I love A Hope in Hell, because in both plotlines there really isn’t a hope in hell of either person surviving/remaining free - Dream couldn’t possibly defeat someone as powerful as Lucifer, and Rosemary was doomed as soon as she crossed paths with John Dee, and yet both of them survive and actually gain something from the risks they took. This episode and The Sound of Her Wings form sort of the perfect hopeful bookends around 24/7, with ep 4 still somehow managing to menacingly lead up to it.

Sandman EP 1x04 *SPOILERS*
In the duel between Lucifer and Dream, I like how Lucifer used forms that they are probably VERY familiar with.
A Wolf,
a Serpent,
a Plague,
Fire From On High,
and the Anti-Life (Beast of Judgement, the Dark at the End of Everything.)
Oh yeah, Luci seemed REAL comfortable embodying all those things.
(On a separate note, Dream’s forms were ALSO very thematic. A mounted hunter who embodies the taming of beasts, a bird of prey who embodies flight, a world which embodies life and nurturing, a universe which accepts and embraces all-
And Hope.)

‘The Sandman’ season 1, episode 4 in conversation: ‘A Hope in Hell’
In The Sandman episode 4, the viewer finds themselves hovering over Morpheus and Matthew on their journey to Lucifer’s throne room in Hell, and huddling in the back seat of an old station wagon during a very tense road trip. Read on for our in-depth discussion of The Sandman episode 4, “A Hope in Hell.”
Natalie: So when Lucifer is talking about allying with the Dreaming, I’m thinking, what does Lucifer really feel about Dream and his power? And I asked this [of Christie at SDCC.] I asked, does she think Lucifer is jealous of Dream? Is there resentment and jealousy among the superiority?
She said that “I think that Lucifer is simultaneously laissez faire about every single person, every single creature, every single entity, and simultaneously is consumed with jealousy and shame. Consumed with it. Because going from being God’s chosen one, God’s favorite angel, to live a life entirely of punishment, you have very little.”
So perhaps the power is rather meaningless. Which is something that is a pretty important factor for another Lucifer plot down the line.

Sandman 3-5
Sandman episode liveblogs coming up! I’ve finished the series yesterday and deep in hyperfocus hell. I have notes for all of the episodes (sometimes I watched while eating dinner and didn’t take notes until after though) but I need to type them up. Might not do all of them today, but here you get three! I watched these in one go as well.
3:
Darling 'accident' this big happening twice is a strong indication it's not an accident
Joanna seems very by-the-book noir detective except instead in horror this time
Complete with tragic backstory. I knew it.
I do prefer the delightfully creepy dream Jo had and the withering woman to the blood splatter and flesh on the walls, but I do love john's mannerisms when reacting to the carnage. Or not-reacting sometimes.
He always looks pouty I like it (morpheus)
I hope you'll handle the new one as a bonus tho (about Jo’s nightmares)
4:
John seems to be getting creepier by the minute
GC makes a delightful Lucifer Morningstar - dignified, graceful, regal, full of malice. Every gesture both full of purpose and subtle nuance. Such great acting.
The horror is ON
Rosemary oh hon… I like her…
Poor dear
Dream looks awkward even when standing still
Their makeup department A+ work… aging, poisons, disease, burns, what can’t they do???
Matthew good pep talk but sadly I was already spoiled for this I wish I could know how it had hit without it
Rosemary got The protective amulet??? That I didn't expect
Is dream out of commision for now? Does Matthew or someone need to get the ruby
5:
What's with The Diner of interpersonal drama
Bette what.
The camera angles tho so good
Judy seems so sweet I like her don't ruin her
Looping??? I love loops but goddamn I pity these people
but the mood stays huh
Poor mark don’t put him into this position
Marsh is the most sane person here... (five seconds later) Or not...
Mark please don't
New trophy husband incoming
Diner of interpersonal drama was an understatement
This level of horniness is out of this world it Hurts My Ace sensibilities
Yeah saw that coming
John quit you voyeur
But he is very relatable eating ice cream while horny people are off in their own worlds
Oh no kate
Oh no Mark
Oh no Garry
Betty big brain are you sure talking to HIM is safe tho
Oh no Mark
Oh stop stop stop
Ow I'm not sure I can handle this Alone
Right question dream
John is so crazy but I see a little why he's like that. What with his mother and his childhood of never being the same people for long.
Good scene with their dreams. (the dreams of proving his father wrong etc scene)
Burgess House?
Show a little More Leg why don't you
Huh I like that ending. I was expecting it to end worse but it was actually kind of cathartic.
Crap I have to go to work now no time for next Episode I’ve heard good things about it

lucifer losing against morpheus because they can’t counter his “i am hope.” and the following “what power would hell have if those imprisoned were not able to dream of heaven?” it makes me wanna scream, because of course!
hell’s first prisoner was its ruler. and they too dream of going home one day. and they can’t give up that hope. this dream is what gives hell power.
