Erwin Schrödinger is one of the "fathers of quantum mechanics". He also sexually abused children. Trinity College Dublin recently denamed a lecture theatre that had been named after him - but his name is still on an equation that won the Nobel Prize for physics. And a cat.Writer and historian Subhadra Das recounts how and why you rename a university building, and retired physicist Martin Austwick considers that renaming an eponymous equation or theory might be more difficult than unscrewing a sign from a wall.

The concept for aural emojis was just brought up on a NON-FICTION podcast, I am LIVING 😂😂😂 that's one of my favorite Arden products 🤣
It's episode 105 of The Allusionist, I would explain the context if I wasn't so exhausted but the episode itself is about brand names of food that spell things differently (like Wyngz, cheez, e'ggs, chick'n etc) whether to convey that it's an imitation or some other reason, and it comes up around minute 7.

This was a brilliant discussion of the history of the term 'queerbaiting', including some 1950s history about literal queerbaiting by cops that I'm ashamed I didn't know about, then on into fandom history where the term only shows up again in the early 2000s, and exploration of how the meaning shifts from there. The Allusionist does some great deep dives into language in its cultural context - this month they're exploring queer-related terms - they looked at 'rainbow washing' a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know what to do with the existence of Titivillus the Typo Demon, but this 20-minute podcast about him was fantastic.
(I'm not going to tag this with #good omens fanfiction because it isn't Good Omens fanfiction, but it also isn't not potentially related to Good Omens fanfiction...)

For NaClYoHo you recommend putting on a 20 to 40 minute podcast episodes to clean to. Can you make any recommendations? The majority of mine run well over an hour for each episode.
I feel like podcasts have kind of gotten longer in general, is that just me? Maybe it's the pandemic, or maybe just my tastes shifting. In any case, a lot of mine run long now too, but looking at my playlist here are some shorter podcasts I recommend:
PEMcast -- put on by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, they cover a wide variety of artistic and local cultural topics (their latest is about the bats the museum is hosting!)
99% Invisible -- about "invisible" designs that shape our world. "Used To Be A Pizza Hut" is a great episode, and their partnership with Articles Of Interest about Hawaiian shirts was brilliant.
Criminal -- True crime reported on by an extremely smart woman with a beautiful voice. It's not the typical true crime podcast in that she approaches it more like longform journalism, and sometimes the crimes themselves are very whimsical. She also does "Phoebe Reads A Mystery" where she reads one chapter of a public domain mystery novel each day; I recommend Dracula and The Portrait Of Dorian Gray, although there's a variety of lengths on those.
Bridgewater -- A fiction podcast featuring Misha Collins as a skeptical specialist in mythology who delves into the mystery of his father's death many years before. I stopped listening after season one, a bit disappointed in the denoument, but most of season one is great and I am actually going to try to listen to S2 as part of NaNo.
"City Cast" Your Local City -- not every city has them, but City Cast is a locally hosted show in most major cities about what's happening. City Cast Chicago is EXCELLENT.
Mailin' It -- the official podcast of the USPS, which sure is....something. It's fascinating to listen to in an anthropological sense, but also the subject matter is occasionally quite compelling. I especially like episode 7, "Stamps, An American Obsession".
The Allusionist -- all about how words shape our lives. I got into it with 145, "Parents", about gender identity and pregnancy/birth, which informed both Infinite Jes and Royals/Ramblers.
Levar Burton Reads -- Levar Burton reads SFF short stories charmingly. (This is on the longer side but most are still under an hour.)
Cautionary Tales -- Tim Hartford looks to history and what it can teach us; I run hot and cold but I stick with it because of gems like "The Art Forger, The Nazi, and the Pope", "Wrong Tools Cost Lives" and most recently "Photographing Fairies" (about the Cottingley Fairies and how Elsie Wright was, actually, the photoshop genius of her day.)
Mob Queens -- I will forever recommend Mob Queens, a single-run series about Anna Genovese, who dunned in her mobster husband, took over some of his business, and lived a queer and fabulous life with her butch partner as a gay nightclub doyenne in midcentury America.
Also most don't include lengths but the Participation Form Results Sheet has a spot for "what media are you going to use" and people have been putting suggestions. Readers, feel free to add your own suggestions in comments or reblogs. (Remember, I don't repost asks sent in response to other asks!)
Happy listening everyone!

favourite podcasts? (If u don’t mind sharing)
yeah totally! here are some—
a recent favorite is you must remember this, the film history podcast by karina longworth. the show explores everything hollywood's first century can tell us about the surrounding cultural ideals, shifts, etc. and it's so impressively researched by someone who knows a ton about movies. i started with the most recent season called “erotic 80s” and now i'm in the middle of “make me over” which is about hollywood and the beauty industry. cannot wait for the next season "erotic 90s" but thankfully there's also a huge back catalog.
aack cast, jamie loftus' podcast miniseries about the cathy comics. you don't actually have to know much about cathy to enjoy this lol, the comic is sort of a gateway to investigate the lives of boomer women when it comes to feminism, consumerism, work, etc. it's a mix of interviews, jamie's writing, and even some narrating of the comic strips. i really like all of jamie's shows, she has a really natural style that is funny and curious and heartfelt. her lolita podcast is another favorite that is stylistically similar but obviously heavier territory.
between the covers with david naimon is a longform author interview podcast, i love it because david is best interviewer i have ever heard in any context. he really close-reads his guest's books and comes up with these very thoughtful thematic questions that draw out conversations about craft, social justice, society and culture, feelings, and a million other tangential things. i would recommend starting with an episode about a book you've read before, but now i use it for recommendations or just to listen to interesting people talk even if i don't know their work previously. i also really like commonplace with rachel zucker which is similarly in-depth, it has a different but also wonderful interview mood.
some other shows i like: the allusionist, everything that branched off you’re wrong about (YWA, you are good, maintenance phase, if books could kill), twenty thousand hertz, decoder ring, literary friction, poetry off the shelf, vs., thresholds with jordan kisner, articles of interest, american hysteria. when i just want to listen to friends talking i like poog with kate berlant and jacqueline novak. and the podcast form of democracy now for news. always looking for new stuff if anyone has suggestions! ❤️

top 3 moments of today, august 26th, 2023
i made an ugly but still tasty french omelette for breakfast. i've been trying to get better at it since i saw someone make it on a show. i'm still very bad at it
i have a cat friend in the neighborhood that i always meet in the same spot on my daily walks around 7p, just before sunset. it runs to me when i call and will demand i pet it aka bumping its head into my hand before it gets its fill and continues about its day. today, it joined me for a bit of my walk and i watched it catch a grasshopper
Tumblr media
i listened to the podcast the allusionist, hosted by linguist helen zaltzman, and learned about william sharpe/fiona mccleod and their very supportive ally and wife elizabeth

This was recently explicitly said on a podcast i was listening to and I was thrilled to finally have a clear answer about it then, and then extra thrilled to get this question on this "commonly confused words" quiz that caught my eye when i was looking up "procatalepsis"
Also my first thought with the explanation at the bottom was, "I'm bisexual, which means I'm attracted to every two people I see." lolol
