TGCF Audio Drama Ep 12: XL asks for HC's company for one night
[context: this scene is just after the gambler's den dice throwing scene, they're back in the gambler's den as SQX said they need a distraction to investigate ghost city more, and XL volunteered to cause a distraction via gambling HC again]
Ghost: One wonders what prize this Daozhang wants to gamble our Lord Chengzhu for. Will it be mountains of gold and seas of silver, or a century's worth of spiritual powers? Will it be ten strokes of good fortune, or a plot of paradise?
XL: There is no need. All the treasures in the world are not what I seek. I only wish to ask Hua Chengzhu to spend one night with me. [1]
HC: (surprised) Hmm? (laughs)
Ghosts: AH??!
Ghost 1: Does he hear himself? Isn't he being far too bold!
Ghost 2: This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone daring to ask this type of request from Chengzhu!
Ghost 3: People really can't be evaluated by their appearances, this little Daozhang is bolder than he looks!
XL: Wait! I only meant that I simply want to ask Hua Chengzhu to play host to me, to take me out for one night to see the full sights of Ghost City, that's all. I wouldn't bring up any outrageous demands!
Ghost 1 (suggestively, implying sexual innuendos): Daozhang, what kind of "outrageous demands" do you mean? Is it to do this this this, or that that that?
Ghost 2: Yes yes yes, describe it to us clearly in detail!
XL: It's really not like that, everyone has misunderstood! All I meant was that I want to ask Hua Chengzhu to accompany me tonight, to stroll around...
Ghosts: Wow! 'Tonight'? Xiao Daozhang, you're really eager and impatient!
SQX: You'd better not explain any further, you're making it worse!
XL: I! I... I really don't mean anything else!
SQX: I know! But listening to you say it, it really sounds very... Aiya!
[*Translation note:]
what XL said literally means "to accompany me for one night", but it was taken by the ghosts as sexual innuendo because it can also be interpreted to mean XL wants HC's (sexual) company for one night. I decided to play up the innuendo when translating for fear that the innuendo wouldn't be as obvious in eng

Oh, yeah. Really the only downside to writing fics is when a character is vastly diff from you. Now I have to teach myself all these things that they would be knowledgeable in. Agreed, I feel like the androids could be committing all these crimes and get away with it, especially the more advance ones like Connor and Nines
A Court of Thorns and Roses? I’ve seen that title floating around. There is an artist I follow who mentioned it before but I don’t really know anything about it. Oh, I’ve read the Giver and the other books in the series. I had a friend who owned the books so I read them. I don’t really remember what happens in them since it’s been so long. The book is called Queer Transfigurations: Boys Love Media in Asia by James Welker. What I like about the book is that they have more than one voice (21 contributors specializing in different fields) to analyze the subject material. Tho I’m not sure how popular the book is so I don’t know if it’ll be in bookstores
Ok, I’ll just start with meatbun and mxtx novel carrds
Meat bun:
2ha - https://erhainfo.carrd.co/
Yuwu - https://stainsoffilth.carrd.co/#
Bab - https://babmeatbun.carrd.co/
MXTX
Tgcf - https://stanhualian.carrd.co/
Mdzs - https://stanwangxian.carrd.co/
Svsss- https://svsssmxtx.carrd.co/#
No worries about not knowing chinese! English is one of the more popular languages that they are translated into. Spanish? What words do you know in spanish??? I know spanish as well! It makes me happy when others know other languages even if it is just a couple words!!
Other works that I’ve enjoyed that should still have english translations up; I’ve added both the carrds and direct link to the english translations:
https://qi-weishang.carrd.co/ (https://chrysanthemumgarden.com/novel-tl/twf/ - direct link to the english translation)
https://dpubfttb.carrd.co/ (https://chrysanthemumgarden.com/novel-tl/dpubftb/ - direct link to the english translation)
https://misvil.carrd.co/# (https://chrysanthemumgarden.com/novel-tl/misvil/ - direct link to the english translation)
https://tihc.carrd.co/#about (two diff groups translated parts of the story so I don’t have a direct link to the english translations but you can find them in the link section of the carrd!)
Sorry, this response was so short. Idk why but lately I’ve been feeling so drained 🙃😭. Maybe I just need a long nap 😴
XD Yeah! That's it basically! It's why I stress so much over writing Vash. Man's got like, 100+ years of knowledge in there and a lot of details are not shared about Gunsmoke/No Man's Land. And them androids gotta have books and books of knowledge up in there. Those of the RK line can pre-generate outcomes and choose the best suited one, and oh boy, I'm gonna have to put way more effort and thought into their actions than any other character I think I've written so far, and I already have to do this with a few characters I'm writing fics for currently that take a lot of brain power. There's a fic I wanna write for a fandom I have not posted for yet, and I just… Worry that I won't be able to properly capture the character in question because he's just so different from me and in canon, he's kinda like Vash in that he puts up a front and I honestly… Can't tell what's an act and what's not. He's very eccentric and I… XD Fear I won't be able to capture it, or how he really feels inside. I really wanna write it though. At some point, but probably not any time soon. My thought process was basically: "Oh shit. They'd make the best yanderes. 👀"
:0 Oh cool! XD I don't either! I think the way I heard about it was I was listening to someone's book reviews on Youtube? For a while, I was super into trying to find good book series that suited my tastes, but I kinda fell into the habit of just buying books and never reading them? <.< I lost interest in a lot of hobbies I enjoyed a lot before and reading happened to be one of them. I've started to get back into it now, but… Yeah. !! I thought there were more books beyond it! I'll have to look out for them in the future, see if the store I buy books at get them eventually. Surprised me to see it on the shelf, you know? It's an older book, and quite a few go out of print after a while, leaving me looking on places like Amazon for used copies. I honestly don't remember much of the series either, I'll be honest, just that it's about a boy and a baby his family is taking care of? I just remember it was really dark and the first book left on a cliffhanger. :0 Oh wow! 21! That's amazing! I don't know either. :/ I don't think I've seen it where I live, but I'll keep an eye out!
:0 Omg! Thank you so much! I'm gonna be pulling all of these up lol.
Yeah, Spanish! :D You too?!? Awesome! X'D Oh gosh! My Spanish has gotten super rusty! I've forgotten a lot. It's only the kinds of things you'd learn taking it for two years in high school, simple stuff like hotel and restaurant questions, how to introduce yourself, say your age and the days of the week, food names, emotions, feelings, creating simple sentences,… I let myself fall off if I'm honest mostly because I really had no opportunity to actually use it in my daily life beyond actively trying and going out of my way and/or going into online Spanish spaces as I don't know many Spanish speakers around here.
:0 Oh cool! Thank you so much! I will be checking all of these out!
Hey, no worries! Put your needs first, okay? Stay hydrated, take some time to yourself to just relax and rest. Take as long as you need to respond to me, okay? Don't ever feel pressured.

I rag on Nathan's costumes too, but sometimes it gets a little annoying how like... obsessed people are with it? Like if the man wants to wear comfy exercise shirts, let the man wear comfy exercise shirts. If he wants to dress as a flaming hot cheeto, more power to him.
Also stop reading weird stuff into his costumes. Guy just wants to be max comfortable out there and he happens to also have no sense of fashion. Like I said, I poke fun at them too, but lay off lol.
(Being said bring back the Mama Chen made shirt for Rocketman. Bus seat shirt at the Olympics ftw.)

One thing I really wish I could show everyone is Toller Cranston’s 1986 free skate to the Goncharov soundtrack. He did it at the World Professional Championships, several years after he retired from amateur competition, and it’s absolutely breathtaking.
Toller was known as a skater who pushed artistic boundaries with his work, and his Goncharov was no exception. Portraying the dual roles of Goncharov and Katya, apparent in both costume and choreography, Toller somehow managed to convey, in his language of movement, both the desperate femme fatale that was Katya and the hardened, pained persona was Goncharov. At one point he makes it look as if he is dancing a duet. Is it a dance of a love lost, or of one that never existed at all? Are the two dancers thinking of other people entirely? It’s up to us to decide. Toller gives us no answer.
This program was extremely under-appreciated at the time, and it’s very hard to find, sadly. At the competition itself, figure skating’s conservative judges were tepid on it, and in its place, a showy Scott Hamilton program was the winner. My grandma taped it off tv when it aired, and that’s how I saw it. I still remember watching it years after it aired on that grainy VHS. It was my first experience with Goncharov, and it was so memorable to this day.

ugh you're right T.T i'm sorry @ lan xichen 😭😭 imma cleanse my tl once again! but yeah, you're def right that ppl will ship anything 💀 i'm kinda curious tho on your take as to why there's always a bit of anti wangxian or lwj hate in the fandom? i have been seeing a lot of trolls but still, it's really odd esp when compared to tgcf or svss? Sorry if that's weird to ask T.T
Re THIS post (I also added another quote to it, I kept looking for it earlier)
Hahah (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡. No worries. I think this post answered it really well. Basically WWX and LWJ are hard for people to project on.
To me they're an ideal love. LWJ loves WWX and prioritizes his wellbeing and happiness, and WWX loves LWJ and prioritizes his wellbeing and happiness. That strikes a perfect balance, but it requires a certain amount of compromise from both sides. I see more and more how people are resentful of that concept. They want the character they're projecting on to make no compromise to just be adored, coddled, worshipped without having to make any allowances for what makes the other person happy. WangXian are so well matched mentally, emotionally, physically... also in terms of world views that they don't have to make much of an effort. It's just surface stuff. But certain people keep a running tally of everything they do for someone and what they got in return. So it pisses them off.

I LOVE YOUR PORN AU!!!!! LIKE SO MUCH - and i'm just. if you don't mind me asking, how - the way you flesh out the characters, their motivations, and feelings in every scene in such an eloquent way, and just little things here and there, a habit or an activity that adds dimension to who they are, and - your prose is wonderful. you achieve this addictive, engrossing narrative space that readers just absolutely melt into, and i have to ask - how did you develop your writing style? 1/2
what books did you read that formatively shaped the way you write? or you know, what did you do to improve your writing? i'm so in awe of how you world-built and established the porn au - like lqg & hc being national taolu champions?? how do you come up with that stuff? i cannot comprehend the amount of research and effort that must've gone into porn au, and i'm just so deeply thankful that you decided to share that with us. i apologize if i'm coming on too strong, but wow. thank you 2/2
--
oh my god please don't apologize, when i saw your ask i rolled on the floor giggling hysterically for a solid 15 min, bless your heart
part of the answer to your question—i've taken like, 8 years' worth of creative writing classes/workshops! there was also a transnational literary component to my degree so whenever possible, i took literature classes fksjdfksd so whatever you see and like is definitely the result of a lot of work. My writing from not even 10 years ago but like, 5? horrid, ridiculous, wild, cringe. The Porn AU itself is the second draft of a MUCH more lackluster piece.
about my writing style. gosh, you really know how to make a writer blush. "I like your writing style" is literally an instant kill LMFAO okay okay, the useful answer: my primary criteria for choosing what to write is, don't be obvious, be interesting. Fiction tells us to show, not tell, right? Poetry is about concretizing the abstract. Screenwriting says cut all useless lines. A lot of writing rules and advice—never start with the weather, avoid detailed descriptions of the characters, don't use adverbs, etc.—are all really about this exact sentiment.
I once took a seminar on writing for horror movies. The golden rule of the horror genre is Never Show the Monster, because whatever the audience is imagining is always going to be scarier than what you actually show them. There are obviously exceptions to this (to all writing rules), but in my mind, it's all the same principle.
LONG answer under the cut
So you start with building a scene. I approach it like essay-writing—I state my thesis for the motivations/main propulsion of the plot. "In this scene, LQG and SY are motivated to save Cang Qiong's porn production, so they have sex on camera." Then you build the sub-motivations: "LQG is also doing this because he's pining after SY."
I learned this "thesis-writing" from theater, specifically from writing 10-min plays. Theater is all about characters being driven by their wants and needs, and the reason I say 10-min plays in particular is because longer forms of writing will give you more leeway, but in 10-min, you pretty much need your character motivations established from their very first line. That's why you need that very clear thesis for yourself—if you don't even know what the character wants from the get-go, then you can't establish who they are, what they want, and where they're going to go in a dynamic and interesting way.
So this thesis drives EVERYTHING that happens in your scene, just like an actual thesis for an essay, just like topic sentences for your paragraphs. Once I do this, I have the emotional direction & narrative scope of how much this scene will cover, I have a sense of where it begins and ends. "Begin with the dynamics of their sex. LQG starts showing signs of his feelings. Reveal LQG backstory for exactly what those feelings are and why he isn't telling SY. The rest of the scene implies that LQG's feelings may not be so unrequited, but also sets up the fundamental problem at the heart of the whole fic—SY's inability to comprehend his own feelings." This is kind of my new thesis now. They're having sex; LQG pines; SY doesn't know he himself is pining.
Now it's time to manifest. This is the "storytelling" part, and the hardest lmfao.
Personally, my approach is largely shaped by my very cool screenwriting teacher, who hammered into us: don't fucking waste lines. The Golden Rule of screenwriting is that every line should reveal something new. I found my old writing kind of repetitive, especially on the emotional front, so this is kind of my editing mantra now—is this line either propelling the story or revealing character? If it's revealing character, is it a revelation that has to happen right now, or is it slowing the momentum of the scene?
But these aren't rhetorical questions! "Momentum" doesn't just mean tumble forward as fast as you can, it also means taking the time to draw the bowstring back further, so your next move has even more propulsion. That's why you get the little "LQG has been in love with SY..." cut scene in the middle of the fucking (at least, that's my reasoning for putting it there). Every line has to bring a fresh revelation that "proves" your thesis further.
That brings me to the details. You said you like the details I inject into the world-building, and honestly that's so gratifying to hear, because that means I'm successfully manifesting my intentions, y'know? "Every line has to bring new info" kind of sounds like a tall order, but the most effective way I've seen it done in books and onstage/onscreen is with these hyper-specific details. If you're writing a scene in which someone feels dirty, never have them just say that—have them say they want to take a shower. Show them running out of bleach again as they scrub down the stall after they wash. Begin the scene like "Steve always washes his throat first now." Then pack the scene with even more revelatory details: "Soap in hand, he heard the pipes above his head groan for a half note on adagio, and readied himself for the blast of icy water that always followed." Shitty shower, probably not rich, is likely a classical musician.
By the same token, I want to build LQG's character. The "Liu Qingge has been in love with Shen Yuan" section is the first insight we get into his background and perspective, right, so: I need to establish LQG's emotional context for filming this scene -> I can characterize him as a nut for martial arts in the same stroke -> so this takes place at a gym, beating up sandbags is a classic way of showing manly emotional distress -> so give me more details on this gym -> Puqi Gym, XL the martial god is obviously the owner -> how do I have XL & LQG a relationship beyond gym owner & client? They spar together -> I want XL & HC's position in this AU to mirror their god/ghost king statuses in TGCF canon -> how can I concretize their fighting prowesses in real-world details? -> they're martial arts champions -> what's an actual competitive martial art form that involves weaponry? -> wushu -> wikipedia Wushu, find taolu weapons sparring
(I just realized that in my songxiao daycare AU, Hualian are Olympic gold medalists by the same narrative logic laksjdnflaksjdnflsd)
So, that's the flow of logic behind my world-building lmao. It's all in the details. Leverage is one of my all-time favorite TV shows and the way they build their stories is super inspiring. If their thesis is "the rich and powerful take what they want, we steal it back for you," they manifest it in the most specific and concrete narratives: mine workers who like the work but are fighting for workplace safety vs. the money-grubbing mine owner who will blow up their livelihoods if it means a bigger payday; the little girl from Iraq with refugee status forced to be an accomplice to antique smuggling vs. international smuggler with a fetish for British royalty.
Last pieces of writing advice I've gotten: pay attention to the real world. A writing exercise we did was just sit in a public spot and make concrete observations on our surroundings. There are stories in everything!!! I learned to observe things like weird holes in the concrete (earthquake? drilling accident? bullet mark?), odd patches of moss or bird shit (look overheard: it's an AC unit dripping water for the former and nesting swallows for the latter), ladies in flipflops walking alongside ladies in high heels (excited mother walking her antsy daughter to the bus for the daughter's first job interview—the daughter's shirt collar is unfashionable and she's taking the bus, so there's a good chance the shoes were passed down, maybe from an office lady aunt. Maybe she's even overdressed for the interview, so will her outfit be an unintended source of tension once she gets to the interview? Is it a group interview, to make the comparison more stark?).
Also, write what you know. You know why SY is a video editor in porn AU? Because I'm a video editor. One of my more popular MDZS fics is set in a plant shop 'cause I worked in a plant shop. SL was First AD in Bachelor!AU 'cause I was First AD on a set once. Concrete details like the editing software having a split-screen, always answering questions about how often to water plants, and being up until 3AM editing call-sheets are the ones that will fully immerse your readers.
And if you can't do the actual things, just watch someone who is, listen to them talk, pick up lingo, and fake it. I watched like a 15-min vox video on fencing for the fencing!AU and a 45-min music theory video on the hospital pianist!AU (also I started learning piano sklfjnlsdjlfkjsd). Of course, I just finished reading a wangxian fic that had me going, "holy fucking shit, the author is literally getting their masters in a music program" so my 45-min youtube video ain't shit, but if you just need a little bit of character establishment, then it's enough to do the trick.
Anyways, tl;dr. Find the details, find the tension. Never tell outright what the tension is supposed to be, manifest it instead. Make the manifestation as interesting as possible, and if it's meant to be funny, make it funnier.
Sorry this turned into a fucking lecture lskjnflskdjnflskd but last thing, someone asked me before if I had formative authors, and this was the list I wrote at the time:
Angels in America (play) by Tony Kushner
The God of Small Things (novel) by Arundhati Roy
The Penelopiad (novel) by Margaret Atwood
“Litany in Which Certain Things are Crossed Out” (poem) by Richard Siken
Night Sky with Exit Wounds (poetry) by Ocean Vuong
Giovanni’s Room (novel) by James Baldwin (and then Go Tell it on the Mountain and then his essays)
Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger
And, ooh, now that I have this list I think I can even roughly sort it as such: Kushner, Atwood, Siken, and Salinger I really latched onto for their dialogue and very present narrator voice—same is true for Go Tell it on the Mountain. Roy, Vuong, and Giovanni’s Room, I think, are texts more representative of the kind of saturated figurative language I like, and emulate. Of course they all do imagery and voice and overall structure amazingly, but that’s the rough dividing line I’d draw.
But yeah James Baldwin is my fucking hero.

srsly tho, like as a twt dual citizen (yeah that one person coined the phrase and I suddenly decided it was apt), I feel like tumb ppl don't really know the mass amounts of shit fan tlers have gone thru/probably still go thru.
Like for example reposting of the tgcf tl was a HUGE problem, it seemed like every little bit of time some new repost popped up on wattpad. And that was hugely stressful for the tlers to have to deal with, in addition to their day jobs and translating their various projects etc.
And then there was a while when it became popular to publicly shit on ExR, and a bunch of ppl announced they were gonna tl mdzs, some even going so far as to say they were "saving you from the fujos." And that's why I cast a sort of suspicious eye to new unlicensed tls popping up. Bc there was a period of like, mdzs tl fast fashion, where ppl were hopping on it for clout it seemed, and the quality wasn't great (one person even bragged on their twt about translating a chap in 4 hours 8) ), and these tended to fizzle out after maybe up to a dozen or so chaps when ppl realized how much work translating is.
And ppl complain all the time about tl speed and asking for/demanding more chaps. There was this prolific translator lianyin who was tling Nan Chan and a bunch of others, and they were putting out new chaps like... every few days or something? And people were still complaining to them about being slow. For context, ExR was putting out a chap a week of mdzs back in the day, and that's already been acknowledged as being quite fast. (I feel like I remember seeing some discussion somewhere where someone said yeah quality suffered a bit bc of speed, but it may have been a third party discussion not something said by K)
Like, I think a lot of ppl on tumb don't really know this, bc they just see the text the tler puts out, and maaybe their reactions to something if it gets big enough and someone crossposts 8). But being on twt and following tlers, it does strike me just how much crap they put up with on the backend, on top of everything else.
Like, think of ppl in fandom who prioritize readers over authors in their attitudes and such. As much as some ppl will treat authors like they should be outputting machines, ppl are at least as bad, if not worse, to tlers. And with the whole edited machine tl thing, it also added to some ppl's ideas that translating "isnt that hard" or "shouldn't take that long," or even people putting down human translators saying the edited mtl is just as good, etc. A lot of ppl seem to treat it like it's some kind of subscription service, where they can threaten the tler with no longer reading their stuff bc the edited mtl is faster. And like, yes fan tling is about love of the source material. But similarly like with fan authors, you also share it bc you wanna SHARE that love, and to be treated like the way Karens treat retail workers would in fact be incredibly disheartening, discouraging, frustrating, etc.
And I can only imagine that what ends up getting shared on twt is only a fraction of the shit your average fan tlers goes thru. Some ppl, like lianyin, it's not even themselves sharing or venting abt it, I think, I think it was like comments they got on their chaps or their tweets or ppl complaining in general & ppl reacting (bc.. yeah).
And like... at the end of the day, I do think there is an entitlement issue in the greater fandoms. Similar attitudes to the way ppl treat fanfic authors, with the prioritization of reader needs at the expense of the author/tler.

3 Sentence Ficathon VI
NO ONE STOPS!
More fics from 3 Sentence Ficathon! :D
2 MDZS, 2 TGCF, 1 KH
....none of these are 3 sentences.
Any, any/any, "oh, you're shy." (The Untamed, Wen Chao & Wen Zhuliu)
Wen Zhuliu was a man of few words. It added to his mystique, he was told, and he was often praised for his composure and stoicism (which, when coming from Sect Leader Wen, Wen Zhuliu suspected he just despised backtalk and was sending a message to anyone else present), but he didn’t really want to be known as the silent type. There was a lot he had to say… he just wasn’t good at saying it.
It was something of a relief for him when he was assigned to be Young Master Wen Chao’s retainer – many others grimaced at the thought when no one was looking (and the ones who grimaced at the thought when someone was disappeared quickly), and indeed Wen Chao had many faults and undesirable qualities, but Wen Zhuliu didn’t mind. Because the first time they’d met, in not even an incense stick’s worth of time, Wen Chao took a long look at his face and realized.
“Oh. You’re shy.”
-
2p39 Any, any/any, it seemed like a good idea at the time (The Untamed, Wangxian)
“What happened to him?” Wen Qing asked, her hopeful relief turning quickly into alarm as Wei Wuxian finally made his reappearance in the Lanling alleyway with an unconscious Lan cultivator on his back. The cultivator rested his head on Wei Wuxian’s shoulder and had his arms wrapped around tightly – he seemed very happy there.
“Drunk,” Wei Wuxian explained tiredly. “Hey don’t give me that look – I didn’t do it! It was that bastard Jin Zixun – bet he thought it was a good idea at the time.”
“What happened?” Wen Qing asked, because she still didn’t quite understand how that translated to an unconscious cultivator (was that Lan Wangji?) on Wei Wuxian’s back.
“The infamous Lan alcohol intolerance,” Wei Wuxian said ominously. “Lan Zhan drank the wine and, well… I don’t think we’ll need to worry about the Jin for a little while. Anyway, Lan Zhan is a clingy drunk so he’s coming to Qiongqi Path with us now. Let’s go.”
Wen Qing had a feeling there was a lot more he wasn’t telling her, but it could wait until after they found her brother.
-
any, any, the gift you couldn't give (TGCF, He Xuan)
He’d had both fans repaired – it had been on a whim; why leave such valuable spiritual tools ruined?
The Wind Master’s fan had been returned under emergency circumstances; it wasn’t a gift, and He Xuan wasn’t disappointed to see it break again after a single use.
He made sure the Water Master’s fan was better reinforced after that, but he wouldn’t return it; after seeing the face Shi Qingxuan made when remembering him, He Xuan didn’t want to see the face he’d make when reunited with something of his brother’s.
Any, any, arguing over the correct version of something handed down via oral tradition (TGCF, Xie Lian + Others)
In the Mid-Autumn Festivals that followed, it became a tradition for the gods to find the best version of a play depicting their epic showdown against the Heavenly Emperor, and watch it together. In the early years, the plays were generally accurate in so far as mortals could understand the events that transpired that week, but as time went on, it became less about finding a good play, and more about finding an interesting one.
“What the heck is this? Since when was the human array set up on Mount Tonglu!”
“I don’t remember the Water Tyrant having an army of skeletal fish.”
“Lord Rain Master struggled against the rats and had to be rescued? Did General Pei commission this one?”
“Did His Highness really transform into a giant after a kiss from Crimson Rain and fight the Heavenly Capital one on one? Your Highness, can you do that?”

Any fandom, any character, the Improbably Named Contraption of SCIENCE! (KH, TLS Trio)
“I was trying to test the limits of our emotionlessness,” Vexen explained. “See if we might still be susceptible under the right circumstances, which is I why I created her: The Mobile Autonomous Romance Youth, Special Unformed Edition.”
Xaldin warily glanced out of the room, where the “Romance Youth” with its ever-changing hair and eye colors was being fawned over by the rest of their unemotional comrades. “Brand new replica technology and you couldn’t think of a better use for it?”
Lexaeus sighed a heavy sigh. “You couldn’t think of a better name for it?”

Hey nyerus!! May I ask where I can read the TGCF manhua? I don't mind raws either!! :3
Hello!!!
1.) Official Bilibili LinkThis is the Chinese raws, published by Bilibili! The chapters are paid, however its quite affordable and worth it in my opinion–I paid like less than $6 for vol 1+2 together, extras, and including exchanges and all. Even though the site is in Chinese, if you have an iPhone, all you need to do is download the app and make a Bilibili account. Then you can purchase the volumes or individual chapters as you would any other in-app purchase with your AppleID. If you have an Android, it’s more difficult, as it requires Alipay which is Chinese bank acc linked only. Thus you’ll need a friend with an iPhone to buy you the manhua on your account or gift it to you. Once bought, it can be viewed on any browser and on any device. (Currency doesn’t transfer between operating systems though for some reason, but it’s not that big a deal)
2.) Suibian SubsThis team has been doing high-quality translations for TGCF. You’ll need to join their discord server to access links, but it’s quite easy. They have a guide up on their tumblr if you’d like.
3.) MiqqumiTwitter user Miqqumi has been doing very quick and good TLs for each chapter as well–and in fact has today’s chapter up and ready to go already!!
**MangaDex also has the first 12 chapters (vol. 1) up so far. The other 10ish chapter may be added sooner or later (possibly by Suibian Subs).
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. ♡♡♡
If you can, please support STARember and the manhua team by purchasing it (which also helps us unlock special videos!) because WOWIE look at that incredible art!!! TGCF stans really won with our manhua!!! ♡♡♡♡♡♡

@imaginaryelle replied to your post:*me sipping tea* (x)
I would really enjoy seeing more of your thoughts on this, if you ever want to share them.
:’) a lot of my thoughts are salty rants and I’m TGCF on main right now so uhhh not at the moment but if you wanna hmu on like a chat thing of some sort I probably will eventually rant about my dislike of The MXTX Antis and the Problematic Culture people and the purity culture wank :’)
actually you know what, since I’m a parody of myself and I’m like always mood of "and another thing,” I’m just going to. go for it ig
Tumblr media
so my biggest thing, is with the MXTX antis/MDZS wank/MXTX wank. is like....god it FRUSTRATES me so fckn much lmfao in so many ways and on so many levels.  like listen. I’m not saying there isn’t stuff to critique in MDZS. But there’s people who are first off: critiquing the writing quality, when I’m like “there’s like a 90% chance you’re reading the EN translation, and probably from ExR, and honestly I know it’s not fandom etiquette to critique fan content bc we’re all doing this for free out of passion, BUT I do, in fact, have some major issues with ExR’s translation quality, and also I lowkey feel like they have a strong traditional yaoi bias and sometimes it leaks through in how they handle certain things.” Big mood of this twitter thread about how when you’re reading in TL you can’t be criticizing the writing bc you’re already reading it filtered and like. you gotta consider things like the TL’s own personal biases or takes, etc. Which I feel like some people don’t in their critique, or at least they don’t take the time to acknowledge it and instead start spinning off into more and more impassioned reactions to perceived slights or faults.
The other thing is like. I admit when I first read MDZS - which I did while simultaneously watching bc I was kind of using CQL as a vehicle to get into MDZS, I had the HARDEST time trying to read ExR’s translation when I was going into it cold many many many moods ago rip - I was also squicked out by the explicit scenes shown. It did remind me a lot of traditional yaoi tropes, and I wasn’t into it. HOWEVER I was also a psych major, and I want to point out that the T/N’s do read to me as having a strong yaoi bias, and also before ExR redid their site they had large “SERVING YAOI AND BL” banners on EVERY page lol. And I think that also primes people to see things a certain way. (I just. am :/ about ExR also bc like... their whole vibe as a “yaoi scanlator” and also I. can’t be sure the TL wasn’t 17 when they were tl’ing it lmfao,,  and they did the whole rant - which fine they apologized for, but I think sort of reflects on a general attitude still w/ the team - about how some other TL had bad quality or something, but their existing TL has a lot of clunky English phrasing and actually a lot of editing issues, too, I was creating myself a back-up copy from their site and like google docs was already catching a bunch of typos and tense issues and such :’) and that’s beyond clunky EN translation phrasing. I just am like. they have a patreon lol, so I can’t say ExR is doing it wholly not-for-profit/dollars, and also like... it’s not like they’re licensed? I get that within scanlation circles, there’s an etiquette of “first come first serve,” but with translation, I think fans are only served with more translations? but I also care about the original work lol, I mean I get the vanity of “I want MINE to be the AUTHORITATIVE tl” bc I feel that mood too, but also I’m like. fam you didn’t bid for a license lmao.)
But yeah like. My petty gripes with ExR aside lmfao, I think when you look at WangXian, the whole “it’s yaoi tropes” gets really strawman. Like from a Watsonian perspective, I mean like... both WWX and LWJ really ARE useless virgins, lol, WWX’s first kiss was stolen by LWJ and his whole idea of sex comes from porn; LWJ is GusuLan and like. yeah. Who is teaching them about lube? certainly not porn. (but this also gets into the whole. like people saying explicit material is “problematic” because it doesn’t show “realistic” sex and I’m like. fam it’s smut, not a sex manual.) And like... they’re both kinky and WWX has a pregnancy kink, and like... good for them I guess?
From a more Doylist perspective..... I think for me, I’m like. well why not? gay media doesn’t have to be uwu to be “Valid,” and like, the people who start attacking mxtx personally because of the way she chose to write WangXian, or saying she’s homophobic because of WangXian or she doesn’t have the range... I already Know they didn’t read TGCF or SV lol. (and yeah SV is more “problematic” but I also think it’s VERY genre aware and both satirizes and also plays with and subverts some of the typical genre “problematic” things. not everything, but like. again the whole idea that non-mainstream media needs to be held to a higher standard to not be cancelled? I don’t hold by that). [But more on the Doylist thing: it’s dumb to me that people react like it’s a moral failing of non-straight works if they don’t fit EXACTLY their personal idea of what a thing should be. And this comes up EVERY time there’s some new thing. hell it’s not even just lgbt-related stuff; Hamilton, Crazy Rich Asians, etc all had nitpicking. Which again, isn’t invalid! but also like. :/ because we DON’T have enough representation right now to pick, and my take is always: the solution is to get to the point where we can pick and choose and can afford to have bad media just like the straights/whites do :’)]
The thing about WWX and LWJ is neither of them, as they’re written in canon, fit within “traditional yaoi” seme/uke stereotypes. The kiss I see people rail against as “dubcon” and also their sex scenes but I’m like. yeah I think it’s fine to say it’s not your cup of tea but to say that that makes them traditional yaoi rapey tropes I’m like. Fam that’s not it lol. LWJ is shown as being SO incredibly responsive and attentive to WWX’s wishes and desires. I mean that’s examples of his passion exploding out, but we consistently see LWJ being respectful of WWX’s wishes and autonomy even when it like. fucks him/them over :’) like when WWX was so hell-bent on hurtling down the mo’dao route :’)
plus also WWX literally fantasizes about them retiring as farmers and he’s the one out working the fields and LWJ is staying at home weaving lol, like c’mon, ya wanna talk gender roles, let’s talk about this.
the other thing is the whole mxtx anti stuff about “she’s homophobic” and “she’s a filthy fujo” and I think there’s issues that people aren’t considering, which I don’t know as much about but I feel like it informs my consideration of mxtx - such as like... not everyone’s internet is as wide open as, like, the West. I don’t know so much about Chinese censorship other than it exists, but I’m like. I think this would affect people’s access to resources which would inform them about how things work/where people are with LGBT thought? It reminds me of when young tumblr kids trash talk older queer people for using terms they see as “problematic” now, and I’m like “you really gotta pause a moment of (1) have some empathy (2) consider the person’s individual personal and cultural context.” MDZS wasn’t made for a Western audience in mind lol, it’s not going to reflect Western values! And China has a different history with its LGBT progression and it’s m/m media, which I don’t know enough about to comment specifically, but I think it’s incredibly disingenuous to judge it based on Western standards. A lot of people probably don’t realize they are! in that it doesn’t even occur to them, which is why they feel so free with their judgment! But also I’m like. lowkey THAT’s a problem for me bc of like. cultural imperialism lmfao. and also reflective of EN-language imperialism, when people are judging EN tl’s they’re seeing on face value without realizing or considering that they’re...reading... a translation... and that translations are NOT in fact direct one-for-one and that there’s a LOT of considerations that go into both translating and reading a translation of a work.
I think the points antis pull up against MXTX is like... stuff she’s said before in interviews - and I don’t know from when, but I imagine years ago at this point - where she was asked about shipping the other characters in MDZS, and she said something I think about how to her, she wants to write in a way that “preserves realism” or maybe she believes in (I only read a TL of it, so I hold the exact phrasing with a grain of salt), and for her, not everyone is gay so she doesn’t write all of her named characters gay. and I’m like. whatever that’s her prerogative as the author. And I think there’s also something that I don’t know if it’s an official “rules”/”guidelines” she wrote bc again I’ve only seen secondhand/thirdhand sources, but it’s something mxtx-antis also quote, where she said to not break up the main couples and also don’t “reverse” them. but again when we’re getting into the shou/gong dynamics, that’s where I don’t feel comfortable commenting because I don’t know enough about the sociopolitical implications of these terms and how they interact within that fandom/community subset. But I do think people need to be taking the stuff they read - ESPECIALLY if they’re only reading it in EN - with a grain of salt. or like a big ol pinch of it.
edit: I know more about this now lmao and I know exactly which question people use piecemeal of vilify her. Here’s a recent-ish translation someone did. Read it through - the WHOLE thing, and think about the wider context.
But also in general I just don’t think anyone is valid when we start getting into ad hominems lol. Especially when I feel like they’re not really taking a moment to consider what wider contexts and influences might be at play and instead are playing Tumblr telephone with outrage and virtue signalling
sidebar: I also fucking HATE CQL purists lmfao. I don’t feel like I’ve seen or encountered anyone saying CQL fans are less valid than novel fans except in the sense of CQL fans getting defensive about their dislike of the novel - which, whatever, people have opinions - or decision not to read the novel and saying anyone saying they HAVE to read the novel is gatekeeping - which I hold to less but mostly bc I think it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of fan language, some of us say you HAVE to read it not in a neckbeard way but in a I’m so desperately passionate and I want more people to know about this way, kind of like how the “I hate you” in fan language GENERALLY means “I love it so much and I can’t stand it”? - but I HAVE seen people say the novel “ruined” wangxian, or CQL people who seem to be like... purity-wanking, like idk if you were around but god after Infinity War and the number. of fckn ironstranges. posting in the tags. about “love how healthy our ship is” and I’m like. this is still anti culture/purity wank but the other side of the coin 8). I encounter sometimes this lowkey attitude of CQL (or other adaptations) “redeeming” MDZS from the author, and I’m like. y’all are wack lmfao. There’s people wiht MDZS or even TGCF main, and they hate mxtx? and they say shit like “mdzs was only good on accident”? and I’m like. can you just leave lmfao. if you hate her then why are you here. (bc they’ve mental gymnastics this into a virtue ethics thing about “o the work is good and therefore morally fine but the parts I don’t like are because mxtx is morally bad and unworthy and tainted it, and CQL with its Purity has Redeemed it” but I’m like. this is because of censorship lmao. The team did a FANTASTIC job working the character dynamics and story, but like it also is directly because of censorship.)
like I... have more thoughts than this lmfao bc ofc I do, but anyway, here’s... some of them lol
