Like, I got the "son" one. Like Johnson. Son of John. Jackson. Son of Jack. Even Odinson. Son of Odin. I assume that kind of surname is origined from waaaaay back in time when people would refer to others by like, their father or main man in the family or something

But Mc? McDonald, McBride, McGraw, McGonnagal? Bro what does that mean

Do you, or anyone actually, know where/when the '-bowl' sufix started being used in Fandom? Because I can't find any kind of origin, and surprisingly Fanlore doesn't have a article about it (as far as I checked maybe I didn't search well?). I just found and know that it's used for kinda old and relatively new fandoms, thanks to a two-year-old Reddit post.

For anyone who doesn't get/know about the '-bowl' sufix: is basically an All × One thing. For example, if you encounter 'Dekubowl' this means that Deku, the character, is shipped with everyone or that at least everyone else have a crush with Deku.

I can only think of the 'Super Bowl' (just as one comment in that Reddit post suggest) for its origin, but when we talk about Fandom culture we never know. It could have originated from anything no-related to the Super Bowl, LOL.

Ooh, interesting. I've never heard of this in my life, and I have no idea what a -bowl suffix is supposed to mean, even if I guess it has to do with the super bowl.

It's not surprising Fanlore doesn't have this if it's coming from BNHA or somewhere similar. Fanlore is fantastic on the history of Western "Media Fandom", zines, K/S, etc. It's much weaker in areas that OTW early adopters haven't spent as much time in.

You should write the -bowl article yourself!

I went into AO3's tag search and looked for 'bowl'. I found 1311 tags, 90 of them canonicals.

I'm seeing a ton of references to the Super Bowl, dust bowl AUs, pet play with pet food bowls, Dream in the fishbowl, unending uses like "I'm crying into my bowl of cereal as I write this", "bowl of honey nut feelios", "bowl of pornflakes", "me shaking the food bowl of sbi wilbur-centric angst: come get y'all's juice", etc., and plenty of references to YOI katusdon bowls. Lots of fandoms and episodes have 'bowl' in their titles.

Zeroing in on more related things, I'm seeing BNHA over and over and not much else...

EXCEPT!

Fruit bowls!

I see scattered references to "let's add him into that whole fruit bowl" and "the whole fruit bowl is here" and so on. Some of them are crack fic where everyone is a banana, but a lot of them seem to be a metaphor for "everything together".

Okay, I just spent far too much time trying to categorize tags. Out of the 'bowl' ones, about a third appear to be this kind of sense (counting by number of tags, not number of works).

Game of Thrones has a bunch, but they refer (as far as I know) to which characters will hypothetically kill each other and emerge victorious, not to group shipping.

Some tags I found, like 'edelbowl' sounded more like a group ship than an X/everyone. I also found a scattering of tags that were like 'all of them in a bowl together', which is probably related.

But mainly, what I found is that this is from BNHA and it's recent.

The other fandoms where I found it were:

Demon Slayer, Dr. STONE, Naruto, South Park, Fire Emblem, Genshin, HP, Lego Ninjago, My Next Life as a Villainess, She-Ra, Teen Wolf, Tower of God, VLD, A3! (Video Game), Assassination Classroom, Avatar, Batman, Black Clover - Tabata Yuki, Bleach, Blue Lock (Manga), BTS, Bungou Stray Dogs , Dangan Ronpa, Danny Phantom, Detective Conan, Dragon Age, Durarara!!, Fate/Grand Order, How to Train Your Dragon, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Kaiju No. 8 (Manga), LEGO Monkie Kid, Osomatsu-san, Ouran High School Host Club, Percy Jackson, SK8 the Infinity, Soul Eater, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, Tokyo Revengers, Virtual Streamer Animated Characters, Warcraft, Xenoblade Chronicles 2

That's giving me a very distinctive picture of a fan who's probably in their 20s or 30s, mostly like anime and some video games, and is not the type that edits Fanlore.

There's nothing actually old here: it's recent anime and stuff that is still a megafandom, like Naruto.

I'm seeing a scattering of 'dekubowl' from 2017 and then other character tags taking off in like 2019. This is definitely a recent trend in terminology, at least on AO3.

I didn't comment on it and lost the post, but damn, what was up with the one post were a woman of rwandan descent was criticizing the tras use of "genocide" and she was making a criticism based on numbers and someone came to her notes saying that "by that logic femicide and infanticide are words that shouldn't be used either because there are so few numbers as well, idiot!"

And I'm like...

femicide and infanticide don't use that sufix to refer to genocide... femicide is not a concept of numbers...

The "cide" in the word refers to the "act of killing", regardless of number, and "geno" means "caste" or "familly", and is used to mean a population of a specific group. Genocide means "the killing of a population", that's why we use it for large numbers of people and why it is related to hate crimes related to racism and xenophobia.

Femicide on the other hand has NOTHING to do with numbers, but about who the individual victim is. "Fem" is refering to woman or female, and "cide" refering to "the act of killing", and it's used to mean "the act of killing a woman for the sake of being a woman".

Like, the original post and the following discussion centered on how the systemic murdering of thousands of peoples during the genocides of Rwanda or the Holocaust are much different to wathever tras talk about when they use it, but I was so baffled that someone was trying to argue semantics in such and idiotic way that I couldn't stop thinking about it.

mm . theres a lot of stuff like that, But i'm gonna share with you two dumbfuckeries that i hate!! first is!. i Think its called declension? its fucking stupid. its. the word changes based on the context of the sentence. there are seven declensions. theyre "Who, what? without Who, what? To who, what? i see who, what? to call out to who, what? about who, what? with who, what?" this all sounds simple, yea? it is! until you get a sentence like. fucking. god. i dont remember the exact wording but it was like "He saw a tree in a painting". so you'd think the 'tree' will be a fucking. the first declension, yea? "who, what?" because its "where is who, what?" yea? so its gonna be the fucking declension?? you agree with me?? good. well my czech teacher somehow fucking. it was an adjective so fuck me i guess. it WASNT!!!! a fucking adjective!!!

and then the other is fucking. each noun (and adjectives too but those are easy, theerse only two) has a 'model', which depends on its 'gender'. theres three groups, each have four basic models and then the masc gender is just a huge fuck up. theres 'alive' and 'nonalive' models, theres EXTRA models that just!! its!!:( Im sorry you came here to learn something new and im simply complaining. im gonna give you a true fun fact

a thing that you can do in czech is build up on words! you can add a milion sufixes and prefixes and then a thousand Other things that i dont know the terms of. so. the longest czech word is nejneobhospodařovávatelnějšími. haha jk i lied they can get longer, nejzdevětadevadesáteronásobitelnějšími. maybe even longer i dont know. this is fun! this makes it so that each of my cats has a thousand nicknames:3 gonna list out fousek's for you

fousek - fous, fousánek, fousínek, fousáč, fousín, fufík, foufík, fufán, fufínek, fousáček n possibly more that i might be forgetting! dolochovs are. theres way more of them . arthur has the least ,he has like, "artur, arturínek, arťounek, arturák" are the main ones i use! theres More possibilites for diminutives of his name but. tbh i dont like them hehe its My cat and I get to choose his diminutives!!!)

Sí, en conjunt es diuen "paraulotes" (el sufix -ota és com l'italià -accia, per fer la paraula gran i bruta). "Bestemmia" en català es diu "renec" o "blasfèmia".
