thank you!!! at the start of this blog i spent a long time talking about this kind of thing and the fandom was remarkably more hostile towards characters (and fans) of color, to a point where the only people really having these discussions in any complexity were me and a few friends, and it made me miserable :)! i don’t even know if anyone has been around long enough to remember my period of inactivity that followed that but of course the reason behind it is that it just wasn’t fun anymore, which is also why i don’t talk about it as often or in length anymore. but seeing how easily any criticism has been swept under the rug, seeing how the things many of us have said years ago were immediately buried under louder voices promoting no-nuance takes on the series, it just felt very terrible. there’s not really any point to this, and i by no means plan to be the hub for these discussions when i’ve done my time already, but it’s still worth talking about. the aftg fandom really will never let you forget its majority is white americans :=)

Okay so Kahilda calling Adler in 3x04 and then Tally trying to call her the same way now that she’s a steward in 3x09 like?!?! Can someone scream with me or some write how Alder wanted to answer or something. Still upset how her grief persists until Adler is actually there seems atypical. Idk if any of this makes sense but just trying to share my tadler feels/pain lol

omg wait i hadn't even made that connection but you're so right!! she was absolutely trying to call Alder back and rewatching that scene you can literally see the grief on her face when she turns to Adil, but then she was just totally fine seeing Alder at the wedding?!? and like, even shipping aside, Tally literally thought she had just watched Alder die for the second time and then she just...casually hears about her presence at the wedding and just decides to catch her on her way out?? and not address any of it??? it's absolutely just down to bad writing at this point and prioritizing the plot (or what the writers wanted their final season's plot to be before knowing s3 was it, but that's a whole other essay 🙄) over actual meaningful character beats. it makes no sense and i feel your pain!!!

also holy shit the thought of Alder in the cave already thinking this is really it and then hearing Tally's song and not being able to even respond? Tally literally gave up her power for the song, and now with Alder trapped after breaking her promise to save herself, it might as well have been for nothing. now Tally's always going to be carrying a reminder of yet another broken promise. she just wanted to help, she always just wanted to help. Alder's met quite a few like her over the years--hell, even Nicte wasn't unlike that in the beginning--but Tally's different. Tally's special, and Alder's known it from the moment Tally offered herself up as a biddy. but the problem is that Alder corrupts. it's what she's always done from her earliest days. her sister (always 'her sister,' never Abigail. easier to keep the memories and the grief at arm's length if she keeps her thoughts impersonal), every single one of her biddies over so many lifetimes, Nicte, and so many countless others. but Tally hurts the worst because after it all, after all of the let-downs, the lies, the broken promises Tally still hasn't left. she still hasn't given up on her. even now, Alder can hear her singing from somewhere far away, but without the Mycelium she can't travel, and she's so weak she can't spare the energy for a response, but goddess help her, she's not giving up like this. she promised Tally, and for reasons she can't (shouldn't? won't.) articulate, she wants more than anything to keep her promise for once. for Tally. and so with the last of her strength (and the knowledge that one wrong seed might bring the entire mountain down on her, but that's just a risk she'll have to take if it means getting back to Tally), she sings.

also?? who cares if you agree with joel’s choice? it’s a brilliant character moment. it’s the perfect climax of how much joel has attached to ellie — a parallel to him and sarah. he has lost so much that he is driven by this fear and grief and desire to protect. because he can’t fail again. it’ll break him.

and then ellie!!! ellie who has the burden of the world on her shoulders at fourteen, all because of a tragedy of her own where she had to kill her best friend. then we see with sam how desperate she is to try and help. she has deep survivor’s guilt. she feels like she has to make up for it w/ this magical immunity of hers that everyone is promising will save the world (they don’t know that for sure btw). and this ending of the first game kind of hurts her relationship w/ joel bc she doesn’t fully trust him as much anymore.

good character writing is when the characters have motivations that coincide with what we’re shown about their personalities and their experiences. all characters think they are right - that’s what makes them good characters! the conflict! the intrigue!

the ending of tlou is so sharp bc it’s a great lead up to game ii and just a perfect summation of ellie and joel’s characters. they’re both stubborn and forced into violence they don’t want. and it’s tragic for the both of them.
