1974, Glasgow, UK - Queen at the Queen Margaret Union, University of Glasgow
Freddie Mercury casually holding Moyra’s leg
(during 'Queen II Tour')
Jake Scott says: "At the time the Uni had a male students' Union (GUU) and a Female Students' Union (QMU). Queen played at the female union. Later both Unions became unisex. I was a president at the QMU in the early 90s and when clearing out old filing cabinets found the actual contract of this gig in the Ents drawer. The fee the band paid [to rent the hall] was around £320."

On this date in music history…
July 19th
2022 - Queen
Queen made UK chart history when they become the first act ever to reach 7 million UK chart sales of an album with their 1981 Greatest Hits album. The Official best-selling album of all time in the UK, the record includes such classic tracks as 'We Will Rock You', 'Don’t Stop Me Now' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' The record also recently celebrated its 1000th week on the Official Albums Chart, with Queen becoming the first British act ever to achieve this landmark milestone.
1993 - Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against The Machine walked out on stage naked at their Lollapalooza set in Philadelphia in a protest against censorship by appearing completely nude except for black electrical tape over their mouths. They stood in protest for their full 15 allocated minutes of stage time with the letters PMRC written on their chests, a reference to the Parents Music Resource Center.
1991 - Steven Adler
Steven Adler ex drummer with Guns N' Roses filed a suit in Los Angeles county court alleging that he was fraudulently removed from the group and that the band introduced him to hard drugs.
1987 - Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen played his first ever show behind the Iron Curtain when he appeared in East Berlin in front of 180,000 people. The show was broadcast on East German TV.
1986 - Peter Gabriel
Genesis went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Invisible Touch'. The bands former lead singer Peter Gabriel was at No.2 with 'Sledgehammer'.
1976 - David Coverdale
Deep Purple split up at the end of an UK tour. David Coverdale went on to form Whitesnake, Jon Lord and Ian Paice formed a band with Tony Ashton. The classic line up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord & Paice reformed in 1984. Glenn Hughes returned to Trapeze and Tommy Bolin put together his own band, (but would die before the end of the year).
1974 - Ozark Music Festival
The Ozark Music Festival was held over three days on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. One of the largest music festivals ever held, some estimates have put the crowd count at 350,000 people. Acts who appeared included, Bachman–Turner Overdrive, Blue Öyster Cult, the Eagles, America, Marshall Tucker Band, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Boz Scaggs, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd,Electric Flag, Joe Walsh, Aerosmith and Spirit.
1954 - Elvis Presley
Sun Records released the first Elvis Presley single, 'That's All Right', a cover of Arthur Crudup's 1946 tune 'That's All Right, Mama'. Only about 7,000 original copies were pressed, but the disc became a local hit in Memphis.

Happy New Year 2024!!
1/1/24: So here we are, the last New Year of this blog. I do intend to carry on after my 50th birthday in a couple weeks, but not after a long break... I've been doing this for free for six and a half years and I have other things I need to attend to. Regarding 1974, it's kind of a lousy year for both Pop and Rock... I think the Boomers just kinda gave up thinking and gave in to the lounge life, getting high, drunk, and everything in between... sort of a Disco mentality before Disco. Interestingly, it was quite the opposite year for film, with some of the greatest movies ever made coming out in 1974 (Blazing Saddles, Chinatown, Godfather Part II, etc.). Anyway, the MUSIC... like I said everyone seemed to be coasting: Zeppelin took a year off, as did The Who and Pink Floyd; the Stones put out maybe their first 'meh' record since the mid-1960s (when record companies were breaking up their records for maximum profit). McCartney was still riding high with Band on the Run, as was Black Sabbath with Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath... Prog in the UK was dying a prolonged death (whose sound began spawning imitators over in this hemisphere, most of which sucked pretty hard) as Yes would put out a lousy record and EL&P took three years off. The best stuff came from a lot of second tier artists: Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, Neil Young, David Bowie (his last as Ziggy), ELO, and Budgie. Perhaps the best album of 1974 belongs to the British Prog-ish group Supertramp, whose third album Crime of the Century most certainly drew Dark Side of the Moon comparisons... a must listen, if you listen to anything from this year at all. Second best: BOC's Secret Treaties. Third best: Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic (not as good as Countdown but still excellent). Fourth best: Aerosmith Get Your Wings. Alex Chilton of Big Star would have quite a productive year as well, releasing one Big Star record (we'll do it) and creating tunes for another (that wouldn't be released until 1978). Some of the new kids on the block include: Rush, although this is before Neil Peart joins for their second album on drums and lyrics, so here you are dealing with mostly a Canadian Zeppelin copycat band (although 'Working Man' and 'In the Mood' are bona-fide Rock Classics); Bad Company, which is basically Free reborn with better production and was the first non-Zeppelin band on Swan Song records... tis okay; Kiss, whose legend speaks for itself; and the bassist for the Stones, Bill Wyman, with a surprisingly excellent solo debut, Monkey Grip. Some of my favorite songs from this year include 'Doraville' by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, 'In For the Kill' by Budgie, 'Dreamer' by Supertramp, 'Fingerprint File' by the Stones, 'Astral Man' by Nektar, '(theme from) Death Wish' by Herbie Hancock, and 'Feel Good' by Fancy (whose instrumental bridge was used on many '80s rap samples)... kind of a mish-mosh, eh? Perhaps the worst offender of 1974 was 'The Night Chicago Died' by Paper Lace... P.U.!!!... recommend you watch YouTuber Todd In the Shadows' take on this tune; 'You're Having My Baby' by Paul Anka is a close second in disgraceful tunes. This year we hear perhaps the first true Disco singles, including 'The Hustle' by Van McCoy, 'Pick Up the Pieces' by the Average White Band, 'Machine Gun' by the Commodores, and 'TSOP' by MFSB. Also, more proto-Punk and just overall weirdness by the likes of the New York Dolls, Sparks, and the Residents. I could go on and on... it's like the malaise President Jimmy Carter spoke about later in the decade kinda starts here, particularly with the economy (first real recession since late 1950s) and politics (see: Nixon, Richard... Watergate). The year also spawns some of the most ridiculous fashion of the era, as well as very long hair for mainstream men and mustaches... lots of mustaches, which men really hadn't worn stylishly since the late 1940s (even then they were very thin... see Walt Disney). Okay out of space... enjoy!

Photos from 'The Disco Files 1973–78: New York's Underground, Week by Week' by Vince Aletti (with interview by Fran Lebowitz) — back in stock from D.A.P. Publishing! In 1973, Aletti became the first person to write about the emerging disco scene. His engagement with disco nightlife continued throughout the decade as he wrote his weekly column for 'Record World' magazine, which incorporated top ten playlists from DJs across the US (such as Larry Levan, Larry Sanders, Walter Gibbons, Tee Scott and Nicky Siano) alongside Aletti's own writings and interviews. As disco grew from an underground secret to a billion-dollar industry, Aletti was there to document it, and 'The Disco Files' is his personal memoir of those days, containing everything he wrote on the subject (most of it between 1974 and1978) augmented with photography by Peter Hujar and Toby Old. This book is the definitive and essential chronicle of disco, true from-the-trenches reporting that details, week by week, the evolution of the clubs, the DJs, and above all, the music, through magazine articles, beautiful photographs, hundreds of club charts and thousands of record reviews. Pictured here: 1. 15 March 1974 - Queen play at the Queen Margaret Union, University of Glasgow, UK, with Nutz as support band, Queen II Tour. 🇬🇧
Jake Scott says: “At the time the Uni had a male students' Union (GUU) and a Female Students' Union (QMU). Queen played at the female union. Later both Unions became unisex. I was a president at the QMU in the early 90s and when clearing out old filing cabinets found the actual contract of this gig in the Ents drawer. The fee the band paid was around £320 (I can't quite remember).”
🙌🏻 Fan stories 💛
“Me and my mate managed to get signed in by two lovely Dental Sudents. Cheap booze, never went to Uni but this stuff was very cheap. Two support bands, I recall the second was Nutz, great guitarist... did the bit behind the head. Queen had a few issues with the sound and did not get on stage till around 1:00 in the morning, Father to Son end up Fu#@#' a few times but it did start and they were magic. The stage was one foot high. Easy access and this kid did that on stage with his Queen album cover and standing with Brian while he played. The night went fast and they were great. We then left and walked back to Glasgow Central Train station at about 4:00, tried to sleep and then got told that Queen had stayed behind to do autographs, what a band. Got the train home at 7:00 and looked forward to their next tour which I went to. And all because I love Mott the Hoople, saw Queen the year before at the Apollo, loved them since that day. (Ian)
“For what it's worth I wanted to repeat a story I heard tonight in a bar from DJ in Hamilton (just outside Glasgow, Scotland). He said he saw Queen play in Queen Margaret Union in what he thought was 1972 (seemingly 1974). He was a DJ in the downstairs bar and somebody he knew told him to drop what he was doing because he just HAD to see the lead singer of the band who were playing upstairs who happened to be Queen. The lead singer was apparently "mental" in a good way, as in amazing. The room was packed beyond belief and he remembers they played Seven Seas of Rhye or something that sounded like it anyway. Best of all he has the ticket stub from the gig as he has saved every stub from every gig he has ever been to which includes early Bowie gigs etc. Thats all I've got - I only struck up a casual/brief chat after requesting he play Queen before I left the bat to get a curry. But I was well chuffed to meet someone who saw Queen before they became huge. Come to think of it though I did get to know someone who knew Mike Bersin really well and I felt good just having that tenuous link.” (Colin McQuaid)
