- Azula has no marks. she’s terrified of them because her father has told her that only weak people have marks, and she doesn’t want to be weak, does she? everytime she thinks she’s getting close to having a mark - because she can’t even say it, love, it’s a mark, a mark - she shuts down and breeds hate within herself. she can’t be weak, and she can’t disappoint her father.

- Mai’s marks are small and well-hidden. so well hidden she can barely find them. they’re at the centre of her back, so indistinct that she cranes her neck painfully to even catch a glimpse. she doesn’t want to admit they exist, but they do, and sometimes they are her only source of hope. her parents marks begin the chain from the top- both greyed out. she considered their apathy betrayal the minute she was old enough to understand. azula and ty lee’s marks are under theirs. azula’s mark goes grey after she imprisons mai.

- zuko’s mark is nestled under ty lee’s. she knows her symbol: a blade is imprinted under zuko’s left shoulder blade. they never talk about it.

- ty lee has many marks, the only one of them to have any in plain sight. azula’s blue fire is on her ankle, and mai’s blade on her wrist. her circus friends and sisters’ marks are scattered on her shins and forearms, the parts of her body she uses to balance in her acts.

- after the war is over, and she joins the kyoshi warriors, their marks start forming too. suki’s fan matches the position of mai’s blade on ty lee’s other wrist. suki smiles at ty lee’s soft blue chi root appears on her left arm, along with katara, and toph’s mark: finally evening out the number of marks on her right and left arms.
