When I brush Your Hair | Chapter 6
Jinx X Fem!Reader 🌙🦋🎀
Word count: 5.4k
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Y/n wakes up to the feeling of shuffling near the foot of the bed. At first all she sees is the top bunk and Powder's colourful charms dangling above her. She slowly lifts herself up on her elbows.
Powder is sitting with her back resting against the wall, hugging her legs close to her chest. She didn't intend to fall asleep on her, she felt a tiny bit guilty.
"Hi'." Y/n yawns and rubs the sleep and grogginess out of her eyes. The room is very quiet, no one else is there except for them.
"Morning." Powder replies. Y/n is sitting up now. She looks around the room and catches sight of the clock; checking the time, it reads 10:20 pm.
Oh dang. She didn't expect to have slept for that long. When did she fall asleep anyway? She guesses the chaos of the past couple of days could be a contributing factor to her unusual exhaustion.
She's a second away from speaking up when the basement door bursts open and in comes Mylo with Claggor trailing behind.
"Powder, what's up with your sister?" He asks loudly, sounding more annoyed than he usually does. His face is screwed up into a scowl as he walks over and plops down onto the couch. Claggor only sighs quietly and sits down beside him, anxiously rubbing the back of his neck.
Y/n frowns at them, her heart still calming down from the sudden spook. She looks back at Powder who stares at the floor and then shrugs.
"How would I know?"
"She tells you everything. She just left us in the dark acting all mysterious!" Mylo flails his arms as his frustration grows. Now Y/n is growing confused. What happened when she was asleep?
Powder closes her eyes and sighs. She opens them and looks up at Y/n. "Can we go upstairs?"
The smaller girl's gaze flickers from one blue eye to the other before nodding her head and getting to her feet. Powder grabs the stuffed bunny she had a while ago and stands up to meet her friend's side.
When the basement door is closed behind her Y/n turns around and looks Powder straight in the eyes. "What happened?"
The blue haired girl furrows her eyebrows. "What are you talking about?"
"Whatever happened while I was asleep or something... Did Vi leave?" Y/n looks down for a moment when her hands start to fidget.
"Oh." Powder's shoulders sag. "Yeah.. I didn't get to talk to her though because the others followed her out."
There's silence where Y/n's face slightly twists into an undecipherable expression. Her stomach is uncomfortably twisting in anxiety; Vi did something bad but she doesn't know what. She links her arm around Powder's and the two walk up the steps leading to the bar.
The bar is completely empty. It's just Vander, whipping down freshly cleaned glasses when the two girls sit down at the counter. Y/n rests her chin on the hard surface, her friend beside her lays her head on her arm while she stares dejectedly at the bunny.
A song is playing quietly on the jukebox, one that she's heard and danced to many times but now pays no mind to. Vander smiles warmly at the two girls and places their cups in front of them filled with their favourite juice and straws.
Powder only lets her hand drop to her lap not bothering to look up. The other girl attempts a small smile, lifting herself up and taking a sip.
Vander frowns slightly, noticing both of their gloomy moods. The two girls don't notice it, but his eyes land on the stuffed bunny and his expression turns serious. He knows Violet like the back of his hand; if this was all she left them after storming out then she no doubt made some sort of plan or is being the hero. Or both.
"I have to step out for a moment. I'll be back." Vander's soft voice catches the attention of the two girls. He smiles and nods stiffly and hastily leaves the room through the front doors.
Y/n who was watching him turns her head back forward and takes another sip through her straw.
"I don't like today." She states, shoulders tense and face frowning. She feels like she's urning into a ball of anxiety. Powder straightens her back and drinks from her own straw, looking over at her shaky friend.
"Me neither." She mumbles, arms folded on the counter. She didn't notice until now, but a song is playing on the jukebox. One that they used to sing and dance to. At first she's hesitant; she isn't sure if Y/n or even herself is up for it, but then she thinks why the heck not.
She hops off the stool and trots over to the jukebox, turning up the music just a little bit higher. Spinning around she sees Y/n look at her with a puzzled expression, and then a look of realization and a smile light up her face. The girl hops off her own stool and rushes over to meet Powder.
Soon enough the room is filled with laughs and giggles. They spin and dance, standing on tables, eyes crinkled from smiling so hard and limbs having a mind of their own as they belt out the lyrics that they're surely messing up. Any worry or concern is flown out of the window, this moment now being a temporary safe haven where they can be regular little kids running around having all of the fun in the world.
The song was half way done when they started so the moment is short lived, but to them it feels like it lasts infinity.
-
"Well, if the Enforcers hit tonight we'll be ready... I think." Mylo stands confidently with his hands on his hips, looking down at the table of weapons laid out in front of them.
Mylo and Claggor had been discussing the whole topside against under city topic for what felt like hours.
"Dibs on the bat." Claggor quips.
"No no no no, I found it!" Mylo argues.
"But I called it."
"But I found it—"
"Respect the dibs, I called it already!"
Y/n and Powder are doodling on a box. Or in Y/n's words, a dull sad box void of personality. Their hushed giggles and conversations go unnoticed in their enclosed hideout on Powder's bed. Usually they set up blanket forts whenever they hangout at Y/n's place, and it's no different here in Powder's bed with multicolored drapes shoved underneath the top bunk's mattress to shield them away from the rest of the world.
Out of the blue a loud bang disrupts the calm in the room.
The door opens and Vi is running down the stairs, skipping steps as she does. She looks out of breath and in a rush. Powder and Y/n both discard what they're doing and run up to her, almost getting caught in the sheets.
"Where's the—" The redhead starts but she's cut off by her sister barreling into her side. "Vi you're back!" Powder happily greets her sounding relieved.
"Why did you leave? Are you okay?" Y/n is buzzing with excitement, feeling just as relieved as Powder as well as curiosity about where she could've went off to. But before she can give the older girl her own hug she notices how tense and uncomfortable she looks.
Vi's expression breaks and she looks like she's going to cry. She gently pushes Powder off of her and reaches down to the table to grab the gauntlets. Mylo is faster and manages to wrap his hand around her wrist to stop her.
"Hey! Those are Vander's. Slow down. What's going on?" He asks, face now full of concern and confusion. Violet is breathing heavily, trying to contain her composure in front of everyone watching her. Her eyes shut tightly before gulping.
"Benzo's dead."
Her declaration immediately shifts the mood to a very heavy one. The air in the room suddenly feels suffocating, and as though everyone is trapped in honey to the point they can't move.
"Dead?" Claggor is the first to say something, face paling.
"They took Vander." Vi continues, though vaguely.
"Who took Vander?" Mylo asks, trying to pull more information out of her.
"I don't know, but I need to help him."
"We're going with you." Mylo states, not taking no for an answer.
"Whatever killed Benzo... was like nothing I've ever seen. It tore him apart." Violet's voice shakes, choking on her words as the tears threaten to spill from her eyes. The fear in her voice has Y/n on edge, watching the girl's hands ball up into fists while she tries not to break down. She's never seen the girl so disturbed before. She's nearly frozen in spot beside Powder, who looks just as terrified as her.
"You're not doing this alone, Vi." Claggor wraps an arm around her shoulder consolingly, Mylo stepping closer to do the same. "He's our father too."
Y/n is still standing there, shoulders so tense they're nearly up to her ears. She barely catches Powder leaving her side; looking over to watch her pack a couple of bombs into a travel box.
"Do you know where they took him?" One of the boys ask, everyone now seeming to be preparing to fight.
"Ekko followed them.." Vi is shoving things into a bag, "The old Cannery next to the docks. He said..." Violet trails off when she sees the two girls standing side by side, looking up at her. Powder looks expectantly with a small smile on her face, however Y/n seems very reluctant; shaky hands gabbing tightly onto her forearms making her appear cold.
Violet sighs, almost regretting what she's about to say. "You need to sit this one out, guys.."
"What?" Powder is taken aback, her face falls. Y/n's eyebrows raise is surprise, however she should have expected it.
"You're not coming." She repeats, walking over to them.
"I'm not afraid." Powder tries to reason. "It's too dangerous." Violet tells her, but Powder is still adamant, voice rising. "But families stick together, you said it yourself!"
"I know what I said—"
"But I'm sure we can do something!" Y/n timidly speaks up.
"I want to fight, I can help!" Powder nearly shouts.
"You're not ready." Violet's stern voice shuts the younger girls down. Powder's face, previously determined, is now riddled with betrayal. Y/n can only look down hopelessly at the her shoes, wanting to cry.
"You're all I have left.. I can't lose you." Vi whimpers, placing her hands onto the girl's shoulders and grasping them firmly, reluctant to let go. "Here." Vi then pulls out a flare hooked to her pants and places it into Y/n's hands. "If they come for you, take this and run. Where ever you are, light it up, and I'll find you. I promise." Her voice wavers in the middle of her sentence, but she's never sounded more sincere.
She gives the two girls one last squeezing hug before meeting the boys at the door, and leaving them alone in the room by themselves. Only their muffled footsteps can be heard slowly fading away. Until moments later Powder stomps over to her bed and tosses her box onto the mattress harshly.
Y/n looks down at the flare held loosely in her hands. A tear drop falls down onto the metal surface.
-
Y/n doesn't know what to feel. Her emotions are all over the place. She's been pacing the room for the past five minutes, she hasn't been able to stay still. One one hand she's scared because she has no idea what the other three are getting themselves into and they likely don't either. What if they get seriously hurt or worse? And her and Powder are left here on their own to fend for themselves? What will they do then?
On the other hand she feels angry. Even though her skills don't reach adequate she can't help but feel offended and left out. She just wants to feel useful for once. She's sure her pyrokinesis could've been a good thing to have with them, right?
She whimpers, grabbing fistfuls of her hair and sliding down to the floor in front of the couch hidden away from her friend's sight. Who she should probably be comforting right now. And she did try earlier. But Powder is evidently hard to control when having a break down. It didn't help that Y/n herself was trying not to set the whole room on fire.
Powder's cries and shouts bounce off the walls of the small living room. From her quaint spot tuckered against the wall, her chest heaves as her hands harshly pull on the thin fabric of her shirt hard enough to leave small tears from her nails.
What is she to do? She has no way of defending herself. Yes she has her bombs, but what use are they at this point? Much like Y/n, she feels helpless. But also very, very angry. Conflicted, she doesn't know if it's aimed at her sister or herself.
Y/n's throat is sore and scratchy from trying to catch her breath between sobs. She doesn't want to sit there and wait. She wants to help. There's got to be something they can do! But god her head aches and burns and her stomach is churning so much she thinks she might throw up and—
The table in front of her flickers yellow. Her head shoots up and her eyes widen like saucers.
"No, no, no!" Her arms reach out through the blazing fire, desperately trying to pat down the flames, her glossy tear filled eyes being reflected by the unwelcome light.
Breath. Breath. Breath, Y/n! She repeats to herself over and over in her head. The flames only dissipate to be just a small few, slightly controlled but still charring the table black and emanating a scorching heat.
She heaves, resting back against the front of the couch. A second later something hits the floor with a clank and Powder's hoars yell makes her flinch. She buries her face into her knees.
Her friend's temper is scaring her. She's never seen the poor girl so upset, and she's afraid anything she does or says will make her mad at her.
With tightly shut eyes and her hands covered over her ears, she croaks, "Powder."
The blue haired girl doesn't hear her at first, her wails racking the disturbed air around them. Y/n repeats herself twice, only the third time when she raises her voice to the point she sounds agonizingly desperate does the other girl freeze. Her hunched over frame and messy blue bangs hide her face.
Y/n, looking around the side of the couch from her spot on the floor, slowly gets up and takes tentative steps towards Powder.
She stops in front of her, she can see her shoulders trembling and moving with every sharp breath she takes. She wraps her shaky hand around Powder's arm and gently pulls it away from her face, where the girl had been obscuring her tear stained cheeks with her hands. And when the bluenette looks up at her, she thinks it might be the most pitiful thing she's ever seen. She looks absolutely defeated; eyes bloodshot with tears and her face pulled into a pained expression, snot running down her nose and strands of hair stuck to her forehead.
"There's- There's got to be something we can do... Right?" She whimpers out, hiccupping between words despite trying to sound strong for her friend. Powder's hands clutch the sheets so tightly her knuckles turn white. Her head shakes. "She left. She doesn't want my help. She never did."
Her breathing picks up and her voice wavers, brows frowning deeply. Y/n feels a shock of panic run down her spine. Now desperately looking around to find something, anything, that could help her or give her an idea. Her moment is cut short when Powder groans, making her whip her head around.
She's banging her fists against her head, tear drops falling down onto her legs again. The smaller girl takes a step back, face screwing up in fear. She hardly gets a chance to process how quickly the girl in front of her grabs the box beside her and throws it onto the floor.
The aggression sends Y/n falling to the floor when she tries to move out of the way, watching the box and everything inside clatter to the ground with a bright flash of blue lights. Her heart is beating hard against her chest. Out of the corner of her eye she sees Powder fall to her knees beside her, quietly sobbing in defeat.
Odd tiny orbs of light still float around the two girls, as gentle as feathers blowing around in the wind. Then Y/n remembers; those are the same blue lights from the explosion the other day. The stone she had dropped in that room... Everything was piecing together, thoughts running miles per hour as her wide eyes train on one of the stones slowly rolling towards her.
"Powder..." Y/n whispers hoping she can finally catch her attention. The bluenette wipes her eyes with her hand, head slowly lifting. The smaller girl picks up the stone peering down at it before meeting Powder's blue eyes. She can hear a sharp intake of breath come from her.
"We can help them."
-
The stars are obscured by dark gray rain clouds that had moved in overhead. Cool air nips at their skin but they ignore it. The only thing on their minds is saving their family.
They've finally made it to the big, what looks to be, abandoned building. Y/n had never seen it before it shut down, and she always wanted to go exploring inside. She never got far enough though; always caught before sneaking her way in through a window. Why there always seemed to be people around, she never knew. But now being in her predicament, she thinks she might now know the answer.
"This way." Powder beckons Y/n over. She had been leading them for most of the way there. Ever since they stepped foot onto the streets Y/n's mind has been on autopilot, traces of fear and hesitation wiped away into numbness. For now at least.
They approach a wall that appears to have had crumbled and chipped away over the decades, some wooden boards being nailed into it to cover gaping holes. And a little ways up there's an open window. It's suitable for climbing, according to Powder who begins doing just that. Y/n tentatively follows closely behind, copying what she does while being mindful not to miss a step.
Dust and tiny pieces of cement chip off and fall beneath their feet, some flakes of paint floating down to tangle into Y/n's damp hair. Their strained breaths and the distant clunk and thud can be heard in the heavy air.
"Ah!-"
A loose board under Powder's hand gave away and fell, narrowly missing Y/n's head. She looks over her shoulder to watch it fall and that's when, with a sinking stomach, she realizes just how high up they've gotten. At least fifteen feet, and they have maybe five more to go. Which thankfully isn't a lot. She gulps and looks back up.
Soon they reach the window that miraculously has a platform right below it. Powder lifts herself up onto the landing with a little struggle and then reaches her hand down so Y/n can use it for assistance. Y/n takes it and feels herself get pulled up.
Her torso lands onto the hard surface and she's forced to let out an 'oof'. Her legs wiggle in midair and she starts panicking, reaching out for her friend and pulling desperately at her clothes; anything to prevent herself from slipping. Powder grips under her armpits and pulls her towards her with all of the strength she can muster.
"Thanks." Y/n breathes out, quickly adjusting herself so she's safely sat against the wall and not too close to the edge. However it is a tight squeeze.
Powder is at the advantage of being closest to the window. She doesn't waste time to peak inside to take a gander. Y/n peaks around the corner as well, the two girls head-butting to try and get a good view. What they're met with is Vi fighting a group of men in the distance, wearing what appears to be massive metal gauntlets.
Worry washes over Y/n like a bucket poured on her head. The redhead seems to be keeping up but she looks visibly bruised fatigued. How long she's been going at it, she doesn't know.
"Uh, okay. We-we need to do something." Y/n's voice is shaky, she almost sounds out of breath. Her hands start running through her hair and playing with her strands so aggressively that she might rip them out. She's not sure when is a good time to bring out the crystals, she's scared of hurting the wrong people. Plus there's no sight of the two boys...
While her eyes are going back and fourth between Powder's box and the fight, she catches sight of a man who looks like he's growing in size. The same man who had stopped her and the others on their way back from Piltover that day.
His veins glow a bright toxic purple and he makes high pitched screeches that sound otherworldly as his bones and limbs crack and pop to the point he looks almost unrecognizable.
The same purple pumping through his veins drip down his chin and he hunches over, vomiting the substance onto the floor. A sick feeling bubbles in Y/n's stomach at the sight, but it only gets worse when the creature advances towards Vi. The redhead slowly lifts her fists, getting back into a fighting stance.
'No, no, no, no.' Y/n chants in her mind when the girl makes a running start. She makes a great leap off of a nearby railing, but before she can make a hit the creature grabs her by the throat with zero trouble and mind boggling speed.
"Vi!" Powder cries, hand clutching the window frame so hard her knuckles turn white. Her and Y/n watch as the girl struggles while propelled in the air, gasping for air as she pathetically scratches at the creature's hand holding her up by the neck as though she's already a corpse.
Powder scrambles to open her box and take out her contraption; a little cymbal-banging monkey with a stone tied between the two instruments. Her chest is heaving and her hands shake so much she keeps fumbling while trying to insert the blue stones into the toy.
Y/n looks down at it. "Powder, that's enough. W-we shouldn't use too much of them." Y/n warns nervously. If just one was able to cause as much damage as it did to that penthouse, then she's sure three would be capable to blow half of this building to smithereens.
However, the bluenette brushes her off, now winding up the toy. "It'll be fine— We need them so that we can stop the bad people." She tells Y/n, both of them jumping at a particularly angry roar from the creature. Vi had crawled into another room and slammed the door on him, and he was now banging on it to try and get in.
"Are you still in?" Powder stares interrogatingly into Y/n's. "'Course." She answers.
"You have to work. For me. Okay?" Powder begs to herself, bringing the monkey up to her forehead in what looks like a prayer before meeting her friend's eyes. Y/n nods in confirmation and Powder reaches in, placing the toy onto the ground. They both watch from either side of the window, watching it begin to walk down the long hall towards the man. The cymbals collide setting off tiny blue sparks and they immediately scramble away covering their ears. They anticipate the explosion when...
Nothing happens... The creature had stopped yelling and banging on the door. All they can hear is its ragged wheezing breath. The two girls meet eye to eye and both look back into the room. With a resounding click the monkey's cymbals clash and they're blinded by blue light.
The bang had been so deafening that Y/n hardly notices that she's now in the air. It feels like the world had turned slow. Her eyes open and she can see the sickeningly magical clouds of smoke above her, and the sparks twinkling like stars in a vast galaxy. They're so close that she can reach out and touch one with her finger.
And then her back hits solid ground.
She's not sure how long she stayed there; laying flat on her back on the soaking concrete. Little droplets had started to fall from the sky and quicky turn into full on pellets.
She tries to sit up and instantly groans from the wave of nausea that washes over her. Her body aches and the back of her head stings, and when she looks down at one of her hands it's scraped and red. She opens her mouth and a small cry escapes.
"Powder?" She whimpers, looking around for her friend. In the midst of the smoke and rain, she sees her trying to get up onto her knees. The girl's head snaps over to Y/n's and she's instantly crawling over to her side.
"Y/n! Are you okay? I-I think we did it!" Y/n only nods. Powder's injuries don't appear to be dire. But the both are of them are full of mud and soot and soaked in water. The two girls stand up on shaky legs and look around them.
"We need to find Vi." Powder urges, antsy to continue. Y/n's eyes that still flit around end up landing on a small lump on the ground; it's the stuffed bunny. She saunters over to it and retrieves it. She holds it out and Powder takes it from her hands.
They wordlessly start walking. They are not entirely sure where they are going. Powder points out a spot up high where smoke and embers waft up into the air from the other side of a wall. There must be another opening over there.
It doesn't take them long, they turn the corner and Y/n's heart leaps; Vi is there standing not far from a large patch of flames.
"Vi, it worked!" Powder exclaims, clutching the stuffed animal tightly in her midst of excitement. Vi slowly turns around. Her face is bloodied and smeared with dirt. She almost appears indifferent, confused. "What?" She mutters, but it goes unnoticed by the two girls.
"Did you see me? My monkey finally worked!" Powder takes a couple more steps closer, Y/n not far behind with a small hope-filled smile of her own.
"You did this?" Vi mutters. Y/n's face falls. Her eyes shift to the flames behind the older girl, and that's when she notices a huge body spread across the ground. Her blood runs cold. It's Vander, but a much larger and more purple version of himself. He appears unconscious or... Y/n didn't want to accept that possibility.
Vi clutches tighter onto her arm and looks down, shoulders slumped. "Why? Why did you do this?"
Y/n's feet are glued to the ground. A mixture of fear, confusion, and regret, maybe other feelings she's never felt before, swarm in her stomach like a never-ending storm. Slowly beginning to cover her in a darkness that feels increasingly impossible to crawl out of. 'This has to be a dream', she thinks to herself.
"I di- I didn't.. I was saving you..." Powder's voice cracks, gaze shifting from Vi, to Vander, to Claggor's blood-splattered goggles lied askew on the ground. "I only wanted to help. I only wanted to help. I only wanted to help! I only wanted to help!..." Powder cries, fat tears now pouring down her face.
"I told you to stay away." Vi's voice raises, shoulders rising and falling with each labored breath. Powder makes plea after plea. Y/n flinches when Violet out of no where swipes at Powder's face causing her to fall harshly to the ground. "I told you to stay away!" She yells.
Y/n's lip trembles. Her hands clutch at the front of her shirt, slowly backing away until her feet hit something behind her. She whips around and sees Vander; he lies motionless and his eyes, now purple, haven't quite closed despite him no longer being alive. She lets out a wail, hands coming up to cover her mouth.
"Why did you leave me?!" Powder screams, clutching her cheek with a bleeding nose. Vi grabs Powder roughly by the jaw and yanks her forward, forcing the girl to look her in the eyes. "Because you're a jinx! Do you hear me? Mylo was right." Vi seethes, her own eyes filled with new tears.
Y/n faces away from Vander, squeezing her eyes shut. She can't bring herself to look at Violet's face, who looks at her trembling frame with an expression of what she thinks looks like resentment. "I... I didn't mean to." She croaks. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Vi-" She cuts herself off with a sharp exhale, feeling embarrassment and remorse for herself.
She had tried so hard, practiced so much with the redhead who she has looked up to since the day she met her, to get to where she is now; finally getting to a comfortable stage where she feels confident enough in herself and her abilities. And it was all thanks to Violet. Violet who pushed her, who comforted her, and who protected her. For all of her life. And now that same girl stands before her with the most disappointment she's ever seen someone regard her with.
She hears Vi lightly scoff and meets her blue eyes. "I should've known better." The girl mumbles, shaking her head and looking back down at the ground.
With her hand clutching her bloody scratched up arm, she starts to limp away. Away from the two girls who had meant no harm, who didn't understand the extent of their actions. Who only wanted to help.
"Vi! Vi, come back! Please come back! Please Violet. I need you, please." Powder yells for her sister, reaching out for her. Knees digging into the hard pavement causing rips to form on her pants and cut into her skin. Her voice rings through the air even when Vi is no longer seen and seemingly gone. Y/n had given up on holding back her cries. A mist had started to descend over the city, however in this moment the world has never felt so small.
Y/n sniffles and wipes her eyes, ridding herself of blurry vision and turns away from the fire. The blazing light's reflections create a paradox while they dance in the puddles and in her tear ridden eyes like spirits of the night.
Violet is gone, it's just her and Powder again. Lately it has always seemed to end up that way. Her mind trails off to why Violet had been here in the first place. Those bad men are no doubt still here...
"Powder," She chokes out. "Powder, lets go." She shakes the blue haired girl's shoulder gently, attempting to break her out of her loop. She peers up at her with tear streaks running down her cheeks, nose red and puffy from constant crying. "Powder?" Y/n grips her arm a little tighter and starts pulling her up to her feet.
"We need to go." Y/n's throat is scratchy and raw, but she seemed to be able to get her point across when she sees Powder nod her head. The smaller girl still hooked around Powder's arm, passes Vander's body. She parts the fire with a wave of her hand and guides them through.
She spares one last glance over her shoulder; as a sort of farewell to the man who she had always looked up to and viewed as family. And then the fire closes.

big question please answer!!
so i was thinking.. i know many people have a hard time reading x reader stories due to the use of “y/n.” and trust me, i understand the trouble.
(it might only be said on my wattpad on the introduction page), so since the reader’s nickname in ‘when i brush your hair’ is “Candy”, would you prefer i write that name instead of constantly having y/n? please lemme know!! i really want to know your preferences.
but do be aware that y/n will show up on rare occasions when someone says her real first name. i just think that would make sense.

When I Brush Your Hair | Chapter 5

The Enforcers had eventually left the Undercity allowing things to simmer down a bit. However the civilians were still upset, and understandably so. In fact, a whole bunch of them gathered into The Last Drop to come up with a plan of action.
"We should hit them back. We've got the numbers to beat 'em!" Sevika argues, slamming her fist onto a table in booming anger.
"Yeah. Let's teach them what it means to mess with us!" A man says, making the whole room shout in agreement. Vander is leaning back against the bar counter, lighting his cigar.
"You sure that's what you want?" He asks blowing smoke out of his mouth before continuing. "We crossed that bridge before, and we all know how that ended."
"You're just protecting you're kids." Another guy pops out and accuses. Pointing at the six of them including Ekko. Y/n stands awkwardly in between him and Powder, absentmindedly scratching her arm in discomfort.
"I'm protecting our people. I'd do the same for any one of you. We look out for each other, it's the way it's always been. This will blow over. We just need to stand together."
"The Vander I knew, the one who built the underground, wouldn't be afraid to fight." Sevika speaks out. Vander takes a few steps towards her.
"Do I look afraid?" His aura radiates intimidation. But Sevika gets up close to his face, staring daggers at him.
"No. You look weak." She growls. Then she whistles a signal to her group and they walk out of the bar.
"Why isn't he doing anything?" Claggor is the first to speak up sounding sad. Powder turns to the group.
"We licked the Enforcer's butts with just the five of us. Imagine what the whole of the lanes could do!" She exclaims.
"Jeez, even Powder wants to fight." Mylo tsks throwing his arms, and starts walking away to the basement. The others slowly start to follow.
"So, why aren't we?" Vi scoffs, visibly angry and scowling. She just passes the doorframe before noticing Ekko's odd behaviour.
"Spill it, Ekko." She squints at him. Y/n and Powder peek around the corner like two gophers.
"Um.. O-okay well, um.. Vander's got a deal with the Enforcers." The boy grimaces.
"What deal?!"
-
Y/n and Ekko are sitting on Powder's bed with her while she shows them a couple of her bombs that she made and decorated. She was always so impressive. Y/n had asked her to teach her how she assembles them a couple times in the past, but she always told her that she'd be no help. Thankfully in the end, Powder gave into the girl's incessant pleading.
All is fine and dandy for the most part. Claggor reads while Vi sits in her chair; probably just thinking like she usually does; and Mylo tries getting a stain out of one of his shirts.
But earlier that day them and Vander decided it would be best if they set up some sort of warning or alarm that would signal to them that Enforcers are coming for inspection. And it was a good thing they did.
At the same time Y/n mimics the way she knocked out that guy from the previous day, the monkey toy they used as the alarm goes off and falls onto the floor.
Very quietly and quickly, all lights are turned off and all that anyone is doing is discarded. They climb up onto the pipes and ceiling joists just above the room, juking an Enforcer who opens the door and now looks around holding a flashlight.
It's dead silent in the room, all Y/n can hear is the heavy breathing through the crude mask all of the Enforcers wear. She looks up and sees Powder in front of her shaking.
Powder was holding herself up by just barely squeezing between two pipes, one of which she was holding on to; the other she had her feet planted firmly against. Y/n thinks "just barely", because the girl was slowly slipping down towards the floor.
What was she thinking putting herself there? Y/n doesn't even remember how she did it.
She instinctively looks over at Vi wanting to know what to do, but the redhead only looks just as panicked as she does if not more.
Now the room feels suffocatingly tense. It doesn't help that the Enforcer takes it's sweet ass time taking one last scan around the room, but it doesn't slow down the act of Powder's hands slipping farther. The others exchange panicked looks while still keeping an eye on the Enforcer below them. All hoping to whatever or whoever that he doesn't shine his light up to the ceiling.
He stands at the door for a moment, his hand resting firmly on the door knob. Y/n's hopes drop. She almost accepts the fact that they might get caught.
But then the door shuts. And Powder falls onto the ground, scrambling to hide behind the table.
Y/N hadn't realize how sweaty she is until now. Her and everyone else stays up in the ceiling until they know they're in the clear. Now all they can hear is their breaths and yelling from a man in the bar above them; from the sounds of it an Enforcer.
It's only a couple of minutes before Vander opens the door. "Are you all okay?" He looks up at the same time Vi jumps down. She's visibly upset.
"No, we're not okay. They almost saw Powder, what if they took her?!" Her voice cracks and Y/n swears she can see the poor girl's hands shaking.
"No one is taking any of you. I'd never let that happen." Vander assures, taking a cautious step toward her.
"It's already happening! You heard him, they won't stop. We need to fight back." Vi punches her hand against the wall to her right, struggling to contain her jumbling emotions.
"And if you won't, I will." She finals. The room is silent.
"I've heard this kind of talk before." Vander sighs.
"Come with me, I want to show you something." He says softly. Vi is reluctant at first, but she leaves the room with him. The door clicks shut, casting the room in a slightly awkward and heavy mood.
"Uh.. It's getting late, I should probably head home." Ekko says to the two girls. He leaves, and Mylo and Claggor decide to head up too. Now it's just Y/n and Powder.
Powder sits down on her bed. Y/n stands there awkwardly for a moment, hand's fidgeting. She isn't sure if she should leave or not. If she's being honest, she doesn't want to. After everything that's been happening the past few days she's been finding herself spending them with Powder and the others . She hates to intrude but she feels a lot better knowing she has someone with her. Other than her dad of course, who she saw earlier in the bar, but that's different.
The smaller girl takes slow steps towards her friend, showing embarrassment.
"I hope I haven't been too annoying being at you're place a lot recently. I just thought it would make you feel better since, y'know..." Y/N trails off, eyeing Powder's face. Powder looks up at her and smiles. She's about to respond but Y/N beats her to it.
"It makes me feel better, and I really like your company. I can always leave if you want me to—"
"No! Don't.. leave." Powder grabs Y/N's arm, who stands in front of her. She pulls her down to sit her beside her. Y/N is slightly taken aback but she listens and watches the bluenette who is looking down at the floor. Then her eyes meet her's.
"Stay the night?" Powder asks. Y/N smiles.
They spend the rest of the duration working on bombs, Powder showing Y/N how they work and her smiling and nodding the whole time. The two older boys had came back with news about the lanes possibly fighting against topside. That had Powder excited.
The two girls had been so caught up in their own little world that they hardly noticed Vi approach them. Y/n looks up when she catches sight of her sitting down on the bed across from them. When did she come back?
Powder's eyes light up when they land on her older sister's hunched frame, quick to reach around her and show off her latest contraptions. "Look, we made them for the Enforcers. These two are smokes bombs, n' are those two are full of nails." She giggles, radiating confidence and contentment.
"They're gonna work this time, I know it." The two young girls share happy smiles. Y/n bends down over the edge of the bed to grab something out of her bag when Vi starts speaking to Powder.
"Me too... You know, Powder, what makes you different makes you strong. Always remember that, okay?" Her voice is soft. Not more soft than usual, but the tenderness behind it gives Y/n the sense that there's more to be said. As though she's concealing something.
She slowly lifts herself up, watching them out of the corner of her eye. She would hate to intrude... However what she doesn't expect is the older girl to begin talking to her.
"How are you holding up, Y/n?"
"Oh— good..."
Vi is hoping to know how she feels after her incident while running from the enforcers earlier that day. Nobody had brought it up surprisingly, seemingly completely forgotten. Y/n thinks she feels okay about it...
"Don't let your fears hold you back. What others say about you shouldn't make you shy away."
Y/n lifts her eyes from her lap and meets Vi's blue ones. They look sad. But she smiles nonetheless, and she can't fight the smile that breaks onto her own face.
Vi gives the two one last smile and gets up, leaving them alone once more. Y/n's eyes follow her movements as she travels across the room, going to sit with the two boys.
"What was that about?" Y/n mumbles. Powder's shoulders slump making her friend focus on her. The frown is clear as day on her face. Y/n places her small hand on hers, which happens to hold a very old stuffed bunny.
"What she said is true." She speaks quietly. She hopes only her and Powder can hear their conversation.
"Your... your differences are so much better than mine." Powder whispers. "You can defend yourself, help others.." She continues as she plays with the bunny's ears, hand pulling away from her friend's gentle hold.
Y/n looks down between them and sighs. It's kind of funny; she had always thought the opposite. Powder may not have been able to create fatal bombs yet, but the girl was a literal mechanical genius, especially for her age.
"It's not easy. My emotions sometimes get the best of me and then everything goes wrong. Yeah, it used to be worse, but it doesn't prevent the fact that I'm still told to hide it."
Powder had looked up at her as she spilled her truth. And it was true; Powder never got to see Y/n use her abilities that often, even during times where they would've been useful. Today was just one of those times that showed how much she still lacks control over them. She was lucky it managed to save her.
"Forget me, though! Let's talk about those shooting skills of yours!" Y/n giggles as she leans into the bluenette, making her blush and laugh when she pokes her cheek.
"No really. I wish you were allowed to use a real gun." She lowers her voice down as they fall back into a comfortable conversation as the late night dawns on them.
-
Vi had migrated to her bed in the bunk above them, and the two boys had fallen asleep as well; Clagger with his old book resting open on his face.
Lastly, the two young girls fell asleep in Powder's bed. The bluenette clutching the stuffed bunny in her arm while her friend nestles her face against her shoulder.
The light of the lamp had long been shut off, the lights from outside somehow not being a disturbance as they cascade a soft green tint into the room through a window. It's quiet.
The definition of, "calm before the storm."

"Vander learns none of this."
"No worries there. Powder took care of the evidence." Mylo replies making Y/n silently glare and flip him off.
"I tried, okay? You don't get it. You're older, you're bigger. It- it isn't fair!" Powder tries to defend herself, throwing her arms around as she grows frustrated.
"So stick with us. Take a punch or two!" Mylo retorts, slumping back into the couch when at the same time the door creaks open.
"Everyone alright?" Vander's voice is heard, making everyone scramble to pretend like nothing happened.
"Never better." Mylo huffs out. Way to make it obvious. Vander walks around the room and behind the couch the two younger girls are sitting on. They avoid looking his way, practically hiding their faces in their knees.
"Good. I don't suppose you can explain why it is that I'm hearing about an explosion and a foot chase topside? Five children fleeing the scene." He inquires. No one says a word.
"What the hell were you thinking?" Y/n just knew it. How he figured out it was them, she didn't know. But she knows that she's mad at whoever snitched.
"That we can handle a real job." Vi's voice cuts through her thoughts, making her turn her head to watch.
"A real job?"
"We got our own tip, planned a route, nobody even saw."
"You blew up a building."
"That wasn't—"
"Did you even stop to think about what could've happened to you? Eh? To them?" Vander motions to the others, who immediately look away to avoid eye contact.
"Where did you even get this tip?" He then asks. It's silent before Powder lifts her head and speaks up.
"We just heard it at Benzo's shop."
"From?" He glowers.
"Little man." Powder grimaces, and Vander has to look away and groan. But Vi quickly stands up, quick to defend.
"I took us there. If you wanna be mad, be mad at me. But you're the one who always says we have to earn our place in this world." Her voice is raised, getting caught in her feelings. Y/n feels overwhelmed and the space between her eyebrows get hot. She wishes she could say something to help, but...
"I also told you time and time again, the Northside's off-limits. We stay out of Piltover's business."
"Why? They've got plenty while we're down here scraping together coins. When did you get so comfortable living in someone else's shadow?" The room is deathly quiet as Vi and Vander have a stare-off. Y/n and Powder share an awkward glance.
"Everyone out." Vander says sounding oddly calm. Everyone very awkwardly stands up and exits the room. Y/N takes one last peak before the door is closed. Her and Powder exchange concerned looks, but decide to leave even though she wants to try listening with that object Mylo is holding up to the door.
Powder goes out back to fetch a few things while Y/n goes up to the bar area. She hasn't spoken to her cousin in a while and she wonders what she's been up to. She kind of scares her sometimes but she feels very fond of her at the same time and can't help but give her a nice warm hug whenever she says goodbye. Even if it's not always fully reciprocated.
Advancing up the stairs Y/n wanders around a bit until her eyes land on a familiar muscular figure hunched over a table with a couple other scary looking individuals. Her smile widens and she makes her way over.
As she approaches, the scent of her cigar grows strong. She waves her hand to rid of the smoke in her face, and when it clears she's face to face with Sevika.
"Hi cuzo, what's cracka-lackin?" Y/n cheers. The woman just looks at her almost nonplussed. She knows that she annoys her, especially when she's with her friends.
"Hey, kid." Sevika huffs. Y/n looks down at the table and recognizes the poker game Sevika must've been in the middle of playing.
"Having fun losing your money?" Sevika's eyes widen and the others sitting around the table are heard snickering. Y/n appears indifferent however; she was being genuinely serious.
"You're funny, kid. What do you want?" Sevika brushes it off, trying to make this quick so the little girl would just leave her alone. Y/n holds her hands behind her back and bounces on the balls of her feet.
"Nothing. Just wanna know what you've been up to." She responds sweetly.
"Not much." Sevika says shortly. She's lying, but her little cousin didn't need to know that. She opens her mouth to dismiss her but the girl beats her to it.
"Aw, that's boring. You'll never believe what happened today, though. Me and Powder went out with Vi and the others, and a building blew up. It was so scary. And then we got chased for hours. I thought I was for sure gonna die, especially when I almost fell off a roof." The young girl rambles, the whole time playing with the gold coins scattered around the table. The others just listen and watch utterly jaw-slacked.
"Uhuh.." Is all Sevika can give as a response.
"Yeahh, hahah.. I probably shouldn't have said all of that.." Y/n trails off and frowns feeling embarrassed. Then she catches Powder's blue hair not too far the stairs.
"I'll talk to you later, cuzo. Bye!" She gives Sevika a hug, pulling away before before she can even reciprocate it, and happily waves before bouncing over to her friend. The woman is left staggered.
Y/n quickly takes notice of Powder's slumped shoulders and sad face looking around the room. The taller girl turns her head and meets her eyes when she notices her now standing in front of her.
"Hey! ...You alright?" Y/n asks, placing a hand on Powder's shoulder. The girl's eyes look to the side and she shrugs.
"Yeah, I'm okay." She answers.
Usually Powder shares everything with Y/n, positive and the negative. So for her to not tell her what's going on when something is visibly bothering her both shocks and hurts her a little bit. Her hand squeezes her shoulder a little bit before letting it drop.
"Alrighty.." Y/n responds, pausing for a moment. Powder opens her mouth to say something but Y/n doesn't notice and beats her to it.
"Well I have to go since it's super late." This makes Powders eyebrows raise and look a little disappointed. She slowly nods her head.
"My dad will let me stay with you tomorrow though. And if not I'll just run away." The shorter girl laughs. She pats her friend's head with a parting smile and skips away.
Powder watches her exit the bar, wishing she could've stayed just a little bit longer.
-
It's the next day, and earlier Y/n's dad escorted her to The Last Drop. Beck knew of the possible dangers associated with her, and didn't want to risk anything. But he was also aware that she would rather be with the other four more than anything during this time. And after him and Vander had a long discussion about their fiasco in topside, he thought it would be best if she too stayed in a safer area with the rest of them.
"Remind me again why we bother with this dump." Mylo asks while picking his nose and flicking a boogie off to land on a wall.
"Vander said to lay low. Enforcers never come down here, so this is as good a place as any." Vi responds as she pants, having just finished a round of using their punching machine that has been there for what feels like decades.
"Oh, what's the matter Mylo? You worried Powder's gonna beat you again?" Claggor teases from across the room. He leans back carefree against a wall, a smirk growing as he watches Mylo's face turn into a scowl.
"Hey, if she didn't keep fixing these things, I wouldn't keep missing." One second after he says that, Powder pops up from behind the counter and connects two wires. The shooting range turns on with a buzz of bright lights.
Her evil smile grows once she hops over the counter and Mylo attempts to hit the targets, and then Y/n looks over to watch too. Boy was he godawful.
"Geez, are you even trying?" Y/n taunts dangling off the railings surrounding Vi's machine.
"Shut up."
"You guys know I wouldn't take you on a job you couldn't handle, right?" Vi asks sounding a little perturbed. Mylo is quick to answer.
"Are you kidding? That was the best job we're ever done! Maybe just don't take Powder and Y/n next time." He says, making Y/n slide off the bars and Powder roll her eyes before taking her aim at the moving targets.
Y/n doesn't see this too often, but when she does she nearly falls to her knees. She's fairly good with a gun and has her own dexterities and what have you, but Powder is without a doubt better than her. It makes her wish she could display her own abilities more often without a skill issue.
And without a problem, Powder hits every target square on, impressing anyone who sees. When it's over she places the fake gun back down on the counter and sneers at Mylo.
"Dang Powder, you're op!" Y/n chuckles and pats her shoulder as they walk over to an arcade game randomly sitting in a corner.
The shorter girl leans her side against the arcade game as she watches Powder play with a dreamy expression, still admiring her. It doesn't last long though because they both hear commotion coming from the large stained glass window. Powder look up at the same time Y/n turns around with a baffled expression. They look through a jagged hole in the glass.
"Tell me where to find them." A man is being restrained by a group of enforcers while one interrogates him.
"Topsider business ain't my concern." The guy argues.
"It's every one of you trencher's concern now. Give me a name." The enforcer gets in his face and sternly demands.
The man spits and it lands on the enforcer's shoe with a splat.
"Ew.."
The two girls share a weary look. Powder steps back and warns the others.
"Hey, guys? You should see this—"
A man is suddenly flying through the room and then tumbling aggressively to the floor, stopping after a couple of rolls. A moment of silences passes where nothing happens, but now the whole group of enforcers can see them.
"Search them." The one in charge says. And one by one they enter through the much larger hole made in the window.
Y/n and Powder have now backed up against the counter at the shooting range. Y/n feels Powder stiffen beside her and looks down to see her hand hiding something in her tiny bag hooked on her belt. That's when she remembers that Powder had been keeping those stones with her. She never thought why, but she's knows now that's it's definitely an inconvenience.
"Go ahead, idiots. We've got nothing." Mylo taunts while holding his hands up in surrender when an enforcer shoves a stick in his face. The two girls internally panic. And when Violet and Powder's eyes meet, the redhead immediately gets the message.
The head enforcer just so happens to be the one to approach the younger two, looming over them as he looks down at them with terrifying looking eyes. Y/n feels her heart drop.
But then it all happens before she even knows it has. Violet turns to Claggor who hasn't moved from his spot, and he pulls a lever that turns on a blue light, making the room significantly darker than it was before. Y/n doesn't focus on that too much, because she's running.
Everyone does what they can to escape; Vi throwing a metal piece at an enforcer's head while Claggor shoves down another to the ground. Y/n and Powder make their way through the shooting range, manoeuvring around the moving figures until they hide behind one at the very back.
They're both panting and shaking, desperately trying to stay calm and not get noticed. Powder grabs onto Y/n's hand and tries to make another run for it, but the second her head pops out from behind their spot a hand reaches out and manages to grab onto her braid. Powder screams nearly tripping over her feet.
Y/n gasps feeling anxiety shoot up her spine, and then her blood boil. When the enforcer pulls on Powder's hair again, his arm spontaneously catches on fire. His hand lets go and he immediately waves his arm around like a fool, trying anything to put it out. Y/n grabs Powder's hand again at the same time Vi grabs Powder's arm. The five of them run to a door farther back and kick it open, now sprinting down an alleyway.
They get maybe 50 feet when they see a couple other enforcers pinning a person up against a wall. They look over at them and drop the guy on the ground completely disregarding him. They turn back around but the other enforcers are charging towards them. They're trapped.
A whistle sounds above them and a ladder slides down beside them.
"Over here!" Leave it to Ekko to randomly save the day.
Vi is the first to jump and climb up. The enforcers are pelting towards them, and Y/n is scared they might not all get up in time. Soon she's one of the last ones below, she can hear the sounds of their boots stomping against the cement as they get closer to her. Her brain feels like a whirlpool of dread and she swears her vision turns blurry.
I’m so dead.
She lets out a fearful a whimper and covers her eyes with her arm, the other one shooting out in a pathetic attempt to defend herself, even though she knows there's really no point. At that moment she gets surrounded by a ring of fire, blocking both sides from approaching any closer. She can no longer see them, but she can hear the enforcers letting out coughs and yells of protest. Powder looks down astonished from her spot on the ladder, making Y/n usher her to keep going with flailing arms.
Even though Y/n makes her way to the top, Vi still aggressively kicks the ladder down to the ground just to be safe. She glares down at the group of men as the fire slowly dissipates then turns around to follow the others.
"You need to hide those crystals." She all but demands.
"Yeah, no shit."
Chapter 5…
y'all better eat this lore up in the future.

Vi had let her and Powder join her and the two boys on their job today. She's so excited; smiling the whole time as she increasingly grows with excitement as the thought of her actually being out here dawns on her.
She huffs and puffs as her arms strain to lift herself up the pipes running up the building they're all currently climbing. Vi is some ways ahead of her, seemingly barely phased by the workout they have to endure.
"We're almost there." The redhead calls out encouragingly.
"Awe, man.." Mylo groans out from somewhere below Y/n. She looks over to her right and sees Powder with a pained look on her face. She laughs, making the girl turn to her and pout. But she can't stop the laugh escaping her own throat as well at the slight predicament they're in. They're just reaching the top when they hear Vi call out once more.
"Hey guys, come take a look." Y/n has to rest on her hands and knees for a second as she finally reaches the landing of the rooftop. She grabs onto Powder's arm to help herself stand, almost yanking the girl's limb off. Then they both actually look up at what Vi was talking about.
"Whoa." The two girls awe at the view ahead of them.
"It's nice getting above it all, huh?" Vi says, and Y/n couldn't agree more. It's not often she gets to go up top and see the actual sky clearly. The clouds, the sun, and birds soaring up high in the bright blue sky. Not to mention the beautiful architecture of the city's buildings. She swears she can smell a bakery somewhere near by.
All of a sudden what looks like an airship flies closely overhead, Y/n instinctively ducking with a spooked squeal as it groans and casts them in a shadow.
"One day, I'm gonna ride in one of those things." Powder asserts, watching it with determination.
"And one day, I'm gonna shoot one of 'em down." Mylo lifts his arm and pretends to shoot it with finger guns. Vi steps forward and slaps his hand away, making him look at her with an oddly warm smile. Suddenly Claggor's expression twists into worry and second guesses this whole idea, which he's been doing since the moment they entered Piltover.
"Vi, are- are you sure about this? Look, if we get caught, we're-"
"We're not gonna get caught. We'll be in and out before anyone notices." She assures, leading them across another roof. They finally stop near the edge, where a flock of birds fly past them. Y/n stares at the building across from them. Does she seriously have to jump from all the way over here?
"All right everybody, follow me. Just don't look down."
Well that made Y/n feel so much better. Now she's gonna end up looking down. Without a hint of hesitation, Violet makes a running start before plunging herself down the roof. Her boots hit the gutters giving her an abrupt stop to quickly jump up and reach the edge of another roof sticking out over a small balcony. She swings for a moment before balancing on the railing, braces herself, then leaps across onto the building ahead. Y/n shakes her head.
Mylo on the other hand wears a smug grin, practically shoving an arm in Claggor's way before he can take his turn. He follows the same steps as Vi, landing onto the building with a thump. Then icing flies in his face when Clagger lands abruptly right beside him, who's shoving a cupcake into his mouth. All there is left are the two girls, who still stand on the other building.
"Couldn't we have at least walked there?" Claggor wines. And despite enjoying the climbing and sneaking, Y/n now couldn't agree with him more.
"Gotta stay out of sight for this one." Vi tells him. Noticing the other two not there, she looks up. Y/n catches her eye and suddenly she feels an overwhelming sensation of guilt and embarrassment. She was going to ruin this for them, she knew it. She steps back, trying to tell Powder to go first. The bluenette glances at her with wide pleading eyes then looks down at the ground below her.
"Called it." Mylo sing-songs.
"This is on you, Vi." Claggor on the other hand sighs, feeling bad.
"I'll get them-"
"No." Vi cuts him off.
"Guys, look at me." She calls out. Powder looks at her, blue eyes still wide. Y/n's are clouded with panic.
"What did I tell you?" Vi tries to encourage them. Y/n can't form any words.
"That.. we're ready."
"That's right! So?"
Powder takes a deep breath, then slides down the roof.
Y/n doesn't get a chance to watch her since she is still standing far from the edge. All she sees is Powder jump from the balcony and nearly fall off of the roof before Vi catches her by the wrist.
Now it was Y/n's turn. She wanted to cry. She's done activities similar to this back home, but that was all fun and games, and not as high up with as big of a gap between buildings. She can hear Mylo whistling as the time ticks by. She looks up and sees all four of them staring up at her, waiting. She clenches her jaw tightly and balls her hands into fists, frustrated with herself. Slowly making her way to the edge, she looks down at the edge of the roof, then the balcony not too far from her left. Then at the actual gap between the buildings. The other one is shorter than she previously noticed.
She gets an idea.
Stepping back again, she can hear the others make noises of bewilderment.
"What is she doing?"
"Is she chickening out?"
"Stop being mean, Mylo."
She blocks the voices out of her mind, and closes her eyes with a deep breath. Just face your fears, Y/n!
If she dies then at least they won't have to worry about her. She'll miss her cat though. With one foot after another, she runs until shes right at the edge of the roof then jumps. The air whips past her face and through her hair; it almost feels like she's in slow motion. She realizes as she's barreling down towards the roof that she didn't take her height into consideration. She can also hear the shouts of the others being thrown her way. She just barely misses it as she hits it with a thud, and feels herself sliding down before Claggor pulls her up by the arm.
"Thank you." Her voice is small, too afraid to look up at the other's faces; especially Vi's. Who she can see is standing in front of her now.
"That scared the shit out of me. What were you thinking?" Vi places a hand on her shoulder, trying to catch Y/n's eyes.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It seemed easier in the moment." She looks down in shame and fiddles with the hem of her shirt. She thought it could've been impressive; she hadn't realized it would affect the others so much. Vi lets out a sigh and squeezes her shoulder one last time before dropping her arm.
"At least you're okay." She gestures to the others with a tilt of her head to get going. Mylo scoffs and rolls his eyes, and they continue their trek to their destination.
-
"What if Vander finds out we're all the way out here?" Claggor calls out to Vi, who's leading them across the edge of another roof. There's chatter coming from every way they look and a bell rings in the distance. Reasonably so, the guy's very tense. Vi doesn't seem to care, however.
"Look around you. You think anyone topside's going hungry? Besides, this is exactly the sort of job Vander would've pulled when he was our age." She comes to a stop and looks down.
"I'm going. Are you with me or not?" She glares at them. Claggor looks back at Mylo who just shrugs stupidly. Claggor looks down in defeat.
"Vander's gonna kill us."
"Yeah, only if we screw up.. So don't screw up." She turns and jumps, swinging down onto the balcony below them. It's silent for a few seconds before they hear Vi give them the all clear. They all make their way down, Claggor helping both the younger girls down before following behind them. Him and Y/n both have the same idea to look over the railing and down onto the streets below them.
"There's tones of enforcers down there." He's right, it makes Y/n a little bit nervous. But she also can't help admiring the elegance of the view.
"Wowzers." She nods her head.
"Means we're in the right place." Vi says and turns to look down at Mylo.
"You gonna get that door open any time soon?"
"Working on it.. Seeing as I'm the only one who knows how to pick locks, I suggest-" Vi all of a sudden aggressively kicks the door open.
"Animals." He grumbles, Claggor hitting the back of his head. The five of them walk inside and take a look at the room. The sun shines brightly onto every surface. Shelf's on the walls hold odd looking knickknacks, and books lay discarded on desks. Vi wastes no time and rushes over to a large bookcase, scanning through the variety.
"You know Claggor, for once you're right. We're definitely not supposed to be here." Mylo says. He stands near a desk and rubs his hands with a wicked look before snatching things off of it. Not long after, the bag they brought is starting to get filled up.
Y/n is crouched down near the end of the bookcase beside Powder, opening a small chest that she noticed was on the floor after her shoe banged into it. As she pulls out an odd thingybabob, two books start flying down narrowly missing her head. She looks up at Powder with a baffled expression, who wears a sheepish grin while holding a wooden horse.
"Must be an inventor." Vi breaks the silence. Y/n looks up from the bag to see her standing in front of the chalkboard.
"Huh." Powder hums in half interest. Y/n scoffs lightly.
"How can you tell? It's just a bunch scribbles." She holds her hands behind her back and juts out her hip. Vi looks back at her and opens her mouth to retort, but Powder beats her to it.
"Whoa, I think this is a real Valdiani." Y/n whips her head to her left and her mind is quickly elsewhere, speeding back over to Powder. The bluenette presses a button and the object opens up playing a soft tune.
"So pretty." Y/n sighs dreamily. Mylo ruins the moment, though.
"Oh, yeah? What about this?" The two girls turn and glance at him holding out some odd metal pincher thing before rolling their eyes.
"That's a nose hair trimmer." Powder sasses making Y/n giggle.
"Keep an eye out for anything that looks valuable, guys.. Before Mylo fills the bag with junk." Vi says while dumping an armful of stuff into the bag. They nod and go back to looking around.
"Uhh, guys?" Mylo gets the other's attention and they look at something on the desk in front of them.
"Wait, Vi, how the hell did we find this place?" Claggor asks.
"It was a tip from little man." Vi says sounding surprised by something. Y/n wants to go over and see what they're staring at, but she notices a hallway leading farther into the apartment. Powder notices what she's looking at and they share a look. The others are still talking but they stopped listening. Y/n lightly pushes Powder's shoulder to make her go first, the two of them letting out hushed giggles at each other when they both show reluctance.
"How can anyone have so much stuff?"
"Simple, just get born lucky."
The other's voices die down once they reach the end of the hall. The door clicks open and the two young girls peek inside. A window across from them shines light into their eyes. A bed and more tables are placed at the far ends of the room. Powder veers the to right, and Y/n notices an instrument leaning against the bed. Her eyebrows raise in interest before she turns to the left and nearly squeals.
"Ooo, look at all the fancy jars!" She rushes over and grabs at them. She could totally take a couple and keep them for herself; put some glitter and coloured water in them or make her potions in them. Her aunt taught her some helpful ones that she could use for good luck and abundance.
"Woo-hoo!" Y/n out of nowhere hears Powder cheer. Her friend stands beside her snatching a sandwich from the table. She never even noticed those. Powder hands the other one to Y/n who takes a bite and grimaces.
"They got a bit stale."
"Still tastes good."
"I mean, I guess so." Y/n absentmindedly brushes off some crumbs from a blueprint sheet, but it ends up sliding off the table revealing a blue chest. The two share a look.
"What do you think is in there?" Y/n asks.
"Let's find out.." Powder tries lifting it, Y/n even helping, but to no avail. Powder reaches around it and finds a button. She presses it and what do you know? It opens.
What they see inside was better than what they expected. Gem stones, six in total, glow an ominous but beautiful blue.
"Wow... they're so pretty..." Y/n holds one in her hand, feeling the grits and edges against her fingertips. Powder holds one up to her face getting a closer look. Y/n giggles when she looks at her face.
"They match your eyes.. and your hair." Powder's eyes meet hers and feign exasperation, but smiles nonetheless.
"Guys, we gotta go!" Vi whisper-shouts from the doorway sounding frantic. When did she get there? Both girls whip their heads to her with a gasp, and quickly start grabbing the stones one by one. Shoving them into their pouches, they starting running. But before Y/n can reach the doorway one slips out of her hand, making her abruptly stop and turn around.
"Shoot, I dropped one!" Her eyes scan the floor frantically in search for it. But Powder grabs her wrist and Vi shouts to her.
"Just forget it, let's go!" Y/n frowns but lets herself be whisked away by the them.
"Come on!" Mylo says from the balcony door where he and Claggor wait. Y/n and Powder practically get shoved by Vi towards them, then she speeds over to the bag. Y/n can now hear someone banging on the door trying to get inside, and feels her body almost come to a standstill.
"We'll be fine. Just get back on the roof." Vi assures. Her swift hands move with precision as she closes the bag. After what feels like a lifetime she finally stands up with one last glance at the door and makes a run for it.
Then the next second there's an explosion. Everyone on the balcony is thrown against the railing by the strong force, knocking the wind out of them and momentarily blinding them. Y/n's ears ring and the dust and blue particles floating through the air make her wheeze. Her tailbone will surely be bruised after this. She almost panics about Vi until the redhead comes running out, seemingly unscathed.
Nobody has anytime to fully get back on their feet. It starts with a crack, until more follow. And in a matter of seconds a part of the building in front of them starts crumbling into pieces and collapsing.
"Hold on!" Vi shouts at them as the place shakes, but    Y/n barely registers it as the balcony floor ahead of them tumbles to the ground below them. She can hardly hear her own screams when the stone slams and cracks all around her.
Then finally, it stops. Vi tentatively walks over to the edge. Her face tells all that they need to know.
"Shit."
-
Next thing they know, they're quite literally running for their lives. The enforcer's yells and screams travel through the streets leaving bystanders alarmed and confused. Y/n's heart is racing. The blood is rushing through her ears and it feels like the earth is shaking around her as she runs. Vi yells at them to go faster, shoving people out of the way.
One of the enforcers standing on a bridge above them throw a weird spinning thing at them, nearly causing Powder to trip over her feet. Y/n's nerves only intensify as she listen to the enforcer's hollers get closer.
When the five of them finally reach the bridge, it's just beginning to open into two to grant a boat entrance. But that doesn't stop Vi and the others. They keep running and leap over the widening gap, Y/n and Powder letting out a shriek as they glimpse the dark water below them before they're back on their feet.
They're winding down streets and alleyways, the enforcers never seeming to get off their tails. Y/n's lungs burn and her legs feel like they're made out of twigs. She can barely focus on one thing with the overwhelming amount of emotions coursing through her.
"This way!" Vi skirts a corner. Mylo runs past it and narrowly misses the enforcers who try to reach out and grab him when he has to run back. The five of them are running down tight alleyways, Vi throwing things onto the ground behind them to create obstacles for the enforcers. It only just barely helps. But thankfully she whacks the cover off of something on a wall that immediately starts shooting out smoke thick enough to conceal what direction they're going in.
It engulfs the whole alleyway causing the men to lose the five kids who end up taking a sharp turn down a new street. Mylo and can be heard in the back urging them to hurry up, shoving Claggor who staggers for a moment.
They end up coming to a stop in front of a garbage shoot. Vi lifts the lid and tosses it to the ground with a clank. The smell is putrid and flies buzz around the thick brown gunk dripping from the rim of the hole. Mylo kneels down in front of it looking down into the abyss.
"Aw man, not again, I just got this shirt— WAH!" Vi kicks him square in the back sending him face first down the pipe. The others follow. Y/n grumbles to herself and takes a deep breath before reluctantly taking her turn after Powder. Vi slides down after her.
Their screams reverberate through the entire pipe. Y/n tries her best to keep her mouth closed to prevent any muck from flying into it, but the moment she feels herself free fall she gives out a great scream. She lands flat on top of Powder's head, who just barely managed to get herself up. Vi follows not far behind landing a few feet away from them with a splat.
"I thought last time was the last time we were gonna do this." Mylo wines.
"Well this time's the last time." Vi snaps.
"Guys, what was that? What the hell happened back there?" Claggor asks. It's silent when everyone looks around and at the two young girls struggling to sit up. Powder frowns.
"I don't know. I didn't do anything!" The bluenette says, visibly annoyed.
"You could fill a damn library with the things you didn't do." Mylo snaps and turns back around sulking.
"Guys, we just emptied a Piltover penthouse right under the enforcer's noses. So, if you're done beating yourselves up, let's get this home."
-
The five of them walk down a street, likely leaving a stink trail behind them. Y/n couldn't wait to get a nice bath once she got home. They pass a few people on the way, paying them no mind. One of them however, calls out from his seat on some wood.
"Nice haul?"
"You could say that." Mylo brags, making Vi give him a scolding look.
"I heard there was some action across the river. Someone, uh.. someone really kicked the nest, huh?" The man continues. Something told Y/n that this was probably going to escalate quickly.
"Is that so?" Vi responds cooly. She turns around to keep walking, but two other men stood ahead blocking the way. So Y/n was unfortunately right.
She wanted to laugh at how ridiculous this was, but she also had no doubt that this was dangerous. She hears the man chuckle and turns her head to see him saunter towards them.
"But now you're.. you're tracking this mess of yours through my streets." Vi is quick to retort.
"Your streets? What makes you think—"
"Listen, we don't want any trouble, okay?" She's cut off by Claggor. Y/n purses her lips and holds in a deep breath, feeling the tensions rise.
"Hear that Deckard? They don't want any trouble." Another man teases. So this guy's name was Deckard? Y/n would so make a joke right now if she wasn't currently shitting her pants.
"You know, in my experience, trouble finds you.. There's no reason this has to get ugly. How about you share a little taste of your treasure there, and we'll call it even?" He attempts to reason.
"No, no, no, we worked too hard to—" Mylo tries to stand his ground but Vi places a hand on his shoulder immediately shutting him up. She trudges towards the blonde and lets the bag fall from her shoulder till it hangs from her hand. She had something planned, and it was making Y/n's mind whirl. It could either go perfectly, or terribly wrong.
"Just a taste?" The redhead asks, instilling the guy with false hope.
"Just a—" The bag is swung against the side of his head knocking him to the ground like a rag doll. Then it's thrown to Powder, almost knocking her against a couple of crates. In no sooner than a couple of seconds, everyone starts scrambling around throwing punches and kicks.
Y/n and Powder subconsciously stumble backwards and their backs hit the wall. Powder clutches the heavy bag tightly in her arms, eyes zooming across the scene taking place not far in front of her. Yells and groans pierce through Y/n's ears making her want to close in on herself and be anywhere but here. She bites her lip and her mind suddenly goes to the bat secured to her hip.
She doesn't always bring it with her because it usually stops her from moving around the way she needs to, not to mention the nails that stick out of it. It's a good thing she brought it today. However, she knows that if she uses it then that means she inserts herself into the fight. She doesn't think she'd be able to handle that without turning into a mangled pretzel. Her hand rests against the handle, eyes flicking from one pair to another, breath coming in short pants.
Powder had grown weak in the knees and fallen to the ground. That's when one of the men slumps on the dirt in front of the two girls. He groans and looks up, eyeing them and the bag. Powder gasps and Y/n's eyes wide. She immediately grabs her friend's arm when she stands up and they start sprinting, narrowly avoiding being squished between the wall and two people.
They run down alleyways and tight streets, feeling like it's increasingly more difficult to breathe. They push crates and wooden planks, hitting the guy in the head and making him grunt out cuss words. Y/n knows they'll probably meet a dead end or run out of stamina eventually. They'll just have to keep going until the guy is too tired until they can attack him together. Two against one is never a fair fight.
They topple over another pile of crates and take a sharp right, Y/n's grip on Powder's wrist never seizing. They run down a dock and round the corner meeting a dead end that's blocked off. They both flatten themselves against the building, trying to be as quiet as possible. Powder peeks around the corner but her shoulder bumps into a wooden plank resting against the wall.    Y/n eyes widen when it starts to fall.
"Oh no Powder, watch out!" She tries to warn her. It hits the ground with a thud. Y/n cringes, she knows it gave away their spot.
Powder is visibly panicking. Her hands fumble as she fiddles with her bomb she kept strapped to her hip, nails falling to the wood beneath them as she fills it and closes the lid.
"Come on Mouser, I need you." She clutches it to her chest then tosses it around the corner. The two watch with eyes wide in anticipation as it rolls and hits the man's foot. It vibrates and buzzes, and with one last click it explodes. Emitting a small cloud of pink dust barely strong enough to harm a small animal.
Y/n's heart drops. Powder slowly backs away as the man menacingly stalks towards her. Y/n stands still in her spot, having an internal battle with herself as her hand slowly closes in around the handle of her bat. Eyes flickering between the two, she watches Powder's shaky hands unclasp the strap around her shoulder and toss the bag over the railing into the water.
The guy lamely attempts to catch it but it's too late.
Y/n gasps before slapping a hand over her mouth knowing the guy definitely heard her. She glances at Powder who looks like she's about to run.
She knows they probably won't get away so easily. Y/n pulls out her bat. The second he turns around, she swings and hits him square in the temple, knocking him out cold.
-
"You did what?!"
"I'm sorry! I tried to fight him off with Mouser, but... she didn't work."
"Who saw that coming? At least Y/n was able to get a hit in. That was a first." Mylo glares at the small girl who stands right beside Powder with a bloody bat, who looks incredibly guilty and disappointed.
"We never should've gone over there." Claggor sighs.
"Doesn't matter. The stuff's gone. It's all right, Powder. At least you're okay." Vi places a comforting hand on her cheek. They enter the empty building they're standing beside.
"Okay?! What about us? I get my face bashed in and she just gets a pass?!" Mylo asks incredulously.
"Yup." Vi responds simply. They all step into the elevator and she cranks the lever to take them down. A few moments of awkward silence pass before Mylo ruins it with his pathetic irritating voice.
"Every time. Every time she comes, something goes wrong. And Y/N's no help at all."
"Mylo stop." Y/n tries to shut him up, a glare on her face as her fists clench.
"She jinxes every job."
"Mylo, if you don't—"
"Just drop it, guys." Vi cuts in, voice sharp and scolding. Mylo scoffs before glaring off in another direction. Y/n rests her head on Powder's shoulder and pats her back in an effort to make her feel better. It probably doesn't do much though, considering she barely softens.
Once they finally reach the bottom, they're met with the green smokey aura of the UnderCity. Y/n stumbles a bit as she skips down the ramp and meets Powder's strides. People and creatures of all sorts wander around the streets and landings high above them. The thing Y/n always really enjoyed about this place was the vast amounts of eccentric characters to see. Sometimes, she likes to observe and people watch.
A lady selling fruit lays slumped against a large box, out like a light. Mylo doesn't give up the opportunity to swipe one. Y/n rolls her eyes and looks the other way just in time to see two very tall people with masks and straw hats making weird grumbly noises walk past them.
There were some awfully strange individuals who do trading in this city. But nothing is more strange than the people inside of the brothel. Y/n tries to look away and glances at Powder to see her reaction, and catches her sneaking peeks at it. It gets real awkward when one of the workers sitting outside make an advance on Claggor.
When they enter The Last Drop it's crowded. They try not to act suspicious and lay low in hopes of Vander possibly not seeing them. He does though.
They walk down stairs and enter their room, and slump lazily onto their seats. It's quiet, and no one bothers to say a word. In Y/n's opinion, this whole thing was honestly embarrassing. They absolutely failed.
