Do you think gold-sick Thorin would have give Bilbo the Arkenstone freely if he had it? If Bilbo gave the Arkenstone to Thorin and then asked him to take it as his 14th share, would Thorin give it?

I don't know about you, but when I hear "Gems of Pure Starlight" I don't think of glassy pure see through gems. No. I think of opals. Dunno. But also there are too many opal like gems and crystals in the works if Tolkien. Like things that when discribed I find myself thinking of an opal.
In the movies in Arkenstone is very opal-like so just from an artistic and cinematic point-of-view I would not have also made the "Gems of Pure Starlight" into opals so that there would be no confusion.
Just that name makes me think of opals is all. Thought I should share.

Durin Assassin AU
Tumblr media
Sooo... @feeweeeee I did a thing.
While I’m not the best artist, I couldn’t stop thinking about that assassin AU for the Durins and I had to get this picture down before my mind exploded. So here you are!
Be it money, drugs, booze, a territory dispute or a love affair gone wrong, in this futuristic cityscape enemies are easily made. And if you know the right crowd, their just as easily removed. Sure the gangs and mobs hold power over the city, you would be mad to cross the Men of Laketown or to wonder into the King of Dale’s streets alone at night, but there are far scarier things that go bump in the night then thieves and crooks. Especially if you have a bounty on your head.
The overall story line I’m thinking is that Gandalf, a high-ranking casino owner contacts the Durins to take out a man called Smaug, a business partner that turned on him, stole millions and took off. Gandalf wants him dead and for the Durins to retrieve a trinket called the Arkenstone to confirm his death. They agree on terms and the Durins take to the streets to hunt him down, only, he’s better at getting away then they thought. There are few close calls until they finally corner Smaug. In panic he takes a hostage, a civilian named Bilbo and knowing that hostages leave loose ends when killed, Thorin chooses to save Bilbo and Smaug gets away. The rest of the story is a mush of Thorin figuring out his feeling for Bilbo who they had to take in for his own safety (something the shorter man is not happy about), Kili struggling with his attraction to Tauriel (his enemy and rival from the elven gang) and Fili’s insecurities about taking over the family business as Thorin needs to retire, all while trying to take out Smaug. Along the way you meet Dis (the brains of the operation), Nori (working undercover at a club run by Bard), Dwalin and Balin (retired hunters that Thorin calls back onto the field for help), Glion and Gimli (crooked pawn shop owners that help out the family) and the rest of the company.

ok the gradual descent into goldsickness is so sad, but so interesting to analyze.
The first glimpse of it in the films is after they’ve sent Bilbo in to get the Arkenstone. The dragon wakes up, the Company outside hear all the rumbling and stuff. Balin implores Thorin to let them go in to help Bilbo but Thorin’s like NO.
That’s when Balin points out that Thorin normally would go straight in to save Bilbo (we can back that up with a few scenes from previous parts of the story; Charging in to save Bilbo from the trolls, Thorin reaching down on the cliffs to grab Bilbo, etc.). And he directly says that it’s because of the treasure hoard. After that, Thorin goes in and finds Bilbo, but his actions are very wary and cold. He is under the influence of the gold.
But when all the Company join together to face the dragon, Thorin seems to snap back to his usual self. He’s in charge but not in a desperate way. He calls each member by name and gives them a task that he knows they can do. That’s when we can point to the screen and say “there! he’s back!” He shows his kingly leadership and understanding. They all pull together to do something well-coordinated and impressive.
The part of this that breaks me is that we are teetering on the edge. The story gives us a whiff of the goldsickness, but pulls us back in for one more clear display of Thorin as he wants to be. As the kind of king he wants to be, not like his grandfather.
And you want to believe so badly that he can pull through.

I heard that in the filming of the Hobbit, they used an Ethiopian Opal gem to represent the Arkenstone.
In the film it was introduced as a "bad" stone, but in reality the magical and spiritual properties of the Ethiopian Opal (Arkenstone) seem to be positive, though it would be interesting to mention that in some folklore it is known as the "Unlucky stone".
However it carries vibes of inspiration, self-confidence, optimism, playfulness and desire.
It's believed to increase youthfulness, helps to deal with negative feelings and sad mood. Balances the mind, body and spirit, providing connection and harmony. It is also the stone of love, intensifies emotions and reflects the mood of its wearer. Encourages freedom, independence, and unlocks creativity.
Helps to release anger and claim self-worth, aiding in expressing one's true self.
It's the stone of loyalty, faithfulness and spontaneity. Strengthens the will to live.
The word itself "Opal" seems to have more than one roots, from the Sanskrit word "Upala" meaning "Precious stone" and the Greek derivative "Oppalios" meaning "To see change is color".
And strangely or not it seems to reflect perfect the mental and physical and spiritual state of our dear king Thorin...it did it's work (if speaking of its usefulness in the fantasy world of Tolkien) though not in its best way towards Thorin.
The producers of the trilogy did a great job of choosing this specific stone for the "role" of Arkenstone, smart even, definitely for a reason.
