concepting around aura (and related) techniques below the cut. sorta mix of headcanons and stuff for an au.
okay. so: aura techniques can be put into four main categories: defensive, offensive, tactical (name pending), and healing.
// defensive: an aura shield that covers person's body as well as any additional things, like weapons, that they choose to extend their aura to cover. it only protects from outward threats—being most durable against blunt attacks, then slashing, and finally, piercing attacks—, not from illness or, say, twisting your ankle, though in latter's case it can somewhat ease the pain.
while an aura shield covers the entire body by default once aura is unlocked and no longer dormant, with enough training the shield can be focused to specific areas, creating a more durable shield that can repel stronger attacks. this tactic, however, is incredibly risky, with just one miscalculation being enough for severe consequences; henceforth most aura users focus on full-body shielding and strengthening their aura in other ways—mainly by training their focus to keep their aura shield up, and to avoid any lapses in that.
extending one's aura away from their body to act as a separate shield is the most common goal for those who wish to train their defensive techniques further; mainly due to the simple fact that with the aura shield further away from your body, you don't have to feel the dull (or not so dull) ache from the hit.
// offensive: offensive aura techniques are, frankly, a taboo. while anyone with an unlocked aura can certainly try, there's a great risk of injuring yourself trying to use your aura offensively; losing a part of your own aura is to be considered lucky, and there's potential for much, much worse.
but the main reason is a fairly simple one: it has no effect on grimm, who simply absorb any aura send their way. offensive aura is only effective against other people, and thus should not serve any purpose for those who hunt grimm. to even say it's 'effective' against people feels like an understatement: an offensive technique like an aura slash cuts through an aura shield like a hot knife through butter.
for all these reasons, offensive aura techniques are banned from any official tournaments to discourage people from learning them. and to their credit, this effort has been fairly successful: finding any information about offensive techniques has become more and more difficult over the years... though they still live on in criminal underworlds.
// tactical: this is were the greatest variety is, many believing that all sorts of 'tactical' aura techniques have not even been discovered yet.
the most popular, however, is a 'sonar'; the ability to sense other beings with aura—unlocked or dormant—no matter the situation you find yourself in. it cannot go through walls or solid objects to spot anyone (or anything), but it does show grimm as these 'voids', which makes it a great technique for those who are hunting grimm in thick forests or other such environment where visibility is low.
protection from temperature is another technique that falls into this category.
// healing: pretty straightforward: it's simply healing. by default, with an unlocked anyone can heal small injuries like scrapes and small cuts with relative ease; anything else requires more and more extensive training depending on the nature of the injury.
for aura healing techniques, healing another person using one's own aura is at the top. only few people manage to reach this level, hence why such aura healers are in great demand, being able to use their aura to heal even those whose aura is still dormant.
aura is part of a person's soul, which is why it has a chance of "expressing" itself in different ways, depending on the person; this can also be hereditary (think ruby's and summer's rose petals outside of semblance use).
for those who never quite got a hang of controlling their aura in ways they wanted, or whose aura have stayed dormant despite their best efforts, exists an aura blocking techniques; either temporarily, where person's aura eventually comes back on its own, or a bit more "permanent", where the person needs to work on unlocking their aura again, potentially even resetting their progress, depending on the effectiveness of the block.
there are rumors of aura blocking going to the extent of taking away aura permanently, but there has never been a recorded proof of this happening, hence why these rumors are often considered cautionary fairy tales at best.

Prompt:
It’s not that Jason forgot, per se.
But between smuggling a toddler out of the League of Assassins, trekking halfway across the world, and finding a suitable hiding place that’s also child friendly… well, it kind of slipped his mind that he’s supposed to be… dead.
Something that comes back to bite him in the ass when he takes Dami out for some ice cream and just so happens to run into non other than Brucie-fucking-Wayne
#look I’ve found a new fave trope and it’s Brucie Wayne having to keep up his act while internally LOSING HIS SHIT#Jason isn’t very into the whole revenge thing here#his mind is 85 parts ‘keep Dami safe’ 5 parts ‘kill joker asap’ and 10 parts ‘avoid bats at any cost’#Jason doesn’t know who Damian’s father is#dealer’s choice if Jason establishes himself as Dami’s dad or older brother#his build certainly makes him look old enough#if you don’t look at his baby face lol#Jason runs into Brucie and goes straight into survival mode#Damian who is very observant for a toddler immediately clocks Brucie as THREAT based on Jason’s reaction#Brucie blue screens and desperately tries not to lose Jason in the crowd#jason is absolutely trying to lose Brucie in the crowd#while clutching Damian like his life depends on it#for all he knows it does#the visceral terror that your pseudo dad will take away your little brother/baby#Bruce who just wants to know if he’s hallucinating again: W A I T#jason who is terrified of being put in Arkham for killing people: no FUCKING WAY#hm maybe Jason plays the ‘I’m not Jason’ game again#it’s not gonna hold for long#but Bruce absolutely thinks that Damian is Jason’s bio child for a while and he’s on the WARPATH#Jason was sixteen when he died and never showed any interest in dating so literally every red flag is waving in brucie’s mind simultaneousl#or maybe Jason manages to get away and all Brucie is left with is the memory of his supposedly dead son#running away from him#and clutching a tiny kid#prompts#jason todd#batfamily#Damian wayne#batdad#brucie wayne

This whole scene is So good it kills me...
Just like in their first fight, Ras descends from the skies to get something he needs, and knocks the shit out of Riyu, and knocks Arin around, but this time instead of delivering his monlogue to Riyu, it's to Arin, and it isn't menacing as much as an "I know your potential," type of thing...
He doesn't see anymore potential in Riyu, but Arin, he sees Arin, he knows Arin, because at one point, he WAS Arin, a weak, pathetic, puny child... Arin's Spinjitsu is still just as shit as when he first faced Ras, and he's still just as weak, which Ras tells him. He tells Arin as much, how he's still as weak as their first encounter, and how once, he was weak like Arin, that the ninja are squandering his potential and holding him back, and Ras tells him how he found his master, who taught him the most essential power, strength.
And then there's that moment at the end where he gives Arin this look of just "I know you, I've been you, maybe one day you can find someone to teach you as I was taught..." and then the end where he hallucinates his parents running towards him...
This scene, along with the finale and Lloyd's episode 1 vision, really feel like they're setting up a darker path for Arin and I'm So excited for that possibility...

Sometimes the way people talk about missing social cues is so over the top 😭 people will really say stuff like "how can someone live such a soulless joyless existence that they don't understand my joke" and "if you don't laugh at this are you even human" and "I can't imagine being such a miserable asshole that you think this is serious" and "how stupid do you have to be to fall for this 💀" and on and on like. I promise autism isn't a moral failing

having the hc that minato is ace is incredibly funny sometimes when you think about how ryoji is oh so very bi because it's like. "ah. death stole my ability to be attracted to people," in the same way that ryoji stole minato's eye color and energy level. like wow, thanks ryoji, you just keep finding things to steal from minato!
#persona 3 spoilers#minato arisato#hc and au nonsense#lizzy speaks#happy international asexuality day to my fellow aces out there i hope you know that you are loved!!! 🎊🎉🥳#i like viewing minato with the lens of him being gay / ace. esp bc it stems from my own experiences so it's fun to look at-#him from that perspective even if that's not what was intended by atlus y'know?#and im sure others have other hcs from me that are informed by their own life experiences and i think that's great ^_^#something that i found interesting while playing FES was how. stilted? minato's animations felt when hugging the girls#you could definitely go with the perspective that it's a graphical limitation or they didn't have time to polish the animations#and that's def true!! but sometimes i see the hug @ yakushima beach + the other hugs and then i compare it to the sou/yo hug in p4#and there's like... a noticeable difference to me with how intimate and close together the hugs are...#that said i do know that the animations for reload are updated and the hugs are much more natural (good on them tbh!)#the other thing is (pensive sigh). the way you couldn't reject any of the girls when doing their social links in FES#objectively speaking i'm glad that they did away with that and i like how the rejections were handled in reload. it feels naturally written#but also a part of me enjoyed looking at the “hey atlus what the FUCK” moment and thought of how to interpret it differently#specifically with the idea of minato having like.. little to no autonomy and kind of going along with the relationship#it kind of reminded me of myself tbh with like going along with the rship without considering what you want bc#it's what others want or expect out of you... LOL. i dont think atlus intended for someone to interpret it this way but#eh i think that's the fun part of hcs and looking at characters with certain lenses!#regardless of how you perceive minato i do think there's something to be said about him being the kind of guy who molds himself-#into someone that is needed. not wanted. but needed. important distinction here.#the one caveat my brain runs into when im like “minato is ace!” is when i remember thanatos exists and i go#“you know what these ideas can exist simultaneously” GKLHFHDFHD when in doubt schrodinger's headcanons#anyway that's all i've had this thought in my brain in awhile and haven't sat down to share it properly until now 👍#have an excellent weekend everyone !!! lizzy loves you all lets all nurture our inner yippee!!! 🥺💙

Not to be an insufferable Shakespeare girl on main but, a lot of Slow Horses reminds me of him, the way it utilizes how tragic yet utterly stupid and comedic violence can be. (BTW, This is very much inspired by @saulbetter 's very cool observation of how the show uses Webb as a living example of escalated violence, the crash test dummy that suffers increasingly real consequences, lol)
One of my favorite plays is Titus Andronicus, especially because of an interpretation by Peter Sacks called “non-mourning”. I’m really condensing it here, but in essence it’s about how Titus is a story so filled with blood, revenge, tragedy, and (at times ridiculous) violence that it makes the characters completely breathless. There is no time to mourn, only to react. The mourning itself is expressed by increasingly horrific murders etc.
Season 3 of Slow Horses is not only the most violent, but also the most fast paced so far. It all takes place over the course of, like, one day. That is crazy. The deaths we see on screen are also very blunt. They are quick, brutal, final, and both avoidable yet inevitable. That makes the conversation River and Louisa are afforded for ca. five minutes before disaster stand out so much. And after everything in the end, Louisa is just like “Okay, bye”, which is the opposite of a healthy reaction. While River goes to see the person he is already mourning (not lost, losing) who goes on to give him a genuine reason to mourn– not because grandpa is slowly drifting away, but because he is also destroying the image River has of him and MI5 in the process. This is like when everyone mourns Lavinia, even though she is still alive, only that she happens to be a living reminder of loss (!).
Finally, as an aside, I also have to think of how Donovan and Webb are positioned in this story arc. Slow Horses and Titus Andronicus both have a sort of cyclical (or perhaps pyramidical?) nature of violence going. However, back to the beginning of the post now, Webb as a character seems to inspire violence, though never directly carrying out any. The tragic comic aspect is that it circles back around to him no matter what he does or doesn’t do. On the other hand, Donovan wants revenge/retaliation for what happened. His journey starts with violence carried out against his lover, he continues to carry it out as a reaction, then it circles back to him, eventually destroying him (and others), too. Hauntingly, the last part of the chain is presented by the sister who is no longer a sister when Lamb leaves her at that hospital, is she?

My last post made me want to spin the ballet au to suit the general cast, keeping Es as the protagonist 🩰
I don't have art for this one but I still got a bit carried away with the details LOL This definitely leans more into a sweet fix-it :3
The story would open with Es waking up in the medical room of Milgram Dance Academy, a very small and isolated school. Es is told they suffered a bad head injury during a performance, resulting in amnesia. Their instructor (Jackalope. Make this work however you wish.) tells them not to worry about it, and to focus on their dancing for now. Es feels a pressing responsibility to stay and rehearse, so they agree.
Jackalope tells them they must understudy several roles while recovering, not ready to jump into things right away. They're grateful, since they're struggling with their identity and expression without their memories.
The first student they are directed to is a shy and lanky dancer by the name of Haruka. They study under him as the role of a graceful, melancholic swan. They watch the choreography in general, and it looks nice enough. Es proceeds to spend several rehearsals with him, talking and bonding and learning he has a bit more going on than meets the eye. They try to offer help as he admits to familial issues, self esteem questions, and comments about sibling jealousy. In turn, he teaches Es to mimic some of his powerful emotions. At the end of their time together, they both perform for their class in full costume and staging. Now, Es understands each move with a deeper understanding than their initial look at the steps.
Next, they’re sent to meet the bubbly girl playing Juliet and begin the process anew. This continues to make a total of ten roles. Some of the dancers take the sessions kindly, while others are brash, secretive, or just confusing.
After rehearsing with Kotoko and learning to understand her determination and confidence, Es is sent back to Haruka, who has moved onto a new show and new role. They’re shocked to discover that their words to each dancer – always well-intentioned – had caused some issues backstage. Now, there are rivalries and changes in stage presence. While experiencing stress (that Es has inadvertently caused,) some were distracted in rehearsal and got injured. Es must take on the interpersonal issues as well as the choreography challenges.
I don’t have all the roles down and was trying to stick to well-known shows anyway, but I think I’d want Muu to be the Sugar Plum Fairy, Kazui to be Albrecht from Giselle, and Amane to be Clara. I wanted to keep them traditionally gendered to prove there are plenty of roles for men, but I can’t help but have Odette/Odile thoughts for T1 Mikoto ;-;
Like the other post, I'm equally tempted to have the dancers performing ballet adaptations of the mvs 👀 I want to see. Bee tutu. Doctor coat costume. Marching band tutu. AKAA mismatched look. The backgrounds. The music. The choreo. So many cool possibilities...
As a sweet au, it all ends with everyone better for having met one another. Es is cast in a solo performance, combining everything they've learned both emotionally and technically from the others. They feel satisfied with their sense of identity, and shine onstage ✨️✨️✨️
