Hello Zal,

I was rewatching season 3 of TVD and noticed how Elena watched Stefan fought for her and his humanity and still there was no mention by her of him trying to fight compulsion. She was mad at him later as if he turned off the humanity by choice.

You don't think that's a bit of an oversimplification?

You don't think Elena seeing Stefan do this in 3x05

had any bearing on what she does in 3x06?

why does she have so much faith in him? We can't infer that part of it is because of what she witnessed in 3x05?

or 3x07

It has to be directly stated in dialogue?

The lengths she goes to in 3x08-3x09

Sure, she says they'll let him go by the end of the episode but she does anything but that in the episodes that come after.

You don't just see how this is all reciprocity? How it all goes back to what she said in 3x02?

and how she saw Stefan not give up on her so she's now not giving up on him? She needs to verbally refer to 3x05? Why?

I tried to like steroline but the writing was terrible and I didn’t feel the chemistry in the later seasons. I also hate how the writers shat on both Stelena and forwood for them to happen. That being said, I would take it over klaroline any day of the week but I’m still not a fan. Here are some good metas encompassing my feelings:

The scene in 3x07 where Elena locks Stefan up reminds me of the 2x07 scene where Damon locks up Katherine. Could that have been Stelena's closure, at least on Elena's end?

Ghost World is an episode specific in nature. It shows the Stelena friendship and the Delena romance. This is where the love triangle matters because it's also when they show the vervain necklace is unbreakable. Damon and Elena are shown to be unbreakable.

If you want specific parallels... Mason is written alongside Lexi.

Elena is written alongside Alaric.

Damon is written alongside Stefan.

You can then see the parallels just by following along. Like Lexi stabbing Stefan with a single stake multiple times... while Damon has multiple stakes driven through him all at once.

Stefan's chains are written parallel to Damon's vampire seal, so while Stefan can't get out... Damon can't get in.

Elena quite literally refers to Stefan as a ghost, then closes the door on him. As they show what this did to Jeremy and Anna, they show what this means for Stefan and Elena. That's why fans should place their biggest focus on the two Salvatore doors and the difference between them.

These two images show why Elena dies and becomes a vampire. "There is no door number three" because Damon has a doorway, not a door. Human or vampire, Elena is his girlfriend.

Delena is symbolically solidified and proven unbreakable in 3x7.

Omg there are so many!! In no particular order:

1. “This is where your boyfriend whispered to you that he loved you”

2. “I love you, Stefan. Hold on to that.”

3. That time they were playing charades in 5x20 and it was team stelena against Caroline and Damon. You really got to see how much chemistry Elena and Stefan had while Caroline and Damon were getting jealous (one of the best). “5 to 0, 5 to 0 guys”.

4. When Kathrine very first pretended to be Elena but Stefan knew immediately, while Damon had no idea (just saying).

5. “You’re staring” “I’m gazing” “It’s creepy” “It’s romantic”

6. When Stefan ONLY told Elena he killed Enzo in 5x19. He could’ve told Caroline or anyone else, but he chose to tell Elena.

7. 3x07 when Elena and Lexi were working together trying to help Stefan turn his humanity back on.

8. I can’t remember which episode exactly, but when Elena turned into a vampire and Stefan was trying to show her how to hunt animals, and she says “All I can think about is your hands on my body” and Stefan tells her “Everything is heightened. Taste. Smell. Sight. Touch.” then they start to… you know. Like yaaaas that was so cute.

9. In 3x06 when Vicki was trying to kill Elena and set Alaric’s car on fire with Stefan in it. Stefan had his humanity off and Elena could’ve left him to die, instead she saved him.

10. And my absolute favorite…

“I was coming back for you, Stefan. Because I love you. … No matter what happens, it’s the best choice I ever made.”

Hi I love your metas... I read your meta of yhe differences between Caroline and Elena with Stefan w/o humanity anf how Caroline didn't try or really fight for Stefan like Elena did but what about the differences between Stefan without humanity with Caroline and with Elena? Can you write a meta about it... I think even without humanity Stefan acted very different with each.

The differences between Stefan without humanity with Caroline and Stefan without humanity with Elena.

Honestly, what strikes me as the major difference is that with SE, Stefan Without Humanity was still more emotional than when he was Without Humanity during SC.

3x06 and 8x09 parallel each other as does 3x07 and 8x10 because in 3x06/8x09 Stefan is antagonizing Elena and Caroline respectively

and 3x07/8x10 he’s locked up in an attempt for people to get through to him

but in 3x06 and 3x07, I find Stefan more emotionally responsive and tethered to Elena whereas with Steroline, I found him to be quite unmoved.

Even though Stefan ends up insulting Elena at the end of this stare, it’s not a blank, emotionless, you’re pathetic gaze, there’s something there.

In 3x07 when Elena tells him that she still has hope, he almost looks ashamed of his behaviour:

when Caroline explains that she’s still there, Stefan actually looks inconvenienced:

when Stefan mentions how he thought Caroline would’ve left by now

I do think there’s a glimmer of hmm, she’s still here but with Elena, there’s more of an emotional almost desperate response and he continues speaking and mentions her tragic future as if telling her, “I don’t want this for you”:

When Caroline lectures him

he appears genuinely bored

but with Elena

it’s clear she’s triggering something and he can’t have a poker face for at least a fleeting moment, his humanity flickers through:

With Stelena, I don’t think their emotional chemistry ever dissipates.

So SCrs have a post comparing 3x07 with 8x10 and saying that Elena made everything about her, about Stefan feeling anything or he'd lose her, but Caroline makes it about him regardless of their relationship... I know you didn't watch the episode, but what do you think?

I watched that scene and here is where context comes into play.

In 3x01 we learn that Elena has been searching for Stefan all summer, like literally for two or three months basically all she’s been doing is chasing leads.

and she’s been fighting everyone about searching for him:

and in 3x02 she faces werewolves for him:

In 3x03 she hid in a murder closet while Klaus the Original Vampire who thinks she’s dead, is right outside so she can see Stefan and bring him home:

and then Stefan breaks up with her after all of that:

and then in 3x05 she is hit by Klaus:

she watches Stefan tear apart her classmates:

and she’s still there like:

telling him to fight and he just needs to want it bad enough and he’s compelled to bite her which puts her in the hospital:

but in 3x06 she’s right there like:

and then 3x07 comes around and before that moment that the SCers are comparing to 8x10, Elena spends the day learning from Lexi on how to get through to Stefan, it’s about her methods and the things you have to do to get him to feel again:

She watches him suffer, listens to him talk about how he wished her never met her and she just has to take it , like it’s exhausting being there and going through that while at the same time her brother is cheating on her best friend with a ghost, Klaus is trying to make hybrids, like the world is coming apart at the seams and she’s needed elsewhere so she goes where she’s needed and Stefan asks her if she’s giving up, the one person who has been his cheerleader, who has been relentless in getting him back, who has been there no matter how hard he’s tried to push her away:

Like no, I’m still here, I’m still your cheerleader, I’m still stubborn and she also says:

which is fair because she’s done everything, she’s risked her life for him, she brought his dead best friend to help her get through to him, tortured him, pleaded with him, but he needs to want it too, which is a line very much about him as is this:

and this line:

is an appeal to his humanity which makes absolute sense because it has been established and re-established that his humanity is directly linked to Elena.

In 3x01, she’s the one he calls, not Damon, not Caroline, it’s Elena:

In 3x05 he freaks out when Klaus hits her:

he told her she was what kept him from giving up:

Klaus marvels at the love he has for her:

and he fights compulsion for her:

So why wouldn’t Elena appeal to his humanity by threatening to give up on him? After everything she’s done for him why wouldn’t she realize that she’s spent so much of her time and been consumed with getting him back?

When 8x10 rolls around, what has Caroline done for Stefan by that point? Nothing. She’s talked at him.

In 8x08 they haven’t even interacted, she hasn’t been searching for any plans or any methods to help him out of his deal.

In 8x09 she talks at Damon about Elena and dances with him then talks at Stefan then stakes Stefan and throws a ring at him.

In 8x10 she manages to get him chained up and talks at him some more:

She didn’t risk her life for him, she hasn’t spent months searching for him, she’s a vampire so she has eternity on her side while Elena was a human who was being hunted by original vampires, Caroline is just getting started when Elena was invested by the time 3x07 rolled around. They are in two very different places and frankly Elena and Caroline mean two very different things to Stefan. Give me 3x07 over 8x10 any day.

heyy! i have been meaning to ask.....when does stefan actually turn his humanity back on in season three?...cos i don't remember actually seeing it conspicuously happening unless i overlooked or misunderstood something.

i am completely with you on the wickery bridge incident as its context has to be considered and the whole thing cannot be completely used against stelena, but i would like to know if his humanity was on or off....cos he was like super filled with hatred which is technically an emotion....or am i misreading it. i'm not against stefan/stelena in this though; i fully agree with your posts on it in the masterlist, i just wanted to know bit more on the plot there....

so in 3x05 klaus compels stefan to listen to his commands and forces stefan to turn it off

in 3x09, klaus releases stefan from his compulsion

which means that stefan is at liberty to turn his humanity back on

however, it is implied that humanity could sneak its way in despite the switch being flipped

which is indicated in the scene before klaus gives stefan back his freedom

indicated in 3x08

but plotwise, 3x09 is when stefan has the physical ability to turn his switch on or not so instead of letting everything back in, which would be extremely painful, stefan focuses on rage and focuses on revenge, so he’s shutting everything else out, he’s not focusing on guilt, he’s not focusing on despair, he’s not even focusing on joy, he’s choosing fury and vengeance so when 3x11 comes around, he has the capacity to feel but he isn’t in a healthy mindset, he’s chaotic

but when he sees Elena’s face, when he sees how far he’s gone and the line he crossed

that’s when he begins to let other emotions back in, like shame and guilt etc.

that’s when he starts to get his sense of conscience and consequence back and begins working his way back to who he was, which is why this happens

BUT because TVD is so inconsistent, this, right here:

plus, as I mentioned in my posts about 3x06 and 3x07, this right here:

indicates to me that Stefan never stopped loving/caring about Elena with his humanity off or with his mindset the way that it was, he just didn’t have the capacity to navigate that emotion at the time.

Stelena scene in 3x6 was actually really sweet, when Stefan tells Alaric “you can hate it all you want but Elena needs me, I’ll always protect her”. It was so much like s1-2 stefan. Makes me think his humanity wasn’t off at that point? Do you think it came back on when she fell from the bleachers?

I’m always kind of “ehhh” about TVD and humanity because it’s applied inconsistently and it’s characterized inconsistently because they conflate humanity with emotion

but this isn’t actually true, Damon spent over 100 years pining over Katherine and waiting for a comet to release her from the tomb, that’s feeling something. And in season 5 they retconned that he flipped his switch after leaving Enzo to burn and didn’t get a flicker of “humanity” until he saw Lexi in episode 8, which is why he killed her, which means without his humanity he was still in love with Katherine. That directly contradicts the above statement, then he goes on to say this:

which isn’t the same thing as having an instinct not to feel, it’s having no conscience or no sense of morality so that if you do something terrible you don’t care about the consequences.

But again, they conflate emotions with humanity

except Elena clearly feels emotions as a no-humanity vampire

she just doesn’t care if she hurts anyone else’s feelings

But anyway, to your ask, in season 3 Katherine says this

so I just thought that there were moments with Stelena, where you saw Stefan’s humanity trickle in in 3x06 and 3x07
