Non-Violent Adventurous TTRPGS
Today is ANZAC day in Aotearoa New Zealand. It seems a very appropriate time to share some games about helping and healing.
Monster Care Squad by Sandy Pug Games
A game about nurturing monsters and healing them of their pain. In the creator's own words, you play a squad of elite veterinarians. I love games that make you feel you're making a positive difference. I hope to play this one some time.
Ngen Mapu by Helena Real and Evil Hat Productions
This game's gorgeous art is what first caught my eye, but what really drew me in was the premise. Playing as manifested spirits from the dawn of time, you must stop people who are causing serious harm to the natural world without hurting them. What happens if you hurt them? Well, you risk becoming a corrupted ngen called a wekufe.
Wanderhome by Jay Dragon of Possum Creek Games
A game of wandering animal folk. Wanderhome has been on my 'to buy' list since its release. This review sums up a lot of why I love it. The grief and hope of a game that takes place in a world recovering from war appeals to me far more than a game about fighting a war. Plus, my favourite part of roleplaying is exploring a character's internal world, and there are so many chances for that here.
Lunar Echoes is a hack of Wanderhome set in a solarpunk future!

ok im feeling brave. im listening to a random guy on yt explain blades in the dark rules so if he can do it i can too... here are my FATE rules explanation vids!
i think they're most helpful as a kind of lecture to listen to while also going through the rulebook, but i do give a bunch of examples for the subjects im talking about in the vids themselves🫡 and FATE is pretty simple imo!

Here’s the secret about D&D 5th Edition...
Honestly it’s not that great.
I’m not saying it’s bad - not at all!  It’s actually a very good system in a lot of ways.  But the thing it’s best at is being fairly simple for new players (while still having enough complexity to feel like a serious game) and so once you’ve played it for a while or you get to higher levels... well...
Look, I ran multiple 5e games, one of which went for 103 sessions.  I’m not a hater.  But I’ve played a LOT of other systems, so I know when something is not working properly.  Combat is BORING in D&D, unless the DM goes to great lengths to make it exciting.  You attack, or eldritch blast, or whatever.  Then you do that again.
I’m not an idiot, I know that’s not literally all that you do.  But it’s what the system encourages.  And that’s not how it has to be.  There are better systems.  Pathfinder 2e is amazing so far (I’m still learning it) if you’re okay with the rules being a little more crunchy.  FATE is a great system if you abhor the crunch.  Savage Worlds is a little in-between and has multiple settings.  There’s Blades in the Dark for a gritty heist kinda game.  There’s Monster of the Week if you want to have a simple game that still has some character growth.
5th edition is good to learn about what role playing games are, but I’m begging you to branch out.  Not just because of this OGL thing, (though that does mean WotC is losing a lot of 3rd party developers and let me tell you the official 5e adventures and source books are... not great) but because different systems are good for different things and different people and chances are there’s one out there that you’ll love SO MUCH MORE.

As long as I’m putting myself out here, I make a living by selling my services as a game master through StartPlaying.Games and I have two new offerings for next month.
First off, there’s a fantasy adventure in Valor: Heroic Roleplaying. Discover why that’s my favorite tactical RPG ever in The Siege of Verdholtz Manor!
Then there’s my swashbuckling, chanbara-inflected space opera using Fate Core, for all your space cowboy and star samurai needs - Fate of the Galaxy!
I’m advertising both as oneshots with the option to expand into a campaign.
I’ve got 18 positive reviews attesting to my patience with new players, ability to roll with crazy PC complications, and evocative world building.
Have yourself a grand biweekly adventure by playing in one of my professional games!

Game Master Helpline Temporary Intro Post!
I often find myself looking for advice with specific problems as a ttrpg game master and I find the scale of a subreddit can sometimes be overwhelming so I thought it might be nice to start a place on tumblr to submit questions for community advice from other GMs! I’m primarily expecting this to attract D&D 5e dungeon mastering questions but I didn’t want to limit it to any one system, especially since I am interested in learning about many more.
I’ll throw in my advice every now and then, but mainly I will post asks as a manner of sharing them with followers/tag viewers, etc. Feel free as well to send me or tag me in posts looking for advice so I can signal boost them!
The blog is a work-in-progress but I’ll be starting right away! Send asks/posts. For asks, I request you follow the guidelines below:
State up front what system you’re running in; don’t assume we’ll be able to infer and try to avoid abbreviations for anything potentially ambiguous/anything that isn’t extremely popular
State up front the category of advice you’re looking for (ex.: mechanic rulings, seeking resources or info, session prep)
Questions about table management are permitted, but try not to veer into specific interpersonal conflict questions/ttrpg “am I the asshole.”
Please reblog if you’re interested in giving and getting advice so we can build up a community!
Last but not least, I may pick up another mod at some point, so shoot me a DM if you’re interested!
–Beck (current solo mod of @gamemasterhelpline)

Top 10 TTRPGs I want to play but haven't yet.
It's time to talk about TTRPGs, in particular, one's I think look cool but haven't got a chance to play yet. I am only going to include games that are out right now because they exist and I could potentially play them like, tonight otherwise. Games being on this list aren't really a sign of quality or not, I'll explain what is drawing me to them but I have no fucking clue if their good or not, haven't played them in in several cases haven't read them.
Tumblr media
Tension
This game is more intense then my standard taste but it also seems incredible. I think the cat and mouse action, the queer longing for someone dangerous and the intense fallout of things no matter what way things go just sounds, ahhh so much fun. Plus I really love TTRPGs I can do 2 player, it's a lot easier to arrange a 1 on 1 session with someone then getting 4 people to all agree to be in a room together for multiple hours.
Tumblr media
Lesbian Werewolves On A Beach
I mean, you put Lesbian in your title and I want to play it. I love beaches, werewolves and lesbians, it's that simple. I don't have a whole lot more to say, it sounds like my kinda thing, that's it, I wanna play it.
Tumblr media
This World Summons Too Many Heroes
Really I just wanna see how other people are doing Isekai TTRPGs. TBH, I have no idea if this one is good, no idea, I skimmed the book but I am really here for the gimmick. I want to read it, study it and then hopefully play it. I really like Isekai type stories and have done Isekai type settings before and will probably do them after for TTRPGs so it's good to see the work others are doing.
Tumblr media
Fate
This is one I've tried to play several times but never got through a session 0. Fate has such a roleplay focused form of play that always captivated me since I first heard of it. The way you get strengths and weaknesses and the way your traits work, it's just, a really exciting system that is so flexible and so well positioned. This system is a staple in the TTRPG space now and unlike a lot of other staples it's one I actually want to play.
Tumblr media
Power Couple
Looks like a cute way to tell fantasy romance stories, I wanna try it. My favorite trope in the world is the power of love conquering all. This us against the world game is just exciting, totally focused on an existing relationship an the way they handle the obstacles ahead of them. I am thrilled at the idea of playing this.
Tumblr media
Only One Bed
This collection of mini games are just really cute and I think it be fun to take a set of characters through an AU for each game. Each games concept is fairly simple but pretty cute. I think this could be a really fun game for a nice shipping session where I take a pair of OCs that date in some roleplay and get to explore their love from a bunch of lenses.
Tumblr media
De:throne
I am all about killing gods, that's basically what I do in any TTRPG. However, a focus on this mechanically just seems like perfect for my taste. I really want to see how this game handles it and if this can be a staple in my play! I really look forward to telling a story focused on god slaying.
Tumblr media
SUEper Powered
This game feels like it just gets me. I want to play a game where we are all really overpowered and it's just like a really cute and fun and emotional and sweet power fantasy. This whole hearted powerful embrace of playing a group of Mary Sue's is just really sweet, so often people try to make a game balanced but there is something great about characters who just kinda fucking rock. From Sailor Moon to grand magicans to Goku, sometimes you just kinda wanna be someone who is the best and I think a group of people who rock is suck a fun fantasy for me.
Tumblr media
The Exceptionals
I am so curious about this games mechanics, after reading it I was really excited about giving it a try but i haven't found the right group or time yet. While I fell out of love with super heroes I can't deny a part of my hear still wants to tell stories about heroes. Masks: A New Generation just isn't for me anymore but this though I think is a tool to tell super hero stories I give a shit about.
The game itself is super well written and is one of those games where I read it and saw the mechanics and since then have been itching to go into character building.
Tumblr media
Cozy Town
While these games aren't in any particular any game designed by Rae Nedjadi is gonna be on the top of my list. Basically any Rae game I haven't played is also in this spot, Cozy Town is just sitting on top because I bought it and it is very cute. While normally I play games based around killing gods and complicated political situations and stuff like that, it be nice to have a game to play that is just like, "Hey, let's live a little utopian life for a minute". I think this really scratches an itch I didn't even know I had until I read it.
-----
If you liked this list and want me to talk about anything else let me know, tell me what your wish list of games you want to play are.

Vitari and Cassandra are my and my bestie's characters for one of the first Fate Core game compaign.
The are both connected with ancient deity that wants to penetrate in material plan and consume all living there.
Cassandra is a young and smug aristocrat, but blood of the deity flows in her veins. Parents raised her in abundance and spoiled her terrible, but then they joined the deity's cult and quite seriously allowed cult members to sacrifice Cassandra and eat her. She didn't agree with this course of affairs and ran away, throving all.
Vitari is a warlock and a leader of a pretty good squad of secret police. He wants to help deity with prenetration in material plan, because he lose everithing that he loved and appreciated. Vitari is a middle-aged elf, fearless and cold-blooded. As Cassandra he can manipulate live flesh and create new terrible forms from simple things and common creatures.

TTRPGs About: Playing Monsters!
Delicious, fulfilling rpgs where you get to play as a monster. I have already done a separate post on vampires, but here's the best of the rest!
Apocalypse Keys by Evil Hat
I often call this one 'my favourite game I have never played.' One day! Play as 'omen class' monsters with the potential to end the world, who struggle against doing so while taking down monsters who actually are causing an apocalypse. Be frightening! Be vulnerable! Bond with the only others who can hope to understand you! It's so many things I love in one beautiful, Powered by the Apocalypse package.
My favourite playbook is The Hungry: a monster which yearns for intimacy but also very much eats people.
No Sacrifice Without Blood by hyphenartist
What if everyone was playing The Hungry? This game is kind of like that. Except you're not trying to save the world- you're just trying to catch a warm (blooded) meal and survive! At least you have each other.
Gods and Monsters by Evil Hat
This game runs on the Fate system. It requires special dice called fudge dice, but that's nothing online dice rollers can't deal with! In Gods and Monsters, players take on the rolls of deities in a young world. They must be careful not to become monsters as they shape the world around them.

I finished a sketch of an character from my steampunk/sci-fi/angels and demons with magic game, Age of Miracles. This is Madeline Vertelle, the girl that my players rescued and end up becoming the adoptive parents of in the sequel to the short one shot I started them on. She's a gifted healer and genuinely just wants to help make the world a better place - despite all of the hardships she had early in life. I decided to revisit her design for the first time in four years since I used her in a RP recently.
