Spencer (2021)

If you still think of Kristen Stewart as that bad actress from the Twilight films, you won’t even recognize her in Spencer. She gives a stunning performance in a film full of complicated emotions.

Inspired by real people, this fictional tale begins on December 24th, 1992. Diana, Princess of Wales (Stewart) upsets the British royal family by arriving at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate alone. As she attempts to abide by the exhausting Christmas traditions imposed upon her by the family’s long history, she struggles with her mental state and uncertain future.

All little girls dream of becoming princesses. Many films have shown us that being a big deal isn’t what you dream it is but none quite like this. Diana’s husband, Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) is having an affair. Going through a marital crisis on a normal day would be difficult but Diana's circumstances make it particularly hard. Ideally, Christmas is a joyous occasion whose sanctity shouldn't be spoiled by bad news but there’s no joy here. This holiday in Norfolk is cold and uncaring. It’s all about what outfits you’re scheduled to wear, how little of a fuss you can make, how few pictures the paparazzi snap of you. The royal family pretend like they aren’t people; like they just happen to live among. Diana knows first-hand that princes aren’t inherently wonderful, that "royal" means nothing.

The extent of the family's self-importance and cruelty is illustrated via the giant portrait of King Henry VIII hung up like he's the patron saint of happy marriages. Henry VIII grew tired of his second wife and had her executed. Everyone knows that, but he's still up there. As such, Diana feels a kinship with Anne Boleyn (Amy Manson), whose “ghost” "haunts" the building. What happens to her if she tries to leave the family?

With few opportunities to confide in anyone, Diana has few ways to express the unhappiness she feels out loud. This is where Kristen Stewart’s performance comes in. She’s so good at communicating the uncertainty, stress, sadness, outrage, dissatisfaction, and despair Diana feels. Then, there are these little scenes where we get to see her smile. The "Diana, Princess of Wales" disappears and the "Diana Spencer" comes back. The moments of joy with her children (played by Jack Nielen and Freddie Spry) are particularly emotional. Diana knows what it’s like to grow up normal. Her children do not. Her past, their future, the uncertainty of her marriage, her place in the royal family are all converging. It feels like it’s too much to handle. She imagines what it would be like to just quit everything. If you didn’t “get” why Prince Harry (The real person) decided to step away from the royal family, why the idea of kings and queens is out of date in 2021, this film shows you.

Spencer isn’t satisfied with a traditional exploration of its protagonist. Director Pablo Larrain uses dreams/hallucinations and quiet shots to show us what the character feels rather than spell it out. It’s a good thing Kristen Stewart (who is sure to get all sorts of nominations and awards) is up to the task. For her alone, the film is worth seeing. Maguire, member of the Irish Republican Army, sings the song, "The Boys of the Old Brigade" to Thomas before leaving the pub. At the time, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom although there was tension between the Irish Fenians and the United Kingdom. One big misconception is that everyone in Ireland hated the British. On Easter Sunday 1916, there was an uprising in Dublin and other parts of the country where members of the IRA who were fighting for the independence of Ireland, captured various places in Dublin, famously the post office, and declared the Irish nation free from British subjugation. The British took Irish captives, so the uprising was actually a failure. However, the harsh treatment of the Irish meant that the people in Ireland became very anti British. The Irish population became increasingly hostile and it's from that point on that the Irish war of independence starts: from January of 1919 until 1922. The IRA were fighting a guerrilla war against the British, especially against their Black and Tans, a pro-British paramilitary group in Ireland. The officer that Tommy has to shoot was a one of them. They were known for being incredibly ruthless towards the native Irish.

The whole island isn't part of one country, six northern counties remained part of the United Kingdom because the British monarchs planted English Scots and Welsh Protestants in the Northeast to subjugate the various Gallic resistance there. Which is why they were called Ulster and were Pro British and unionist.

In the in the second season of Peaky Blinders this becomes an issue because some of the IRA accepted the treaty that these six counties would go to the UK and some of them didn't. This was actually one of the main causes for the Irish Civil War which was right after the Irish earned their independence. The IRA started fighting among themselves of pro-treaty and anti-treaty.

Peaky Blinders Season 6: What to expect

Now that the fifth season of Peaky Blinders is all wrapped up, fans are excitedly looking forward to knowing anything about the next instalment. The hit British crime drama TV series has been among the most well-known shows around the globe. Ever since its release back in 2013, the series has been loved by people all around the world. Written and created by Steven Knight, the series takes place in Birmingham, England.

The fictional gang is somewhat based on the real-life 19th-century youth gang by the same name. The cast packs some impressive names with Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, and Paul Anderson. The fifth instalment, directed by Anthony Byrne, recently finished up, and we are here to provide everything we know about the sixth season.

The fifth season showed Shelby and company trying to make up for the loss faced in the 1929 crash of the stock market known as Black Tuesday. The gang is forced to form a partnership with fascist Oswald Mosley, played by Sam Claflin. There was a real-life historical authoritarian leader on whom the character of Oswald is based on.

The fifth season showcases Tommy suffering from his late wife’s memories Grace played by Annabelle Wallis. Tommy continuously plots to retain his crown, and the season ends on a dark note. An uncertain future lies ahead in the 1930s Manchester, which nobody knows about.

·         Season 6 Renewal

The show is considered to be a Netflix Original because of prior U.S. sale distribution. However, it is BBC who co-produces the series and shows green light for new additions. There has not been such a sign from them; however, Knight has stated earlier that he expects seven seasons out of Peaky Blinders.

·         Release Date

If we look at the previous production history of Peaky Blinders, then it takes them 17 to 20 months to renew the series altogether. Now that the season wrapped up on September 22, 2019, the sixth season can be expected around February or May 2021. The BBC has never released a new instalment before May, so you can expect to see a May release on BBC, while a July one for Netflix.

·         Season 6 Plot

As Tommy fails to assassinate Mosley in the fifth season, he entertains the thought he may never be able to defeat the smart fascist. He feels a little paranoid and seems to believe that time is indeed changing. He starts seeing Grace’s vision and presses a pistol against his head after screaming.

Tommy can undoubtedly trust his familial loyalty, but it is quite evident that the old ways of business are fading. This can be interpreted via Michael’s proposal to refinish the structure of the family business. His friends and family may likely question Tommy’s leadership and even sanity. Tommy would have to decide whether he wants to be Tommy Shelby, the leader of Peaky Blinders, or Mr. Jones, a dead man’s identity, for good business, as new threats arise with new enemies. It will be interesting to see how Tommy manages to sustain his power in season 6.

Locked Down (2021)

Locked Down is a strange mix of genres. If you know which ones, you’ll probably find that it only does what you want it to half of the time. I walked in cold so to me, this unromantic-comedy evolved into something completely unexpected. Even if you aren't pleasantly surprised like I was, you'll enjoy the chemistry between the leads.

As the COVID-10 pandemic hits London, parliament orders everyone to stay home. Bad news for Paxton Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Linda (Anne Hathaway), who have just decided to split up. With nowhere to go, they are forced to stay and deal with each other.

Conceived, written, shot, and directed entirely mid-pandemic, Locked Down is a movie for right now. From the arguments between Paxton and Linda, you can tell things were disintegrating for some time already. Paxton used to be a bad boy, riding his motorcycle with his gal in the back. He was dangerous that’s what Linda liked about him. Unfortunately, they've grown up since then and Paxton’s criminal record - from an assault 10 years ago - has caused him constant grief. He’s stuck in a lousy job and for a neurotic mess like him, it might as well be a death sentence. Linda doesn’t admit it but you can tell she’s unhappy despite her success. As the CEO of a fashion company, she makes plenty of money but her position is unfulfilling, the people she reports to are idiots, the company is underhanded and unethical.

Over and over, Paxton complains that life has given him no breaks… and then a huge opportunity falls into his lap. Previously, the film was focused almost entirely on dialogue. Now, Locked Down is about this one thing that could change it all for Linda and Paxton. Is it too good to be true? Will they go for it? If they do, will it be the thing that saves their relationship? What if the love they no longer feel for each other causes this chance to vanish? You know there’s no way it will be as easy as it seems… but couldn’t it be? Just this one time? It’s like everything that’s happened to them has been building up to this one moment. If that’s not a sign that it’ll work out, I don’t know what is. Who knows? it might even be the catalyst to bring them back together, which would be terrific. The actors have such great chemistry.

I wouldn’t call Locked Down a romantic comedy, though it does have several funny moments throughout. All of the video calls between Ben Kingsley and Chiwetel Ejiofor cracked me up. It isn’t exactly romantic either, as the couple aren’t in love anymore. Though there are points when they’re recalling what things were like before that are sweet. It’s definitely a heist, which I bet you totally didn’t see coming. I didn’t either. (May 13, 2021)
