3 anime starring women if you're sick of all the regular tropes
Here are a few favorites of mine if you want to watch a couple of cool young women who act like real people.
Skip and Loafer
Tumblr media
Look, I know this is a super recent one, but I wholeheartedly recommend it beyond that fact that the main character is a super awesome girl who doesn't fall into those romcom tropes. The designs are adorable, and there's no sign of fanservice anywhere. The other girls in the series are also well fleshed-out and don't fall into demeaning or boring tropes.
Tumblr media
Just look how adorable everyone is! And just to add to that, their skirts actually look like uniform skirts, so not all of them are mid-thigh length. This is such a cute series, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
Tumblr media
I'm guessing this one has been recommended over and over, but it really is incredible! I love how the art looks rougher and not overly cutesy, and I love how the girls actually sound like girls with varying voices! Besides that, if you're someone who loves anime and animation, this show will spark that sense of joy and wonder like it did in me.
O Maidens in Your Savage Season
Tumblr media
While I can't claim to have seen every teen-targeted show in existence, this is probably one of the only shows - let alone the only anime - I've seen that portrays what those aspects of puberty are like for a teen girl in a realistic and non-exploitative way. It even includes the experiences of a young lesbian, which shows rarely do. In general, this is such a great series that definitely can bring back a few cringey memories, but is incredibly in its characters and tackling of real issues.
~~~
Those are just the three that are in my head right now! if you haven't seen one or more of these, I really recommend giving them a watch! Skip and Loafer is still currently airing, but Eizouken and O Maidens are available on Crunchyroll and Hidive respectively.
Women's History Month Themed Anime of the Day: Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.
Tumblr media
Alt Title: O Maidens in Your Savage Season
Released: 2019
This is an anime about a group of girls. They are in high school thinking about the normal things maidens think about, school, boys and reading aloud sex scenes from literature. Because their club is, er, literature focused, or rather focused on one type of literature, they have difficulty finding an advisor for their club. Because their focused nature makes the school nervous, the school threatens to disband the club. Naturally, the girls fight against this oppression and they do it in the most unexpected way possible.
Most realistic part of O Maidens in Your Savage Season is that Momoko's lesbian sexual awakening is playing Street Fighter and seeing Chun-Li.
finished it! sumn light, lots of thoughts but none at the same time. sonezaki, her bf, and jujo are my favorite characters. i feel like the ending was solid. for whatever reason the teacher being a pedophile was not talked about as a serious issue throughout the whole comic but other than that i would say the manga as a whole was chill. i wish they would’ve given nina a more rounded end to her sexual desires instead of just making it seem like she gave up/got over it but i’m not taking the manga too seriously so it’s fine. 7/10, great art style👍🏽
Expansion on Hongo and Milo’s relationship after high school. Pairing: Hongo/Milo  Anime: ‘O Maiden in Your Savage Season’
“Would you cut it out?”
Hongo gargles the mouthwash again. “I’m not bothering you. If I were it’d look like this.” She throws her head back, filling the room with a retching sound when the mouthwash inevitably shoots down the wrong pipe. What is she to do but wipe her mouth with one of the pure white towels dawning the name Amagi in bold aquamarine.
Rika winces. “You’re so undignified.” The rollers in her hair say the same about her, walking throughout the house and even outside to gather her belongings for their stay at her family’s estate. Estate being a very liberal word to describe the family home, though reflective to the looks Momoko gave when she realized Rika had been holding back on them.
“You know dignity?” Hongo coughs into her hand and smirks. “ Introduce us one day.”
“Hongo, you know it’s hard to tell when you’re joking.” Rika scratches the back of her neck. “I—I’m sorry if this—makes you lonely.” Her voice waivers, afraid to pursue the opening she’d been waiting for. Her feet felt cold against the bathroom floor, although not as cold as the look Hongo gives her.
“What?”
“Sonoe says I shouldn’t care about—about flaunting my relationship.” Rika exhales. “However this is different—you’re lonely.”
“I’m alone,” it’s Hongo’s turn to scoff.  “Never lonely.”
It’s less of a grievance now as it is an annoyingly embarrassing blimp of her teen years. If their third year didn’t do anything to awaken the revelation she needed, her senior year of college wouldn’t either. If the wedding hadn’t quelled the symphony in her heart, then words—no matter how powerful—damn sure wouldn’t either.
(Not unless they came from him.)
(But Hongo made a promise and she intends to abide by it. The only string attached.)
“Hongo—”
“Rika,” Sugawara sways against the doorframe, fingers gently lowering her into their conversation. “Your mother’s asking where you want the flowers?”
“On the nightstand near my side of the bed! Honestly!” Rika says, exasperated. She turns and glares at Hongo. “We’re not done here.”
Hongo hears the quickening stomps down stairs and decides to tune out the yelling. This proves difficult under the eyes of a very persistent third party.
“I happen to give award-winning advice,” Sugawara says matter-of-factly. “You look like you need some dick.”
“Piss off.”
Anime lesbians that not enough people are talking about
Suruga Kanbaru (Monogatari Series)
Tumblr media
The entire Monogatari series is quite problematic and very hard to get into, which is why not enough people talk about Kanbaru. But to my experience, at least, she's one of the more accurately written lesbian characters I've seen. She's someone who's felt isolation because of her sexuality, and who's felt that heartbreak of falling in love with a close friend. She has a discomfort with her sexuality (which I found more clear in the novels), but once she opens up to someone about it, she really talks about it. Her sexuality also isn't rigid, and she explores new avenues of it. To me, she just felt like a very real older teen girl trying to figure out herself.
Momoko Sudo (O Maidens in your Savage Season)
Tumblr media
I feel as O Maidens as a whole isn't talked about as much as it should be, and Momoko is talked about even less. Momoko's character really captures the experience of having these feelings that don't match what you're being told is normal or what you see around you. And because of this, she can't put words to it. She's part of a literature club and reads a lot of romance, but she's never represented in any of it. I love Momoko because she feels like a real young teen girl trying to put words to all of these feelings she's having.
Kureha Tsubaki (Yurikuma Arashi)
Tumblr media
Yurikuma Arashi is often overlooked due to its presentation (which actually ties into the commentary it's giving), and is the least appreciated of Ikuhara's works. But despite the show being quite messy, I can't help but love Kureha. The show as a whole represents how lesbian women are viewed and portrayed in Japanese society and media, and Kureha's character represents internalized homophobia, and the fear of being "openly gay". The whole series is fantastical in nature, but Kureha's feelings and story remain very true to many people's experiences, including my own.
~~~
I just wanted to share a few characters I connected with and I don't see being talked about enough. I wholeheartedly recommend checking out Yurikuma Arashi and O Maidens in your Savage Season, as they're excellent shows. As for Monogatari... I'd tread lightly and look at the content warnings! But it's still a great series.
General note: Yes, Monogatari is a horribly problematic series. It has a lot that I seriously do not like, but if you're able to get through the bad there's a whole lot of good, such as Kanbaru. So warning!

I feel so sorry for Izumi, who ends up looking and sounding like an asshole when he was just being honest. He loves a girl, happens to feel sexually attracted to another (and one who was frankly kinda predatory, or at the very least very pushy towards him). Sure, he was a bit insensitive in his wording and hurt Kazua for sure, but everyone has wanted him to be honest and the second he is, everybody jumped to his throat (including the audience, judging by most reviews I've read)

started watching O Maidens in Your Savage Season.
I already like it a lot, and it seems like the already good OST will only get better throughout the Episodes. Had an eye on it since it aired, I wish I would’ve started it sooner, although now is probably a good time considering everything.
