Scotland: Storm Gerrit left 1,500 homes without power
Storm Gerrit has left more than 1,500 homes without power in Scotland.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said it had restored power to more than 46,000 homes without electricity due to the storm, with those in the North East and Shetland Islands worst affected. They said social assistance vans would be distributing hot food and drink to affected customers and the remaining homes should be reconnected on Friday. Its operations director, Andy Smith, said:
This has been a difficult couple of days for the communities affected and I’m grateful to them for their patience and support as our teams work extremely hard to restore power.
National Grid UK said 36,000 homes were left without power in Ceredigion in west Wales on Thursday after being struck by lightning.

Some scenes from Storm Gerrit hitting Scotland 🏴 A number of flood alerts and warnings are in place across Scotland as Storm Gerrit brings heavy rain and snow ⛄️❄️
The yellow weather warning covers almost all of Scotland and other parts of the UK.
Sunset as Storm Gerrit races across Ireland - Crepuscular rays at sunset.
Here, a flooded landscape with water levels rising rapidly, covering ground passable just the day before as sunset approaches along with crepuscular rays in the colourful but ominous sky.
Storm Gerrit has brought severe winds, flooding and downed trees across Ireland as well as snow across parts of Scotland.
It's one of my favourite places, not just for photography but also just to stand, sit and experience all the weather that the west of Ireland can hit you with.
Is there any site where we can check the weather for a specific day in London? Marte and that moronic Impostor are trying to say that it was stormy on Christmas Day and Harry wouldn't have swam then.
Yes - see link below.
London on Christmas Day was a relatively balmy 57f/14c. Calm and cloudy. Storm Gerrit didn't hit until the early morning of the 27th December.
If you guys know Cat, you know she LOVES an unavoidable disruption to her meticulously planned itinerary! But I suppose there are worse places to be stuck than London.
After deciding to book a hotel as close to the epicenter of London tourism as possible, we minded the gap and took the tube to Hyde Park. The weather was exactly as you'd imagine London in the winter, but we ventured through rain and crowded streets of Carnaby over to a very popular and busy Indian restaurant, Dishoom. Undiscouraged by the hour long queue, we waited outside in the drizzle and made friends with the doorman.
We were finally seated inside around 4pm, so we delved into what would be our lunch and dinner. We had some delicious and bottomless house chai, fried okra, black Daal, ruby chicken and whatever the chef's special was. Even for combining the two meals, our eyes were bigger than our stomach could handle, and whatever we were able to finish up was ultimately the dagger that ruined any plans of us making it past 7:30 awake.
It was dark by the time we left the restaurant and the rain had picked up, but we took the long way back to the hotel making detours to the Green Park, Buckingham Palace, and the Victoria Memorial.
We made it back to the hotel and jetlag and the Indian food caught up to us. We were both snoring seconds after hitting the pillow with plans dashed to read a new book and watch the Chelsea game.
We're currently back at London Heathrow hoping for an on time departure to get into Lisbon a day late and more than a few euros short. Security knocked us both for a loop... An unsuspecting security agent forced us to check our bags. We obliged him with the ignorant American tourist schtick. My TSA pre-check conditioning had me holding up the line as literally every single item was taken out of my bag and resent through the X-ray machine. And Cat, still cursing my namesake for the chain reaction that led to her bag being checked, forgot to pull her film out before sending it through the X-ray. ☹️
Stay tuned to see if the conspicuously named Storm Gerrit further wreaks havoc on our American privilege!
Roche Braziliano Roche Braziliano was a Dutch pirate born in the town of Groningen. His pirate career lasted from 1654 until his disappearance around 1671. He was first made famous in Alexandre Exquemelin's 1678 book The Buccaneers of America; Exquemelin did not know Braziliano's real name, but historians have found he was probably born as Gerrit Gerritszoon and that he and his parents moved to Dutch-controlled Brazil.[2] He is known as "Roche Braziliano", which in English translates to "Rock the Brazilian", due to his long exile in Brazil. Pirate career Roche Braziliano was a notoriously cruel buccaneer who operated out of Port Royal, Jamaica. He was a privateer in Bahia, Brazil, before moving to Port Royal in 1654. He led a mutiny and adopted the life of a buccaneer. On his first adventure he captured a ship of immense value and brought it back safely to Jamaica. He eventually was caught and sent to Spain, but he escaped with threats of vengeance from his followers. He soon resumed his criminal career, purchasing a new ship from fellow pirate François l'Olonnais and later sailing in company with Sir Henry Morgan and Joseph Bradley among others. Braziliano's first mate Yellows eventually became a captain in his own right, sailing with Braziliano, Morgan, and others in raids against the Spanish. Atrocities Drunken and debauched, Braziliano would threaten to shoot anyone who did not drink with him. He roasted alive two Spanish farmers on wooden spits after they refused to hand over their pigs. He treated his Spanish prisoners barbarously, typically cutting off their limbs or roasting them alive over a fire. Fate After 1671, Braziliano was never seen or heard from again. To this day, nobody knows what became of the Dutch pirate. Whether he (and his vessel and men) were lost at sea in a brutal storm, was secretly captured, or possibly retired and lived the rest of his life in anonymity is a matter of debate.
