who also like to draw and write. But I couldn't stop thinking about it. About contemplating it, especially since I'll be back on a roll tomorrow, working with my kiddos again after not seeing them for 5 days straight because of Holidays. And, I just had to talk about it. This is something I felt I couldn't keep to myself this time, I don't think my soul'd be able to carry it. I had to talk about it.

FREE PALESTINE. Our children deserve better.

A Chabad synagogue in Pomona, New York, burned to the ground on April 17th, along with its three Torah scrolls.

Torah scrolls are hand-written, hand-made, and kept in elaborately decorated cases or wrappings.

Many of them have long histories; my synagogue has two, I think, that were smuggled out of villages being destroyed in pogroms or in Nazi attacks. One of them is the only remaining piece of that village on earth.

Sometimes, the Torah scroll doesn't even belong to the synagogue, but is on loan from a place like the Memorial Scrolls Trust:

There's an entire Jewish holiday just for taking them out and dancing with them: Simchat Torah, "The Joy of Torah."

In fact, that was the holiday on which Hamas's invasion took place.

So it's a particular tragedy when a Torah is destroyed.

Chabad itself has a page about what goes into making just one Torah scroll:

"An authentic Torah scroll is a mind-boggling masterpiece of labor and skill. Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment -- cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exacting Torah law specifications -- and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes many months to complete.

"An expert pious scribe carefully inks each letter with a feather quill, under the intricate calligraphic guidelines of Ktav Ashurit (Ashurite Script). The sheets of parchment are then sewn together with sinews to form one long scroll. While most Torah scrolls stand around two feet in height and weigh 20-25 pounds, some are huge and quite heavy, while others are doll-sized and lightweight."

I learned all of this on Tumblr.

Once upon time, in people's "punch Nazis" days, I would've been able to find some mention on Tumblr of this synagogue burning.

There is none, so I'm posting about it.

And I'm going to quote Daniel Weiner, Rabbi of Temple de Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue, Washington, when his own synagogue was vandalized last November:

"It’s horrific and heartbreaking.... [Taking out your feelings about] what's going on in the Middle East by defacing a sacred space of a synagogue -- that’s the very definition of antisemitism."

I'm also posting about the Kehillat Shaarei Torah Synagogue in Toronto, whose windows were broken on Friday, April 19th, by someone who also tried to break the front door down.

And the April 15 graffiti outside a Bangor, Maine synagogue that said, "Nazi Israel 30K murdered," next to a crossed-out Star of David. The same synagogue faced pro-Hamas flyers plastered around it in November.

I was going to include all the synagogues vandalized over the past six months. But there are way too many. Several every week. Lots are swastikas.

I'll go back to just doing attacks on and near synagogues.

Someone has to talk about the 1-year-old who was stabbed outside Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) synagogue, in Philadelphia, on April 13th.

The foiled terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue on April 11th.

The man who, on April 9th, screamed at the rabbi at Moldova's Great Synagogue, "What are you doing here? How come no one has finished you off for everything you are doing to the Palestinians?" Just one week after people had vandalized a Holocaust memorial in nearby Soroka, and sprayed "Free Palestine" on it.

The Oldenburg, Germany synagogue that was firebombed on April 5th.

The Florida Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center, which on March 16 burned, but not to the ground. The Torah scrolls were safe, and no one was hurt, but the back of the building was severely damaged.

The planned-but-thwarted-on-March-7th ISIS massacre in a Moscow synagogue.

The stabbing of an Orthodox Jew in Switzerland on March 5th. (He was badly injured, but expected to survive.)

A man leaving a synagogue in Paris was beaten on March 3rd.

People set the courtyard of a synagogue in Sfax, Tunisia on fire on February 27th. Firefighters managed to put the fire out before it consumed the inside of the building.

The synagogue is no longer used; there are no Jews left in its area, and fewer than 1,000 Jews left in Tunisia overall.

(Thousands of Tunisian Jews were sent to work camps during the Holocaust. Antisemitism across the Middle East continued to increase rapidly for decades. By the 1970s, 90% of Tunisian Jews had fled to France or Israel.)

On February 18, an Orthodox Jew leaving Synagogue of Inverrary-Chabad in Lauderhill, Florida, was beaten by an attacker yelling racial slurs.

Someone deliberately chose International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, to smash all the windows in the front of Sgoolai Israel Synagogue in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick.

On December 29, Turkey arrested 32 people linked to ISIS who were planning attacks on synagogues and churches.

On December 17, a man drove a U-Haul truck up onto the sidewalk between a barrier and the front door of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington D.C., got out, and started yelling "Gas the Jews." He also sprayed a foul-smelling substance on two people leaving the synagogue.

December 17 also saw 400 synagogues across the United States receive bomb threats.

On December 11, a man attacked an elderly couple on their way into a synagogue in Los Angeles, screaming, "Give me your earrings, Jew!!" and beating one of them bloody with a belt. (Happily, he chased the guy down the street, and caught him when his pants fell down.)

On December 10, a 16-year-old was arrested in Vienna for planning an attack on a synagogue.

On December 8, on the first night of Hanukkah, 15 synagogues in New York State received bomb threats. And someone screamed, "Free Palestine," and fired shots outside of Temple Israel in Albany, NY. Which has a preschool that was in session.

Meanwhile, the five Jews left in Egypt were canceling public Hanukkah candle-lighting at their synagogue out of fear of reprisals. Particularly after two Israelis in Alexandria had been gunned down by terrorists on October 8. (While Israel was still fighting Hamas in Israel.)

On November 15, a terrorist group set the only synagogue in Armenia on fire.

Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) has a history of working with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

(PFLP is part of Hamas's network of groups. Samidoun is their nonprofit arm - which is why Germany banned Samidoun last year, although it's still active in many other countries.

PFLP is also actively supported by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), a diaspora nonprofit group, and Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an SJP spinoff in NYC.)

On November 11, halfway through Shabbat services, police asked Central Shul in Melbourne, Australia to evacuate "as a precaution" due to a "pro-Palestinian" protest that had chosen the neighboring park as its gathering place. Australia has seen some very outspoken antisemitism at protests, including the march shortly after October 7 that chanted "Gas the Jews."

Also on November 11, protesters targeted a synagogue along a march route. They sat in their cars, spraying green smoke and shouting at people leaving the synagogue. The march itself featured a record number of horrifying signs and chants.

On November 7th, Congregation Beth Tikvah in Montreal was firebombed, and the back door of the Jewish organization across the street (Federation CJA) was set on fire.

On November 4, protesters chanted "Bomb Israel," and burned an Israeli flag outside the only synagogue in Malmo, Sweden.

During October, there were 501 antisemitic acts under investigation in France in just three weeks, including groups gathering in front of synagogues shouting threats, and graffiti such as the words “killing Jews is a duty” sprayed outside a stadium.

On October 18, people firebombed a synagogue in Berlin after homes all over the neighborhood were graffitied with stars of David.

And also on October 18, hundreds of "pro-Palestine" rioters attacked the Or Zaruah Synagogue, in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa, while worshippers were inside.

Based on the video, they seem to have blocked the synagogue entrance completely, while screaming "Murderous Israel" and waving Palestinian flags. (Melilla is an autonomous zone belonging to Spain. It borders Morocco.)

On October 17, during pro-Palestinian protests, hundreds of rioters set fire to Al Hammah synagogue, an abandoned house of prayer in central Tunisia. They hammered down the building’s walls and raised a Palestinian flag on the building. Police did not intervene.

The Facebook page "Tunigate", which has around 88 thousand followers, published a video of the assault. So did "Radio Bousalem”, with 83 thousand users. The vast majority of comments on these videos welcome these acts. The building was severely damaged and almost completely razed to the ground.

On October 15, bomb threats were sent to many East Coast synagogues. Attleboro synagogue Congregation Agudas-Achim received one of the emails, which read, "The bombs will blow up in a few hours. A lot of people will die. You all deserve to die."

No matter what, don’t lose your humanity.

I see this rhetoric very often, that if you call for the release of the hostages and condemn Hamas terrorism and the atrocities they’ve committed, then you automatically “must support the death of Palestinian civilians”.

Conversely, those who claim to care about the Palestinian civilians don’t seem to call for the release of hostages, never acknowledge the rape, torture, and murder of civilians on Oct 7. In fact, they seem to celebrate death of who they perceive as “Zionist”.

I saw this play out before my eyes on TikTok. A singer named Cat Janice was dying from cancer, and she asked her audience to use her song in their videos as she had willed the proceeds to her young son who is not more than 7 or 8 years old. People labelled her a Zionist because she apparently was following an Israeli account on Instagram.

It was a very tragic story and her family was going through a hard time dealing with the aggressive cancer that was slowly weakening her body.

But as we’ve seen:

They don’t care about people who are suffering from terminal illnesses and will harass them anyway.

In her videos of her giving updates on her situation and pleading with people for empathy for her young son, they flooded her comment section with spam:

Unfortunately, Cat Janice passed away, BDE. But that didn’t stop the harassment. In fact, some celebrated her death and even lauded it as a good thing as there is “one less Zionist” now.

Yes, there are people like this out there. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as they’ve been violent, they’ve been sending death threats, they’ve been chanting for violent “resistance” and “intifada” and the death of Jews and Israelis, as well as their allies. They celebrate violence in the most disgusting and dehumanising way possible.

Just look at the comments in this video of a Jewish creator saying that in Berlin, a Jewish student was attacked:

Meanwhile, we chant “Am Yisrael Chai”. We call for life, we focus on saving all lives, no matter who.

As the leaders of Hamas said in an interview, “The Israelis are known to love life. We, on the other hand, sacrifice ourselves. We consider our dead to be martyrs.”

Every innocent death is a tragedy, Israeli and Palestinian. Death IS a tragedy. The killing of Hamas terrorists, albeit deserved, is a tragedy because of the terroristic path they chose in life and what horrific crimes they had committed in order to warrant death as a means of justice.

As much as I wish that one day, those people who have spewed those vile, antisemitic, inhuman things will feel guilty for what they have said, I doubt they will. The perceived safety and anonymity of social media coupled with their complete absence of humanity, compassion, and empathy evaporates any drop of guilty conscience they may have. All we can wish is that fair and just consequences for their actions will be meted out to them one day.

But my fellow Jews, my fellow zionists, my fellow allies, please never, NEVER stoop to that level. It goes against everything we are about.

Once we lose our humanity, we’ll become dulled to the suffering of others. That’s not what we want, and it directly goes against the spirit of Judaism and Israel.

Continue to mourn the death of innocents, continue to get angry and weep for tragedy and injustice, continue to celebrate new life and lives saved. Continue to feel like a human being. Don’t be like them.

I’ve been thinking about this for some time now and I was hesitant to post about it because I don’t want my voice muddying actual protests and testaments from people actually affected because I am not Jewish or Palestinian. And I don’t know if this is the right medium for this remark but I didn’t know where else to put it.

But as someone from South Africa, who grew up listening to first hand accounts of people, black and white, who lived through Apartheid, as someone who had to learn the horrific history of Apartheid and how sick and twisted that regime was. And even then I cannot claim to be an expert because even my school didn’t teach us every detail (which is sad because while it’s painful, it’s part of history and we must learn about it to never repeat it).

But knowing what I do know about Apartheid and seeing the after effects of it where I live… it really disturbs me to see the word Apartheid thrown around so carelessly to describe Israel. It’s not only untrue but trying to apply to Israel what the white minority government did in South Africa to harm and have power over people of colour in every aspect of life, feels like it only does a massive disservice to actual Apartheid victims. Real people were killed and tortured and suppressed in terms of marriage, to where they could live, who they could love, what they could learn in schools, having the right to vote, having curfews and time restrictions or else risk persecution and brutality…. It just leaves me speechless that people so easily want to wash away the real tragedy of Apartheid because it’s a big sounding buzzword. Calling Israel an Apartheid state, in my mind, does nothing except invalidate the real victims of that horrific regime and it makes me sick.

I’m sorry for ranting like that but I just cannot wrap my head around it at all. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the Apartheid regime and Israel’s government are in no way the same.

This is an extremely important perspective, and it would be a great help if you would be willing to share it openly.

There have been many voices from South Africa rejecting the "apartheid" comparison. It is important to show would-be activists that they are appropriating and disrespecting other peoples' suffering.

For the first time, Hamas trrorists admit during their interrogations, that Israel has succeeded in killing their comrades underground, in the terror tunnels, something that's much harder for the IDF to verify. As is, Israel estimates that it has killed over 9,000 terrorists during this war so far.

After the IDF exposes, maps and documents a Hamas terror tunnel, it gets blown up, so that the terrorists won't be able to easily restore it to functionality at the end of the war. Since unsurprisingly, Iran is blaming Israel and the US for the bombings yesterday, I will say that the most convincing take I heard about it is that ISIS committed the terrorist attack at Soleimani's funeral, a theory which apparently a US senior supports. Soleimani was thought to have played a big role in the defeat of ISIS.

I saw the director of this segment, Ami Horowitz, giving an interview about it. He said he wanted to see will people donate to the cause of attacking Jews. Not Zionists. Not Israelis. Jews. He was asked whether anyone objected or reported him to the police, but he said out of everyone he engaged in conversation, not a single person did. Out of 35 people he approached, 28 did have a conversation about it with him, and 17 agreed to donate money to his cause.

This is 25 years old Sahar Baruch.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Sahar, who was kidnapped by Hamas, died during a rescue attempt by IDF soldiers from the place where he was held. The army says that for now, it's impossible to tell how he was killed, or during which stage during this failed attempt. His grandfather was interviewed today, and was asked whether it is possible to bring their kibbutz back to life after this tragedy. He said, it is not possible, it has to be done.

Orin's daughter Eden was murdered at the Nova music festival, her body was kidnapped to Gaza, but the IDF managed to rescue and return it. Orin talked about the day the soldiers who rescued the body came to see her, saying she expected 2-3 to come visit her, despite having little free time during their break from the fighting in Gaza. 15 young soldiers showed up. Orin said how meaningful that was to her, and she thanked them for having risked their lives, to allow her daughter to be buried in a proper grave in Israel. Another person who wanted to pay his respects was Chagai. His son, Yehonatan Luber, was one of the soldiers who rescued Eden's body. Chagai got in touch with Orin, but before he had the chance to come visit, Yehonatan was killed himself. Chagai said that his son barely talked about what he did as a soldier, but that the rescue of Eden's body was an exception, he was that proud. Orin ended up coming to Chagai, to comfort him for his loss. She told him, that he should know how much it mattered, what his son did. That getting closure, by having the funeral for Eden, gave Orin the strength to be able to be there for other grieving families. That the good that his son did for Eden's family, was being paid forward...

Hello. I know my platform is not big, but the more people this reaches, the better it is.

As you might have heard, in Italy there has just been the Sanremo music festival, which is the most famous Italian music festival and is watched live by millions and millions of people on the state tv channel, RAI.

this edition, two singers brought a song against genocide: Dargen D’amico and Ghali.

They both took time after their performance to share words against the war, words for peace, words against genocide without even MENTIONING Isr**l or Palestine. Of course, Rai, being handled by a government who openly supports Isr**l, tried to censor their words but with no success since Italians were quick to make them public, to post them everywhere and to make sure that their intervention wasn’t going to waste.

The worst thing happened just yesterday, during the program DomenicaIn with host Mara Vernier. When Ghali and Dargen went on stage journalists asked them questions about the political point of view of the songs, to which they were happy to answer. Mara Vernier interrupted them quickly as soon as politics were mentioned by saying that “the show was about music, not politics” and that “there wasn’t time to unfold the whole story”. Her mic, however, had been left open and while the singers exit, you can hear her say to the journalists “don’t embarrass me, stop asking questions because this is not the place to talk about this.”

Though apparently, when Mara ended the program by reading a zionist comunicate from RAI that stated how Italy was pro Isr**l. I’m gonna post it here so that you all can see what my shit government stands up for.

“I want to read a statement sent by CEO Roberto Sergio regarding a statement about Israel and Palestine made by an artist during the Sanremo Festival. CEO Roberto Sergio said this: Every day our news and programs tell and will continue to tell, the tragedy of the hostages in the hands of Hamas in addition to remembering the massacre of children, women and men on October 7. My solidarity with the people of Israel and the Jewish Community is heartfelt and convinced. Of course, we all agree with this comunicate.”

Like this, in two seconds they completely ignored what people have been trying to say, what musicians have tried to pass on using a platform as big as Sanremo.

Fortunately, people were not okay with this. You do NOT speak for us Mara, after reading that shameful comunicate, I STAND WITH PALESTINE.

Thank you Dargen D’Amico, for talking about the kids not being protected and how it’s sick that not even the children are shown mercy now. Thank you for your heartbreaking video that you posted along with your song. Thank you for speaking up about genocide for 6 days every time a camera was recording you.

Thank you Ghali, for not even listening to Mara Vernier as she tried to interrupt you during DomenicaIn and just continuing to talk. ICJ CALLS ON ISRAEL TO TAKE MEASURES TO PREVENT CIVILIAN CASUALTIES WITH NO DEMAND FOR A CEASEFIRE

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, Netherlands, has delivered its ruling on South Africa's request for an emergency injunction in its case accusing the Israeli entity of violating its obligations under the Genocide conventions.

The Court ruled that Israel must take steps to further protect civilian lives while conducting its war, however, the ruling stopped short of demanding a full humanitarian ceasefire.

The ICJ said it was "acutely aware" of the massive human tragedy Palestinians are suffering in the Gaza Strip, adding that it was "deeply concerned" by the continued loss of life.

The ICJ's ruling determined the Court retains the authority to order provisional measures against the Israeli occupation authorities for its violations of its responsibilities under the genocide conventions, going so far as to say that at least some of South Africa's accusations against Israel "appear to be capable of falling within provisions of the Genocide convention."

The Court also says the Israeli entity must take "immediate effective measures" to protect Palestinian civilians and avoid committing acts which might fall within the terms of genocide conventions.

In a vote of 15-2, the majority on the Court calls on Israel to take all measures to refrain from the commission of genocidal acts on the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip.

While the Court's decision was not what supporters of Palestine hoped for, the actual merits of the case have not yet been ruled on, which could take as long as a year before a ruling is handed down.

The current ICJ ruling issued today was to determine if the Court would take extraordinary emergency measures to halt Israel's war of genocide, which the Court has decided against doing.

Almost immediately after the Court handed down its ruling, Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir accused the justices on the Court of being "antisemitic" and accusing the Court of not seeking justice, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked his War Cabinet not to comment of the ICJ ruling.

South Africa, for its part, told reporters "we stand with Palestine," and added that "our message to them is to never give up hope."

I know it’s social media and everything? but I do kind of wish that there could be a little nuance around how maybe not every single person in Israel* wants to indiscriminately carpet bomb innocent people in Gaza, and also how maybe not every single person wishing to escape Israeli occupation would like to obliterate their Jewish neighbors, and that the violent deaths of thousands, whether at the hands of terrorists or of right-wing ideologues, is always a fucking tragedy — and that what’s happening right now is a terrible confluence of mismanagement, disinformation, racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and thousands of years of epigenetic trauma, and that it therefore maybe shouldn’t be treated as a zero-sum sportsball game where you can only offer your compassion to one group of people or another as the progressive people of the world all bite each others’ heads off in an ouroboros of virtue-signaling.

I am glad you mentioned of the atrocities that Israel is commiting. I apologize for any ignorance in advance.

At first when news broke out of what Hamas had done, I was on Israel's side of "returning the fire" but I received a notification from your blog and how you spoke about how Palestine is the one that's truly suffering. I was confused because the news wasn't speaking about any of it (I'm in America) but I remembered that the news will only display what the government WANTS us to see.

So I did my own research and learned what Israel is ACTUALLY doing. I've been donating and seeing any other way that I can help Palestine from here.

Israel and USA(this bitch was the only one who did not agree to/vetoes tge UN resolution for a humanitarian pause in Gaza AND also fucking sends billions of dollars of aid to Israel for their military) have been claiming that Hamas "decapitated babies" BUT NOT ONE SINGLE FUCKING TIME HAS THIS CLAIM BEEN PROVED. (Oh and let's all not forget that Israel is a country with high fucking tech and amazing surveillance but not one time has it been able to bring up proof for its claims)

Even if it was true, does it justify the killing of THOUSANDS(over the past few days alone.) OF CIVILIANS, WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND NEWBORNS INCLUDED, BOMBING OF ACTUAL HOSPITALS as revenge?????

So... basically Israel is saying that innocent Palestinian civilians deserve to be "COLLECTIVELY PUNISHED" for Hamas's actions? And if Israel continues to defend themselves by saying that Palestinians are only getting murdered by them because Hamas is using them as human shields, then shouldn't Israel, as a nation that has had first hand experience and history of ethnic cleansing and brutality, ALLOW THE PALESTINIANS IN THEIR COUNTRY TO SEEK REFUGE?????? Make it make sense.

I bet (and I hope I'm wrong) that there's gonna be another major tragedy to a white people country (because no body gives af about poc/minorities) and Israel will make it look like Muslims did it.

I am begging everyone to help Palestinians in any way you can, be it by donating, praying or at the very least.... educate yourself on this matter.

I wanna bring us all back for a sec to 'You indestructible little fucker'

Because a lot of people got hung up on this line, thinking Izzy should have lived, that he survived multiple death attempts and this was the proof he's unkillable. But I really think this line does the exact opposite - it portends his death, and not just that, but his sendoff with Edward.

As I've mentioned before, Izzy is a real pirate in the real world. Throughout season 1 he did not subscribe to the 'muppet logic' of the Revenge crew, and continuing in season 2, his injuries don't miraculously heal like everyone else's, including Ed (whose injuries were fatal and should have left him with a cracked skull and brain damage at the very least). He bears his scars, as other real pirates do. As his character grows, develops, and comes to be welcomed into the community of the Revenge crew, we could say he is 'one foot in' when it comes to reaching muppethood. But figuratively, and quite literally, he can never have both feet in and complete that transformation. That lost leg is his tie to the real, bloody, and unfair world of pirating he belongs to.

Izzy didn't survive those other near-death situations because of muppet-logic. He had tenacity, and grit, and most importantly, skill. He wouldn't be able to shrug off yardies like Roach, or a sword to the gut like Ed - Stede's dream literally involves killing Izzy via stabbing. Izzy is the character that things stick to - he's grounded in reality, in the old ways of pirating that have now burnt to the ground.

When Ed calls him indestructible, it's not because Izzy can't die. It's because Ed sees Izzy as a universal constant in his life. Of course Izzy will get back up every time he falls down - no one gets the better of Israel Hands. And in that moment when Ed had gone well and truly off the rails, it's Izzy who reappears from certain death to rein him back in and save the crew. Ed counts on that back and forth, that other presence, always there - for better or for worse, it's stability, it's reliability, it's his normal. Whether or not Ricky was right when he said Izzy was the genius behind the operation, we know that Edward and Izzy together formed 'Blackbeard.' Ed thinks he can't kill Izzy in a way that matters - and he didn't ever kill Izzy himself, he left it to Frenchie and then later gave Izzy the pistol.

But that's where it circles back around to the finale. Ed couldn't fathom Izzy actually dying - he's indestructible. He doesn't know what he'd do without him. It leaves Ed in the vulnerable position of being on his own, figuratively - independent, with no one over his shoulder providing guidance, directing him, or nudging him to be one thing or another. But Izzy tells him, you're ready now. And he is. Izzy isn't invincible, and Edward doesn't need him, doesn't need to hide behind the cold, distant, impenetrable veneer of Blackbeard anymore.

If Izzy could have become a true muppet, he would have brushed off that bullet. But that's not who and what he is - not narratively, and not literally either - he himself says it; "Pirating? Well, this is a pirate ship, and I'm a pirate. So, yeah, I'm good with it." Edward is leaving pirating behind, but it's all Izzy's ever known and it's what he wants to continue being - a real pirate in the real world, and thus, one that faces real consequences and can't keep cheating death. It's a tragedy Ed needed to see, that sometimes, things don't turn out alright - not everyone sails off into the sunset. Some stay behind to run an inn, facing an uncertain but hopeful future with vulnerability and free will, which are both daunting for Edward. Others die a pirate's death - but not without imparting necessary wisdom first.
