Before I run off to reply to comments and write for today... Can I take a second to talk about Fit's song choices last night? In particular, We'll Meet Again. Because he's always very intentional, so I'm sure he knows the history around the song.
I don't know how well known it is in America, but it's a very famous song in the UK. It was released early in the second world war and performed by a woman named Vera Lynn (known as The Forces Sweetheart, later made a Dame). It is for obvious reasons heavily associated with soliders going to war and making promises to their darlings - and also their families, promising to wait for them back.
Which... Okay you do get enough of this from the lyrics, but also in context - WW2 in the UK was conscription based. Every man 18-41 who was not exempt due to medical conditions or being in protected work (critical infrastructure design/repair, medicine, some farming and food-based jobs, etc). Those with moral or religious exemptions were required to argue their cases in court. Generally speaking, though, 'every man' is the assumption.
Certainly, a man like Fit would be required to go.

I'll not forget you, sweetheart
And thus we come to my analysis of it - Fit knows he doesn't have a choice but to continue with the very dangerous mission he's been put on, and to complete it. He has his deadline, and he has his task, and he has the threats looming over him. Backing out is not an option. Staying with Pac and Ramon (and Mike and Tubbo and Phil and everyone else) is not an option. He has to leave them, and he has to comply with the demands of someone with more control than he.
But, for all he likely won't fully explain himself, he's not abandoning them. He doesn't mean to hurt them, he doesn't want them to be destroyed, he doesn't want to loose them.

He's not saying goodbye forever - he knows he might die, and knows he will be irrecoverably changed - but he's not saying goodbye. He's promising he'll remember, he's promising he'll come back, he's promising this isn't the end, but also...
Fit's asking them to wait for him, to wait for his deeds to be done, to forgive him what he is being forced to do, to love each other in his stead and to be there when he returns.
It's just a question of if they will or not.

fckin. i've watched Tin Can Bros' masterpiece Spies are Forever a bajillion times. I've listened to the soundtrack a bajllion times. when my phone malfunctioned and I lost all the music I downloaded from my dad's giant folder of pirated mp3s, the fuckin Spies Are Forever soundtrack was one of the 3 albums that remained bc it was one of the only ones I'd actually bought. which means i listened to it over and over and over until I was able to get student-discounted Spotify (and tbh i do still listen to it over and over, just on Spotify).
and I JUST NOW realized that Curt's beard from the 4 years after Owen's death is a double entendre.
the only other queer person he knew in his line of work just fucking died. of course he gets a beard.

Minor throwaway sentence in a book on corruption I've just finished was talking about 1930s gangsters and about certain organisations in Chicago which the author stated were more ethnically diverse than the Italian mafia, and whose members were said to have included 'Irish, Welsh, Italian, and Jewish' gangsters.
Now call me sheltered but I've seen MANY Italian American gangsters immortalised in film, I've heard of the Jewish mob, and the police Irish American gangs but I have yet to see a movie about the Welsh mob. As a rule I don't go in for gangster movies but I feel there's an unfilled niche here and also I need more info.
#Might delete this in a bit#On a more serious note given the context of the Great Depression and slumps in the coal mining districts of Britain#I can see why Welsh people who emigrated to America might be form an impoverished immigrant community targeted by organised crime#And possibly my surprise comes from outdated national stereotypes and the fact that popular stereotypes of 1930s gangsters#Rarely include immigrant groups that are largely Protestant (at least in the US- in Glasgow and London it's a different story)#Makes me wonder if all those Catholic Aesthetics that directors who make movies about Italian and Irish mobsters are so fond of#Would play the same with Meredith Davies who may be a crook but at least he regularly attends the Methodist chapel#And is a teetotaller and a fixture in various choirs#Welsh accents are often quite soft too I think I'd be fucking terrified of a Welsh gangster in a movie tbh#To be fair real life organised crime obviously encompassed people from all walks of life I'm more interested in movie depictions here#'More Welsh representation!'
