Rise introduced various new characters, but something that I found kind of interesting was that one Rise character seemed to kind of fill part of a role that is kind of usually filled by another character in other iterations of TMNT.

Splinter: Big Mama and I were inseparable

Within Rise, Big Mama is not only one of the Turtle’s enemies but she also fills another role of previously being Splinter’s past love but when it comes to Hamato Yoshi’s past love interests in previous iterations of TMNT Hamato Yoshi’s past love is usually a character named Tang Shen.

Throughout the many iterations of TMNT a recurring character that has been brought up is Tang Shen who is either the love interest or wife of Hamato Yoshi, in various iterations Tang Shen is also involved in a love triangle involving Hamato Yoshi & a third member.

In the IDW comics Tang Shen is the wife of Splinter’s past life & the mother of the Turtle’s past lives.

With Tang Shen having previously been kind of consistently been Hamato Yoshi’s love interest in previous iterations of TMNT it kind of makes me wonder why Rise decided to not have Tang Shen be Hamato Yoshi’s love interest which made me kind of wonder if Big Mama might have possibly been meant to be the Rise version of Tang Shen considering that we do not really hear Big Mama’s real name however I kind of found out that Rise actually does have it’s own iteration of Tang Shen

In Rise Tang Shen actually does kind of get a brief mention in the episode Hot Soup the Game as she is shown to be one of Lou Jitsu’s co-stars when Foot Brute & Foot Lieutenant are telling Casey about Lou Jitsu.

Tang Shen being Lou Jitsu’s co-star & possibly in movie love interest might possibly be a slight reference to how Tang Shen is kind of typically Hamato Yoshi’s love interest in previous iterations of TMNT

Mom Tang Shen AU

So 2012 AU where Tang Shen survives, obviously not unscathed and daughterless, but besides needing skin grafts and walking with a cane bc of her injuries she's alive and her and Splinter go to the US.

She gives me teacher energy, so that's what I'm going with. Yoshi's only work experience is beating ass so he's a bouncer. For a reason she hasn't yet told him, her favorite animals are turtles and it's like a year after they got to NY and settled in so he decided to get his wife four baby turtles as a present. Cue his mutation and accidental turtle baby acquisition, and he's like "How am I supposed to go home to her like this?" So he doesn't

Shen obviously files a missing person's report and worries about Yoshi like fucking crazy, and then two weeks later a giant rat man climbs into her window and has four baby turtles in his arms. He's wearing torn versions of the clothes Yoshi had on when he left two weeks ago and Shen put the pieces together pretty fucking quickly.

She looks at the turtles, and remembers the spirits who convinced her to stay with Yoshi and realized that they weren't spirits, they're her and Yoshi's children. So instead of screaming for help or throwing a lamp at him, Shen just looks at her husband and says, "Why haven't you been home for two weeks when you have such young children with you? Yoshi you are so lucky we have cucumbers in the fridge to feed these babies." She scolds him and takes the boys. "Go shower and change, I'm going to make you a hot meal, and then you are going to let me see if you are hurt."

and Yoshi is just "????" Because Shen doesn't freak out AT ALL and she's like "are you deaf? Go shower you stink" and then she kisses him on the cheek and leaves the room with the turtle children they're apparently adopting now

Yoshi is just so fucking confused but also loves his wife

What if TMNT took place in São Paulo, Brazil instead of New York?

Welcome to my Brazilian au, I made this character sheet of Tang Shen, and in this au she's also know as Big Mama (Like, Tang Shen is her name, but Big Mama is her nickname in crime)

Her spider form is inspired in the Brazilian Wandering Spider, 'cause this is one of the most venomous spiders on Earth. While most spiders will try to flee in face of danger, this one will fight you and probably win.

I'm sick and tired of Tang Shen being a plot device for men and becoming past tense, so in my AU she's gonna have her villain era.

Also her hair pin is designed to look like a Brazilian Wandering spider front legs.

Since this Tang Shen has chinese roots she's a yaoguay, the same species of spider demon depicted in the book Journey to the West.

I'm really open into putting other types of mystica creatures in my au.

Here Tang Shen knows a lot about mystic powers and artifacts, ending up being a collector of art and expensive rare objects, having a gigantic collection of itens that she found, stole or bought over the centuries.

She's married to Oroku Sakiand she's a manipulative villain that wants power and rule over humans. She has one biologically daughter (Karai) and an adopted one ( venus)

I just want an evil lady that is evil because she enjoys it.

Shen wanted to rule the clan with her husband but since he was the second in line, she setted up a dangerous mission for Yoshi and they never saw him again.

She's a magic user but I designed some fan weapons for her

Post ROTTMNT season 2 au where Mikey overhears Splinter talking about his past relationship with Big Mama with Leo and like wishing that his last real romance hadn't ended on such a bad note.

Mikey decides to Do Something About This.

But instead of trying to redeem Big Mama (which he's still TOTALLY planning on doing, just not now) he reasons that what Splinter REALLY needs is to Get His Mojo Back!

SO he decides to set him up on a series of blind dates in the Hidden City.

All of these dates are of course ruined in a myriad of horrible and hilarious ways; the waiter trips into the table, the boys (who are spying on this) not-so-accidentally drive the date off, at least one date is so terrible that they drive SPLINTER off, etc.

This all accumulates with Splinter being even more depressed than he was before the dates, sad and outside the restaurant in the rain.

Only for an umbrella to suddenly block the rain, and a charming Yokai woman about Splinter's age holds out a hand.

They go to a nearby bar and start talking, it turns out she's a former actress who used to star in action flicks on the surface with a cloaking broach she rented out, so they have plenty in common.

They both have a grand old time, laughing and chatting about their glory days, never going to in depth to preserve that magic.

At the end of the night they part ways, but the yokai leaves a card with Splinter saying he can call her again sometime, maybe they can go out sometime.

The card is simple, elegant, and has in bold, curly letters her name:

So I just saw [this post] focused on Tang Shen, and the comment about her name got me thinking.

And because I'm a giant language nerd and know where to look, I decided to look up the parts of her name.

Tang is a Chinese surname and can either be in reference to the Tang Dynasty, or it can specifically be the Cantonese romanization of Deng-- which refers "to the ancient state of Deng, which existed during the Shang and Zhou dynasties in what is now either Henan or Hubei province."

Shen is a Chinese masculine name (which makes it an interesting choice for her) that apparently means 'deep thinker', 'deep thought', or 'spirit'.

All of this is to say, if we take her name as the guiding point, Shen should be Chinese. Whether that means she was an immigrant to Japan, or if she's mixed Chinese and Japanese, or any other number of possibilities is up for interpretation.

But there you go TMNT fandom: Shen should be Chinese.
