Barbie movie is a trans narrative. let me elaborate. She's living an unbothered, perfect life where everyone likes her and she gets to be in charge, and she's part of a group of people who call the shots simply for who they are. But something dawns on her, a realization that it's not all perfect, and she's not all perfect, and she's scared. she's scared because if she looks at it too closely, it may all start to crumble and fall apart, and she doesn't want things to change, she wants to keep her good life. but once the egg is cracked, there's no going back - she has to face the truth. so she goes into the real world and learns what it means to be a woman there. it's horrible. the catcalls, the sexism, everything stacked against her for the first time in her life. it's not right and she knows it. and she tries to go back, tries to flee back into her perfect world, but it's not the same anymore, everything is touched by the grim reality of the real world now. she's miserable, and she hates it, and she fights hard to get back her former life because she hates change. and yes, she manages to restore balance in Barbieland, and that could be the end of it, but it isn't.

No, instead, she realizes that there's no turning back. the change has already happened inside of her, and yes it's hard, and yes, the real world can be cruel. but it can also be wonderful, and there can be joy there, and sisterhood, and self-expression. this barbie was the stereotypical version of her assigned gender all her life, an unattainable caricature of it, really, and once she understands that, she cannot and does not want to go back. No, she wants to be a woman in the real world. She wants it even despite everything she has learned. losing power and status, putting up with sexism and misogyny every day, none of that weighs up against the chance to find out who she really is. if that's not the trans joy of coming out to yourself, I don't know what it is.

the manner in which the minecraft end poem uses it/its pronouns for the reader interspersed with the occasional they/them makes me feel so many things and all of those things are good. every kind of good rolled into one. a very special kind of happy and giddy and cared for and seen at once. loved. hopeful.
