Another WIP Wednesday already! Here’s a little bit from the ranch AU I’m writing for the @steter-bang :)
Gerard smiles, and it makes Peter shudder. He’s never seen a more unpleasant smile in his life.
“Now, be reasonable, Peter. Times are tough. We’re all just waiting on a fire to get too close, the animals to get sick, the winter to be too long. One of these days, you could be begging me to take this ranch off your hands.”
Peter saunters closer. “Even if every one of my cows died, my land was charred black, and we were literally the last two ranchers on the planet, I wouldn’t sell this ranch to you,” he says evenly.
“Now you listen to me,” Argent starts, but then he stops, eyes narrowing at something over Peter’s shoulder.
Peter looks around, and there’s Stiles, standing by the corner of the house, looking like he’d like to turn right around and head back the way he came.
“Sorry,” Stiles says, “Didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“Figures you’d wash up here,” Argent snarls at him. “It would take a worthless operation like this to take you on board.”
“That’s a lot of sailor metaphors for a place as landlocked as this,” Stiles replies.

How I Lost My Shit: Like with my last chaptered Steter fic, I thought for sure it'd be shorter than it ended up being. I got 3 chapters done by the deadline for the Secret Santa event. I even got 2 more chapters done at the beginning of this year. And then I dropped the ball. Because me getting something finished without a deadline looming? It's less likely than you think! 🙈
How I Finished My Shit: Because it worked so well last year, I signed up for the WIP Big Bang again. But because there was so much time before posting would begin, my brain went "You know what's much cooler than writing? Starting your nth crocheting project! And reading lots and lots of books. What could go wrong?"
Well, what could go wrong was this: Starting to work on the fic again so late that the first participants of the event had already started posting before I opened my document to reread what I already had. Whoops?
And because I apparently don't learn from past mistakes, I needed 2 extensions again. Because I didn't account for the ECS (the Exploding Chapter Syndrome). Meaning, I innocently believed I'd be able to maintain my previously established average word count per chapter.
News flash: Of course I didn't. 🙄
But I did it! And this year, I only needed one half-nighter instead of two all-nighters to get it done. (I won't mention that I stayed 14k under last year's fic. I'll choose to imagine I got a little better at time management, instead. 😇)

He stands there, debating, while Reddick dies.
The thing seems to smile, rubbery lips pulling up to show those terrible fangs again. It huffs, a laugh perhaps. Then it pulls Reddick in half like he’s made of newspaper. There’s a wet, slopping noise and then the two pieces of Reddick fall aside. Unger is given a similar treatment and then, finally, the thing looks at Stiles.
Stiles is forced, then, to grapple with his sanity. It is not a man in a suit. It is not Bigfoot. It is not a hallucination.
“What are you?” Stiles manages to ask.
“I am the Omega. The last one.”
And it leaves as it came, silent like the night.

I technically have a massive list of WIPs and Prompts I am constantly working from. I pick the ideas when they feel happy in my brain for "free time" writing - I actually meant to work on the office sex AU for the month of december but got whacked upside the head with Addabge Dmaddiage. UMS was my FIRST "long fic" ever so I am... feeling really, really invigorated.
in 2021 I climbed out of my writing hole where I hadn't written seriously in over a decade. That year, I wrote and shared 22,418 words by myself, and wrote half of a 69,599 (incomplete, part 1) role-play fic with a friend. At the start of 2022, I watched teen wolf for the first time because @sinnabon-cosplay is a menace and can't be stopped. It lit an absolute FIRE beneath me and I lost all control of my life. I started writing and drawing with a wholly renewed fury. I started doing way more events and wrote and posted 40,247 words. At the end of the year, I thought to myself - wow, wouldn't it be cool if i doubled my word count again? 80k? haha, that probably won't happen though. I'll be excited if I write and post 60k.
YALL. I wrote and posted 60k in ONE FIC. I wrote and posted over 120k?????? that's INSANE to me. I haven't had that much drive to create since I was in high school.
Teen Wolf is like... fixing my brain chemistry. I feel so invigorated.
Despite some setbacks with some REALLY unfortunate Sterek fans at the start of my experience here nearly tanking my creative drive, I've managed to stay on track without totally losing my love for the ship because of some rotten eggs. Shoutout to all my homies keeping the space worth hanging around in. I appreciate yall so much <3

1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Technically 50 (I think) because one of them is in an anonymous collection so AO3 is telling me 49. I’m considering putting some more earlier works as anonymous so that number might change soon.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

I’m terrible about doing this, so I’m very sporadic about it, but every comment means so much to me! I just see it and if I don’t respond immediately, they just pile up and then I never get to it?
100% getting better at replying with my ongoing WIP, What Large Hands You Have (The Better to Embrace You With) [Steter, M, 14.7k so far], since I’m posting as I write and the encouragement means SO much!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Half Past One [Drarry, M, 2.5k] which was a horror fic (my one and only one) that I wrote for a Wheel of Drarry mini exchange. There’s MCD. And gore.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I almost never not write happy endings, BUT I’m going to go with Pinocchio [Neville/Harry, E, 3.9k] because it’s crack-y, fun, and Harry gets off a ton of times. (Mostly unintentionally).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I’ve had a couple rude-ish comments? Someone said that it would be better if it were longer, which was kind of ??? It was one of my first works and the mods reached out to me about it and they were super supportive and kind. (This is also the fic that is now anonymous, for unrelated reasons.)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I’ve written some PWPs. A little of everything, really… and a fair number of my longer works include some sex scenes. I probably read more kinky content than I write (beyond the watersports fics because apparently I have multiple?), but yeah. Pro-smut here.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Nope. I’ve read a few, but it’s mostly not my thing.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes! And I only found out because the person didn’t realize that it was stealing to repost on Wattpad and then apologized and asked how I felt about it…
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
My tango fic, The Cabeceo [Drarry, E, 1.9k], was translated into Spanish by @stargazing-enby last year for HD Owl Post. Which was such an amazing and wonderful gift to receive, especially because *tango*. I definitely feel like I’ve grown a lot as a writer since I first wrote it, but it’s very near and dear to me and having a translation (which I can read!) even more so.
If it gives anyone any ideas… I can read Portuguese and Spanish!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Co-written? No. I’ve done art for various people before and participated in several big bangs/reverse big bangs as both an author and an artist. (ETA: 100% have co-written multiple fics no idea how I forgot those when I first answered)
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Flintwood. (And yes, I’ve had full on spreads in my journal dedicated to Flintwood.) Don’t ask me why, but those are my athletic rivals to lovers absolute hands down favorite.
For Teen Wolf, I started in Steter (so it remains my #1) and one of my all-time top comfort reads is a Steter fic, This Time Around by Green (and someone else who no longer is associated with the work), which I received a bound copy of last year as part of the Renegade Bookbinding Exchange.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
“Green Glows and Ginger Greens” is a Flintwood WIP that I have 20k written of, edited and posted chapter one and it’s been… 2 years. I hope to get back to it (and my other unposted Flintwood hanahaki I’ve been talking about for about as long), but it’s just… not happened.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Idea generation, maybe? I think I tend to be really good at coming up with ideas and starting writing projects that have the potential to be really interesting. I love kind of crack-y ideas, and I’ve been trying to be better at actually delving into those instead of going “this is too weird, no one will read it.” (Example: I wrote a fic from a bathroom’s POV and it still makes me laugh.)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I tend to come up with ideas that spiral out of control, but I’m terrible at finishing things so I procrastinate and then it gets rushed and not as strong as it could be.
Also not using betas that often because of said procrastination. And feeling awkward about it because I never leave enough time for editing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I love it, especially when it’s a language I speak and am like “Yes! This adds some cultural context”, etc. But also, such an important thing to get people to double check that before just throwing it in.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Back when I was a wee bb in high school? Either Protector of the Small or Harry Potter. As an adult? Also Harry Potter.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Completed on AO3? Herbology_Neville and DragonKeeperCW [Neville/Charlie, E, 11k] which was the fic I worked on whenever I was procrastinating on other fics. I’ve always wanted to go back to that universe and just haven’t had a chance, but… Neville and Charlie are adorable and I love them.
I’m also loving the fic I’m posting now, as mentioned it’s What Large Hands You Have (The Better To Embrace You With), which was for Steter Bang because it really is reflective a lot of me as a person. Otherwise, I really loved the Green Glows/Snuggling, Smoothies, and Sons-in-Law universe (just need to finish both of those…)

Pan tilted his head and joined Peter, turning to follow the boy’s gaze. He gaped at the three beings below them, sitting like royalty on the smooth obsidian rocks. “Sirens?” he whispered, shocked.
“In a sense, yes. They prefer the term mermaids. However, they are just as deadly and much prettier.”

Pan fell in love with his new home. Neverland was beautiful and he relished in all the serenity. There were so many colors, such a glorious thing to see after hatching to find a barren ash colored wasteland instead of the meadow of helianthus it should’ve been.
He came to Neverland with nothing but after a week had more than he could ever possibly use. Peter offered to teach him how to make clothes if he wanted to. Pan was delighted to learn and now had one set of clothes for each day of the week. He still went barefoot but would now wear a small tunic made from one of Peter’s favorite tunics, a little belt to tie it made from leather and a tiny pair of pants made from the same material as Peter’s tights. His favorites to wear were the red tunic, black belt and black pants since they matched his wings. He also learned to make a small quilt for his feather bed. It was fun to learn, and he grew closer with Peter during that time.
A few months later, Peter led him to the Numquam Grotto, also known as the Never Grotto. It stole Pan’s breath, his amber eyes wide with awe and wonder. The moon was high and full in the sky as they whizzed through the cavernous space. With giggles like bells, Pan trailed his fingers and toes through the water, using some of his magic to flick water at Peter.
The Never Boy laughed and shot ahead before doubling back and letting out a crow. Pan blushed as his stomach flipped a little at the sound. The Never Boy sounded so joyous. The Sióg was starting to realize that he had formed an attachment to Peter. He wasn’t sure what to make of it but at the boy’s beckoning and giant grin, he pushed the thought off for now.
“Pan! Come here. I want you to meet some people.”
Pan tilted his head and joined Peter, turning to follow the boy’s gaze. He gaped at the three beings below them, sitting like royalty on the smooth obsidian rocks. “Sirens?” he whispered, shocked.
“In a sense, yes. They prefer the term mermaids. However, they are just as deadly and much prettier.”
“Oh. Well, I suppose they are pretty. The way they look I’m sure aided them in drawing people in. Then, the deadly part comes into play?” Pan flushed nervously as Peter’s eyes found his own. “They’re your friends?”
“Yep!” Peter said, popping the p. “But, they’re harmless to me and you, okay?”
Pan sent him a nervous smile. “Promise?”
Peter grinned and held out his pinky. “I promise.”
With a scrunched up nose, Pan wrapped his small pale hand around Peter’s pinkie and shook it. “Good.” They stared at each other for a bit, until a splash of water echoed around the cavern, drawing their attention.
“A dolphin!” Pan exclaimed in a breathless whisper of excitement, his wings shivering and fluttering. “It’s gorgeous.” His eyes were glued to the way the creature swam, like the goddess had taught her to dance along with the ocean’s rhythm. Pan was unaware of the admiring gaze of the Never Boy who never got tired of seeing the wonder on his friend’s face.
After the dolphin had disappeared again, Peter gently nudged the Sióg. “Wanna know their names?”
“Uh yes! Absolutely. Um. I mean assuming they don’t mind?”
“Not at all. So first the one there with blue shells and blue scales with hair like golden sun rays is named Nymeria but I call her Nym or Ria. Second is the raven haired woman there with emerald shells and emerald scales. Her name is Rhymise but I call her Rhys or Ry. Then, last but not least, the one there with lavender shells, lavender scales and hair like a dragon’s fire is Philomena but I call her Mena.”
“Woah,” Pan said softly. “I thought merfolk were super secret or at least isolated. How come they’re not?”
Peter glanced at Pan and then shrugged one shoulder, seemingly nonchalant but his cheeks pinked as he said, “There was a terrible hurricane one year, stretched from the water’s surface to the bottom of the ocean. They were the only ones to survive. I offered them a haven. Here they aren’t disturbed by anyone. Here they don’t have to be afraid.”
Pan’s heart began to race as he admired the blush on Peter’s cheeks, his wings shivering with pride. He had to push away the stray thought that had been plaguing his mind lately. He couldn’t push it away completely though and so, in his mind, only to himself he would agree that Peter would be the perfect maité for him, or for any Sióg really but such things were the things of dreams, not reality.
“Oh, fair maidens of Poseidon, I have returned. Where’s my hello, Nym, Rhys, and Mena?”
The three mermaids whipped their heads in Peter’s direction and trilled happily as they leapt into the water and swam toward them. “Hello, Peter!” they sang out, their teeth sharp, and deadly and yet hauntingly beautiful. “We missed you!”
Pan’s stomach clenched at the sight of utter adoration in their eyes but when he looked at Peter, sure he’d find the same adoration in his, he was shocked to find the Never Boy completely oblivious. In a way, Pan was glad, because if Peter recognized the look in their eyes, surely he’d recognize the same look in Pan’s eyes.
Unaware of his new friend’s internal struggles, Peter regaled the maids with tales of his adventures, and Pan found himself just as enraptured by them as the maids were.
When it came time to leave, Pan was speechless as the maids each offered him a small shell. It was their approval of him, and he tried not to get emotional when he promised he’d return to play soon.
Peter kept close to him that night, sensing his friend’s emotions and Pan was grateful for the closeness, but even more grateful that the Never Boy didn’t ask what was wrong.
As Peter slipped into dreamland, Pan, curled up in his meadowlark feather bed, remained awake. It was nearly impossible to fall asleep, for the emotional toll he experienced with the maids made his heart hurt too much to so easily greet the sandman.
When he had cradled those small shells and had met the gazes of the maids, Pan couldn’t help that he desperately missed his parents. So, confident that the Never Boy was finally asleep, Pan began to cry, the sound of snare drums echoing in the small house as he finally began to grieve. He wept for his parents, wept the hatchlings that never got to live, wept the helianthus blossoms that never bloomed, the flora, the fauna and the goddess herself, for all who were marked by the fire in the valley. Only then, after hours had passed and the sun began to rise, did Pan finally succumb to sleep.

But because there was so much time before posting would begin, my brain went “You know what’s much cooler than writing? Starting your nth crocheting project! And reading lots and lots of books. What could go wrong?”Well, what could go wrong was this: Starting to work on the fic again so late that the first participants of the event had already started posting before I opened my document to reread what I already had. Whoops?And because I apparently don’t learn from past mistakes, I needed 2 extensions again. Because I didn’t account for the ECS (the Exploding Chapter Syndrome). Meaning, I innocently believed I’d be able to maintain my previously established average word count per chapter.News flash: Of course I didn’t. 🙄But I did it! And this year, I only needed one half-nighter instead of two all-nighters to get it done. (I won’t mention that I stayed 14k under last year’s fic. I’ll choose to imagine I got a little better at time management, instead. 😇)

So i absolutely see your point about dorothea, but I think i get lost on that a bit because of the high school themes, and at 28 I have so much trouble reading high school aus, they make me feel gross? even college aus are starting to get that way, so I'm mainly writing grad/law school if i play with academia.

Willow also works for Hux, I feel like? It's an au, obviously, but I'm sure you've all fuckin noticed I only write modern AUs Im an absolute SLUT for them.
I just feel like "They count me out time and time again," and "show me the places were the others gave you scars" are pARTICULARLY good lines for them?
Gold rush is also perfect for any AU were you have Hux feeling self conscious? It's a song that's entirely about not wanting to fall in love, because you think it's not realistic? Like, it's about dreaming how good a love could be and then denying yourself it?
Tolerate it is great for a break up au from Kylo's perspective, absolutely, especially if you make kylo young enough that their age difference is proportional enough to matter, to change the dynamic of their relationship?
