Song Review: Widespread Panic - “C. Brown” (Live, June 25, 2023)
Looking at Widespread Panic in 2023, it’s obvious many years have gone by since the band’s formation. But listen to WSP ’23, and it’s almost as if time has stood still.
The craggy - and different - faces, grey hair and bald heads belie this, of course. But despite Father Time’s physical toll, that fucker hasn’t yet managed to mess with Panic’s musicianship and sound.
And so it was that the version of “C. Brown” the Panics played June 25 at Red Rocks sounded like in came from the very same band that’s been playing the song for nearly four decades now.
But the band - despite the same name - is different. Some of the players have changed and those who remain have gotten older. Yet Widespread Panic - from a strictly musical standpoint - continue to defy space and time and make music very similar to that they dreamed up when they were pups.
Good then. Good now.
Grade card: Widespread Panic - “C. Brown” (Live - 6/25/23) - B

FABril Day 1 - Crush
G, 2103 words, The triplets crush on Félix.
--
The triplets sat on the Ortizes’ wall, facing the big construction site while they did — as Pepa called it — “boywatching”. A few guys their age and up had been asked to lend a helping hand with the construction of the new church. The town was growing exponentionally in both resources and population and the little chapel that had been hastily built when the Encanto first formed hadn’t sufficed for years.
Naturally, Bruno was looking at boys along with Pepa and Juli, because why wouldn’t he?
The triplets were fourteen and busy as anything with their miracles. They were old enough that Mamá didn’t always have to manage them together anymore. Julieta had been standing with the other merchants at the plaza to give away her little care packages, and Pepa and Bruno joined her on their breaks. Pepa never had much to do this time of the season except be sunny, and Bruno was glad to be away from Ma and her worried hovering for a little while.
(Though he appreciated that she still sat in on the visions. They had been getting weirder and worse and she worried about them, so that’s why it didn’t make Bruno feel too guilty for indulging in her affection a little bit longer. Still, a guy had to have his private moments away from his mami. Albeit with his sisters.)
“Ugh, he doesn’t even know I exist!” Julieta exploded, burying her face into her hands.
Félix had just walked past them, grinning and calling out a casual “hey, Bruno, ladies.” The air around them instantly heated up as Pepa stared with half-lidded eyes, cocking her head ponderously.
It was unanimous to anyone with eyes that Félix was a dreamboat, even if Pepa always feigned disinterest by complaining about how annoying he was. (In later years, this would only inflame her fixation on him.) He was two years older than them and way out of their league. He had stocky arms and a smile that could fight Pepa’s sunrays for attention, and as he carried a wheelbarrow packed with sandbags past them they could clearly see his muscles bulge from the effort.
It took Bruno a belayed second to wiggle his fingers back at him, and then he realized he could totally have hammed it up and pulled out one of his Don Juan-type characters to charm him--
No, too much. Too much, Bruno. That’ll never work.
“What are you talking about?” he said to Julieta, dopey smile still on his face as he watched Félix go.
“Of course he knows who you are!” Pepa added. “Duh, we’re the Madrigals.” She gestured over the three of them because it was obvious. They were the bearers of the miracle. And although Félix rarely got into accidents, he wasn’t exactly a stranger to Julieta’s magic.
Julieta stared abashedly in front of her. “I know that, but- ugh!” She threw her head down between her knees.
It was a bit surprising that she had such strong feelings for him. Bruno suspected she was just playing along, that she wasn’t really into Félix like he and Pepa were. That she just wanted to hang out with her siblings. He didn’t mind the dramatics, though.
Bruno kicked his feet. “Well, if he doesn’t know who you are it’ll leave more chance for us.”
“Oh, I’m not interested.” Pepa flicked her long frizzy hair over her shoulder. “I’m going to ask José out.”
“Which one?”
“Martinez.”
“Wow, that’s a familiar last name. I wonder who you’re trying to make jealous with that.”
She pouted. A little cloud floated over her head for a moment, but it cleared up when her expression did, suddenly struck by a fantasy. “I could have them fight over me.” She clutched her chest. “Oh, wouldn’t that be the talk of the town?”
“Oh, oh, oh!” Bruno chimed in. “A battle of life and death between cousins. José wins your hand, which leaves Félix wounded and in the care of your handsome brother who’s always been more understanding of him and knows what he deserves and gives him twice the attention you would.”
Julieta piped up, “If anyone is going to nurse him back to health, it’s me!”
“Oh, right!” That was a good fantasy too. “Yes…Yes! And that’s the moment he truly notices you! I’m standing in the doorway — I see the two of you right as I’m about to confess my feelings to him, but I realize he’s not in love with me. He’s in love with you. So I nobly walk away and let you guys follow your hearts instead.”
--
But in reality there was no jealousy. There was no battle. There was no kneeling next to a sickbed as either Julieta or Bruno dabbed blood or sweat away from Félix’s forehead and, in this intimacy, dared to kiss his lips with surprise bravery.
A boy arrived in the Encanto like a mirage. The first people who spotted him and his parents had to squint to make sure they didn’t recognize them since everybody knew everybody in an isolated town like theirs, but when it was established that they really must be strangers, they were quickly taken in.
They were refugees like anyone else, but unfamiliar as the trio was, the town didn’t quite trust them yet. Agustín, for example, hadn’t been invited to help out on the cathedral with the other boys until it was well near finished, and when the triplets’ quince came around, Mamá did not allow him to dance with Julieta, who’d asked Bruno — who had become fast friends with Agustín — to invite him as her chaperone. Mamá didn’t like, or rather, didn’t trust, how comically clumsy he was, the exact reason Julieta had become so well acquainted with him (and as a result completely lost eyes for Félix).
Agustín was also tall, slender and friendly, and Bruno wondered why he again liked the same boy his sister liked. It wasn’t like he’d even lost Félix out of his periphery yet.
Wasn’t that greedy of him? That he’d like to maybe reach around their shoulders and hold hands with both boys too. Félix, Pepa, him in the middle, Julieta, Agustín.
“Eh, stupid. Fantasies,” he’d dismiss himself, never quite shaking off that happy ending.
--
Félix danced with Pepa on their quinceañera and that was it for them.
Bruno stood next to Mamá, clutching her black mourning shroud as green overtook his vision and his body went rigid with alarm. Seeing the slender arms of an older Pepa around Félix’s broad waist, moving him however she wanted because he yielded so easily for her; seeing Félix pull up a wide umbrella big enough to shield both of them from Pepa’s stormy cloud as she cried against his shoulder; seeing them kiss.
Mamá quickly and effortlessly disappeared him from the crowd of attendants before anyone could notice his impromptu vision. Sand stirred precariously around his feet, his eyes wide and frightening.
“Querido, sit down.” She placed him on the single chair at the food-bedecked table of the dining room, chairs placed elsewhere in Casita for the party. The music was dampened just enough to put the two of them in a little bubble. Mamá’s hand cupped his cheek. “Are you alright?”
The vision had gone. Bruno slumped, hands hanging between his knees, and he nodded.
“What was it? Your expression- ay, Bruno, why now?” She said this last part more to herself than him, knuckle to her lip as she thought of its significance, or importance thereof, with a deep frown.
“No, it was a good one, Mami,” he stopped her from worrying. He noticed he was still clutching her shroud like a lifeline and let go.
“Are you sure?” Her voice was sharp.
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I can’t tell you about it yet, but you’ll like it. It’s not going to happen for a while.”
Relief washed over her in a full-body shudder. “Oh… Thank you, Brunito.”
“Go back to them, okay?” He waved at the party-goers. “I’m alright. Knock on wood.” He rapped his knuckles three times against the table.
“Gracias a dios, I will.” She knocked as well, then took his face in her hands and kissed his forehead. “Eat something, alright, mijo? Then come back. We’ll talk about your vision tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
She adjusted her shroud and rejoined the party, hands jubilantly up in the air as she cheered for her daughters. Like the upsetting diversion had never happened.
When she was out of sight, Bruno slid off the table, pushing his wrists against his stinging eyes, keeping the tears at bay.
He wasn’t crying. He could never betray Pepa by being jealous of her. If he wanted Félix to come into the dining room, find him in a mess, and caress his tears away with soft sturdy words like he one day would for Pepa, that was just a separate feeling.
It wasn’t until Julieta descended from the courtyard — frantically looking around for her brother whom she knew wasn’t comfortable at big parties, especially when he had nothing to perform, a role to play, and who’d gotten more and more prone to strange meltdowns — that Bruno realized Casita had gently moved him to a more secluded space. Julieta found him tucked behind a flower pot between the corner and a cabinet, protected from stray guests spotting him. Casita moved the pot out of the way for Julieta, who squeezed herself in next to Bruno and asked what was the matter.
Her brows were furrowed and he could tell she was trying to temper her anger that she had to take a break from her own party to comfort him. But she still looked for him.
He laid his head on her shoulder.
“I’m always just going to have you,” he said softly, still kind of hoping it’d be Félix coming to get him. Or even his friend Agustín (who’d been invited, just not to act out the traditions).
“Obviously I’m missing something here or else you wouldn’t say something as mean as that,” Julieta said a tad offended, squeezing his shoulders. The annoyance she had so far kept in check came out sharp.
He slapped his face with his hands. “I always say it wrong…”
“Bruno, just calm down, okay? What happened?” She breathed in through her nose, calming herself. “Did you have a vision?”
She sounded like their mother, but unlike with Mamá he could actually share his feelings with his sister.
“Yeah,” he said. “Félix isn’t going to like me back.”
“Oh…”
He rubbed his eyes, then balled his fists around his knees. “I’m so stupid. Nobody in the Encanto is like me, I know that. I’m just weirdo freak Bruno. But I never even tried with him, you know? And now I’ve ruined it. I’m such a coward.”
“You’re not a coward, Bruno.” She bit her lip and frowned. “And you’re not a freak. You can try with other boys, maybe.”
Bruno thought of Agustín and the way Julieta sometimes looked at him, and decided he really couldn’t. “...I don’t want to make it awkward.”
“But you won’t know until you try-” The two triplets considered that for a second. “Sorry. You could know, of course.”
What was the point of trying if Bruno could toss his sand and burn incense like Mamá showed him and see for himself what he wasn’t brave enough to do? Julieta had a point, but he just wasn’t like that. He wanted to be certain first.
“No, don’t be. I’m just…being difficult again.”
She had no reply to that. “Bruno, can I be honest?”
“Yes. Always.”
“I don’t know how to help you with this.”
“That’s okay,” he said lightly. As if she could pull out clear-cut advice for every situation hidden in her pockets. That’d be the real miracle.
“And…And I really just wanna go back to the party.”
“Yeah, of course.”
“With you.”
The thing about having feelings at the age of fourteen is that, in most cases, those feelings will pass when they aren’t nurtured. On Julieta’s signal — a slight nod towards him and Pepa as they rejoined the dance court — Bruno was reminded of their plan and pulled out his firecrackers, disrupting the careful traditional dancing of their friends and their dance partners until everyone, guests and hosts, was roped into la hora loca craziness. He hugged Félix, he hopped in circles with Agustín. Bruno cried out and danced with his sisters and even goaded Mamá into a wild dance as he shook every bad feeling about the prophecy away.
Because all it should’ve been was exciting.

Kingdom of Without by Andrea Tang Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
When Zhong Ning’er takes the job, she expects a smash-and-grab burglary she’s doing to make rent and help out a friend. What she doesn’t expect: a sad-eyed army boy who dreams of insurrection, a former rebel leader trapped inside a secret lab, a group of aspiring revolutionaries who are first collaborators, then compatriots, and then, perhaps, friends.
But this is Beijing, nearly a hundred and fifty years after General Yuan Shikai successfully declared himself emperor in 1915. His descendants rule the country from their seat in the imperial city, their gendarmerie—the Beiyang Army—run the streets, aided by cyborgs and the Brocade Guard. Walls have risen, dividing the city into districts called Rings—nominally only by geography, but in truth by class. Earthquakes devastate the northern farmlands, crops drown in the southern typhoons, and all over the country people are hooked on a drug they call Complacency.
As a Sixth Ring girl who watched previous uprisings crushed brutally by the court, Ning’er isn’t much of an optimist, and she’s certainly no revolutionary. But that might not be up to her—as the stakes get higher, the time for passivity is quickly running out, and she must decide if she wants to sit idly in her cynicism, or embrace the breathless, terrible possibility of hope.

Cruel Summer~ Rio x Reader
Tumblr media
Day 4 entry... thanks again @aquagirl1978 and @violettduchess! I've really been enjoying this challenge!
Prompt: 4. Sunny Days Pairing: Rio Ortiz x Reader Genre: Angst A/N: I'm sorry Rio :( I needed to mix things up and you ended up drawing the short straw... at least you won't be the only one who has to suffer at my hand... More angst challenge submissions to come.
Tumblr media
These summer days had become unbearable. The bright, cheery sun almost mocking him as Rio stared across the garden, lost in thought. As the days had grown longer, your dresses had grown shorter and lighter in an attempt to keep the heat at bay.
Unfortunately for Rio, this meant he was having the sweetest treat dangled tauntingly in front of him, knowing full well he would never get a taste. Your time together had been sparse recently, the princes monopolizing your time, all vying for your attention which you so willingly gave. You were so sweet, so oblivious to their attempts to win your heart, you genuinely thought that their outings and parties were merely a way for you to get to know them better and assist in your selection of the next king.
The sharp pain in his chest seemed to stab a little deeper each time you would tell him about your adventures, brightly smiling as you recounted your day. How he wished that he were the one to put such a lovely smile on your face. Your eyes glistened so beautifully and the joy in your voice was so clear whenever you talked about them, yet any conversation not centered around the princes seemed hollow in comparison.
Of course, you would never know how he felt. Try as he might to tell you, each time he would profess his love, you would brush it off like a friendly joke. Would there ever be a time when you would come to see how truthful he had been this whole time? If you knew, would that even change anything?
Rio pushed himself out into the garden, exposing himself to the cruel sun as he emerged from the shade of the alcove he had taken temporary refuge in. The blistering heat somehow felt right as he wandered through the blooming roses. Perhaps, if he were lucky, he might just melt away and be freed from the torture of losing you to any of the beasts who had so enraptured you.
Sweat began to build along his skin as he continued his aimless journey. He told himself that as long as you were happy, then he would be happy. But the sentiment was nothing more than an empty attempt to ease his mind, to distract him from how infinitely small the pieces of his shattered heart would be if you ever were to tell him you had fallen for someone. It was inevitable. You were such an amazing person, so deserving of finding your true love, but the chances of you finding that happiness with him were near none.
Soon salty tears joined the sweat running down his face. He choked back quiet sobs, sinking down to the ground in a hidden clearing he found. This seclusion was the only way he would allow himself to let his emotions free. He would never wish for you to see him like this. He couldn’t stand the thought of the pity in your eyes. Pity for how foolish he must be to think he ever had a chance to capture your heart.
He would grant himself time to empty himself of tears so that he could once again put on the mask of the happy-go-lucky butler without a care in the world. The mask that allowed him to pretend that it didn’t hurt to see you laughing with them and showed you the smile you expected to see as you shared your day with him that night.
But for now, he would permit himself to grieve over the achingly slow loss of his one true love.

Tumblr media
Aen: them that the ocean whispers to when it has bad dreams, priest of the old god speedrunning their religious trauma, an actual real life mermaid
Tumblr media
excerpt below the cut
Unfortunately, the cozy little seaside town of Hidden Coves was the only fucking place in the world where the endangered Scarlet Bellied Sea Turtle laid its eggs. Not down the coast in sunny Los Angeles, where the UCLA campus could provide easy access to lab space, equipment, and punk shows. Not up in San Francisco, which at least had a subculture, even if it was kind of a tourist trap. No, the Scarlet Bellied Sea Turtle was a picky motherfucker that insisted on laying its eggs in the kitchiest town on the coast of California.
Belle glowered at the faded sign announcing Come find us Fathoms Below at Fathoms Below Deepsea Adventure Park! One spindly, weatherbeaten wooden roller coaster rose uncertainly above the sandy beach, which Belle immediately vowed never to get on. She could bet that the summer tourists were just great for the sea turtles. Noisy, annoying, disrespectful–they came with their giant SUVs and their litter and their dollar signs for the “local economy” and dug and kicked and poked at endangered wildlife and its precarious habitat.
She was not looking forward to getting to know her new neighbors.
She drove on down Oceanfront Drive, keeping an eye out for the conservation center that was to be her home for the next six or seven months. The main street was lined with cute little shops–an antique shop, an ice cream parlor, a little restaurant with a large, smiling taco above the door–the town even had its own cupcake shop.
Continuing on down the road, she came at last to a sign that read Coves Ocean Conservation and Research Center and took a hard right. A curving drive took her to a small, square building set beside the water on a small cove, with a walkway heading down to a stretch of sandy beach. She parked the U-Haul in front of the door and climbed out, surveying her new home.
She didn't hate it. The beach looked quiet and the water sparkled invitingly. It was a bright turquoise in the bay, dropping off to a dark blue further out. She straightened her shoulders and anchored her combat boots underneath her.
“Time to take names and kick ass,” she muttered to herself under her breath, “time to take names and kick ass–” she stomped up the steps to the front door– “time to take names–”
For just a moment before she pushed open the door, she thought she caught a glimpse of something in the water. It was gone in a moment–was it the flash of a fin? The tip of a tail? She hesitated for a moment, straining her eyes. There shouldn’t be anything that big in the bay–could a shark or a dolphin have gotten caught in the shallow waters? Or was it just a trick of the light?

(Asking with my main blog, but this is supposed to come from my fallout sideblog @eattheglowingmoss. Tumblr let sideblogs send asks.)
BUT as someone who also has a funky GNC courier who also causes Arcade problems (Ame Ortiz - 10 Luck, 3 intelligence my beloved). I have to know how Delilah met Arcade. Did they meet him the regular way in the Old Mormon fort? Did they know each other when they worked for the Followers before getting shot? Do you imagine they met some other way?
Love their design!
ok 1st of all. please know that i lost my whole entire mind when i read this ask thank you SOOOOO much for asking about delilah!!!! it means so much to me :') i really really appreciate the chance to talk about them. i did some art to make my answer a bit less "wall of text" bc i have a LOT of thoughts about Arcade and Del. Delilah actually first heard about Arcade from a friend at the Boneyard Library before they transferred to the vegas branch, since it seemed like they had a lot in common!
Tumblr media
[they changed their name a LOT in their old life. Nobody is sure why. they were going by Sunny when they left boneyard.]
Tumblr media
Julie very enthusiastically told arcade this same info when she heard from HQ that their new transfer was a tech enthusiast.
Unfortunately though... Sunny never made it to the mormon fort. Julie and everyone else waited, but after a few months they were forced to assume that she'd died on her way there. So nobody batted an eye when Delilah strolled in, very enthusiastic to learn about what the Followers were all about!!
They dont specifically remember that they were a follower, but they got a real good feeling when they stepped foot in the mormon fort. (they chose not to examine the source of this feeling. theyre just that kind of person.) they periodically popped in and out of the fort for a few weeks, dumping a pile of medical supplies at Julies feet each time and then poking around for awhile, chatting with all the doctors.
They had an especially good feeling about Arcade. They werent sure why, but when they talked to him, something just felt right for the first time in a long time. They KNEW they had to befriend this guy so they immediately put on their best Cool Guy persona to impress him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this did not work.
they were not deterred though!!! if delilah is anything, theyre stubborn. so they came back later and tried again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it wasn't easy for them to convince him though. backpedaling and explaining that they only said that stuff because they thought itd impress him required a level of vulnerability they're unaccustomed and unwilling to provide. so it took awhile of popping in and saying hi and being genuinely interested in what he was doing.
id like to tell about the time they finally do recruit arcade in its own comic, so ill leave this off here for now :)
again thank you so so much for asking about delilah!!!!!! this ask made my whole week and really encouraged me to draw this scene id been wanting to draw for a long time. (also, Ame seems so cute!!! ill have to doodle him sometime soon hehe)

Song Review: Widespread Panic - “Travelin’ Light” (Live, June 23, 2023)
Though it’s been in the repertoire since the band began more than 35 years ago, “Travelin’ Light” is not a song that Widespread Panic has tired of playing.
The evidence is there in a powerful rendition of the J.J. Cale composition culled from Panic’s June 23 livestream from Red Rocks and released as a standalone. The band puts everything in to the track, with John Bell singing with the same fire he possessed in 1988 and Dave Schools continuing to find new ways to make the bass guitar more than just a rhythm instrument.
The rest of the Panics weren’t yet on board when the original group formed. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t played “Travelin’ Light” something like a gazillion times themselves. Still, one would never know it by the exuberance that goes in to nearly every reading of the heavy number.
Grade card: Widespread Panic - “Travelin’ Light” (Live - 6/23/23) - B+
11/14/23

Top: Silvia Tcherassi Arona Top (USD $320) | Shorts: La DoubleJ Pull-Up Silk Shorts ($495.00) | Sandals: Johanna Ortiz Daal Raffia and Leather Sandals ($395.00) | Handbag: Cult Gaia Lani Flower Straw Tote ($700.00) | Earrings: Bea Bongiasca Two Tone Flower Hoops ($790.00) | Bracelet: Anni Lu Eldorado Beaded Bracelet ($65.00) | Sunglasses: Alaïa Sunglasses ($393)
This week’s winner is the Silvia Tcherassi crop top. Because of its neutral colour and the flower printed on it, I decided to go for a relatively colourful look and lean into the flower theme.
What better way to follow that idea than by adding a pair of multicoloured shorts with flowers printed all over. The moment I saw them, I knew it was the pop of colour this top needed. With such a colourful addition, I decided to go for neutrals for the sandals and the handbag but kept the flower theme with the latter.
For the jewelry, I decided to return to some colours, with the flower earrings being close to the red and pink hues of the shorts, while the bracelet is a rainbow of colours, just like the shorts. Finally, as this felt like the perfect outfit for a sunny summer day, I added a pair of sunglasses whose colour goes with the earrings.
Something I think I never told anyone is that for many of the outfits I create, there’s a sketch of a character that takes shape in my head. For example, for this outfit, I imagine a happy-go-lucky girl doing some errands in her neighbourhood on a hot NYC day.

Slime rancher AU flashforward (I think)
So uh, the response to the compilation of slime rancher AU thoughts was,, huge.
Here’s a brief snapshot of Moon bringing a pair of slimey babies home :p
The Superstar Ranch
Moon stared out at the Celestial Forest, his trusty herder’s cane in hand as Sun cheerfully greeted each pair of slimes in their care, Moon silently counting them in his head. 18, 19… “Oh, I hope they’re just a little late coming home.” He could hear the quiet rasp of Sun wringing his hands behind him as his twin came to stand beside him, the two looking over the land. Moon vented a quiet sigh, pulling his hood up in a fluid motion. “Which pair?” “The Centauri.” He had a feeling it was them again, the Centauri pair were among the Binaries most drawn to Starlight Strand despite the ranchers that frequented the area.
“Be careful, Moony.”
“Always am, any message for the ranchers?”
Moon knew without looking that his brother was pouting from the force of his sigh. “Tell them to be nice to the Binaries, and stop feeding them junk food!”
~~~
Even though the twins were far from the human rancher community, with how often Moon had to venture into the areas accessible to them to retrieve supplies they couldn’t get in the Celestial Forest or round up too-curious Binaries, he knew the land well, sticking to the shadows where his moon slime-blessed cloak kept him hidden. Getting in and out of the ranches was hardly an issue, even the technology of the savvy Ms Miles or Mr Humphries ignored his presence. If it didn’t, well, Moon had his own tricks under his cloak. No, it was avoiding the ranchers themselves which was where the fun lay.
Leaving Mr Ortiz’s farm (though not without stealing some of the ‘junk food’ Sun detested so much, the spicy tofu that Ortiz created proved quite useful whenever Moon ran into the feral slimes that seemed to surround his property), Moon wondered where the Centauri Binary could have possibly ended up this time. He had checked the ranchers in order of suspicion, with Mr Humphries at the top of the list and Ms Miles in second, was there a fourth rancher who had taken an interest in the wandering pair?
The sound of a Vacpack in the Rainbow Fields had Moon slip into the darkness, curiously peeking out from behind a rock formation at the source of the sound. It was a new rancher, one he had never seen around here before now. He needed to check their ranch while they were still out here, but he had no idea where that could possibly b—
A glint of what was undoubtedly glass reflecting moonlight caught his attention from just over the ridge. As he crept closer, it looked more and more like… a massive observatory. That had to be it. Throwing a last glance over his shoulder at the busy little bee sucking up food and plorts in the fields, Moon darted towards the building, intent on bringing the Centauri home, wherever they may have ended up.
~~~
The Centauri sun squeaked gleefully at the sight of him, their adorable face squished up against the forcefield keeping the Binary corralled. Their other half was just behind them, the Centauri moon smiling up at him sheepishly. “There you are.” Moon couldn’t help the relief flooding his tone despite trying to appear stern, his cane hooking under the corral wall and lifting it out of the way. The little sun slime hopped right into his legs, tiny nubby limbs demanding to be picked up. “Spoiled brat.” Moon tutted, though he crouched down to comply anyway, safely tucking the critter into a pouch in his cloak.
The moon slime was a little less enthusiastic, no doubt dreading the scolding they were going to get. “Come on, we should go home before the rancher comes back.” Moon beckoned the little one closer, comfortably situating them next to their sunny counterpart who immediately cuddled close, their quiet chirrs making Moon smile in the shadow of his hood. “Alright, quiet down. Sunny is going to have words for you two, you know.” He reminded them, the feeling of them snuggling closer to his chest the only indication that they had heard him.
Pulling out a slip of paper from a zipped pocket in his cloak, Moon swept his herder’s cane around him in an arc, raising an eye ridge at the silence. So the rancher didn’t have surveillance technology, at least, none that his cane had picked up on. Curious. Well, if they were going to make his getaway that easy, then it was on them if he were to say… take a few crops with him. “ ‘Better luck next time, maybe if you give us better snacks, we’ll stick around longer than your shopping trip.’ What do you two think?” Moon grinned mischievously, letting the Centauri read his little note. The Centauri sun squealed, little nubbins flapping as their moon purred, quietly wiggling in the pouch. “Alright, alright. I’ll be more specific.” Moon chuckled, flipping the small sheet of paper over.
By the time the rancher returned, the only trace of them left in the corral was a note that read ‘Better luck next time, surrender your honey and hens or expect more escapes :3’

Pulp Storytime #4
With this ring, I thee…DEAD?
December 31, 1935, Kochi Japan. Ray “Jonesy” Jones had plans to get rich: one, win the first ever sky-athalon; second, pose as his friend Javid to play photographer at a royal wedding. Plan one went bust immediately, when fashion plate Mary Willard did the athletic section of the foot/plane/motorcycle triathlon in kitten heels. It went even more bust when Jonesey’s teammate, Mexican college-boy detective Mateo Ortiz, tried to run opponents off the track and careened through a cactus patch. The group discovered that the race was crooked, and challenged the cheater Sunny Bounder to an aerial race through the forest section. Through aggressive “counter” cheating, the group was able to win back their money and more, with only a mild risk of dismemberment. Next was the wedding, which involved one of Jones’s old contacts, rich New Zealander Carl Giltrap, and the broke Baroness Kujo Kimiko. They were supposed to be married at midnight, and would’ve, except for a few factors: *One of the wedding guests attached himself to Mateo, showing off a beautiful ring that was secretly property of a deadly Indian cult; *The fact Kimiko didn’t love Carl, and actually loved wedding photographer Yoshi; *That the actual heir, Kujo Shohei, was chained up in the basement, murderously mad at his parents for trying to steal his birthright. The players dealt with these issues, mostly through deceit and chicanery. But MVP was “Hollywood psychic” Madame Valeira. Not only did she spin an amazing web of deceit, convincing Kimiko to return for a super quick 11:58 PM wedding that she administered, and redirecting Shohei’s anger in a way that prevented scandal; she also defeated several cultists, throwing heavy bracelets to knock them off a slippery railing and into the sea. Though battered and bruised, the players made some new allies, and only a few new lifetime enemies.

Shattering Expectations: The Game-Changing Draw in Women's Soccer
Tumblr media
Unpredictability Strikes: The Unexpected Outcome The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup brought forth an unforgettable match between France and Jamaica, who ended the game with an unexpected 0-0 draw. The match, played on a sunny Sunday morning, was deemed an anticipated victory for the fifth-ranked Les Bleus. Nonetheless, the youthful Jamaican squad, fondly known as the Reggae Girlz, had other plans in store. Their solidarity under the brilliant performance of goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer saw them secure their first World Cup points in the team's history. The Weight of the Game: Not Just a Win It's critical to note that this draw was not just a victory for Jamaica; it was a momentous win for women's soccer as a whole. The "World Cup NOW" crew, including Jimmy Conrad, Leslie Osborne, Melissa Ortiz, and Stu Holden, engaged in an insightful discussion about why Jamaica's tie is so critical and how it could potentially transform the sport. As Conrad elucidated, "People need to know that Jamaica was having a tough time getting funds to even come to this tournament, to get enough money to have everything taken care of and to be treated like world-class players that they deserve to be treated as." Their journey to the tournament was marked by struggles, including a GoFundMe campaign to offset some of their costs. Read the full article

Those music industry phonies have it coming in Speedy Ortiz’s new video for ‘You S02.’
Filled with lurid neon and bright, snarky visuals, Sadie Dupuis and co. pay tribute to John Carpenter’s 1988 film They Live, with the frontwoman travelling to the Southern Californian desert to expose a soulless music exec who doesn’t practise what she preaches. It’s revenge best served in a pair of heart-shaped sunnies, in perfect sync with the track’s chaotic, ramshackle vibe (✿ ♥‿♥)
Says Dupuis (via Stereogum):
‘Mostly when I’ve met my musical heroes, they’re kind and principled people. But occasionally someone whose work I love(d) reveals themselves to be anti-union, or anti-“woke,” or some other gear-grinding ugliness. That’s who I wrote “You S02” about, the song’s frenzied guitar and synth solos mirroring the crazymaking intensity wafting off people who act like that.
‘In the TV show You’s second season, the main character moves from New York to LA in hopes of a fresh start, but (spoiler) remains a murdering psychopath. Changing cities won’t make you a hero if you still treat others badly.’
Speedy Ortiz’s upcoming album, Rabbit Rabbit, is out September 1 via Wax Nine. Read the review for their 2018 album Twerp Verse here. You can also read the review for Sad13’s 2020 album, Haunted Painting, here.
