Okay, I guess this is an apology for my rant on Niina which somehow ended up attracting the attention of people like @lesbiampire. First things first, yes, I understand the notion that Niina was groomed by her acting teacher. That should be pretty obvious to anyone watching the show. I mean, that whole “My crotch is so freakin’ itchy” line in the second episode was all her acting teacher’s idea to pretend to be a sex worker with an STD she was happy to pass on. I understand that she was harassed by men and boys for a duration of her life. Most of her motivations can be easily explained away as her being emotionally stunted from all the shit that she had to go through.

My one problem with this, though, is that to me, the show does a very bad job at conveying this. I like the show for many reasons such as how relatable it portrays that shifting towards adulthood (even though I didn’t have it as bad as most of the characters on the show but I digress), and the characters’ journey through it is interesting enough to reflect on. But with Niina, however, her overall goals is pretty hard to decipher. At most, I get the impression that sex isn’t truly what she’s after as much as she thought. Rather, she what she truly desired was a healthy relationship where she wouldn’t be ogled at or seen as nothing more than a symbol of lust. If the series concludes with her realizing that, that’d be fine. But then where her motivations become complicated is when she decides to throw her friendship with Kazusa to the side and chase after Izumi.

Firstly, what was there to really spark it? Sure, they did have some good chemistry especially in episodes 8 & 9 and a few similar interests, but it’s made clear at first that Niina was working to get Izumi and Kazusa together. She even gets mad at Kazusa once because she was worried that she’d try to spirit Izumi away. Her saying that she’d make the tension worse for both parties sounded bad, but she ultimately was working in Kazusa’s best interests. But now, she becomes nothing more than a hypocrite who uses her sexuality as a gambit of getting Izumi, which spits in the face of her previous displeasure at being the center of attention to some creeps.

Yes, yes, yes. I understand full well that part of it had to do with her teacher’s probing her to do it, but I feel that people like lesbiampire were giving Niina too much leeway to the extent that she should not be held accountable for her actions. I feel her going behind Kazusa’s back to be horrid because she previously was helping Izumi realize that Kazusa liked him and then gave him advice on how to confess to her. Those moments suggested that she truly valued Kazusa’s happiness. To me, it comes off now as her being selfish because if her true motivations is to have a happy relationship -- one that she doesn’t feel as if she was only valued for her appearance -- then she was denying her best friend of the same experience. I feel that the excuse that she was groomed when she was young can go so far.

As for Hitoha and Milo-sensei...yes, I get that the ending of episode 9 looks bad, but I stopped feeling bad for her because of her continuing attempts at trying to have sex with her teacher, and just being an overall brat doing it. Really, her side plot is one of the most uncomfortable parts of the show. I might make a rant on Momoko later, maybe after the tenth episode this Friday, but I feel that I should mainly apologize on my comments on Niina. I fully understand where she was coming from, and because I never experienced that kind of thing I’m not really qualified to discuss that sort of topic. But my one issue is that the anime doesn’t do that great of a job at conveying this as one of the reasons behind Niina’s behavior. Her side plot with her acting teacher feels really, really tacked on. But that’s squarely my opinion, and I can see why you’d disagree with me.
