New Year Countdown: Dec 21
You know what I really love? An arranged marriage fic. It's just. So good. So have some Dreamling arranged marriage. Don't try to make sense of the worldbuilding,; if I let myself think about it for more than 2 minutes I was going to spend three hours on the background and forget to actually write something useable.
Dec 21 - Dreamling - Arranged Marriage - Fairy lights
Dream ducked around a corner, away from the masses of guests his parents had found it necessary to invite to the wedding. They all wanted to congratulate him, and he was having a harder and harder time not responding with a demand that they produce some evidence that he was, in fact, fortunate.
An arranged marriage, in this day and age!
He’d known better than to argue with his father about it, though, so he’d had as little to do with the entire thing as he could get away with. He’d only met his new husband for the first time the previous afternoon, at the rehearsal. Dream had contrived to sit at the far end of the table from the man at the dinner, and then excused himself to his rooms immediately after the main course.
But he hadn’t been able to avoid the wedding itself, of course. He could only hope that his parents interpreted his flushed face as a new spouse’s excitement and not the towering fury he was suppressing.
The man was attractive enough, Dream had to concede that. But a handsome face could overlay any number of flaws -- only consider Desire, who was as spiteful as they were elegant.
Dream had no wish to learn Robert Gadling’s opinions of the match, or what he expected of Dream and their marriage, or even if they had a single thing in common. This entire thing was a farce, and Dream only wanted to go home and be left alone to mourn his life of contentment and books.
No one had noticed him missing yet. Or if they had, they assumed he’d just ducked off to the restroom. Maybe he could escape for an hour.
The hallway led away from the reception, ending in a set of double doors that overlooked a garden.
The garden was empty, it being entirely too cold for strolling outdoors, but it was decorated with fairy lights in case someone might want to look out a window.
Despite Dream’s feelings about the entire situation, the lights were pretty. He pushed through the doors and stepped out into the garden.
The frozen air was bracing; he drew a deep breath, feeling the cold burn in his lungs, then let it out again and watched the misty puff of condensation swirl up into the night. When the last wisps of his breath had disappeared, he began to walk, the twinkling lights filling his vision.
Halfway down the garden, he could no longer hear the noise of the reception, and he felt a fraction of tension ease from his shoulders. There was a bench there, under a cherry tree that was probably lovely in the spring, but at the moment was just a spread of bare branches clawing at the sky.
Dream sat, looking up through those branches at the lights and the stars.
He wasn’t sure how long he sat there. Long enough for the last of the residual warmth to have seeped away from his suit coat by the time someone said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize anyone else was out here.”
Dream blinked the stars from his eyes and turned to see-- Well, of course it was Gadling, wasn’t it? He turned his face back up to the sky. “Were you looking for me?”
“No,” Gadling said. “I try not to push in where I’m not wanted. I’ll leave now, if you like, only -- you look a bit chilled. Can I offer you my coat?”
Dream started to refuse, then realized his teeth were on the edge of chattering. “Thank you.”
When Gadling handed it over, it was still radiating the man’s own heat. Dream pulled it around his shoulders. “You may stay.”
He hadn’t intended it to come out so imperious, but Gadling merely smiled and sat at the other end of the bench. “I caught a glimpse of the lights and I wanted to come out and see them. They’re pretty.”
Dream glanced at his husband sidelong. “Yes, Mr. Gadling,” he agreed quietly. “They are.”
“Maybe,” Gadling added, “we can have something like this in our house?”
“That would be nice,” Dream said.
Gadling smiled a little. It was a small smile, but it creased lines by his eyes that suggested he smiled and laughed often.
That might be good, Dream thought. There wasn’t much laughter in his present life.
“And perhaps eventually,” Gadling continued, eyes fixed on the lights and not on Dream, “you will consent to call me Hob, like my friends do.”
“Are we to be friends, Mr. Gadling?”
Gadling’s smile faded, and he looked sad, a little. Wistful, perhaps. Dream wasn’t particularly adept at reading people, but Gadling’s eyes were gentle, perhaps even kind. “I would like that,” Gadling said. “If you should find me worthy of such an honor.”
Dream was still furious that he’d been pressed into this marriage, of course.
But perhaps... Perhaps he was not angry with Robert Gadling.

@cassie-thorne: Max's art is literally the best and I love her work so much! She puts out bangers after bangers and I absolutely loved watching her style evolve and grow this year and I'm looking forward to seeing it next year too! I especially absolutely love how Max tackles lighting and backgrounds in her work, like it's so unique and each piece tells its own story too. Some of my favourites: The Barbie Premier, Aislinn!, be gay solve crimes, themm and Cameron x Astrid
@fairymatchmaker : Joy's art is actually a masterpiece, like this is not just your everyday artist sorcery-shenaniganing, this is like the chad version. I absolutely love love love how they draw outfits and poses, like their attention to the small things is just insane. Thank you for sharing your wonderful art and being around in the fandom! @mydemonsdrivealimo: MJ's stuff exhuberates this 'cool' energy, like my guy, you could actually design those energy drink logos or comic book covers because each piece is just SO FUN, okay? @hydn-jpg: I love Hayden's work partially because each piece of art has its own fanbase (as it should). Last year I got a giveaway piece from them and it is still something I look back frequently because it's just so goddamn beautiful. Some of my favourites from them: just follow my lead, this adorable pick-up line, literally everything they'd created for the expression-memes this year, long time no see partner and okay, technically this is cheating but this is a piece from 2022, but this portrait of artura is just i'mma cry okay?
@oh-so-youre-a-nerd: Thia's work is nothing short of frightening (affectionate) witchcraft and I mean this in the most sincere way possible lmaoo. I still have a lot of their stuff to explore, stalk and fan over, but their Raine artwork is just S-tier for me, like look at THESE THINGS: The villain arc, head empty still thinking about this, Trystan in a flowy lil dress and ofc their entire Raine x Aerin stuff because that's either the most depressing, poetic thing ever or a massive serotonin boost. I hope to see more of your stuff on my dash next year <33
@erixafleur: I came across Erica's work after lurking in the Blades side of the fandom and I loved their MC Raya's redesign so much! Plus I loved the art style too because it gives me Disney animation vibes. I hope to explore your work even more next year! Some of my favs include: This vanity fair-themed art and oh my god their eyes, it def gives 'i'm so judging you' and I'm here for it XD , the cutest owlbear sketch EVER and this piece of Raya & Tyril
@rosefuckinggenius: Rose's been a consistent force in the Choices fandom and I absolutely live for their work, okay? And I'm not just saying because I received this UNIT of an art piece from them for Trys and Nora - like I'm still in just awe. I'm also such a fan of the fact that their work is just really soft (if I can describe it that way) to look at - like I'm a sucker for soft colour palettes, okay? I saw the lovely @aallotarenunelma share a post like this for @choicesfandomappreciation and decided to participate, since these questions have been on my mind a lot this new year!
What are you looking forward to in 2024?
As far as Choices goes, I'm not particularly looking forward to anything that much. I have around 2000 diamonds saved, though, so I'm considering giving a chance to some books I've never played (like ATV, TE book 2 since I only played book 1). I also look forward to seeing the art and writing my friends inside and outside of the fandom produce and supporting them in their work!
Do you have any creative goals for yourself in 2024?
Oh boy, do I ever.
My big goal is to get a literary agent and take steps toward traditional publication. I have two novels at the ready. One is the first book of an epic fantasy series, The Murza Chronicles Book 1: Wayward Curse, and the other is a young adult contemporary novel focused on themes of family, mental health, and hope, called An Imperfect Ballad. I'm signed up to take a four-week virtual course on querying, and then I am going to prepare query packages for both novels, have those edited by professionals, and then start submitting to agents! I really hope that by the end of the year, I will have representation and be on my way to publication. (By the way, if anyone is interested in reading either one of my original novels, feel free to message me! I'm always looking for more feedback on my novels)
As far as creative works, I have a few goals:
Finish outlining the second book in the aforementioned fantasy series, and maybe even finish the drafting process! Its title is The Murza Chronicles Book 2: The Lost Rituals.
Finish the second half of Ace of Hearts, another young adult contemporary novel about an asexual hopeless romantic teenager, that I wrote the first half of during NaNoWriMo. After finishing, I hope I will be able to get started on the editing process and send the book out to some beta readers as well.
Plan and write the first draft of the script for a super secret horror visual novel that's in the works with a small team of people I worked with on ILW 🤫
With all this going on, I may also find some time to squeeze in some fics for the It Lives Series... we shall have to see ;)

to probably no one's surprise... @gutsfics and @jeremykau made this year so special for me!! i've been in many fandoms over the years, but i've never had fandom friends like y'all. i'm so happy for our friendship and our little group chat where we can talk about the randomest wildest shit lol. i love being able to talk about Choices with y'all ofc but also just other random things going on in our lives!! i am seriously so very happy we became close friends this year and am so thankful to have people i can talk to like y'all!! i hope you both have a great new year and i hope we can meet in person some day (damn oceans 😭😭)

New Year Countdown: Dec 18
Every AU collection needs a coffeeshop AU, doesn't it? :D Have some Winteriron featuring barista!Tony and a rather flustered Bucky.
Dec 18 - Winteriron - Coffeeshop AU - Candycane
The instant Bucky glimpsed a dark fluff of hair behind the register, he jerked back from the coffeeshop door and plastered himself against the brick exterior wall.
Steve, who’d already reached for the door handle, paused and then stepped back. “Buck?”
“I can’t go in there!” Bucky gasped. “He’s working!”
“Ohhh, so I might actually get a chance to see this mysterious object of your fantasies?” Steve leaned to peer through the window, trying to get a glimpse.
“Steve!” Bucky yanked him back. “Don’t be so fucking obvious, oh my god!”
“Let’s go, I need coffee and I want to meet this guy!” Steve grabbed Bucky’s jacket and dragged him into the store by main force.
Bucky scrambled to act casual as Steve opened the door and the shop bell rang. Luckily, there was a bit of a line, so Tony didn’t spot him right away. He had a few seconds to shake off Steve’s hold and run his fingers through his hair.
Then he looked at Tony and nearly combusted on the spot. Tony was wearing a skin-tight white tee under his red barista’s apron, the fabric clinging to shoulders and arms that were clearly not the result of slinging coffee. There was some kind of ridiculous holiday-themed hair clip tucked into his curls, his eyes were bright and shining, and he was sucking on a candy cane.
He was sucking on the candy cane hard, keeping it in his mouth as he used his hands to scrawl an order on the side of a coffee cup and then rang up the order. The end of the cane wiggled a little bit as Tony’s mouth and tongue moved, and Bucky watched in helpless fascination.
And then the customer in front of them moved and they were standing at the counter. Bucky didn’t think it was just his imagination that Tony’s smile got even brighter.
Tony pulled the candy cane from his mouth and whirled it around one finger as he said, “Hey, it’s my favorite snowflake! And you brought a friend!” He made a show of examining Steve. “Or is it a date?”
“I. No. He. I. That--” Bucky stammered.
“No, not a date,” Steve said. Thank god for Steve.
Then Steve continued, “Of the two of us, I think Bucky would rather date you.” Oh god, Steve sucked.
Bucky could feel his face flaming as he tried to stamp on Steve’s foot. “Christ’s cup, Steve, ain’t you got even a little bit of manners? You can’t just chat someone up when they’re working!”
“I wasn’t chatting him up,” Steve pointed out, nimbly dodging Bucky’s stamping. “I was just saying--”
“Please ignore him,” Bucky pleaded Tony. “He got punched in the head one too many times.”
Tony was laughing, and it was the most musical thing Bucky had ever heard. “Well, now I don’t feel so bad,” he said.
“I, what?”
Tony winked at him. “I’ve been using all my best moves on you, hot stuff, and you haven’t bitten even once. But if it’s a matter of being polite...” He reached over and grabbed the back of the other barista’s shirt, dragging her over to the register.
“Tony!” she squawked, then glanced at Bucky and sighed. “Fine, just this once.” She smiled smoothly at Steve. “Can I take your order, sir?”
Tony pulled the apron off his head and flung it toward a rack of hooks. It missed, but Tony ignored it, ducking around the end of the bar. Two long strides brought him right to Bucky’s side. “I’m on break now,” he said pointedly. “Not working at all.” And then he deliberately licked the length of the candy cane before sticking it back into his mouth and raising his eyebrows at Bucky, expectant.
Bucky’s mouth opened. Closed. “Uh.”
Steve and the other barista were both leaning on the counter, not doing a very good job of suppressing their laughter.
Jerks.
“Would you like?” Bucky tried. Wait, that was incomplete. “To go out?” Better.
Tony grinned around the candy cane. “With you?”
Bucky’s blush wasn’t going to be going away anytime soon, clearly. “Uh. Yes. Please.”
“I’d love to!” Tony chirped, and took another lick of his candy cane. “I’m off work at four, pick me up here?”
“Cane-- I mean, can do,” Bucky managed.

Okay yes, 2024 is here, I am so late to this, but I hope I'm not too late to this! Anyway, 3 writers.. Once again, it kind of sucks to choose only 3, so I'm going to break seventeen laws once again. @choicesfandomappreciation
Arguably yes, I have to catch up with some of your guys's wonderful writing and I will! That's a resolution lol, I promise. 2024, year of reading - let's do it.
@jerzwriter : I'll never stop talking about Elsa's writing because it reads like how you'd expect a movie script to sound like. It's full of realistic scenarios, quippy witty dialogues (did I mention she's like, so freaking amazing with dialogues??) and the way she portrays a scene with just interactions between characters is nothing short of an actual masterclass in writing. Seriously, where can I buy some of it? Everything she puts out is so down-to-earth and it feels like a warm comforting hug - like doesn't matter if there's shit out there, let's talk about characters doing their little thingies, even if it is as simple as a coffee run. @peonierose : Peonie's writing is so wholesome, like it's like condensed hot chocolate. I'd say the one thing I love about her writing (if I had to pick *one*), it would be how she deals with a cast of characters. They all have their own unique traits, how they deal with everyday problems, their relationship with other characters- especially Luna's cousins. You find a part of yourself in her writing. Also can I just say I'm a sucker for the 'found family' trope? Peonie depicts them so well! Bryce, Luna, Soraya, Skyler, Evie, Keiki being super supportive of each other is just everything to me. @lilyoffandoms: Lily's drabbles are to literally die for. Their stuff actually inspired me a lot to get started in writing! It's tough to depict a specific scene so astutely and with the vibes, it's almost a superpower to do the same. Their descriptions are always so magically written - it is almost a literal tutorial in how to write - especially for me, who goes off on fifteen different tangents. I love Lily's writing also because of how just downright cool the characters are- Like - Maiele? Who wouldn't want to be his friend? Gabriel? Cool is literally engraved into their DNA. Merida? She's everything, Ethan's just Ken. I love them your honour. Link to masterlist.
@moominofthevalley: Okay, I admire a lot about her work but if I had to pick one for me, it would be her descriptions and just 'painting' this scene. Emily's inner monologue is honestly something we should've definitely had in canon and Moomin does this in this way that sheds some much needed light into how grief, loss, pain, love and so many others feel like. It's always an uphill climb to do so, it's an even tougher feat to fold it into parts of larger works and she does it ever so brilliantly, it gives me a literal whiplash lol (affectionate). One minute I'm like "Beat him up, Emily! Get his ass!" and the next second I'm bawling like a baby. I love their portrayal of Trystan too, it's such a delight everytime I read them both! And I'm def looking forward to what you have planned for 2024! Link to masterlist
@mydemonsdrivealimo: MJ's writing is so brilliant because it's just painfully real. The characters are brought to life with how well-rounded they are. Jensen's own strengths can come back to bite him in the back. They're ultimately people and MJ does this so effortlessly well that it is almost as if I'm reading a biography of them in action. Jensen's story is one of my absolute favs and how MJ tackles a lot of different themes such as Jensen's heritage, the whole what's-the-deal-with-hospitals-anyway, neurodivergence, old friendships coming back to life - it is just so so easy to relate to or be able to share some of that perspective. Writers whose works I'm looking forward to reading this year:
@storyofmychoices: Especially Mal's Orphanage series! I've come across Dani's writing only in passing but I'd love to get to know their characters better. Especially Daenarya. The Blades hyperfixation hasn't left my body lmao. Plus Olivia and Bryce are such a delight whenever they appear on my dash, and I'd love to learn more about them! Link to masterlist
@starlight-starfury: Ever since the WIP Wednesday snippet, the Elhalas series has just put me in a chokehold. I have definitely come across some of their works before - the writing style has me sitting down with a pot of tea ready, but I'm yet to really be able to sink my teeth in - y'know? Tyril was one of my favourite characters back in Blades #1 and I'd love to revisit my old hyperfixation through Tyril and Raine again! Link to masterlist
@stars-are-within-me: Stars is such a positive force in this fandom, plus I am obsessed with their Trystan and Carina and especially their Trystan-centric fics because it's high time Trys gets their own story to tell. I'm also like super eager to check out their Blades fics too. I'm such a sucker for character-centric stories where their pasts are explored or they're confronted with a problem only they can solve. @a-cloud-for-dreams: As a fellow South Indian, to see a South Asian!MC fills me with a ton of joy. (I definitely did not do a lot of stalking, no of course not). I'm so looking forward to reading more about Chandini and Bryce. Even Haeyln! And I'm def looking forward to checking out the College!AU series you're working on as well (being an ardent fan of young adult lit). Link to masterlist
@trappedinfanfiction: Fast Break has to be a fandom classic, right? Like c'mon. Celia is such an icon, I hate myself for missing out on so much of her story. In addition to that, I'm def looking forward to more Sofia and Trystan; more Ran and Imtura, Avery and Eli, and generally more Blades lol. Link to masterlist
Honestly I'm yet to catch up with so many other writers and their works - I probably sound like a broken record, but maan, life do be hard for real. But I hope this year isn't going to be as stupidly congested as 2023. If I have missed any writers, I am so sorry lol, I am writing this on three hours of sleep, the words might as well float around me but enough ramblings ha.
I hope you have a great 2024. I hope you get to write so much, create a lot of art, work on tons of different projects, don't ever suffer from writer's block and have enough time to do everything. I hope you have all the inspirations you'll ever need, harness all of that awesome energy and hope the days to come are kinder, are less taxing and are much more hopeful. Happy New Year, everyone!
