Day 20: Steller's Sea Ape
(This might be a bit of a sad one. I just wasn't sure what to do for a while until I remembered Atlantean reincarnation. I figured the sea ape would make for a good spirit but what kind? Well, the kids have to go somewhere. Maybe Ruin did something to my head making me have dead kids on my mind. Being a fnaf fan tends to do that to you) Sadly, even a perfect society is not immune to tragedy. Despite the utopia that Atlantis is, some things are just inevitable. We have already touched upon death plenty of times this chapter, but death is not just for the old or mature. For even children can fall prey to the reaper’s hand with no hope of preventing it. However, these children of course get a light at the end of the tunnel. Plenty of children were chosen by the Leviathans in the past to be reincarnated into great spirits, warriors and revelers. But some just simply wanted to play. That’s when they say Swift had his idea. He decided to create a new kind of spirit for the children to become. Something silly and playful so they could enjoy their afterlife satisfying their curiosity and living a happy existence without fear. So he created what humans call the Sea Ape. A mix between cetacean and fish so that it could fit any type of Atlantean, these “apes” soon filled the halls of the Leviathan’s palace with laughter and joy. Of course they would not just be limited to the palace. They could explore wherever they wished in the seas. The ocean became the world's grandest playground for them. This was not meant to last however. One day one of these came across a ship full of humans. Consumed by curiosity it showed itself to them, observing for a very long time. Then it decided to see if they wanted to play, showing off by juggling a seaweed stalk. That’s when the human that would soon come to coin its name shot at the poor ape. It was confused and a little frightened, even more so when the human fired again and nicked a bit of skin the second time, causing it to run away in fear. Swift was terrified and a little angry. They say storms grew harsher around the human’s home country. That’s when Swift decided the apes would remain in the palace, only going out when supervised. Yet their happiness has never been compromised. As we know it, under the care of Finley they still remain joyous. So I believe that Atlanteans can rest easy knowing that even one of the greatest personal tragedies that can occur will still lead to a happy existence for the ones lost. (Excerpt from The Water Cycle: Atlantis and Reincarnation)

Days Eighteen through Twenty two.
I've been behind on these for a few days and probably the future of this challenge due to personal reasons. For me its kinda hard finding motivation to draw after work due to being tired and needing rest; but I'm trying my best to keep up to date with these prompts, hopefully have all of them done by the end of the month.
Anyways here's all the links to each article about the listed cryptids.

The butterflies in ep 8 🦋
I don't care if yall say I'm reaching with this but media is subjective and I want to credit the animators for creating a visual experience that so heavily derives from the sentiment of the script even where it doesn't necessarily require it. Thereby telling a story through the visual narrative itself.
Tumblr media
This is one of many scenes where a lot is being said without words. It is among the other stellers scenes like the hallucinogen apes in Fowler's castle, Mizu's ritualistic sword forge scene, the interiors of Kaji's brothel and the sea cliffside scene with ensuing artist dialog between Eiji and Mizu.
Tumblr media
This scene appears in ep 8 Finale, the "auspicious event" as Shindo calls it while he entertains the Shogun as a distraction from Fowler's forward army. It is established that women in Blue Eye Samurai are represented through imagery of winged creatures. It is a harbinger of the incoming freedom that Akemi and Mizu are fighting towards.
Tumblr media
At the cusp of their ritualistic ascent towards their goal, their new beginning hailed by a burst of blue butterflies. From the shot hovering over Shindo, we only see the top of their wings. Blue, the colour family of Mizu's eyes. The specie of butterfly is Sasakia charonda, the national butterfly of Japan, characteristic for it's inky blue wings, blackened at the edges with red markings.
Tumblr media
We pan to Shindo's view above him, a shifting tapestry of vermillion. Not blue. The butterflies boast a different colour on the underside of their ink coloured wings. A boisterous orange. A symbol of Akemi's fire. It is interesting to me that the underside of the average S charonda isn't vivid at all. It is muted variations of greys and browns to better blend into it's surroundings with it's wings closed. So having the butterflies have a bright underside was a creative decision.
To represent both women
Both their freedoms.
Both their victories.

This 4-page comic about the “sea ape” discovered by GW Steller was written and drawn in 2014 for my original SEA OF TIME concept.
I am not unhappy with this episode which is now a “deleted scene” as it doesn’t quite fit the tone or narrative of SEA OF TIME.
So “The Sea Ape” now has a home — along with other comics and drawings and WIPs as well as regular updates and original art — at my Patreon where $5/mo gives you access to all of the above PLUS a copy of my new Patreon-only mini-comic!There’s also exclusive news for subscribers about my new project in 2023 which will transform everything about my comics going forward. So get on board! Patreon is a BIG part of how I am able to keep working as a cartoonist. Subscribers make my life’s work possible every day of every month. I would love to have you as a supporter. Sea doggo! It’s #CryptidInJuly2023 Day 20: Steller’s Sea Ape. This one didn’t go as well as some of the others, but I think that’s the nature of the beast. It’s a CHALLENGE. Don’t give up when something turns out wonky. Enjoy the experience. ☺️ But also DOGGO.
Seascapes and skies kick my butt often, but I think struggling means I’m working toward getting better at what I’m struggling with. One of my nephews is 7, and he got upset when he didn’t know how to draw something new. I sat down with him and told him about all the things I struggle with and how struggling is part of learning. Challenging himself was a good thing. He thought about it, and his attitude turned toward doing the work and having fun, which warmed my heart. So I’m going to listen to my own advice today. ☺️

WEEK 50: STELLER'S SEA APE
Who wants more Crypt-A-Long? Too bad, here it is anyway. Here we have another square in my ongoing effort to knit a blanket like the annual Geek-A-Long from Lattes and Llamas, but featuring the monsters, cryptids, and aliens of the world! You can visit the website for an overall pattern and some of their terrific yarn, and come back here every week for new cryptid charts.

Georg Wilhelm Steller was an eighteenth century naturalist who really liked naming rare sea animals after himself. We've got Steller's Sea Cow, which is extinct, Steller's Sea Eagle, which is endangered, and here is Steller's Sea Ape, which nobody has ever seen again. He claimed to have sighted it near the Shumagin Islands off Alaska, and describe a seal-like creature with a bushy mustache and no front flippers. Apparently it like to juggle seaweed. I have no idea how a creature with no front limbs can juggle, but here he is, seaweed and all!

The Steller’s Sea Ape was only ever spotted once, by the explorer Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741 off the coast of Alaska. Steller claimed the animal to be about 5 feet long. He claimed that it had the head of a dog with pointed ears, long whiskers and the tail of a shark. The fur covering its body was a deep grey but the stomach was a reddish-white color. It is suggested that the Sea Ape was merely a misidentified fur seal (pictured above) but that theory has never been verified.

Cryptid & Creature Drawtober Day 17—Steller’s Sea Ape
In 1741, around the Shumagin Islands in Alaska, German biologist Georg Steller observed a creature in the water near his ship. It was seal-like in shape with a dog-like head and a tail fin shaped like a shark. He claimed the creature was very playful and inquisitive about the ship and its occupants. Steller’s encounter went on for a couple of hours until he decided to try and collect the creature for study—he shot at it twice, missing both times, and the animal swam away.
While likely just a misidentified seal, similar creatures have been reported since Steller’s sighting. And it’s probably best to keep your distance just in case they hold grudges.
