Every Step of the Way (Pablo Gavi X Barca! Reader)
Fandom: RPF/FCB
Requested: Nope, I’m testing it out. I’ve been a Barca fan since 2018, but never actually did anything with it lol. Also, I’m aware he doesn’t speak English, but my Spanish is elementary level at best, so I’ll stick to English with Spanish nicknames.
Warnings: ACL recovery discussed A LOT  (I used my sister’s experience with it so yeah)
POV: Third Person (She/her)
W.C. 2208
Summary: What's worse than one ACL injury? Two ACL Injuries!
As always, my requests are OPEN
MASTERLIST // HITLIST

~~(^Pinterest)
Within 10 seconds, the lively stadium became silent. It was a freak accident, and it never should have happened. It was a normal game against Madrid, and she had already scored the point that took the Barcelona team ahead 2-1. Looking back, maybe it was ambitious to go for another goal so soon.
She remembered going for the kick but could not remember anything after that. Maybe she got hit by another player or maybe she twisted her leg wrong. All she knew was that it hurt like hell. It felt like her leg was on fire as she registered being carried off the field by the medical team.
In the locker room, she learned that she had torn her ACL. That was not something she needed to hear during the height of her career. Like her boyfriend, she was one of the youngest on the team and one of the most promising talents. And now, she had to come to terms with being benched for at least nine months.
The same week that she sustained the injury, she was already in surgery. It was a fast turnaround; she felt like she was getting whiplash. Everything during that week hand blurred together, and the next thing she knew, she was in their bed at her and Pablo’s apartment with a metal knee brace. That’s when it started to set in.
What if she could never get back to her normal? What if she could never play again? What if there are complications with her recovery? What if this…What if that…What if… What if…What if…
That’s what Pablo walked in on; his girlfriend of two years was on the verge of a panic attack as she frantically pulled at the metal brace. She was crying and screaming that she was fine. She was just dreaming. She was not actually injured because it was all in her head.
Pablo ran forward, pulling her hands away from her knee quickly before she could do real damage. He held her hands as he watched her thrash around before finally settling down when she met his eyes. Her eyes were watery as she met his, trying to regain her sanity, until she was able to understand what he was saying. “You’re okay. You’re going to be fine, mi vida (my life). I’m here to help you every step of the way. Wait, wrong choice of words.” He was rambling, something he only did when he was extremely nervous. The thought made her smile a little as she squeezed his hands to get his attention. “How are you feeling now, mi amor(my love)?”
“My leg is on fire,” She sighed, and Pablo had to hold back the smile since he knew the thrashing and pulling at the brace did not help her in any way. If anything, it made the pain more intense. Instead of voicing these thoughts, he just moved her to sit up on the bed. “Where are we going?”
“We are going to get you out of bed and get food. Then, I can give you more pain meds,” He replied quietly as he leaned down to press a small kiss to her forehead before kneeling to make sure none of the cogs on the brace came undone. That was the last thing they needed. “What are you feeling?”
“I don’t really care, whatever gets the pain to stop faster,” She complained as he pulled her up to stand on her one good leg. He pulled her crutches over as she playfully glared at him with no *real* heat behind them. “Do I have to use the crutches? They hurt my arms.”
“I could always carry you around,” Pablo offered with a smirk as he moved his arms to be under her arms and around her back as he picked her up straight. Clearly, this was not what she envisioned, causing her to laugh. Pablo chuckled with her as he was happy she was starting to get out of the deep rut she was in moments before. “Was this what you were thinking?”
“I imagined bridal style, but now looking back, this is probably the only plausible way you could carry me,” She admitted, and she was right. He could not really hold under her knees because of the stitches and the brace. It would have been more uncomfortable for her than using the crutches. “I feel like a ragdoll.”
“The cutest ragdoll I’ve ever seen,” He joked with her, causing her to roll her eyes as she slapped at his shoulder. “Hey! I wouldn’t hit the person who’s holding you up right now.”
“You wouldn’t drop me,” She gasped in mock offense. Pablo sent her a look that said ‘Challenge me,’ and she knew it was over. He loosened his hold on her as she slowly slid down his chest. She jokingly pleaded, “No, Pablo, please. Don’t let me go!”
“I’d never leave you,” He reassured as he pulled her back up and kissed her. “I’ll be by your side every day until you’re back on the field.”
“Then you’ll break up with me?” She teased.
“No,” he chuckled bashfully as he hid his face on her shoulder. “I’ll be on the sideline then.”
~~
After a week of recovery and relaxation, she started rehab. The specialist started her out on small exercises like bending her knee and slowly putting more weight on it. It was a slow process, but she was getting to the point where she could walk unassisted. Sure, she still had to wear the metal brace and use at least one crutch, but it was so she did not strain it any more than she already had.
And who was by her side through every appointment? Pablo. Who was there every time she needed new medication? Pablo. Who was there to carry her every time she did not want to walk because he had no backbone when it came to her? Pablo. Boyfriend of the Year, honestly.
It finally got to the point where she could go to a game a month after her initial injury. Not to play in it, but she could sit in the stands and cheer on her favorite country. She was cleared just in time to attend the final game of Spain’s European Championship qualifying group against Georgia, and of course, her favorite midfielder was playing. She was not on the sideline per se, but she was in the stands in the first row from the pitch.
She was wearing one of Pablo’s kits (obviously) as she leaned her body weight against the barrier, cheering him on. It was still early in the game, and there were no points on the board. He was doing an amazing job given that he tweaked his leg a couple of days prior in the Barcelona game. He was running like he owned the field and making some good plays.
Within 10 seconds, the lively stadium became silent, and she felt her heart drop. All she did was blink, and suddenly, she knew something was wrong. The camera zoomed in on Pablo, who was lying flat on the ground, clutching his right knee. His face clearly showed his pain, and it hurt her to see him in pain. It took a few minutes, but he was walking back on the sideline, getting checked out.
He came back a little while later for another play. Before he even started running, she had that feeling in her gut again. It was not long after running back to the field that he was kneeling on the grass, clutching his leg as the yellow card was thrown.
It felt like forever for her. She wondered how long it felt for him. How bad did it hurt? How bad was the damage? Did he just dislocate his knee? Would he be back in later?
She did not get to delve too deep into the rabbit hole. He was walking, well limping, off the field again with some assistance, but at least he was walking. That had to have been a good sign, she thought. She turned to grab her crutch, so she could make her way up to the concourse. Maybe they would let her down into the locker room to see Pablo.
It was a little difficult given that the game resumed and people were back up and cheering, but she managed to get to the concourse without tripping or injuring herself more. She approached a couple of security guards that she knew personally.
“Do you know if I’m allowed to go down to the field or in the locker room?” She asked, hopeful, as they stepped away to radio down to the security by the locker room. It did not take them long to go back over to her and direct her to the elevator. Once again, it felt like forever, but she made it down to the base floor.
She hobbled her way over to the locker room where she immediately recognized one of the Barcelona physicians walking out. It was eerily quiet despite the game being in full swing just outside the hall. It filled her with nerves.
She needed to keep her composure because he needed her support more than ever. She took a minute for herself and took a few deep breaths before she pushed through the door. Despite expecting to see him injured, nothing could have really prepared her for seeing him flat on the table.
She limped over beside him where he had one arm over his eyes and the other fist clenching as physicians assessed his knee. She made sure to stay out of the way as she grabbed his fist, unwinding his fingers to grasp at her hand. She used her other hand to run through his hair as he kept his eyes screwed shut, leaning into her.
After a few moments, the physicians finished up. Instead of vocalizing what was wrong, they gestured to her leg before pointing at him. They stepped out of the room, and that’s when Pablo noticed they were not touching his leg anymore, causing him to lift his head and look around. She took her hand out of his hair as she sat on the table since her knee started bothering her, and when he laid his head back, it landed on her lap. She moved her hand right back to his hair as he stared up at her.
“Guess who gets to play nurse now?” She attempted to joke.
“If you’re insinuating that it’s you, we’re screwed because you’ve only been recovering for a month,” He sighed, “No offense.”
“Oh, none taken,” She replied sarcastically as she took her hand out of his hair and leaned back on it. Immediately, he started complaining as he used his hand that was not already holding hers to reach back to find the other. “No, that was mean. Say you’re sorry.”
“I’m sorry, mi amor(my love),” He mumbled as he stuck out his bottom lip in a pout. “Will you play with my hair again now? I’m in pain. Speaking of that, did they say what they think it is?”
She smiled down at him as she put her hand back into his hair and he reached his hand back to hold her wrist there. “I know you are, and I’m sorry. At least we get to go through the same recovery.”
“You’re lying,” He gasped, eyes widening as he sat up and looked back at her. “Do they think I tore my ACL? That would mean I’m out for the season! And the EuroCup!”
“Welcome to the club,” She tried to joke, but he was not laughing. She moved so that she was sitting right next to him as she wrapped one of her arms around his shoulders and still held his hand in hers. “Hey, don’t start just yet. They probably need to take you for some X-rays and do a couple more tests. Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. You could have just strained it.”
“How long would I be out if it’s a strain?” He asked quietly, leaning back into her embrace.
“Pretty sure it’s anywhere from three weeks to three months,” She said after she googled it. “Whatever happens, just know I’ll be with you every step of the way…wait. Not that. Wrong choice of words.”
That’s what broke him. He started laughing as he leaned onto her shoulder before whispering, “I get it.” Then, the physicians came back into the room with a gurney to take Pablo to the X-ray. He looked nervous and anxious again, but as soon as he looked over at her, he knew he would be fine. “Will you hold my hand, mi vida (my life)?”
“Of course, I will,” She answered endearingly as she stepped aside for the physicians to move him to the gurney. She grabbed her crutch and followed them toward the X-ray. He looked over at her, and at that moment, he knew that he could not live without her. They would be with each other through every step of the way, and when they were both healed, he knew just the way to thank her.

wait i had no idea u did art! u drew that like avatar of urself that's in the thumbnail of many of ur vids? :D
i am an artist yes but not all of my thumbnail art is done by me! i've been doing more of it myself lately just kinda as practice and quick turnaround time since i'm getting back into art anyway, but a large majority of my thumbnail art for the past couple of years has been from my friend @Katydiids who I go to when I want some Official™ channel art that looks really really really good, like for example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she's incredible and has a wonderful style!!!
i'll also sometimes commission from other artists when the request is a bit more specialized, for example the art in the Ratchet & Clank thumbs were done by another friend, @tigertoony !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but like i said, recently I HAVE been doing a bunch more of the assets myself! mainly cause, truth be told, lately i've been laying down tracks right in front of a moving train when it comes to scheduling LOL. but, again, it's good practice! my work definitely pales in comparisons to some of the other talents featured, and i love love love commissioning artists when it's not a last-second job, but here are examples of the stuff you'll see from my end!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and for future reference: thumbnail artists who draw me or my co-comms for any given video are credited in the descriptions 99.9999% of the time, and the remaining 0.0001% is either a drawing i did myself or it's an oversight! so always check the description if you're curious who did what!

i think those posts that talk about how The Fandom Turnaround (tm) has gotten much much shorter in the past years & how the sharing of fan-made content is on a steady decline have a point, but they've also rung hollow for me for quite a while and i've just realized why:
oc artists have been living like that this whole time. and i myself am an oc artist— an amateur, for sure!!! i am not nearly as talented as nearly all of my friends when it comes to the visual arts, but i am improving and my work still deserves to be acknowledged.
i get trapped in these little echochambers where i wonder if my art is the scum of the earth, or if people just aren't reblogging it because it isn't directed at a specific fandom.
take my voidfish cosplans. that was a once-in-a-blue-moon fandom post. and it was a sketch. it took me all of an hour to make, and it blew up to a hundred notes because it's fandom content.
my oc art takes me much longer, and it's a miracle to even get half as many notes as that. my oc art usually gets anywhere from 15 to 30 notes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: three screenshots of the notes on some of my art posts. the first has 24 notes, the second has 18, and the third has 30. end ID.]
and this includes all of my self-reblogs and, of course, likes, which i'm sure we all know by now don't do shit. one of my most recent pieces i spent nearly 40 hours making, and as of writing this post, it sits at 24 notes. taking into account self reblogs and likes... yikes!!
most people whose oc work gets popular does so because they were either popular fanartists beforehand or the work displays insanely good technical talent (or, rarely, they just get very lucky). and good for those people!!! but i also put a lot of work into my oc content, and so do a lot of my friends. our work also deserves recognition. supporting fanartists is not the end all be all. independent artists who aren't heavily tied to fandom often get discouraged because no one is interested in the work they create. it's really sad to see.
so support oc artists!!! scroll through "my ocs" "my characters" tags on tumblr!! yes the sorry excuse for an algorithm here sucks but you never know!!! you might strike gold!!! support your mutuals that you already have!!!! support small artists and beginners!!! enthusiasm for more independent artists' work can and will only foster an attitude that will help both fandom and non-fandom creative settings, but don't leave non-fandom work behind.
feel free to drop the urls of oc artists you know in the notes :]

Idk in my idyllic world the use of ai could improve animation workflow and catapult junior level artists into creative leads roles faster if there's less menial work to be done.
We could have artists still in charge of creative decisions and drawing vis dev while the computer assists with the most labour intensive steps of making shows or movies.
For simpler shows for instance it would be neat I think if you could run your storyboard through a script and have the machine import all relevant assets staged to the best of its abilities instead of manually having to drag props and rigs into your shot and scaling everything before you can even begin to animate (does that tech exist already? Probably).
Like nowadays we already have animation programs where you can set deformer limitations.
youtube
i could imagine a possible future where software includes or does subscription services to ai trained on work by artists who got paid to draw or animate template motions or anatomy references. something like generating smart bones could become an automated feature. i can maybe even foresee tech that can look at a character model or design sheet you've drawn and generate a rig for it. in all these scenarios you would have to correct stuff and tune things to your liking, but it gives a considerable head start to the work.
More dynamic shots could be made on smaller budgets if we gave ai props or backgrounds and said "give me this but rotated a little" instead of drawing the same damn chair from 10 angles as a prop artist, I refuse to believe anyone's passion in life is to make prop turnarounds or clean up inbetweens.
what if you had an ai that was trained on drawings of heads at every angle, animals in every angle, a slew of expressions and mouth shapes, then gave it a character ref drawn from a few angles and bam it makes the vtuber rig for you.
this still leaves space for original art and would still require a skilled creative to make something look it's best, that could be a gig. more animators could potentially begin their own smaller studios if cartoons are way easier to make. if anyone could potentially make their own movie in the future, charge people to do it right! no computer can replace a human knowledgeable in film or drawing to guide it in the right direction. without creative people at a production's core, i think the future of ai film is just a very, very, sophisticated version of goanimate than can also do art theft.
this could become the weird futuristic version of "i wrote this children's book can you illustrate it for me?" but instead your mom's friend wants to commission a show pilot they wrote a screenplay for.
When animation was drawn on cels we had entire painting departments whose job it was to paint each individual frame by literal numbers, and it was tedious!! Now we have the paint bucket tool for digital coloring, and software like Toonboom lets you color in one frame then generate the coloring for the proceeding frames. We still have a colour and painting department, it's just different work now. but now we also have people making full color cartoons from their basements because Flash was released for personal computers with said digital tech along with computer generated motion tweening for animation!!
Junior animator and junior bg painter or prop artist roles will probably face an overhaul where more work can be done with less people. But the utopian outcome would be these junior artists can sooner take up lead or supervisor positions where they get to execute their own ideas instead of someone else's. more shows or movies could be produced with less crew for less money, slashing costs when deciding what to greenlight or to take a risk on new talent. The problem is capitalism would make it suck because it only cares about exploiting workers for those cheapest costs possible and forego the necessary human crew required to make the difference between machine-assisted productions and pure ai generated slop

'what if the competition between Lando and Oscar turns bad?' between my landoscar post and comments on other SM content it made me want to get weird in notepad again
I'm tagging @481boxboxbaby and @twinkodium who've asked but I'm sorry if someone's asked to be tagged and I missed it! also tagging @huntscunt who's tags put this idea in my little head
(caveat that I'm a casual fan who happens to have been around F1 fans all my life so this is just my not remotely official perspective lol)
just to state I think it's a given that we're all so excited for McLaren's future with these two is that Lando and Oscar feel like generational talents. and they're also very different as drivers and every race is exciting to watch even just for them. also the fact that Oscar was the jolt of competition that Lando needed.
and honestly I'd be more worried about their future harmony if they hadn't already had so many highly competitive and charged moments in their first season together:
Oscar came in at a surprisingly even level with Lando apart from the obvious difference in experience. he's taken risks that have on balance landed decently on the side of ballsy/respectable vs total failure and the time spent as reserve driver hadn't deteriorated any of his ability. so it was fair to worry for a while if Lando would take the competition as motivation or frustration esp after the disparity between him and DR in 2022.
I really liked the sort of respectful if tentative camaraderie Oscar and Lando showed each other when the car was an absolute tractor. but I liked it even more the fact that the turnaround at McLaren by Silverstone saw them both still in such a good place while being very competitive. that was I think the start of us seeing that Oscar wanted to prove himself a real team player and good teammate by starting the habit of showing up consistently for Lando's podiums/qualis.
the pit lane ding-dong in Monza was definitely the biggest test they've had - and that a lot of teammates will ever have - and the whole thing was handled really well all around. Andrea did the right thing of being big bad boss and Lando was quick to say that it was prob down to misjudgement (which is what I always thought) and that they still respect each other the same. I wasn't as active then so I can't remember if Oscar was asked for a response but I do remember my friends/family telling me that it was impressive how that didn't cause any major damage between the drivers since that's a pretty major incident to happen so early in a new partnership.
side note here to say that the ppl around me who've been watching F1 since the 90s overall feel like the hothead in-fighting with teammates seems to be fading/getting less intense with the younger generations. maybe it's because alpha male mentality seems cringe to gen z or because awareness of mental health is way more prevalent. Gasly and Ocon are relatively young drivers but even there the situation is pretty rare and because of hanging onto childhood grudges. I don't get the impression that any of the people around me feel like the Norris/Piastri partnership is likely to blow up or generate bitterness just because they're competing so closely ??
it's fair to say that Oscar has seemed genuinely happy to acknowledge that Lando is the McLaren brand representative and the established fan favorite within the sport as well as the team's fanbase. he's extremely mature for his years and incredibly well-balanced in terms of ambition. he's almost tailor made as a perfect compliment to Lando. EDITED TO ADD: see Oscar's almost lifelong friendship with Logan Sargeant as an example of Oscar having duked it out on track with someone for years while remaining close friends the whole time. and this was Oscar interrupting his own victory radio message to say how awfully he felt for Logan crashing out early. and that this is what Oscar felt about his and Lando's partnership toward the end of the season.
EDITED TO ADD:
Tumblr media
Silverstone is a perfect encapsulation of how Lando has felt about Oscar from the very start and this was so beautiful to say.
Lando has measured himself by Lewis Hamilton-level goals since karting. Oscar wants to qualify well and win races. Lando was brought into F1 extremely young coming off of huge expectations and has placed enormous pressure on himself since as early as his second year in F1. Oscar has taken a business-like approach to his career since he was 14 and his calm sense of focus and determination comes from focusing on the race ahead and not letting much else in.
Lando's emotions being driven by his superstar destiny/status and Oscar's ability to have calm perspective even during a race is as solid a foundation as you can get in an F1 partnership honestly. they'll absolutely have the same conflicts that all teammates do and the media and DTS will explode those out of all proportion (both of which I ignore anyway). but I really can't see Oscar suddenly flying off the handle or holding grudges and I can't see Lando becoming a driver who suddenly wants to sustain a bad relationship with his teammate after all these years. Oscar is very clearly not the type to develop a crazy ego and Lando genuinely has more of an insane high self-expectation complex than that big of an ego.
even setting aside the parasocial widely felt agreement that they seem to genuinely like and respect each other, neither of them are alpha types and they're not both superstars jostling for publicity and they didn't come up together with a ton of existing history. idk it's just not on the F1 cards that they become icy or resentful.
so while I know no one can see the future and they're both relatively young and could change I don't really feel apprehensive?? and it's way too early to know if either of them will split from McLaren or when. especially if the car stays competitive with RB and Merc then it's the best place for both of them for the foreseeable (and prob most likely since competitive openings elsewhere look to be scant for the next 5ish? years but pls correct me if that's wrong!).
.

side side side note: I personally would not want to see Lando at RB. I know he's itching to try that car but unless RB and Max change drastically before then, Lando would positively shrivel up there. he's a superstar and he needs to be someplace he can be a superstar. it's also why I'm glad Carlos and Daniel moved along bc that's why those friendships are still so strong. we saw what had begun to happen when Lando was eclipsing Daniel and I don't even want to think about Carlos and his family if Carlos was teammates with a dominant Lando.

nice words from Sarah about the Riverdale cast
I also want to mention Charles Melton, lately of Riverdale, who plays the younger man in the film. Riverdale started strong—a little bonkers but fun and stylish—and then went completely off the rails before wrapping up its seventh and final season this past August. Charles Melton is already tipped to contend in the Best Supporting Actor race this year. He might legit go from supporting actor in a goofy teen drama to Oscar nominee in the same year, which is a FAST career turnaround. I wish him well, the actors were never the problem with Riverdale. That was a very talented cast that consistently elevated increasingly crap material, and I hope they all get a chance to show what they can do now that they’re free.

tbh I don't think Kendra did much of the actual engineering part of all those schemes to kill Don, which is why she was taken off-guard when they failed. like she did do the planning, sure, she's an overdramatic Wile E Coyote just like him, but Jase and Jeremy had to build the machines for her bc every time she tried she got distracted thinking about that goddamn frog's stupid muscles and stupid face and STUPID theatre kid voice and why the fuck did he have to meet all her standards- aaand now she's got like three different soldering iron burns. oops.
it works out fine because Jeremy is better at engineering and Jase is better at coding, she's more of an all-rounder whose talents lie in figuring out how to make disparate pieces work together, but nonetheless they did still have to suffer through her complaining about the AUDACITY of this Othello Von Ryan guy to be so annoying and so hot AND so smart at the same time. how dare he make it difficult for her to truly hate him. clearly these are acceptable grounds for murder. (she bought them both Starbucks afterwards to make up for it)
You know, I'm taking this and eating it right up!! Like I said before, I really like character development and them having a turnaround from villainy to something different. Kendra is no exception to that in my AU and mayhaps she just needs some nice people to show her the way. I was also considering to have her go into a different field when it comes to her job and I'm liking the idea I have more and more so maybe I'll stick to that.. I have also accepted the headcanon that she calls Donnie Frog whenever she sees him from now on.

not to goofus & gallant again but Viv keeps making it easy
when the fundraiser for LD was happening they included charts breaking down how all the money would be spent, total transparency
and Fable has just posted about wanting to give animators who worked on the pilot first dibs on animating the series
meanwhile Viv keeps insisting the Broadway VAs somehow aren't charging/cost more than her OG cast and dodging critiques of how an industry created show somehow looks worse than Helluva Boss, even though Helluva also works to pretty tight deadlines (an episode every two/three months is a pretty quick turnaround imo)
Also there's an open call for new employees pretty darn regularly on Twitter, which would invite the biggest amount of submissions possible. I think it's a fair point that some employees will just naturally move on or start families, so some turnover is inevitable, but Spindlehorse somehow seems to be in a continual state of hiring and expansion. it just doesn't make sense unless their studio is far less stable than they're letting on
I would absolutely love to see a real, factual, undoctored breakdown of how Spindlehorse spends its money. I imagine it would include things like "Broadway talent" and "abused owl vacation."

Welcome!
Hello! My name is Charlie G. I’m a storyboard artist, director, supervising director and writer. In my time in animation I’ve worked on projects including Jellystone, Big City Greens, Harvey Beaks.

I’d like to officially welcome you to the first unofficial installment of the Official Boxtown Production journal! This is intended to be my official diary as I attempt to create the pilot for Boxtown, an indie film noir buddy comedy pilot starring Alex Hirsch and Tara Strong that’s scheduled to come out around Late 2023 - as well as my own personal journey as an artist.
I wanted to talk a little about my intentions in creating this project. The two main characters, Detective Tim Standing and Bill the Orphan have existed since around 2008 when they were created for a webcomic I was doing in high school.
Tumblr media

In 2016, I revived the characters as the inspiration for a new project called Boxtown. Instead of superheroes as they originally were intended to be, I turned them into detectives, based on my lifelong secret obsession with wanting to be a detective that first started the moment I saw an episode of Inspector Gadget.

I want to create an original internet production that is of very high quality. Obviously, this is a very difficult thing to accomplish. So, this blog will be my attempt to document my difficult experiences while also highlighting the incredible art of the artists that I am so, so lucky to be working with. Boxtown’s team combines seasoned TV animation talent with fresh indie animation talent to create something that is intended to feel new but like a progression of the legacy that has come before.

I hope you’ll join me on what has already been a pretty exciting journey! I just want this to be a space where I can document the BTS material and general creation of the project. I also plan to share concept artwork, animation tests, and environment tests here. And our goal is to always credit the artists who created this material properly.

Speaking of DR2 being intentionally derivative, Sonia Nevermind:
Where Gundham inherited and evolved Taeko's affected persona, there's also Sonia here to play on the expectations created by Celeste.
From the beginning of Danganronpa, Celestia Ludenberg was being called out as a clearly fake name. Celeste presented herself as a member of European aristocracy, but Makoto repeatedly calls bullshit on this. She's quite visibly Japanese (at least, according to Makoto), so her insistence that she is of strictly French and German descent is a hard story to buy. Makoto isn't convinced for a second and points out her obvious ethnicity multiple times.
Come Danganronpa 2, we're introduced to the similarly named Sonia Nevermind: The Ultimate Princess of a fictional European nation. She is precisely what Taeko was pretending to be - But the trick is that she's completely genuine. There is no trick. She's exactly what she claims to be - and, in an ironic turnaround from Taeko/Celeste, Sonia is fascinated by Japanese culture.
This is what makes the derivative elements of DR2 so much fun; It's not just a simple copy/paste. There's so much effort put into what element reminds you of what, and what that means for the characters. Celeste was essentially split down the middle, influencing two separate characters.
She's not the only one, either. They do the same with other characters, like Sayaka Maizono. Sayaka's positivity and Ultimate Idol Talent evolved into Ibuki Mioda, the Ultimate Musician - However, her role as the protag's treacherous BFF for the first case morphed into Nagito Komaeda, himself a clear derivation on Makoto Naegi.

I dont think people fully understand the scale of production animation requires. Let me see if I can part the veil a little bit.
Let's say you're an animator fresh out of college. You're passionate, you're experienced, and you've got big plans for an amazing animated series that will finally unseat the mouse. You've even got a successful kickstarter which has secured your livelihood for the next 4 years. All you have to do now is make it.
Episode one, we're going to start small. It's tempting to put everything you've got into this first episode, but it's more important to have a quick turnaround. So let's do 5 minutes. At 12 fps that's only 3600 frames. With an average shot length of 16 seconds that's 225 drawings to animate. (That's a big handwave, but I'm just trying to give you an idea of scale here.) We keep the shots flat but expressive, and auto tween as much as possible. We still want it to look professional so we need color and backgrounds. And of course we need voice actors, sound effects and music. Let's pretend we got a buddy to help us out with that who's amazing and got all of the audio situated perfectly.
It still takes about a year for that first episode. 225 drawings is still so much for one person, and compromises probably happened somewhere. Maybe you wind up trimming it down to four minutes. Maybe you reused the same drawing for your main character across several shots. Maybe 12 fps is sorta more like 8 fps in practice. But it's done, you did it, and you release the first episode of your passion project out into the wild to critical acclaim and an audience hungry for more.
Next episode you hire someone on to do backgrounds because screw that and you have the budget for it. Your audio wizard friend still has everything figured out on their end. All you have to do is animate. It's easier this time, you've had a year drawing these characters now. The introduction of your primary antagonist in episode two requires fancy new backgrounds, new music, and definitely lighting. You want to give them a proper entrance. Episode two comes out in a year as well, but with fewer compromises and better overall production. Your audience still loves it.
You've found your stride now, and you've hired on some extra talent. Over the next two years you're able to slam out three more epidodes. And great news, you were right! Your series is amazing: it's the indie darling everyone has been waiting for! You open a patreon and get enough support to continue the series indefinitely!
In the time it's taken you to make 5 episodes, Disney has released Amphibia in its entirety.
Animation is labor intensive. It's a team sport, even at the smallest scale. And if you get it wrong? That's a year of your life traded in for five minutes of fame. It. Is. Hard. Burnout is real. Mistakes happen. It's high risk, very little reward. There's a reason these indie productions tend to be flashes in a pan, and why so many projects get dropped out of nowhere.
I dont want to be discouraging. If you want to be the one to make the youtube animated series to rival The Owl House, I respect it and I want to see it. But maybe consider animation not the best media you could chose for long form entertainment.

Hi there! I wanted to ask, what were your impressions/thoughts of Tsurune season 2 episode 1 so far? And the colors symbolism in the opening song with the ribbons? Just curious about your thoughts, thanks and have a great day!! :D
BRUH. I LOVED IT??? FUCK YEAH, THAT WAS AMAZING.
I really wonder how all those annoying Anons who filled my inbox with garbage back in 2019 are feeling right now, because just in this one episode, KyoAni has fixed literally every defect that I had pointed out in S1. The amount of improvement is just surreal.
First of all, the storytelling this season. The freaking storytelling. You can tell the difference between works that a studio actually places their bets on and the ones they don’t by the amount of effort that the animation team puts into the flow of each episode. S1 was an ungodly mix of slow pace that suddenly went too fast at punctual moments without any warning, bad humor, boring tone, missing information, inconsistencies and shit that the animators pulled out of their asses to cover up plot holes. This one, though? Smooth as a feather. Full of well-thought details. Scenes and events connecting properly with one another. Flashbacks very nicely timed. It was entirely an anime-original episode, 90% non-canon content, yet there’s canon info at every single second. I love the little things, such as the way that we’re led to think that the MVP of the sports event is going to be Rika and the show makes use of every possible hint that it’s going to be her, until the very last second, where it turns out that it’s Ryouhei. Awesome screenplay right there. This episode was meticulously planned and it shows.
The changes in visual. The upgrade in the artstyle is the most easily noticeable thing about the animation of this season, but the quality is a million times better too. The characters also have a lot more facial expression now. I once talked about Morimoto Chinatsu’s incredible talent for character design and the way that she goes as far as giving not just different hair and eyes, but also different eyelashes, eyebrows, ears, noses, mouths, chins, jawlines and even fucking wrists to every single character that she drew for the novel. And seeing S1 doing the opposite and giving every character a base face was just... no. So now that there’s been a turnaround and the characters externally show what they’re feeling and thinking, following their journey is a whole new experience. That moment when the team stares at Minato after he answers Masaki’s question is pure character study right there. And it’s probably the most blatant example of this season’s improvement, given that we never had this in the previous one. I also love how the expressions are not just there, they’re on-point. On par with what the novel tells us about them. My biggest peeve with S1 was that I’d look at these kids and a voice at the back of my head would go “who the fuck are you people”. Those weren’t the characters I knew. They didn’t look like them and didn’t act like them. But now I recognize them. These are the kids I read about. They finally feel like themselves.
The symbolism of the series. By God, so many treats in this episode in that regard. The yesterday-today-tomorrow blossom splashed with watercolor in the team’s theme colors. The intimist approach of the shots. The way that Minato and Shuu’s positions oppose each other on-screen. The lighting, the colors, the smear filter… literally everything is more vivid and lively. One of the things I recall commenting about S1 is that it didn’t feel like a KyoAni anime because KyoAni’s works are very immersion-based. You can feel yourself being inside that world, together with the characters. But I couldn’t feel that from Tsurune’s first season at all. With this one, I was able to dive head-first into it. It was absolutely magical. I also love that the leaves that fly out of the targets whenever the characters hit now don’t look so obviously like CGI.
Personality traits. They’re fucking everywhere. Like I said, this was entirely an anime-original episode, yet there’s canon info at every single second. Even better: information that clearly contradicts S1 but that matches the novel. Seiya being a smartass little shit full of wit instead of a Minato-obsessed yandere. Kaito being a team-driven hardworker instead of an obnoxious asshole who wants nothing but victory. Ryouhei actually acting upon his lack of experience in archery to catch up to everyone. Nanao being charismatic and having screen-time of his own instead of being pushed to the background while all his personality and lines are used on Seiya. Minato expressing his thoughts and feelings instead of just being an emotionless doormat who never really does anything. We learned more about the characters in just these 20 minutes than the entirety of the first season. It feels like KyoAni has finally taken a step back to look at the material they had in their hands and truly took in what the novel was about and what each character had going on for them. Even the girls’ team was fleshed out in this one, which was honestly a great surprise. I think we’ve gotten from this episode all the little things we didn’t get from S1, such as the way Noa and Yuuna are fangirls of Rika. The way Nanao shines better as support than as main even though he’s so conspicuous. The fact that Kaito is good at soccer and Seiya loves soccer tactics. The way Ryouhei, who doesn’t know much about archery, is used as the eyes of the viewers, and how unpretentiously the lessons he is taught are presented to us as something that we should also keep in mind (for example, that the target is the archer and the archer is the target, and when you’re at the stage of the draw, you’re aiming at your very own self). And the way that Minato is something in this season. We finally see the inner machinations of his mind here aside from his struggles with target panic.
Lastly (and what I consider to be most important) is that the roles of each character and their relationships with one another seem to be in tune with the novel now. Well, okay, almost. Seiya is still being weird around Masaki, but I guess that’s because it’d be too sudden if Seiya started acting the way he acts in canon (y’know, like a normal fucking person). However, the difference is that the narrative is clearly pushing towards Masaki instead of Seiya now, as it should be. Kaito, Nanao and Ryouhei, who used to be just in the background most of the time in S1 are now set perfectly into their own functions and you can tell that they do exist for reasons other than just fill up the team positions. Nanao also seems to be his own person now instead of living through Kaito. Seiya is being shown looking after the whole club, as the competent club president that he is, instead of just Minato. Minato now has proper reactions to everything and doesn’t just completely ignore when Seiya is being a little shit. Masaki is now acting like a true mentor and already in the first episode we have him giving more advice to the boys than the entirety of the first season. But more than anything else, what caught my attention was Shuu. S1 did him really dirty by giving him scary jealous rival vibes and not expanding at all on his relationship with Minato. As I said before, they’re not your usual sports anime rival duo. They really respect and admire each other, are jealous of each other to some extent, but they’re friends first and foremost. They’re also opposites of one another in every way. We didn’t get any of this in S1, and now we’re getting literally all of it at once. What a fucking blessing.
Honestly, the only things I’m concerned about in this season are 1) Kaito and Seiya’s relationship. It’s probably too late to mend it now and make it the way it is in canon, and it also seems the animators are just not interested in doing that, which kinda hurts, but I guess we can’t have it all. And 2) Minato and Masaki’s relationship. I’m pretty sure that we’re not gonna get the same amount of content for them as there is in the novel, and in the off-chance that we do, it’s just not gonna have the same approach or the same quality. Minato and Masaki are mirrors of each other but the anime vehemently refuses to acknowledge this for some reason. They try to treat Masaki as a completely separate entity that has absolutely nothing in common with Minato despite all of the mystic, supernatural and fate-oriented themes that their connection is centered around and the fact that they’ve gone through very similar experiences and hardships in doing archery. But I’d rather believe that it’s a little too early to make a judgement and wait. Truth remains that the characters and their relationships in the anime will never be nearly as good as they are in the original work no matter how hard they try, so I’m just gonna take what I can get.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on this episode. It was one of the very rare instances where I completely approve of anime-original content in an adaptation.
