lets talk about KOSA

i havent seen any posts about it on my dash, and i think this is really important because it puts Tumblr as well as queer/minority creators on this platform at risk. since i have a lot of queer mutuals, i want to make sure you all are informed.

KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) is being presented to Congress this upcoming month. its being presented as a way to "protect teens/children and their mental health online by regulating content online". however, it puts queer/minority creators and their content at risk of being totally censored. sites like TikTok, Ao3/Wattpad, Tumblr, and essentially anything that gives queer people a significant platform online is at risk of being deleted/wiped or censored into oblivion. under the guise of "kids mental health" this act would heavily restrict queer people and their voices online.

what can you do?

this linktree provides resources to help you take action and protect queer voices online from KOSA. please take the time to do what you can. if you spend any amount of time on Tumblr and value any of the queer voices you have access to on this platform, take action.

Put plain text on your posts.

You're limiting who can view your posts.

Plain text is needed for:

1. Those who are affected by eyestrain and are visually impaired. Colored text, fancy fonts, they all make these harder for people to read,

and

2. Those who use screenreaders. Fancy symbols, especially ones from other languages, and tyoing quirks fuck screenreaders up. They can change the language, start spouting weird nonsense, or just flat out break.

There are also people who straight up get overwhelmed by all of this without being affected by these problems. Me, for example, I can read all typing quirks just fine but it's still very overwhelming.

Also, big text? There are people who already have their text on their phone set to big because they can't read, and they need plain text for big text.

If you can't provide plain text, you could always

A. ask plaintextpro (or another accessibility blog) for help

B. not format your text at all

I honestly don’t get why people get so pressed at people having complex identities, or using loads of labels, or using neo pronouns. Especially other people in the lgbtq community

Like your all for people being themself and freedom from oppression until it’s that?? Come on, why does it matter? Just because you have a simple identity, use one label exactly, and use the pronouns that were made up a few centuries ago does not mean that you can shit on other people for not doing that. They’ve discovered themself, plain as you have. What you are doing is exactly what the queerphobes are doing, and there is frankly no place for you in the queer community.

Queerphobes are going to be queerphobic no matter if you use bunny/bunnyself pronouns, so shut up and stop contributing to the bigotry and oppression

And it’s not like people who use neo’s, lots of labels or have complex identities are trying to force them on you. If anything, you are trying to force your labels and identities on them. So yeah, we are within our rights to tell you to shut the hell up and grow a spine
