“I used to be a marine”, he says, before he can think better of it. And when he does think better of it, well. He’s already said it.

Next to him, he can feel Shanks tensing up. He leaves him ample time to cut him off, half relieved when the redhead stays silent. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees him idly tracing the neck of the bottle they’ve emptied.

“I didn’t join out of some misplaced faith or sense of justice”, he feels the need to point out, his father’s stern face at the back of his mind. “I joined because my brother did”.

To have an excuse to get out of home, too. With Calugurul about to be shipped off, he hadn’t been too eager to find out if he could withstand the full scope of their father’s attention alone.

“We were… close, my brother and I”, he continues. And then, because it feels cheap to encompass their relationship with just that: “He taught me to fight. Gave me my first sword”.

Back when Yoru doubled him in height and he couldn’t fathom how his brother managed to wield it when he himself had trouble raising a simple steel sword.

“He did have faith in the cause”, he says after a moment. Under the night sky, Yoru stays black and void. Even the reflection of the small bonfire they’ve built evades it. “Quickly gained the trust of peers… and superiors”.

The back of his throat tastes bitter. Why is he doing this? He doesn’t owe Shanks a single thing. Why is he wasting his time trying to appease the redhead’s stupid insecurity about him not joining his crew?

He sighs.

“My skills in combat kept me by his side through all of it. That is, until Gyorgy Thurzo became our captain”.

Rudy's favourite nickname for Mini is jaan. It means life, but it's also a reassurance for the daughter of death. A child who's so well-acquainted with her father in one of the worst ways. She's surrounded by death every day— she sees it in her patients, she herself had to protect them from death several times. He could see it wearing down on her, that shadow of death dimming her bright spark of light, so he decided to whisper that nickname. In an unguarded moment, when she laughed freely, hiding a perpetual sadness. She was confused, and she asked her question with a laugh: "Why that nickname? I hope you're aware you sound like every main character of every Bollywood movie,"

He just smiles and buries his face in the crook of her neck, saying, "Well, it's true, you are jaan."

She just snickered, calling him sappy and cringey, but he couldn't help but notice how she brightened every time he called her that. Like a spark turning into a new flame.

I love dumb nicknames. Especially if they come from inside jokes and I love dumb inside jokes, especially if they’ve gone on so long they’ve kind of lost meaning.

So of course I have the boys give each other dumb nicknames in the modern AU. I also gave them surnames and some will have middle names cause I said so They all have nicknames that the others give them. I don’t have all of them yet but I had to get these figured out because they cropped up in a drabble and I couldn’t keep them straight after it hit a certain word count. So this is what I got -

Hyrule’s nicknames:

Twilight calls him DoDo, because he calls him (Twi) DiDi. They think it’s funny.

Wild calls him Maps, from an inside joke between the two of them (they get lost even WITH maps).

Sky calls him Dori.

Legend calls him Cam, which is short for Camera boy.

Legend’s nicknames:

Wild calls him Post, like Postman but claims man doesn’t suit him so shortens it.

Hyrule calls him Gogo, because he never stops going (moving, talking, etc).

Twi and Sky call him Bunny due to an inside joke that all three refuse to explain.

Wild’s nicknames:

Legend, Sky, and Twi all call him some combo of Wild and something else.

Hyrule calls him Waze, cause it’s a maps app and it plays into their dumb joke.

Sky’s nicknames:

Twi calls him Noxie.

Legend and Hyrule call him Sky.

Wild calls him Myr and claims it’s short for Murder (it’s obviously not).

Twilight’s nicknames:

Sky calls him Evie.

Hyrule calls him DiDi.

Legend calls him crybaby and, more often, Seals (“cause he was blubbering like one” all the time).

Wild calls him Buggy, cause of a dumb joke about shopping carts.

friend, you’ve opened a door i don’t think can be closed 😭

so, ghost team is from the new rebooted modern warfare trilogy, specifically the 2nd and 3rd game. it mainly refers to the four main guys who are sas soldiers known as task force 141: price, gaz, soap and the titular ghost aka the one with the skull mask (but can also mean their allies in the games, specifically alejandro and rudy known as los vaqueros). price and gaz are in the first game, mw 2019, but soap and ghost are only introduced in mw2 2022

ghost team itself comes from mw2 2022 when price and gaz meet up with soap, ghost, alejandro and rudy and they do an unsanctioned, illegal mission together. as price says: “we are not 141 and los vaqueros on this. we’re a team. ghost team.”

as to what i like about it… whew boy

so, there’s three parts of the game: the campaign, multiplayer mode and zombies mode and i’m all about the campaigns. they don’t have the tightest plots in the world but the characters and their relationships more than make up for them

mw2 is my main game and in it, soap teams up with ghost to hunt down a terrorist and find missiles he’s stolen. ghost is a lieutenant and soap’s superior and he’s scarily professional; he will get the job done no matter what and that makes him seem cold and harsh and distant (one of his most well known lines is “choices have consequences” after soap pushed him to help their allies instead of continuing to pursue their target). soap is a steadfast sergeant, a soldier through and through but he will buck - not reject, just push back - against orders he’s unsure of. if you saw my soap meta post, i have a lot to say about him lmao

they end up in mexico working with a mercenary group and mexican special forces (alejandro and rudy) and one thing leads to another and soap and ghost end up separated; soap’s injured without any weapons and they’re being hunted throughout the town of las almas. since ghost is, well, ghost, you expect him to leave soap behind; soap probably won’t make it and the mission is time sensitive. but ghost stays; he hunkers down and waits and guides soap through the town on their comms. he teaches him guerrilla warfare, how to make weapons out of random objects, keeps his head on straight with dark jokes when he starts to falter (“what has two legs and bleeds?” “don’t tell me.” “half a dog.” “i asked you not to tell me.”)

ghost keeps him going and when they finally get back together (“alright, johnny; you made it.” “we made it, lt.”) and get to a safehouse, rudy asks where they were. soap says, “i was on the run; ghost waited for me.” rudy then says, “of course, no?” soap immediately says no just for ghost to cut him off and say, “yes. we’re a team, all of us. this happened on my watch and i’ll need help to fix it. no one fights alone.”

like are you kidding me??

and that’s just soap and ghost and that’s just one mission. price and gaz and their relationship to each other is just as complex and rich and all of it makes me want to dig into them and know more
