I was rereading take me home today and it just reminded me how much I miss Muffin and Bear. Which one of their children grows taller than Anthony? Perhaps all of them? Are they tease their Papa for being the smallest Bear now that his Cubs outgrew him?

I imagine that both Neddy and Miles are taller than Anthony by about the time. That they’re 17. Suddenly Anthony has to tilt his chin upwards to look his boys in the eye and it makes him feel a little sad. Because he still remembers when Kate told him she was pregnant, he still remembers the day he met Kate and had no idea that his entire life was about to change.

“When did you get so tall?” Anthony blinks at his sons who have huge logs over their shoulders, dragging it back for firewood.

Neddy blinked at him as he tossed the log down on the pile, tying his long hair back before he tossed an axe to his brother who caught it easily chuckling as his father winced. “I’ve been working on it for about 18 years I’d say, Dad.”

“Don’t throw axes.” Anthony said quickly, “You could cut your brother’s arm off.”

Miles’ laughter boomed through the woods, “He’s too weak for that, Dad.”

“Regardless.” Anthony sighed, “I don’t want to explain to your mother why her little cub’s lost a paw.”

“I’m not sure you can call us cubs anymore.”

And maybe he really couldn’t, looking at them now. They weren’t this little babies he’d brought home from the hospital wearing bear onesies, these were young men. They were strong and confident, gentle, kind. Eager to help him or their mother or anyone they saw struggling. And it made pride dwell in his chest.

“Excuse you,” Kate’s voice cut through the afternoon, “You’re my cubs as long as I say so.”

Neddy grinned at her, “Far more handsome than the poor old Grizzly bear hey mumma?”

Kate rolled her eyes as Neddy wrapped his arms around her, shaking her a little, “I’m very attached to the old bear, I’ll have you know.”
