My favorite movies and shows of 2022:
2022 was a terrible year so here’s my favorite escapisms of the year.
1. The Sandman Netflix series. I only read The Sandman for the first time in 2017 and I immediately wanted more. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to wait for an adaptation since 1988. My wait was only five years.
2. The invitation The best new Dracula film I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s just frustrating that the movie does the coy thing of never calling him Dracula out loud but you’re supposed to figure it out from very blatant clues... and there are some viewers who somehow didn’t catch on... It’s low budget but very atmospheric and it was quite simply my favorite film of 2022. It was the best new Gothic Horror film I’ve seen in a long time.
3. Wednesday. I loved Wednesday. It was a nice revival of both The Addams Family (paying respect to all previous incarnations of The Addams Family) and also seeing Tim Burton return to form. Many people say it doesn’t feel like Tim Burton but I think they’re just not used to when Tim Burton actually had quality. I hadn’t seen a Tim Burton production quite like this since 2005′s Corpse Bride.
4. Hocus Pocus 2. Though perhaps not as good as the original, there was a lot of welcome Nostalgia and some polite nods to non-evil / Wiccan-style magick and witchcraft, such as having the main heroes be three teenage girls who practice benign, nature-respecting Wiccan witchcraft. There were also two new song numbers. The Witches Are Back (to the tune of Sir Elton John’s The Bitch’s back). And the Hocus Pocus re-working of One way or Another.
5. The Witcher Season 2 and The Witcher Blood Origin. This is sort of a cheat since The Witcher Season 2 came out December 2021 but it came out so late in the year it might as well have been 2022. And I’m putting Witcher: Blood Origin on here just for Jaskier’s two scenes and the new songs, “Song of the Seven.” and “The Black Rose” though I wish Joey Batey sang a version of The Black Rose.
6. Morbius. Yes, it’s cheesy. Yes, it’s full of cliches but ...that’s how Morbius was in the comics. My only qualms about it is that the movie never establishes that he’s immortal and weirdly Jared Leto’s portrayal of Doctor Michael Morbius is surprisingly subdued. The character (in the comics) was a bit of a ham.
7. The anime “The Vampire Dies in No Time.” After my grandfather passed away last January I needed something playful where I could just shut my brain off for a while and this anime about an incompetent vampire (who dies if you just look at him funny) and his weird friendship with a vampire hunter, and his familiar Armadillo (subtle joke based on Bela Lugosi’s Dracula) was a welcome distraction.
8. Dracula: The original living vampire. This is not a good movie at all. It was just Asylum's shameless knock-off of both Morbius and The Invitation (mostly Morbius). The only fun thing about it is watching it and trying to figure out what time period it's set in.
Not much else caught my interest in 2022...

I don't think much has changed. Other than his way of expressing his interests and intentions. This man is much more emotionally unavailable.
Jonathan was the, "I believe in science and logic" kind of guy. Was for a reason. After saving him from Batman with magick, he was honestly in shock. The fuck? Even the "Scarecrow" side of him is confused as hell.
I wonder how they would be terrified. How exciting!
"Shut up.." He mumbles. He just want to gather his thoughts in peace. When you show him more of what you're capable of. His first thought isn't, "wow that's so interesting and cool!" He finds it interesting, but he's more like, "how interesting. They can be useful."
At first he just planned on using you for his plans and research. But as you two worked together, he started to fall in love. He hated it. He should kill them. No. Confess? God no. Avoid them and be cold towards them? Yeah.
He kind of appreciates the help. He likes that you save his ass when things go wrong. You help out with his plans, heal him, makes sure he doesn't go to the Arkham Asylum.
He isn't fully ignoring what you do. He shows his appreciation in small ways, just don't point it out.
"Sorry to bother you Mr. Crane, but do you happen to know where the eggshells are at?"
"You've left them in kitchen next to the pantry." He spoke in a monotone voice as he wrote things down in his journal, not even looking up at you.
He called your name. You look up from one of your many books with a hm in response.
"I believe you'll need this if you ever plan on using that spell." He knows about the spell? Don't call him out. Why?
"You know about it? Have you've been doing some researching?" He'll scowl and scoff.
"You've been talking non stop about it. I am simply reminding you." He'll be cold towards you for a few days. He's not used to these kind of things.
While he's out shopping, with or without you (usually with you), he'll get things you'll need for your witchy activities. He won't admit it but he is getting them for you. He also won't admit it but he enjoys your company and when you ramble about your work.
"Oh, you need those?"
"Yes. I'm running out."
"They're really good for..."
He'll act annoyed or act like he's toning you out. Jonathan won't take notes or research, but he will remember certain things. Ok maybe he'll search up a few potions and spells. And he might come to you and ask if you know them. He's hinting for you to use them.
Ok so maybe he's interested and finds it cool. Just a little bit but that's really it. He'll be much more..supportive..? When he's in a relationship with you.
He brings his s/o to more missions by his side. He doesn't lie about getting you stuff for your work while he's out. He doesn't say anything. He'll just place them down on your workspace. When you look up at him, he just stares down.
"It's for you." Jonathan walks off. Nothing more. He's trying his best, give him some time!
In general, he's really supportive in his own way and he's getting better the longer he's with his witch s/o. You do a lot for him and he's returning the favor slowly in his own way.

Fiona has a yellowing bug-eaten collage of thousands of newspaper and magazine articles papering the walls. They’re reviews, all of them. Good, bad, indifferent, if they mention Pitch music, Fiona puts them up. Then, if she disagrees with or dislikes the tone of an article, she pulls out her handy black felt tip and scribbles expletives and insults all over the paper. So the first impression you get of Fiona is of a mad woman scribbling on the walls of her asylum.

Baz’s best friend is smaller than I expected. I think, from the way he’s built her up in my imagination, I expected to be eye to eye with her.
Actually, she’s at least four or five inches shorter than me. But that doesn’t mean she’s not intimidating.
Fuck, she is so intimidating.
The first words out of her mouth when we take seats across from her at Costa are, “So. This is him, then?” She's looking at me, but speaking to Baz. Her cool gaze makes it clear that she isn't interested in speaking to me.
Fuck. Somehow I’ve messed this up before I’ve even said hello.

It was Simon’s idea that the school should be open to all magickal creatures. After all, he pointed out, if it was going to accept our children, part dragon as they were, it would hardly make sense to deny pixie and goblin and troll children.
Hence my problem with Mrs. Dalrimple.
She’s a brownie. A kitchen sprite. Which means she is naturally better than me at absolutely everything involving home care. And it stings when all the parents are socializing and she looks down her nose at me (which is quite a trick, since she’s two feet tall) because I let Violet wear her favorite tutu to school again or because Ebb’s school lunch is always peanut butter sandwiches (what? That’s all she’ll eat! I’d rather she be malnourished than not nourished at all) (besides, peanut butter is really quite nutritious if you overlook the high sugar content).
Simon knows about and is amused by my unspoken rivalry with the PTA chair, so all he does is smirk and shake his head.

I smother my laughter. Penelope Bunce does not appreciate being laughed at. Which is a real shame, because she’s so much fun to laugh at. But I love her, and, more importantly, I live with her, so it behoves me to keep her happy. Or at least keep her less homicidal.
So Simon needs help showing Baz a little romance, hmm? That shouldn’t surprise me—the man has far more rough edges than smooth ones. But somehow, it does. Surprise me, I mean. Simon Snow has, since he first broke an antique chair and threatened to impale the vampire king with its leg, has done nothing but impress me with the depth of his devotion to Baz. And nothing is more romantically intoxicating than giving someone your complete attention.

She has bounced through mental asylums her whole life, the reason? Witnessing her mother's death as a young child. Nobody wants a broken child on the spectrum it seems. And finally, after so many years she begins to question herself and finds a fairy has stolen her locket! Leading her down a odd rabbit hole and into a dark decrepit house. She escapes only to be in her false doctors clutches. She finds she had been gone for hours when she was there only seconds. She begins to realize that being an Alice isn't a lie. Wonderland isn't simply a fairy tale. And the Mad Hatter is more then what he appears to be.
About the author: Nancy grew up in Oregon under horrific settings that caused her to write out her pain and unimaginable torture. Books and movies seemed to be her only way out of reality and PTSD. She writes to escape the torment of her past, and so that others may have something to read and escape reality as it is too much to bare...

Elena’s childhood was idyllic until her parents were the victims of political assassination upon a diplomatic visit to neighboring Venezuela when she was fifteen years old. It was supposed to be fine after that. The murders of her parents was supposed to be her big tragedy. She was supposed to become queen and rule her kingdom with a fair but leading hand, but that came crashing down just under two years ago. An evil sorcerer attacked Avalor and Elena fled the country with her assigned guard Lieutenant Gabriel “Gabe” Núñez, sister Isabel, and friend Mateo De Alma. She hoped that the attack on her country would be the end of their troubles - or at least signified a period of respite - but Elena couldn’t have been more wrong.
None of the countries bordering Avalor (Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia) were willing to take the royal family in as refugees, nor were the rest of the governments on the continent. Even the pro-magic Peru, although to Peru’s credit, they took in hundreds of displaced citizens of Avalor. The reason behind Elena and Isabel being unable to find asylum on their own continent, was their popularity among their own people. Avalor being a friendly but reclusive magic country scared the leaders of South America and they feared an uprising from their magick populations and being usurped by the Avalorean royals. Elena and the rest of the grand council tried and tried to reason with them, to explain that usurping anybody and taking over anywhere wasn’t at all what they had in mind, but to no avail. Elena’s possession of a magical item that the evil sorcerer was after was an additional mark against them - they feared an invasion of their own countries as well.
A princess without a country and the steward of a sought after magical item, Elena needed to find safety and find it fast. The Dominican Republic, South Korea, Serbia, Nepal, Switzerland, Germany, and Uzbekistan all granted them temporary asylum for a short period of time each, but bouncing from country to country just wasn’t cutting it. So while hiding in a small abandoned cottage by a German forest, Elena insisted Gabe go ahead and investigate Western Europe, to see if it’s really dotted with settlements as Magick safe as they heard from an old Serbian woman. “Send word and Isabel, Mateo, and I will join you when you find a place to live.” Reluctantly, Gabe went on ahead but trusted Elena’s safety to Mateo.
Gabe and Elena communicated through scattered phone calls for the following months, until on Elena’s end the correspondence suddenly stopped just under three months ago, at the end of May, without any explanation. Without any indication to Gabe that something was wrong…how was he to know?
A group of German magick-hunters nearby suspected Elena and Mateo of being hexendämonen - witch demons, their slur for magicks - and broke into the cottage while the three were sleeping to abduct them. It took them two weeks to find a chance to escape the basement of the home they were held in, and once they made a quick stop to the forest cottage to salvage any belongings and retrieve the Scepter of Light that Mateo and Elena hid inside of a wall and masked with anti-discovery magic, they fled Germany. They’ve been bouncing around Western Europe for the past month and a half.
Unbeknownst to any of the trio, the English town Mateo has inexplicably led them to has just what they’re looking for. Safety. But more importantly? Gabe. Elena’s lifelong friend and personal guard. They’ve been separated since November, and Gabe is unaware of their time in captivity..
Gabe must be worried sick - if he even cares at all. Which is a cruel thought, because Elena knows her friend worries about her, but she can’t help but to be a little bitter and angry. Why hadn’t he come to look for them, did he not think something was wrong? What could possibly have preoccupied him? Did he find somewhere to live happily and forget all about them? Did he think Elena was too much trouble so he just…ran off?
Elena doesn’t want to be angry. She knows that she really doesn’t have a right to be angry. It was HER idea he leave in the first place. And it’s not as if HE had a way to contact HER. Elena was only able to call when the she, Mateo, and Isabel had gathered enough loose change found on the streets or in a wishing fountain to use a pay phone, and after escaping Germany they never stayed in the same country with the same currency long enough for gathering to be any use. And more than anything she misses her dear friend and just wants to see him again. See him safe, and happy, and thriving. And he’s been away from her for so long… he must be enjoying the freedom.
Even if he doesn’t want to be her bodyguard anymore, which would suck because she’s never not felt safe with Gabe…but if her life has taught her anything it’s that nothing good ever lasts for her.

The Great Merlin Bake Off - Because someone said, "What if it's Merlin, but they're on Bake Off?" AKA: The GBBO AU. It was bound to happen at some point.

welcome, 2020. lunatics continue to run the asylum,
conforming to norms from subtle political correctness to policing
each other with excessive force. allowing the house of narcissistic
overlords to parasitically siphon our consciousness to weaponize
it against us as black magick utilizing it as a tool of war --
waged on your mind, body and soul -- making
you feel afraid, powerless, and lost. susceptible to the
demons of the ego, the foreign installation interfacing
with the reptilian hive-mind so you fail to see that the
world is merely your mirror when you fall.

and you don't receive a call. i want you to be happy

past glitches with my heart have taken their toll

i didn't need a divine sign to know that i love you,
i knew as soon as i looked into your eyes and you smiled
glowing bright despite the darkness that surrounds you.
it was raining meteors when i found you, you were
the angel that i could never amount to, your innocence gave
me hope about this world and i was afraid to make any foul
moves around you, just by feeling your soul i could write a
whole book about you, mend together the broken pieces of
your heart that you didn't want to show because you weren't
proud to. if only i could free you from the weight of demands
of the society that you felt bound to. i'd love nothing more than
