Couldve just drawn different outfits but I wanted to add a bit of atmosphere with them. Took the opportunity to try two different ways of coloring and compare them, kinda, one with blended colors and soft edges and the other one with no blending or blurring

Okay, the way I hear people all too often talk about Mercedes's time-skip haircut genuinely pisses me off. Yes, her haircut is indeed less attractive now; that is almost entirely the whole point of it. Mercedes starts off the game as the pawn of a social-climbing merchant who bullied/bribed a church into letting him adopt her, and he plans to use her as a stepping stone to higher status by marrying her off to a noble family. It's in his interest that she look as conventionally attractive as possible, and her hair is a big part of that. It's long, pretty, well-groomed, conventionally feminine in a way that most men who swing that way find appealing.

As of the five-year interim before Part 2, Mercedes is still struggling with passivity, but she's never been afraid of this guy, and her resolve is slowly growing. She does not want to be forced into an arranged marriage, and so she's going to look to any small thing she can do to sabotage her chances of winding up engaged or married off.

So she hacks off most of her hair in a very simple, unattractive haircut and hides what remains under a cap and veil. In a stroke, she's made herself less attractive to men, both in-universe and out of it, considering all of the men on Youtube I've heard complain about how "ugly" she is post time-skip. They claim to be her fans, but if they are her fans then I wish they'd spend some time actually thinking about why she would want to cut her hair like that, instead of just complaining about it.

As a side note, the number of comments I've heard about how much "nicer" she looks in Three Hopes are just galling, because her long hair there is symbolic of the fact that she's still stuck under her adoptive father's thumb and never arrives at the point where she's willing to strike out on her own, expectations be damned--she's still resigned to being forced into an arranged marriage in Three Hopes, full of the expectation that that will crush her dreams of living life the way she wants to.

i wanted to draw her little "uniform" and Moxie which was the lil weapon she finds and names to sabotage an entire ship lol.

contextually in Fire Ship she loses Voyager, watches it explode while being stuck in a small busted little pod and unable to do anything about it. (her hair and uniform catches on fire and a lot of her body gets burned, PRETTY sure this is the s4 haircut lore) so she's on her own adrift in a pod in the DQ, full of guilt. eventually an alien crew takes her in, she's the only girl onboard in a crew of around 100 young boys, she works as a deckhand, etc etc. oh also their alien culture likes to shorten names, so she lists off a few shortenings of "kathryn" and they land on "Kay" and that's what they call her hehe. im not done with the book but i LOOOOOOOOVE it so far. :)
