explaining f1: tyres 🛞
first post in this series (will it be a series? we’ll see)
recently i think we’ve had some particularly interesting races in terms of tyre strategy and i readied in suzuka that i don’t totally understand it all, so this has been my little research project on tyres!
pirelli
pirelli are an italian tyre manufacturer who have been supplying f1 tyres since 2011. unlike some eras of f1, pirelli is currently the exclusive supplier in the sport.
in 2022, pirelli introduced a new 18-inch (the previous being 13-inch) tyre as part of sweeping changes to the technical regulations of the sport.
compounds
pirelli’s range is currently comprised of six ‘slick’ compounds (referred to as slick because they lack the grooves of normal road tyres - this is because these grooves exist to dispel water, something necessary for road tyres but that slows down an f1 car when not necessary) tyres, along with ‘intermediates’ and full ‘wets’ to account for weather conditions.
the six slick compounds (from hardest to softest) are referred to as follows: c0, c1, c2, c3, c4 and c5. from this range, pirelli pick three to be used at each grand prix, based on the track characteristics and climate.
the highest of the set is marked red and is known as the soft, the middle marked yellow and know as the medium, with the lowest marked white and known as the hard (intermediates are green and wets are blue).
theoretically, the softs have more grip over short periods of time, making them faster and better for qualifying runs. generally, the hard and medium compounds are more favourable on race day because they last longer.
rules
on most weekends, drivers are given 13 sets of slicks, 4 intermediates and 3 wets, with a set of softs reserved for drivers who reach q3 (the final round of qualifying). all drivers must return 2 sets after each of the 3 practise sessions, meaning only 7 sets are left for qualifying and the race. drivers must also use at least two different slick compounds during the race (provided the weather is dry).
on sprint weekends, the number of dry sets are reduced to 12. after the sprint, drivers must return the set they completed the most laps on.
tyre allocation is on a per-driver basis, teammates cannot share or swap tyres. in bahrain in 2020, mercedes mistakenly put bottas’ tyres on russell’s car when attempting a double stack. the team was fined €20,000 for this.
drivers must run the same compound on all four wheels at all times.
strategy
tyre plan for the weekend is the decision of the team, generally based on information from pirelli, observed degradation over practise, the circuit and the weather forecast.
if rain is expected, teams can draw from their wet weather allocation, and so they don’t need to be as cautious with their dry weather tyres. if it’s hot, teams have to make sure they can cover plenty of tyre changes.
if track layout means overtaking is tough, teams may want a higher number of pitstops to stop drivers getting stuck behind rivals. also, if the track is walled (and so safety cars are more likely) teams may plan for more stops.
terminology
scrubbed: teams often ‘scrub in’ a set of tyres by running them briefly during practise, this means that when they are later used in the race, they warm up much faster than brand new tyres.
blistering: when the inner part of tyre heats more than the outer, creating minor explosions which damage the surface of the tyre.
graining: when the outer surface is hotter than the inside of the tyre, leading to the outside rubber flexing, breaking and sticking to the tyre.
flat spot: a patch where the surface of the tyre looses its curve. this is usually caused by a driving locking up by breaking too late, meaning the tyre scrapes along the ground.
deg or degradation: refers to a steady loss of tyre performance due to general wear.

Happy new years everyone!! Here’s what you could technically consider my last drawing of 2022, and first drawing of 2023 (since I started it in 22 but didn’t finish till 23). I tried to do a more game accurate pbody and atlas! Ofc it’s not 100% there, i’d have to pour a lot more time into the drawing to accomplish that, but I still think I got pretty close. Owning the figures definitely helps haha. Cheers to another year of loving portal 😍

@cassie-thorne: Max's art is literally the best and I love her work so much! She puts out bangers after bangers and I absolutely loved watching her style evolve and grow this year and I'm looking forward to seeing it next year too! I especially absolutely love how Max tackles lighting and backgrounds in her work, like it's so unique and each piece tells its own story too. I still have a lot of their stuff to explore, stalk and fan over, but their Raine artwork is just S-tier for me, like look at THESE THINGS: The villain arc, head empty still thinking about this, Trystan in a flowy lil dress and ofc their entire Raine x Aerin stuff because that's either the most depressing, poetic thing ever or a massive serotonin boost. currently reading: 'the book of form and emptiness' (2021) by ruth ozeki, i adoooore both feeling the flow of attention and detail in the narration and getting that dialogue between narrators! i'm around halfway; and currently on hold because the other one is getting very good, 'la casa como jardín' (2021) by xavier monteys, treating the house as a garden! fascinating perspective and i have yet to get to the best parts!! reminds me so much of the concept of mat buildings and toyo ito's mediatheque in sendai...!

Hi guys! Year is coming to a close and I don't have it in me to make another piece, so I thought I'd just go ahead and share this now 😁
Ok so hmm... not much to say in comparison to my 2022 one! I definitely feel my sense of color has changed; my color palettes are way more dark and muted in comparison to last years. I also didn't draw as much in general so there's less to compare to... I actually feel like I kinda regressed in rendering and color because of how many breaks I took LOL
Not to say I didn't improve on anything tho!! I just focused more on facial structure than anything for some reason 😭😭
additionally I also didn't hit a lot of goals I made from 2022 either. I feel like a lot of the art I made was mostly self-indulgent without thinking too hard about my technical skills... which I don't think is necessarily bad because I enjoyed making all of these pieces :3 art as a hobby is fun
For 2024 art goals, I'm gonna borrow my 2022 ones: do more interior spaces, dynamic framing, and ofc better anatomy! I also wanna challenge myself to make more original pieces if i ever feel inclined to... Fanart is my favorite thing to make but I gotta learn to pull from my own creativity sometimes lol
Tyvm for supporting me and my art!! 😭😭😭 sorry I don't have much to say this year.... I've been busy my first year of college learning design fundamentals and the commute there has been kicknig my ass SO HARD....... but yk what. fuck it we ball !!!!!!!! I feel like dumping out my box of OCs like one would do a box of lps so very long post filled with very many doodles ahead!
Reference for my Rainworld oc, Lost! He's an idiot kid I made for one joke but now he lives in my brain. I think I made this reference for him last year? Idk I don't remember. I'm just now realizing that Lost snuck into my V2 characterization lmao.
Elysium art of various ages! Made between 2021-2023 I believe. This is the oc I made before I knew what Ultrakill was and everyone thought I was making an Ultrakill joke. Tbh if it wasn't for the fact that I MADE Elysium and have their early sketches I wouldn't believe they weren't an Ultrakill reference either. Speaking of which, here's some animations from when Elysium was both a quadruped and a model of robot instead of an individual. These were both made for a class in 2021.
VERY old art (2020 I think? I wasn't using my screen tablet yet) that I normally wouldn't include if it weren't for the fact my friends would explode me if I mentioned Elysium and Lost without mentioning Nerve. She was an anxiety-ridden warforged cleric who got tragically sent to the vampire realm. Whenever Nerve comes up in discussion one of my friends brings up how I made him cry with her final speech. I don't remember tf I said lmao.
Art of my His Dark Materials OC, Zurial! Art would have been made 2022 onwards. I made her WAY back in 2019 before Hazbin Hotel even had a pilot but unfortunately now she looks like a Hazbin angel and I feel weird drawing her. Which is really unfortunate because I love her dearly, she's one of my favorite OCs. She's also the only oc I have who I've made a plushie for. Why did my character design have to accidentally look like the works of famous youtube animator Vivian Medrano T-T
(here's her plushie btw. I'm really proud of it lol.)
Here's Niphit, one of my Warframe OCs! Some of y'all might recognize her as my AO3 pfp, but her design has changed since then. The bottom reference sheet is her most recent design. She's kind of conceptually similar to Baeri/Sleet/-31 from SftBT, in terms of hacking shit and having a snout and teeth. Biggest difference is that she is a whole ass hivemind, usually pretty harmless, and also considered pretty young.
Shameless CR:K fanchild OC. Her name is Golden Parmesan Cheese Cookie (Parm or Parmesan for short) and she's also, like, an AI copy of a dead person. Or a dead person's soul trapped inside an eternal simulation? Either way she's got SO many issues. I have a massive chatfic wip from when I decided to try writeing something with her.
Okay I know technically this is a Homestuck OC but I like to say she's a Hiveswap OC. Because I played Hiveswap and loved it but never read Homestuck. Anyways her name is Vintan she's a yellowblood.
Whoa an original character! Yeah this is Corion, they come from my brain. I have a whole story concept about post-apocalyptic robot cowboys (and human cowboys) that I've done a couple doodles from but never written down. Corion serves as a sort of living taxi, guiding or carrying people across the wasteland. They are a secondary protagonist, I don't think I have art of Pike and Amelia, the actual protagonists. One funny fact about this universe is it contains a character named V1 (pronounced Vi, still written as V1) who I can no longer use for obvious reasons.
But yeah! Ramble over! Not anywere near all of them I just wanted to talk about my brain children XD
