On The Jukebox: Shania Twain - "Come On Over (Super Deluxe Diamond Edition)"

Featuring guest appearances from Bryan White (on "From This Moment On"), Chris Martin (on "You're Still The One [Live From Las Vegas 2022]"), Alison Krauss and Union Station (on "From This Moment On [Live]" and "I'm Holdin' Onto Love (To Save My Life) [Live]"), Elton John (on "You're Still The One [Live From Miami 1999]") and Backstreet Boys (on "From This Moment On [Live From Miami 1999]") as well as remixes from Cheat Codes, Synchrologic, Frank Walker and Tempo.

This is the biggest deluxe edition re-release of this album from Shania. It includes the full US version of the album (remastered), the full International version of the album (remastered, different track order and arrangements that lean more to pop than country) and a third disc of bonus material.

Some notes:

The International version of the album is interesting for the purposes of comparing how it sounds compared to the US version. I chose the Diamond edition to listen to because I always tend to go for the biggest available deluxe edition but I wouldn't call the International version of the album a necessity.

The Bryan White situation is...weird to me. White was Shania's duet partner on the US version of "From This Moment On"...and then, for reasons I've never felt made a ton of sense, there seemed a concerted effort to erase all trace of the version of the song with him on it. The video is just Shania, the International version of the song has his vocals stripped completely. The song *is* a duet (the Backstreet Boys/Shania version uses the arrangement for the Shania/Bryan version) so the whole attempt to act like the version with Bryan White never existed always felt kind of ugly to me.

Bonus materials: the standard deluxe edition of this album has a bonus track that this edition does not have...and one that I don't understand why it was on the standard deluxe edition to begin with. That track was a live version of "Party Of Two" with Nick Jonas. Which is fine in and of itself...but a baffling inclusion since "Party For Two" is not on "Come On Over" (it was a new track added to her Greatest Hits compilation). Thankfully, it's not on the Diamond edition.

Final note: this album is certified sales wise at 2X Diamond. For those out there who don't know what that means, it means certified sales of *20 million* copies. There's no way of overstating just how *huge* Shania was at the peak of her popularity.

I definitely ship you with Sirius and James. However, Sirius was the first one to notice you. It all started during Christmas when you received a package from your Muggle family. It contained yet another record for your collection – the Diamond Dogs deluxe edition by David Bowie. You were instantlly excited by it, and youre excitment could be percived by others.

Sirius, allthought unfamiliar with the album, instantly recognized Bowie on the cover so he approached you with a playful grin, “Hey sweets, you’re in my Transfiguration class, aren’t you?”

You nodded, “You’re Sirius Black.”

He smiled, glad that you recognized him too, and casually sat next to you, leaning his head on his hand as he looked at you. Initially, you found it a bit strange how comfortable he seemed around you, but his relaxed aura eventually put you at ease.

He shared how he had stayed at school during Christmas to help his friend with some tasks, and how he didn’t really want to go home because of his less-than-pleasant family. You told him about your Muggle family and how they believed it was best for you to stay at school to avoid the Death Eaters. You admitted missing your family and being happy to receive a letter from them.

When the conversation grew somber, he skillfully changed the topic and asked about your album. Excitedly, you shared details about your collection and music preferences. He told you about the cassettes he had received from his cousin Andromeda and promised to make you a mixtape someday. He enjoyed making them for his friends. Your bond only strengthened from that point, and Sirius developed a massive crush on you, growing every time he discovered something new about you. He thought you were absolutely magical, and that, without even thinking about the fact that you were quite literally a witch. 

One day, you were in Sirius' room listening to your records since you didn't want to disturb your roommates. James Potter entered, not noticing you both resting on the floor with your backs against the bed. Assuming he was alone, he started humming along to your favorite song. Just as you were about to speak up, Sirius covered your mouth,  a cheeky grin on his face. Soon, James started his own impromptu concert, singing at the top of his lungs. Eventually, he began dancing and spotted both of you, with Sirius' hand still covering your mouth.

"Padfoot!" He said reproachfully. 

You removed Sirius’ hand from your mouth and gave James an apologetic smile “Hey James!” you said quietly “That was great conert.” 

James turned beet red upon realizing you'd seen his performance "How long did you—"

"—The whole thing," Sirius teased.

James was so distressed at that point the only thing you could think to do to ease the tension was to smile at him and say “Wanna join us?” 

You weren’t sure you’d ever seen a shy James Potter in your life, but here he was, nodding quietly and walking to seat beside you. You were sitting in the middle, with the two boys at your side. And you three just grew closer from then, it was like the boys didn’t want to be away from you. 

While in the beginning you thought Sirius was clingy, he had nothing on James Potter. Whenever they were around you, they were close, in a very literal sense. They always had to be touching you somehow, either by brushing shoulder to shoulder, an arm draped over you, or leaning their heads on your shoulders in the Great Hall, especially Sirius, who always complained about having to wake up early for flying. Those touches slowly became something more: kisses on the cheek, holding your hand, a cheeky hand on your thigh, or backhugs. And while they did sometimes fight for your affection, neither of them seemed bothered by the other pulling you onto their lap or snuggling you closer to them.

One day, you were listening to music in the common room and there was no one else around since you had skipped a class to be there. You were leaning against James’ chest while Sirius had his head resting on your lap; he’d asked you to play with his hair. It was often that you cuddled with the two at the same time, and you loved it, but it also confused you. You somehow mustered up the courage to ask, “What are we?”

“We’re Gryffindors,” James replied at the same time that Sirius said something like “The stars of the show.”

You sighed at their answer and motioned for Sirius to sit up with a light pull on his shoulders. “I meant what are we…” you said, emphasizing the last bit by pointing at the three of you.

James and Sirius exchanged a look. They’d had this conversation before, neither of them willing to give you up, so they settled on sharing. They were both okay with it; in fact, they enjoyed cuddling each other too. “Whatever you want us to be, angel,” Sirius answered earnestly, grabbing one of your hands and intertwining your fingers together.

“If you want us to pull away, or one of us to step back away, we’ll respect your wish, but–” James started.

“–Neither of us wants that,” Sirius finished.

You looked at the two of them. “Neither… neither do I.”

My Top Albums/EPs of 2023

It's that time.

It's a tradition of mine to post my end-of-the-year music list. I used to get music questions + recommendations all the time. This goes back to the days of the Hypster Music Player we used to have on our pages (remember those lol) before the DMCA roll out.

As a heads up, I'm a violinist with a BFA in Music and Audio Production. I'm a timbre listener first 🤷🏽‍♀️. No surprise there. Some people listen to music for the lyrics first, melody first, a catchy hook first, etc. I'm a tone color and texture person as it relates to vocality, instrumentation, and the arrangement/combination of frequencies altogether. (For more on that and how you can confirm/discover what kind of listener you are, this book, which I reviewed, is a go-to.)

Album Review: Prince and the New Power Generation "Diamonds and Pearls" Super Deluxe Edition

One of the coolest things I've gotten to do with this website is cover Prince. You see, he was one of the earliest musicians I got into as a kid with Purple Rain on cassette tape. A few years after his passing in 2016, The Prince Estate and Legacy Recordings announced a definitive Prince catalog project. In 2019, I got to review his 00s reissues (Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth) and his 90s reissues (The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold, Chaos and Disorder, and Emancipation). In 2020, I got to review his early 00s reissues (The Rainbow Children and Up All Nite with Prince: The One Night Alone Collection). No matter what phase I was going through (metal, punk, alt-rock, classic rock), I always checked out whatever Prince was doing. By 1991, Prince was in the prolific space of releasing an album a year and had been for quite some time. Following his Graffiti Bridge album, he formed a new backing band the New Power Generation. Their first album Diamonds and Pearls was released on Oct. 1, 1991. At exactly the moment that Nirvana, grunge and alt-rock exploded, he released this album. But it wasn't an album that was brushed aside and ignored, it did feature a #1 song with "Cream". I picked it up on CD (with that reflector cover) and looking back it was one of his strongest albums of the 90s (his best 90s album was easily The Gold Experience), which was a mixed decade for him. This week Legacy is releasing a special Super Deluxe Edition of the album.

Disc 1 is the original album remastered. There are some masterpieces on this album like "Willing and Able", "Cream" and "Gett Off". But there's also some filler. Now let me clarify, Prince's filler is better than most artists non-filler, but the bar is set rather high with Prince and by this point and time, you expected more. Disc 2 is Singles and Mixes Remastered. This is where the set gets into For Fans Only. The outtakes are awesome, but how many different remixes do you really need of the same song? It doesn't add anything to the album to get the radio edit version, the club version, the a DJ's mix of it. Discs 3, 4 and 5 are Vault Tracks, which is where it gets into shelved tracks from the album's sessions. Many of them are actually quite good, but others are subpar, and then there are different versions (again - the long version, the band version, the different take) of ones that did make it on. Disc 6 and 7 are a live concert Prince and NPG did in January 1992 at Glam Slam, Prince's Minneapolis club. There is also a blu-ray, which contains the 1992 Diamonds and Pearls Video Collection release (a compilation of all of the album's music videos, including Money Don't Matter 2 Night" directed by Spike Lee), the Glam Slam concert (the filmed concert that appears on Discs 6 and 7 in audio form), and some footage of Prince performing at the 1991 Special Olympics. The packaging includes tons of essays, including one from Chuck D.

When this album came out it was one I listened to quite frequently. It was his best album in years, probably since Sign O' The Times. NPG as musicians were quite good, but let's face it, following The Revolution was a very tough act to follow. When I saw The Revolution in 2018, I was reminded of what a tight unit they were when they backed Prince. NPG continued to work with Prince on more albums, but this was their magnum opus. The various versions of the album's songs are interesting...but not really necessary. I think the highlight of this set is actually the Glam Slam concert. I wished that the concert had been released as its own live album and DVD. I was lucky enough to see Prince in 2010 at Madison Square Garden and he is easily one of the greatest performers of all time. Last year's live release Prince and the Revolution Live was my #1 Live Album of 2022. But burying this concert in the album is sort of like burying the lead. There's really not bad Prince releases...but some are very much better than others. If we compare this Deluxe Edition to the Sign O' The Times 8-disc deluxe edition released in 2020, that was a bit much...but the quality of the outtake and concerts were just a little better than this one. But hard to complain when there's some gems buried throughout.

nálam ezzel az albummal kezdődött, vagyis a gett off-fal és a creammel, amiknek a klipjei még a magyar tévében is mentek valamilyen oknál fogva (legalábbis így emlékszem).

azóta is ez maradt a kedvenc albumom tőle, és most kurvára örülök a jó minőségű koncert felvételnek, ami a super deluxe edition mellé jár (bootlegben meg már hetek óta "beszerezhető").

az utóbbi időkben az albumról (és koncertről is) a willing and able a kedvencem. szerintem ez prince egyik csúcsteljesítménye, elképesztően sok zenei kreativitással és utalással. és amiről hajlamos mindenki megfeledkezni, hogy nem csak hangszereken volt zseni, hanem kurva jól tudott énekelni is.
