I think the reason that the lack of multi-dimensional relationships within the party, and for Tav, is eating away at me so much recently is because it’s significantly affecting BG3’s replayableness for me. It’s a huge game, and I’m ever guilty of taking a completionist approach. Now, there are many branching narratives in BG3 which means there’s endless new content to explore by taking different approaches. Personally though, that’s not quite enough of a reason for me to want to keep revisiting a story. I don’t feel compelled to replay hundreds of hours worth of content just to see what happens to Sazza if you rescue her in Act 1 instead of leaving her in the cage. But if I’m invested in a story and the characters in it- I will replay a game 10,000 times just to rewatch my oc become ride or die besties and trauma bond with their companion. Thinking of Liara’s relationship with an unromanced Sheperd in ME3. Tali declaring herself Tali’zorah vas Normandy?? Gut wrenching. Garrus taking you out on a friend date and making fun of your go to catch phrase in the process? Iconic. Varric writing Cassandra a book to bury the hatchet between them? Unforgettable. Solas and Varric co-parenting a kid together? Can’t get enough of it. Those are the interactions that keep me coming back to replay a game over and over again. Seeing the effect my character has on the lives of their friends, and the effect their friends has on them. Absolutely, I adore the romance aspects of these kinds of rpg’s. It is also a reason I will replay a game. But I don’t want to replay a game as massive as BG3 if the only real significant connection my character develops during it is with their love interest. There’s too many hours that have to be invested to just be playing for a couple of scenes with their boo.
Same goes for trying different romances! If I want to try out the game taking a different approach, and exploring a different character’s romance- I’m dedicating a significant amount of time just to get a handful of scenes over the course of the entire game that focus on an emotional connection for my character. If replaying the game with a different oc meant that I could explore their friend dynamics differently as well? Heck yeah. But as it stands, it just feels like you pick your romance option and then have to stand awkwardly while you’re surrounded by acquaintances who want to bang you.

Halsin and Minthara weren't always mutually exclusive
Tumblr media
Even though you can recruit both of them, in the game it looks like a funny bug. I guess this is what's left of the original idea. It was previously planned not only letting you have them at the same time, but also that they would interact in the party like other companions.
In the audio files, you can find lines of their reactions to each other's deaths. I don't know if these are triggered or not. They are both so bugged that sometimes I can hardly tell which is the cut content and which is the bug.
It's kind of funny that Halsin would be so sad.
I recently completed Halsin's quest with Mintara in my party. In the scene by the lake, when Halsin entered the portal, Minthara said "He made it. Now let's just hope he survives what's on the other side"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually this is exactly the same line as Tav's.
Halsin also share many lines with Tav and other origins. Most of them are unused. But in this case the line is not only voiced by Emma Gregory (Minthara's VA), it's triggered.
There is another interesting line. In Moonrise Towers, when Ketheric punishes Mintara for a failure in the grove and sends her to the dungeon, the player can choose not to interfere and leave the location without helping her. In this case one of the characters in your party will remind you that she can be saved as a potential companion. I was wondering if Halsin would say anything. And he did. "Minthara may prove useful to us, should we wish to save her…"
This isn't cut content. This isn't new content added with patches. It's in the game since the release. And this line works. Moreover, this is his personal line.
Tumblr media
If they implement the dialogue with an ultimatum it will be nonsense. I mean, first he suggests to save her from the Absolute as a useful ally, and then in the camp he will say that it's the right choice to kick her back under the Absolute control. It's even hard to blame the character for such contradiction. Rather, it's just a stupid limit set by the script.
Next. In Act 3 if you make one of them to go up on the clown stage, the other one will approve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also an unused flag for Act 3 in the game files with the description "Orin pretended to kill Halsin during the Minthara abduction campnight." Which means in Act 3 they were both in the party.
Tumblr media
You can see what the abduction of Mintara looks like in this video. Only instead of Halsin, Jaheira is mentioned here.
youtube
Maybe there are other confirmations that I do not know about, that they were not mutually exclusive before. But that's enough for me.
They were both not originally planned as companions. Their roles were expanded much later. Most likely, Larian didn't have time to polish their content, so scissors were used. This is why their content seems so unfinished compared to others. Except for Wyll, probably. That's why they are so buggy.
I suppose the reason they are both mutually exclusive is because it is the easiest solution when you have a deadline on the horizon. Just easiest as "it's fine for a companion to just hang out at the camp". Otherwise, you need dialogs, animations, scripts, etc. And you also need to make sure that it will work with everything else. This is time and resources. But this doesn't mean that it's impossible to fix anything later.
I faintly hope that the defenetive edition will have the option to recruit them both.
And I really hope that in the future Larian will look at the games of their colleagues from BioWare (who made the original BG). I mean games from better times than now. The companions below will show you how much they "loved" each other. Not all of them became friends in the end. But nevertheless, we saved the world. Together.

After watching the VA’s playing DnD…. I think we need more stuff about the gang coming together to save a Distressed Tav ngl
So a great example of this style of quest/storyline is in Dragon Age Origins and I would have LOVED to see BG3 do something similar!!!
Two opportunities in game I can Identify immediately where this would have worked well would be
1) When priestess Gut talks to you in her room, Tav could potentially get stolen or jailed and need to be recovered
2) ORIN SHOULD'VE KIDNAPPED TAV and not a companion
Lots more potentials all throughout the game for sure, plus could be added in as it's own thing.
How they did it in DA:O was beautiful. You got to play as your party members minus the MC, and they had to try to convince their way into a stronghold to get to the cell where MC was being held. It had hilarious dialogue options that changed based on which party member(s) you brought with you
And it also showed us, the viewer/player, a glimpse of how the party members/companions would act "unsupervised" and forced into leadership roles they are otherwise un-used to bc the MC is usually running the show. So they have to work together without direction
It really helps to solidify the main character/player character as a member of the group as well, because otherwise we don't really get to see the gang talking *about us*, it's almost always us talking to them one on one when we click on them in camp
Anyway tldr I agree

Hey, Fey!!
I hope you're taking care of yourself with the holidays coming up 🧡🖤
We obviously see a lot of your art and love for BG3, but I was wondering if you have any Tavs/Durges that you love? (As in your own characters!)
Or who is your favorite NPC/NPC interaction outside of the companions? 🥰
Lots of love from Ellie!
Hi there!! Thank you, doing alright!! You too!! I have 1 Tav, named Iiyola! She's in the portrait I painted for my icon. A draconic sorcerer with a few points in rogue. She's shown up in a few of my pieces, and I have like 100k words into a fanfic I may never post about her being childhood friends with Astarion. Halsin is her uncle- she's half Drow half Wood Elf which is a source of great inner turmoil for her spiritually. I'm a huge Frogotten Realms elf nerd so my fanfic about her only has Astarion, Halsin, Minthara, and Shadowheart from the game, and it's exploring each of their relationships with their culture and navigating life as elves who have very different opinions on what that means. And, Iiyola kind of bridging that gap in the party as she really belongs nowhere, not Drow enough for their society, but also too "tainted" to belong in Seldarine elf society. (I personally think that the new D&D lore kind of scoured the intrigue from elf politics so I am writing with more of a Neverwinter Nights/BG1&2 approach.) She's a Vhaeraun worshiper, as her father was a high up cleric within their order, it's a whole thing and I'm rambling now! Her faith is tested when she learns that Halsin is her uncle (to his surprise as well) and she learns some ugly things about her father that really flip her world more upside-down than it already is! I only make 1 PC for RPGs and that's it (99% of the time), so I've remade Iiyola for my Durge run. I never play evil in RPGs so I'll be doing a resist run for sure. As far as outside NPCs, I'm not really sure, I do like Gortash a lot. I do think that, unfortunately, both he and Orin seem to have been shafted a bit in the plot pacing. I was so excited to get to see Baldur's Gate again and I was kind of bummed out the upper city was kind of a letdown. I wish I could say Viconia but I really dislike that canon had to be forced on us, because I LOVED Viconia in 1&2 and the canon one just isn't my Viconia. Also wish they'd brought her original VA back and given her her goddamn beauty mark!!!!!!!!!
Kind of a ranty tangent but I also think it's a shame we didn't get to see as many noble houses- I would have liked to have seen Cazador's place actually be a manor, visit Gortash's estate, etc. I loved breaking into noble's houses in the first game. :( I think it's a dreadful missed opportunity that we did not get some kind of super important ball/masquerade/social event a la DA: Inquisition where we get to dance with our LI and do some intrigue that inevitably ends in crazy bloodshed and a battle with limited gear... Oh I am rambling again.
Overall I think the NPCs are all pretty compelling, probably my favorite little nest of NPCs was the Myconid 'village'.
thank you for asking and sorry for rambling!!!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this re: the Wyll feedback post but I imagine the main issue with using his old EA dialogue assets is that the majority of them are from when they still had Wyll's old VA who couldn't come back for the rework. So it's not like they could just pull it out and plop it back in like they could with someone like...Karlach who was also completed late in EA, but was always Samantha Beart.
Yeah the existing script might work, but actually adding it back to the game it would still involve Theo having to come in and record the majority of them as the Wyll we now know. And assuming he's not going to perfectly mimic the original reading just in his voice, the devs would need to adjust the animations so they fit Theo's reading of it. And imo, at that point you might as well just make new dialogue/animations to best suit his current form rather than trying to build off of what's leftover from before.
I think it's a matter of - "this should've been done in the first place" - considering we have stuff like the Wyll/Lae'zel flirt banter that was also in Early Access. Theo Solomon re-recorded those lines for full release, only for Larian to remove it later. (Presumably because it doesn't fit his current romance route, but I digress.)
A lot of his EA dialogue still carried over to release, which means lines were deliberately picked to be re-recorded. However, this work seems inconsistent because we still have aspects of EA Wyll that are in release.
A glaring example of this is Wyll approving of Sazza getting executed. This was left over from when he still had a grudge on goblins in Early Access; now, he doesn't. Why would current Wyll approve of a defenseless prisoner getting killed?
My point with taking lines from EA Wyll for current Wyll is that there are lines that still fit him. Current Wyll has funny lines - but those lines are locked behind specific trigger conditions that aren't always easily encountered. Like his line: "It's like I always sometimes say..." - that line is only triggered if 1) the ogres in Act 1 are dead, 2) the player has Lump's War Horn, 3) Wyll specifically tries to blow the horn (which would be unlikely unless the player is doing a Wyll origin, or they had companion Wyll do it - more likely, it's a Tav/Durge doing this action.)
EA Wyll, on the other hand, had his funny lines in his regular dialogue ("spill the whole jug", "there's a saying I just made up"). In this case, are the funny lines that current Wyll have supposed to be there? If they are, why did they remove his other funny lines from Early Access, especially if it still fits his current character?
More to the point, are there still lines from current Wyll that aren't supposed to be there? How much effort was actually put into rewriting his character if there's still stuff from Early Access that don't fit him now (ie, the Sazza approval)?
In the end, I agree that we're probably better off to have brand new written stuff for Wyll, but I can't ignore the sloppy work that was done in rewriting him if he still has apparently leftover dialogue from EA that may be in danger of getting removed. And if they can't even do this properly, it doesn't bode well for any new content for Wyll.
As an aside: I think Karlach's VA wasn't always Samantha Beart, at least in the first few versions of it. She also did not look the same way she does now.

can i ask what happened on twitter? i'm sorry BG3 twit is so insane but there are a lot of active folks here on tumblr that are much nicer imo. hope you can find a new place here and we stan all minthara lovers. queen shit. 🙏❤️
i’d say “long story short” but there’s 0 ways i can make this short there’s just SO much 😭
basically those datamined lines with halsin and minthara were found, where halsin refuses to work with minthara and makes tav choose between them even though minthara is begging for shelter from the absolute, and minthara lovers were like ‘ew wtf halsin fuck him she’s a victim of the absolute.’
we were in our own corner on our own tweets with our mututls ranting about these lines, and some halsin fans decided to come onto our tweets and talk about how they want minthara dead dead and the ways they’d kill her and stuff like that. which, to be honest, is completely unwarranted and a dick move. they were told to basically fuck off and that’s where shit hit the fan.
i won’t name names, but someone made a thread about how halsin wasn’t in the wrong at all because minthara was his abuser (which she wasn’t, she did nothing to him, it was the goblins, and she hardly knows who he is.) i think some people corrected them but i can’t remember? anyway, we made our own tweets like “minthara isn’t halsin’s abuser btw.”
person who made that thread proceeded to say that people who dislike halsin are queerphobic…
some of us tweeted about not throwing around words like abuse, abuser, and queerphobia and to not water them down. i made my own tweet too.
and then they said that we think ‘lesbians are the only “good” members of the community’ and that ‘supporting gay, bi, or trans members is oppressing lesbians.’ which is incredibly thoughtless and stupid of them to say considering queer history and how many lesbians are trans, considering how many of my minthara mutuals on twitter fall under the trans umbrella.
the lesbophobia got called out, rightfully.
i then said that i’m uncomfortable with the way halsin’s va interacts with the nsfw stuff in the fandom and it kinda gives me the creeps. yknow, on my own tweet, on my own account, not a single halsin account in sight. and since i’m a lesbian (and my personal history) it seems pretty normal to me to be uncomfortable with men being all nsfw like that’s not my scene thx. anyway, their little group found it and said i was targeting his ga and bring him into the drama (which i really wasn’t i was expressing personal feelings on my own account but aight.)
cue the ‘supporting halsin is anti-lesbian.’ and ‘if you like halsin you’re being “creepy” because all male sexuality is creepy to them, and halsin’s va, dave, supporting halsin’s sexuality obviously pisses them off.’ which is a wild thing to say. we never brought dave into it, it was them that did that. my tweet had nothing to do with the drama they kept making go on by not shutting up about it. by this point minthara lovers were back to normal tweeting and only reacting to whatever of those drama tweets showed up on the timeline.
oh! and here comes the inevitable: we all got called terfs. most of us fall somewhere under the trans umbrella. i’m agender myself. but we’re terfs to that person apparently. lesbians always get called terfs, no matter what.
i’m sure there’s more insane shit they’ve said in private.
all of that just because we got pissy at halsin sending minthara to a fate worse than death when none of what she did in act 1 was of her own free will.

I saw some discussion about Shadowheart's path, if Tav/Your character is dead when she confronts the Nightsong she will kill her 100% of the time. Saying that this is her "true" path and what she wants, how she only stops due to your presence. The DJ end is her "best" end due to her being confident and fulfilled, how she is actual quite an evil character due to torture etc. How it fits the lore better
All I can politely say is that I'm glad I isolate myself from most fandom spaces for this game, because this is a doozy.
She has to be memory wiped so many times because of how often she drifts back to questioning Sharran teachings and just being Very Bad at it. So I don't really buy "100%" of the time, but that's also because I personally believe nobody has absolute certainty in their morals and faith that certain situations wouldn't test.
There's kind of a whole section about that in the Shadowfell.
I don't even want to touch the Tav/PC comment. That's a barrel of worms that isn't worth opening.
For some folks, I think they just want something against the grain or not "typical" and so they naturally gravitate towards things like the Dark Justiciar ending. It's a different kind of wish fulfillment fantasy for them.
"I can make her worse" and all that. I don't think the reason people like that ending is because it's good for her lmao.
Long ramble while I'm on break ahead.
That said, a lot of people need to relearn critical thinking and practice emotional skills. Or they need to watch the full story side-by-side on both paths, because some of this shit is so blatant it's fascinating how some folks miss it.
I think assuming the A -> B -> C of "oh, she's a Sharran so she would strive to become a Dark Justiciar, there is no alternative character explanation for/against that" is a simple-minded approach.
It also, in my opinion, restricts people into very fundamentalist-adjacent viewpoints and thoughts. If someone was made to believe without a shadow of a doubt that they were born X way, or behaved Y way for Z years, then they must be that person forever and always. No, it doesn't work like that lol.
There's also no true path in this game until/if there's a sequel, because there's too many paths the characters can take. I use a lot of "I" statements and say "this is a theory/extratextual" in my opinions for that reason.
Aside #1: It's also why I take a lot of umbrage with anyone that says there's canon ships, or that there's ships that "obviously would happen." Maybe? Maybe not? It's just silly and far too self-restricting for no good reason. I get if you just want to ship one thing, but you don't have to justify it lol. Enjoy what you enjoy, but don't try to strongarm it into "canon" that doesn't really exist.
And saying it's "what she wants" and that she is confident and fulfilled is a load of shit lmao.
You (the royal you, not you, anon) have to have negative reading comprehension to put Shadowheart down that path and be like, "yeah, she loves this." It's so typical of an abuse victim to try and appease her abuser, and the Dark Justiciar route is her indulging in that. But to hear her lines in the romance afterwards, about how she can't really love the PC, combined with how she has to deal with her parents and how she retreats from being open about herself to being cold and distant once more...?
To say it's "right" for her is absolutely wild, and I despise the thought that there can't be happy endings or we can't want her to have a happy ending. I love fucked up stories with miserable endings, but I also love warm stories with joy and love and redemption at the end of it all.
It's also a massively surface-level read to say it's anything she wants. Sometimes people push themselves down paths they don't know how to retreat from, and the ends are often horrifying.
Aside #2: It's the same as if you cheat on her with Mizora. Like, she might be OK with relationships that are non-monogamous (if the player is) but the way the VA and writing and mocap combined in that scene make it painfully obvious that she is just trying to appease you to keep the relationship intact. Supremely typical abused person behavior, but now the PC is the abuser instead. Seeing people comment that she's OK with the Mizora situation is head-on-backwards level misreading.
She has done evil deeds in her past, sure. I think if you blanket claim she cannot be redeemed, you're going into some wild territory at the logical conclusion of that one. Her circumstances also alter how we interpret her past as well, and I think it intersects with my belief that compassion is a learned skill that not everyone cultivates.
Not to mention that everyone in the BG3 cast can be turned "evil" or at least made to do dark shit. "One True Way" types will never understand that there is a multitude of experiences, and it translates to this game as well.
And finally.
The lore?
Lol. Lmao even.
We know who the "real" Shadowheart is, but in some universes she destroys that person in order to foolishly seek approval from her abuser/goddess. In others, in mine for example, she abandons that goddess to embrace the person she's been forced to hide.
So yeah, my ultimate response to "Dark Justiciar Shadowheart is the real Shadowheart" is a big, wet fart noise.

Two things that makes BG3 characters so real and memorable: 1) voice acting and 2) motion captured facial expressions and body language.
Which is precisely it makes so hard for me to process my Tav’s Generic Voice #2 and mismatched / generic facial expressions.
I know it couldn’t have been done any other way, it’s not a complaint. It’s just so contrasting to other characters and showcases how important VA / motion capture is.

5 songs, 4 outfits: Celasha Xalanthyrr
I was tagged by @lolthslover (thanks again!), so here's my Tav-to-be who's also my character from my very first DnD campaign. Meet Celasha, who has gone all the way from level 1 to 20 (and recently feebleminded Tiamat herself)! (I don't know who to tag, but anyone who sees this and wishes to do this for an OC, be my guest!)
Tumblr media
Celasha is a noble drow, hailing from the [homebrew] city of Alaundryn that she might or not have partially flooded at one point. (It was totally an accident! Long story!) She's a bard (College of Glamour).
Exiled from her home, she is initially deeply suspicious of everything on the surface, slow to trust and terrified of betrayal and wild water. Over the course of her adventures, she slowly heals and overcomes her fears. She masters fey magic and learns to control water, and realizes the surface has amazing sweets to offer. Celasha has accompanied me for almost four years in our campaign (and will do so a little longer as my next Tav) and helped me through rough times of writer's block, so I might talk a little more about her in some of the games I've been tagged in, because I need to come to term with the fact that we're about to wrap up the campaign. (I'll miss her!) 💜
Songs
1. I Let The Music Speak (ABBA) I'm hearing images, I'm seeing songs No poet has ever painted Voices call out to me, straight to my heart So strange yet we're so well acquainted I let the music speak, with no restraints 2. Contra Todo (iLe) Con el coraje de frente | Voy a ganar la batalla Hecha de viento y de playa | Soy la ola que va a romper 3. Surface Pressure (Jessica Darrow/Encanto) I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service 4.
Outfits
Now that part was harder! As a noble drow, Celasha values fine and elegant clothing, but will settle for something more simple when adventuring. (However, she's fond of keeping her attire always clean by excessive use of Prestidigitation, and she does the same for her companions ... travelling with surfacers is bad enough, no need to be seen with dirty surfacers!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: This was one of her early looks I made in Hero Forge: a simple leather armor (purple, of course, the amethyst is her family's insignia stone), her beloved lute, her list of favors and faerie fire.

I had my first wild Orin encounter. She scares me, honestly, heebie-jeebies all over and I'm certain she'd be delighted to know that. To think Maggie Robertson would be scaring me again in a completely different game.
And speaking of things that scare me, I hate clowns, they freak me out. Wouldn't touch the creepy buggers with a fifty-foot pole. So, for now, I will leave the circus be. I'll probably go there once I settle everything else in the area. (So I can mentally prepare lol.)
We were sooo right about Toy Guy. His basement was a pain and if he wasn't suspicious already, all the traps down there sure set off a few red flags. The gold was worth it though. I heard there's better clothes and dyes in the city so I'm saving up to spoil Astarion. XD
Also, just to let you know, I think this update will likely be either the last or second-to-last one for a while because I'll be moving soon so I won't have time to play. I won't be moving too far from my current home so maybe it won't be a long process but with how big of a procrastinator I am I wouldn't bank on it being a short one.
Oh god yeah, Orin is one freaky mofo. I appreciate the passion though, even if it's completely deranged. The VA killed it. metaphorically, and perhaps literally.
I hate clowns too, but I didn't mind this one so much. You don't have to deal with him for long AND you get to murder him. Twas a lovely time, over all.
I want that peacock coat for Astarion SO BAD. He deserves it! I want to wrap him up in finery and then pull on his hair a little. I've been working on a fic with him and my Tav, but I've forgotten the order of certain things in Act 1 & 2, so i might like...do a solo speed run to try and get things together for fic purposes. ^^;
Aw, well, feel free to pop in anytime, doesn't have to be about bg3! We're pals now, yeah? So feel free to stop by and update me in general, I love hearing from you. Moving is such a pain, even if it's quick. I always get super stressed during moving, though the most recent move i only cried ONCE. Progress! XD So I'll be thinking of you and sending you good moving vibes :)

Look at good as Astarion looks I'm sorry but no. He's not supposed to look that old he's was an elf at age 39 he'd still have his baby face and look Like a 20 Yr old lol.
He isn't supposed to look Halsins age who's a bit closer to looking the right age there about especially since Astarion is supposed to be elf 39 Halsin is over 250
Elves live at least to 750 and the aging slows down around age 20 but it's fin to look past since I'm pretty sure they based hi look on Neil his va.
Anyway all that's at most slightly annoying mostly from people who know nothing about dnd and get mad when people point it out lol, honestly it they made it so he was at least around Halsins age when taken it would nflow better, he will definitely have a history in his job as a magister and no I refuse to listen to those saying noo he was corrupt, shut up. Let him be corrupt in the past make it so he was doing simliar shit to his old backstory because that was interesting , he fucked over the gur and they jumped him and Cazador one of the vampires he was selling criminals to noticed Astarion growing far too big for his boots and turned him
Also I hate the mocap thing it's so janky a lot of the time, I'm sick of been made to watch my tav over react to almost everything also the ending kinda sucked, I spend all that time never using a tadpole and the conceqences barely ever are conceqences no matter what the game like "um actually it doesn't matter how well you did one person has to become a mindflayer" there's a sweet friendly mindflayer in the underdark, we could of done an extra quest 1for him or given him an item to protect him whilst he helps us
Give me more body options, more face options, hell the face mods are great they have a whole variety, both young and old so can play as a little old person caught up in this shit
Side side note, there should be more checks on the whole Astarion trying to jump the player at the first meeting, and give me the choice to watch my back instead of just turning my whole back on him I have 2 tavs that would of launched his ass and given him a beating for trying to jump them, 1 would take thier eyes off if him another would be like "mate, that a boar"
Not to mention his actions make no sense when you have companions with you especially more than one like her dipshit what are you expecting to happen next XD, Astarion is operating on one braincell, I know my main tav walks into traps but they know its a trap they just want the shiny
