Cyberpunk 2079: Chorus

Project Erinyes

Militech Offensive Cyberwarfare Program (2040-2049) Current Status: TERMINATED

A mockup I made for the symbol for Project Erinyes, a shady Militech project that makes appearances in both my Cyberpunk RED campaign How to Save a Life and in my post-2077 fic Chorus.

Project Erinyes predates the release of Phantom Liberty, but thanks to the revelation of Project Cynosure in Phantom Liberty, it just works into the idea that Militech has been spending years countering Arasaka's Soulkiller with increasingly horrific experiments.

Some of the details below the cut may be triggering to viewers who are sensitive to: medical experimentation, torture, psychological manipulation.

Project Erinyes was a program to create an offensive Artificial General Intelligence to close the gap between Arasaka and Militech netrunning capabilities. Erinyes was the equivalent of covertly planting charges around the enemy and then detonating them by remote control. After being fed data, the AGI, codenamed TISIPHONE, would calculate and prepare the delivery of highly precise and coordinated net strikes on the target to cripple their ability to fight in meatspace, and permanently compromise their net security.

For example, if TISIPHONE was tasked with burning an entire FIA spy network in Night City, it would probe the net, tapping holo comms, radio channels, net activity, security cams and other sources of SIGINT until it had built a map of literally every aspect of the operation. TISIPHONE could then use its sapient decision-making matrix to take one of the following actions, or a combination of the below:

Use psychological warfare techniques to compromise the target agents, e.g. sending them vague messages that their identity was compromised, or falsifying information that a partner was cheating by sending false messages, or signing up a partner to a dating app, or in one case, generate a fake braindance for the agent to find.

Release their identities on the NET, particularly ensuring that opponents of NUS activity in NC were informed. For example, releasing the identities of the agents to Arasaka Counter-Intel or on the Dark NET for purchase.

Indirectly incapacitate the agent by attacking their support networks (e.g. friends, family, other loved ones). For example, the AI could seize control of an FIA agent's girlfriend's car and drive it off a bridge and into Morro Bay.

If TISIPHONE has access to the second component of Erinyes, ALECTO, then TISIPHONE could launch a Fury Strike, which is the NET equivalent of a cruise missile strike. A Fury Strike functions almost identically to a Blackwall Breach (and that's with good reason).

The NET weapon known as ALECTO is an AI core consisting of several neural matricies, each containing Militech's own homegrown equivalent of a Blackwall AI. If NetWatch ever found out that Militech has this, it would be enough to ruin Militech. They are connected to a powerful computer assembly that links into the NET. In order to launch such devastating and simultaneous Fury Strikes, ALECTO has fifteen simultaneously operating processors, each with huge amounts of RAM to queue up and execute actions. The heat generated by the ALECTO core is so great that it requires active cryogenic cooling to operate safely.

The final element of Project Erinyes is known as MEGAERA, or, grimly, the 'human element.' Operating without a human factor in the decision-making process, TISIPHONE has proven to demonstrate an almost psychopathic degree of glee in deploying the most harmful options. In order to moderate TISIPHONE's lust for violence, a human element was introduced. At the height of the program, up to 20 netrunners, known as the Choir, would interface directly with TISIPHONE's core.

There was one slight problem: as time went on, the netrunners became unable to disconnect from the core, and eventually they would become consumed by the core, killing them. It was revealed that the process of interfacing was too taxing on the human body, unaugmented, so the netrunners were subjected to experimental procedures to enhance their survivabiliity.

Project MEGAERA was a partial body conversion to enable netrunners to interface with the core without losing their mind. The problem was seemingly solved, but it also meant cutting out part of the netrunner's back, scooping out a bunch of their insides, and potentially driving them to cyberpsychosis. MEGAERA looks like a more primitive, Red Decades-era version of Songbird's cyberware.

MEGAERA uses nanotech to bridge the connections between cyberware and the human mind.

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 9 - Wrong Perceptions

I feel like Usagi gets misrepresented in a subset of fics where she is made to look both less smart, less caring, and less on top of things than I feel she should be (regardless of whether you use manga or original anime as your baseline). So it was refreshing to find the below stories where that gets turned on its head a bit. This post has moved around in the queue but I finally get to share some of my favourites.

Hero Wanted - Meg-Of-The-Moon

Usagi gets hurt saving a little girl, but the perceptions of her by the people in her neighbourhood are next to impossible to change. As she listens to their speculations about her less-than-positive reasoning for choosing to help, someone else comes to her own rescue.

Shades of Grey - 44musicfreak44

I found this story an interesting study in how an individual could actually feel vs their self imposed demeanour to the outside world. This one-shot is slotted right before the big battle in the Dark Kingdom arc with the weight of everything slowly wearing down on Usagi until all she feels is hopelessness and exhaustion from battles, training and pressure on her to save everyone. Can a conversation with someone help her see things slightly differently?

A Stitch In Time - Princess Ophelia

This is probably my favourite Time-Travel trope story at this time. Princess Serenity defies her mother and tries to go see Prince Endymion despite the unrest on Earth. Except she instead swaps places with Usagi in the future for a bit, unintentionally giving things away about her future-self that were purposefully hidden from EVERYONE, including Pluto. While Usagi gets to live through the day that features prominently in the nightmares of her past life.

You're Real, Aren't You? - @master-ray5

Mamoru cannot fathom that Usagi could be as nice of a person as everyone, including his best friend, suggests. So for years he does his best to try and prove them wrong. But is he actually right? Or did his past colour his perception?

I Was A Princess - @angelmoongirl

Little Usagi tells her mother increasingly detailed tales of her being a princess. But why would Ikuko believe that the stories are anything more than the vivid imagination of a toddler, no matter how intense they might be becoming?

She's Smarter Than You Think, Rei - bashfulglowfly

Once and for all, Ami (having gotten absolutely fed up with Rei's treatment of their princess) explains why Usagi's grades may not be what they appear at first glance.

So it's an evil pool. Looks like an able execution of the idea of an evil pool. It even makes the dad go crazy. It's something I've seen a million times before, but perhaps I take for granted that there's someone out there who sees the novel idea at the core of it and has only seen the shambling, recycled skeleton 500,000 times.

Retired badass played by aging actor.

Innocent friend hurt my cartoon monster-people.

World-spanning conspiracy.

One-against-one-hundred odds, both individually and as the man takes on the system that can be killed by murdering one guy and destroying a single computer.

Hero is part of a secret society bad guys are afraid of, even though it lacks the institutional power to do the thing he's doing. It's basically just a discount gun store with a visually impressive lock for divorced losers to kill comically evil people (played by even more-aging actors) who represent ideas too vast to be killed with bullets.

"It has everything," get said about a lot of movies. It always meant what I've seen termed as 'all of the good stuff, none of the bad stuff.' Kind of a blanket, "This movie loves you."

But The Book of Clarence looks like a movie that has everything. A clever idea. A complex main character. Biblical elements. Fistfights. It's got a lot of pistons firing and really, it could only disappoint me from here.

Origin is intriguing. It's got one of those classic trailers that doesn't seem to tell you everything about the movie. I can put a lot together in that it's one woman's search for the origins of racism and her determination to answer that question through experience.

I.S.S. - 19JAN24

On the other hand, I.S.S. gives you the premise--US and Russian astronauts are on the International Space Station when World War 3 breaks out. The US team is told to take the ISS and presumes the Russians are told the same thing.

Queue intrigue and death on the most dangerous building ever created by man when the obvious, overhanging solution is to work together to delay the ticking clock of the ISS as a habitable building before descending to the wasteland below.

The Concierge - 19JAN24

I've also seen this titled The Concierge at Arctic Department Store, which is about a woman who wants to excel at her job, but the problem is talking animal customers. It's anime. What do you want? I'm not the demographic for this movie. I wish I could see US movies the way I see anime films; just the matrix code of a desire to excel, some random job, and a few relatable obstacles before the inevitable catharsis and peace and love on planet Earth ending.

Founder's Day - 19JAN24

Two horror movies in January. Is that normal? Doesn't feel normal. It's honestly more threadbare than Night Swim. Night Swim has a monster and a supernatural force trying to 'get' the family in novel ways. Founder's Day is a unique mask plus a unique murder weapon. Your Jason Vorhees, your guy from Scream, your The Strangers, your Leatherface, and to a lesser extent, your Black Phone guy, your Saw guy, and your The Purge folks.

But now it's a powdered wig and a gavel. Sure. Who gives a fuck?

Mean Girls (2024) - 12JAN24

Wait, I don't think I can bottom out on fucks before I get to the remake of a comedy that I never saw, but which is part of the Trio of Well-Regarded Lady Films I haven't seen (Clueless, Legally Blonde, and Mean Girls).

But prima facie, it looks stupid and it gets my 0 Fucks Award for January 2024. Look, horror guys are gonna eat Founder's Day up unlessit's surprisingly good by being original. I couldn't imagine who Mean Girls (2024) is for.

Miller's Girl - 26JAN24

I'm not a fan of Martin Freeman. I mildly dislike him and his characters. They always come across like pricks. I don't like all of John Krasinski's career choices, but his version of Jim in The Office worked because he had charisma. Freeman has prick energy, which played better for his version, but I can't stand the guy. He was perfectly cast as the one white guy in Black Panther.

Oh right, I was disappointed that this movie wasn't a horror movie. It's just a story about how a teacher and student have chemistry and she can ruin his life with false accusations if he doesn't say 'yes.' Yeah, that can happen, but that seems like a smaller social issue than men with power using that to get with girls/young women girls.

Or the media they look at to validate their actions and play the victim when they get found out. I'm not saying Miller's Girl will be a bad film, it's just a film that shouldn't.

Self Reliance - 03JAN24 (Hulu)

It's interesting and charming and only gives us the first act or two of the idea. The idea of the secret game where humans are hunted for sport always has, like, a thousand holes in it when the movie is about hunting a middle-class Westerner in the middle-class West, so they might as well make it a comedy.

9 - joy from despair?

Today

The stream for today was actually quite short compared to what I was thinking would happen. The game for the movie Shrek the Third is a lot shorter than I expected, especially since I not only skipped every cutscene to dodge any possibility of copyright claims but also spammed the triangle button on every dialogue skipping those entirely whenever possible. Even then, I felt as though there were fewer levels than I remember, though, as a kid, I probably never finished this game. However, one thing I must say is that the game has good mechanics within it that many games do not have like friendly-fire enemies and free, easy movement. Of course, it was not incredibly difficult or amazing in any regard, but I was pleasantly surprised by such mechanics. I even slightly enjoyed that the characters did feel different from each other; Fiona was straight up a character from the Matrix game on the PS2.

Hair

I wanted to get a haircut today, but even by the time of 11 am where I live, the queue for the local barber was waitlisted for 111 minutes. I hope to get one tomorrow since my hair is so long that it gets in my eyes and makes the back of my head hot. As I stated in previous posts, the temperatures where I live are above 100 Degrees Fahrenheit, so getting a haircut would help.

Pumpkins

I have a picture of the pumpkins that I planted for once to post here. It would seem that bugs have become more of a problem, which I fear will prevent them from bearing fruit. Nothing I can do about it though.

Overwatch 2's developers have been gradually revealing some of the adjustments coming in season three, which starts on February 7. Ramattra experts may need to make plans around a recently nerfed ultimate, but competitive mode enthusiasts have already received good news in the form of matching adjustments and simpler rank-ups. While game changes are important, the atmosphere around matches themselves is a critical part of keeping Overwatch 2 enjoyable. In today’s Defense Matrix update, the developers talked about some of the ways they’re working to keep games safe, fair, and free of harassment or toxicity. Streamers and content creators are the lifeblood of the Overwatch 2 community, keeping the excitement going and facilitating cosmetic drops and viewership incentives. For Overwatch’s entire lifespan, popular streamers have had to deal with a phenomenon called “stream sniping,” where viewers intentionally queue into a game at the same time as the streamer.
