I think that you're never too old or there isn't a specific timetable to follow in going to college or university. Some people go to college straight out of high school but there's nothing wrong with working for a few years and going back once you know what you want it do/have saved up for tuition/are retired and have more time to pursue an education. Education does not need to be a straight line.

Fannish Year Review - 2023

Thank you for the tag @enigmaticxbee !

1. Your main fandom of the year: the x-files, my one and only. really my only fandom for awhile now.

2. Your favorite film this year: barbie was on the only movie i saw in theaters and i loved it! i also really enjoyed smile, thought it was actually scary and sosie bacon was great.

3. Your favorite book this year: hard to pick! i finally read the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid and loved it. malibu rising by the same author was good as well. and i have some questions for you by rebecca makkai, which read like a true crime podcast.

4. Your favorite album or song this year: it came out in 2022, but stick season by noah kahan continues to be on played on repeat.

5. Your favorite tv shows this year: i enjoyed the new seasons of never have i ever, you, black mirror, and the handmaid's tale (not actually new, but the latest season). as for completely new to me - i really liked dopesick, jury duty, and search party!

6. Your favorite tumblr community this year: x-files is the only community i'm a part of lmao.

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: kinda lame but anytime i see new fans of txf on tumblr, i get excited :)

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: the lack of hype around the 30th anniversay. not on tumblr - i loved everyone's gifs and contributions in september. but no mention from david and/or gillian? c'mon.

9. Your tv/movie boyfriend and/or girlfriend of the year: mulder&scully4eva

10. Your biggest squeeze moment of the year: just the fact that people keep writing fics for a 30 year show - i love reading them all. but special shoutouts to gaslight by @sisterspooky1013 and pause by @cecilysass - there were both suspenseful & entertaining stories that sparked a lot of interesting discussion and theories! thank you for posting chapter by chapter, it felt like watching the show.

Yep, pretty much every single one, even if it's just :). If someone takes the time to comment, I try to at least thank them. But I totally understand why other authors don't have the bandwidth. I'm also not a popular author in a juggernaut fandom getting hundreds of comments a week - I set aside a little time a few times a month if needed.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I've written a bunch of apocalyptic fic(lets) where it's heavily implied they die at the end or at least that death is imminent, so probably those.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Baseball Metaphors.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not often. Sometimes people will leave rude comments, but it's rare.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, I believe it's a fascinating way to explore characters.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the wildest one you’ve written?

Yeah, I do. I wrote a Battlestar Galactica/XF crossover once with @dashakay. I wrote a House MD/XF crossover too, and the Welcome to Night Vale crossover mentioned above, and one for The Fall.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know in terms of things that had my name scrubbed off them. I've had other writing stolen or borrowed, and people have uploaded my fics to other sites without permission.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I think so, but I can't remember which one(s).

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Many times! My wife and I used to co-write fic all the time when we were young and silly and wrote hundreds of thousands of words of self-insert universes.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

MSR has lasted the longest besides Han/Leia. Also I strongly ship River/Doctor. The big vibe is "ships that feel queer".

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I mean at this point literally anything. I'd love to finish The FBI's Most Unwanted.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Banter, character voice, poetic prose, ambiance.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I keep hearing about this thing called plot. Never met her, though.

I've written a whole fic in another language, so why not.

thoughts on mulder and scully on the run? what were those first few days like….

awful. like just desperate and awful. i’m still thinking about the moment in @suitablyaggrieved's latest fic where they go to get out of the car on one of the first days and scully instinctively looks to the backseat, which is empty. nearly a year of car seats and bottles and star mobiles, and then nothing. like really, really, nothing. not their families. not their homes. not their jobs. not their possessions. not their child.

the line in that fic: "in their world, in their line of work, something needs to be given to get something in return."

when scully was alone and under attack, she made a decision. she made what she will later refer to as "a difficult sacrifice." later, when choice was taken away, when there was nothing but a verdict, she packed up and grabbed mulder and ran.

they spent two years apart, and scully spends so much of s8 and s9 tearfully repeating "i want to see him so bad." ("no, i want to see him." / "i need to see him." / "i wish i did.")...something needs to be given to get something in return, and sometimes you lose everything.

originally, this story ends in enduring belief, because that's what mulder and scully are about: the final line of the series being "maybe there's hope," the two of them in a motel room in the rain, together, just like the day they met. this time, there's nothing outside to run out and see.

this show is a tragedy, but it isn't unnecessarily cruel. there is always something offered. and in that moment, maybe there is hope. they're holding each other, all that belongs to them. all that they abandoned everything to keep. mulder with his eyes closed (safe for the first time in ages), scully staring straight at him (she can't take her eyes off him, after all that wanting to see him. isn't certain he's real.)

when we next see them six years later, it's a very different tone. for all of i want to believe's faults (and as much as i despise the movie as a whole), it exhibits a kind of aftermath that we are rarely let in on. they've built new lives, sort of. and they have more to their names. they have a house with lamps and artwork and a fish tank. scully has a new career. they are, as she says, "two people who come home at night, to a home."

but they're more haunted than they've ever been. she cannot save anyone, cannot keep anyone safe, and she's desperate to. she tells him that she worries about him, in so much "isolation," then leaves the room and shuts the door. painstakingly ensures the gate is closed when she goes to work in the morning.

this show has a few central messages, and while there is always hope, there is also no closure. no "beyond" the sea. when you shut someone (or yourself) behind a door, there's loss and grief and trauma that stays.

when they first ran, in those first few days, it was awful. fresh grief and old dependence and desperate attachment. that little moment when he stops the car and she's asleep in the passenger's seat (how many years did she nap next to him from town to town) and he kisses her cheek softly before stepping out of the car. everything is precious, everything is fragile, everything is quiet.

they're traveling the country again, as they did together for a decade, hiding instead of seeking. migrating through memories in reverse, every spot on every map a constellation of something they were building, that ended in nothing. they're hopeful, and they're together, but they are never free. ultimately, they end up behind a gate in virginia, no more than 90 minutes from the place they first met.

X-Files Collector's Edition: Fics That Deserve More Comments (Part I)

There isn't enough recognition for these fics in my opinion-- and that's a shame and must be rectified! SO-- I'm pushing this list out ASAP, without the usual aplomb and probably half-cocked; but it's the final results that count~. (At least that's what I tell myself.)

1. Are you named after anyone? My aunt!

2. When was the last time you cried? When I didn't get a callback :D

3. Do you have kids? No, don't want any

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Sometimes but I'm more deadpan than sarcastic

5. What sports do you play/have you played? I swim regularly! I used to do trapeze and silks before the pandemic and really loved it. I also just love going on walks!

6. What's the first thing you notice about other people? Their accents

7. What's your eye colour? Dark brown

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Scary movies honestly, I love the catharsis. I'd rather have a satisfying ending than a necessarily "happy" one.

9. Any special talents? I learn languages pretty quickly!

10. Where were you born? Smalllll town in southeast US

11. What are your hobbies? Video games, D&D, reading, going on walks!

12. Do you have any pets? Pumpkin! Who all of you have seen by now and she is GLORIOUS

13. How tall are you? 1.63m / 5'4"

14. Favorite subject in school? English & German, both of which I majored in.

15. Dream job? Something mindless and vaguely physical that is part-time and pays me enough to keep writing as my career!

Writing Patterns

Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!

Moments (this is a series of individual ficlets so I'm gonna go with the first sentence of the most recently posted installment)

“It’s really not that complicated, Scully.” She sighed and leaned her head back against his couch, using the movement primarily as an excuse to not have to look directly at him. “But Mulder, what you’re proposing… there’s no telling what effect it will have on our friendship.”

2. Driftwood Lullaby

The wind howled as the rain rattled against the windows, raising an incredible racket and making sleep impossible.

3. Secret Ingredient

“Careful.” Pike’s arm looped around Janeway’s shoulders to steady her knife-holding hand. His breath tickled the top of her head as he spoke. “You want to chop the celery, not your fingers.”

4. Revenant

Scully was absolutely, devastatingly certain she couldn’t experience a worse waking nightmare than finding Mulder dead. Then he came back to life.

5. Sweet Kisses

It was him, right? It had to be. Agent Scully is already in love. Who else could Padgett have been talking about?

7. A Most Owlish Conundrum

“Hey, Scully?” “Hmm?” “How many owls would you need to see in a day before you would think something is wrong?”

8. Beyond Antares

I pull up to the bar right as it’s closing, watching all of the drunken customers stagger out. There’s always a risk to your upholstery— not to mention your sense of smell— when you let someone who’s had too much to drink into your cab, but the entertainment they provide is usually worth it.

9. I Had A Feeling

“Can you sense anything, Counselor?” O’Brien asked her. Troi took a deep breath as she turned her senses inward before expanding her mind outward through the psionic null space that surrounded them, searching for the small yet bright thought-sparks that constituted her crewmates.

Mulder couldn’t explain it. When he saw the light in the sky, something inside him just said here, this is the place.
