We need to make The Basic Eight part of coquette literature alongside things like The Virgin Suicides and My Year Of Rest And Relaxation. It’s got everything: a morally grey, mentally unstable and likably unlikeable female protagonist, great outfit descriptions, murder, and surprisingly deep and complex musings on feminism and the nature of girlhood. It’s perfect .

There'll be spoilers if I go into details, but I think those of you who enjoyed Daniel Handler's The Basic Eight might enjoy Shirley Jackson's Hangsaman.

I’ve just discovered that there are a multigenerational group of senior teachers in my school who are obsessed with The Secret History but they haven’t even started an exclusive secret society of the most intelligent and high-achieving students in the school or anything. Words cannot even describe how much I resent the adults and especially the teachers in this world.
