This dog is in pain. It is not happy at the startline despite the commentary, it looks extremely uncomfortable. Its movement is not healthy and it avoids obstacles. This handler should not have run this dog and they eliminated because it was not able to do the course.

It’s important to not let our desires about the sport trump our dogs’ comfort and safety.

pav would have received a miss call from you, which you regretted later because you knew how worried he gets when he misses a call or a message from you. the minute he heard his ringtone and watched as the light faded from his phone, he panicked when he saw your caller id and immediately called you back, even if it was 1:15 am when you called. you answered, because of course, what could you do? you didn't wanna worry him anymore, you wanted to explain you called randomly because you couldn't sleep, but boy was asking you questions a mile a minute. "babeareyouokayimsosrryicouldntpickupiwassleepingohareyouokaypleasebeokayimissyouandiloveyouandifyoustillneedmeimhereaaaaahpleasetalktomeee" he said that all in one damn breath, and the only thing you could pick up was the "are you okay" and "please talk to me". "i'm sorry, pav, it's just... i called you because i had trouble sleeping." you admitted, a little ashamed of yourself that you called and worried him for such a minor detail, or at least, a minor detail to you. to pav, it was okay to have done that, not a lot of people are in their right state of mind when they're running on a body that's barely slept and can't sleep. if anything, he's happy he was the first one you thought of telling and confiding in about it, it goes to show you trust him and want him to know. "love... it's okay. i'll be here for anything and everything you're going through, even if i can only help at a distance right now, i'll never fail to meet you halfway. i'm spider man, after all, i can do everything for you a thousand times over, just ask me to do something for you, and i'd do it." he told you over the phone, which relieved you so damn much. "so... what's wrong?" he asked again as he caressed your cheek with his palm. "i can't fall asleep." you said briefly in an exhausted manner. he nodded as he looked at your sullen face. "well, tomorrow's a weekend, innit? how about you and i make the night ours?" he suggested with a comforting smirk on his face. you raised an eyebrow at the suggestion. "we can go anywhere you want tonight, do anything you want--my treat." he said as he stood up and extended you a hand. "let me help you live a little more, so what's one night of not sleeping? a whole world of possibilities, is what." he said with a small chuckle as you smiled up at him. "take me away then, spider man." you say as he mutters a, 'wicked' underneath his breath. he holds you close as you cling on to him, and he swings you all around the city; taking deep plunges and high jumps--the wind behind your hair as you two scream into the night in excitement and adventure; he may not be very consistent, but if you ever wanted, he'd stop everything he was doing and take you out for an adventure, just for the two of you in your own world in the night.

Dakar Chaos Roundup: Stage 1

Honda rider Joaquim crashed at the 82km mark, bringing out the medical helicopter early on

Later in the day, Tosha Schareina, leading overall in the bike category, had a fall and broke his wrist

Ross Branch stopped to help him and crossed the line in 16th. In the tradition of the Dakar Rally the time he spent with Schareina was deducted from his time and he ultimately won the stage by more than 10 minutes

Century's Brian Baragwanath was supposed to start first for the car category, but didn't show up in time, prompting Lionel Baud to begin first. About 200m from the startline Baud had an incident with a Russian tourist who was seemingly away from the advised viewing area. The tourist was given medical treatment and has been transported to hospital

Belgian driver Guillame de Mevius won the first stage after starting 32nd, in his maiden Dakar attempt

Carlos Sainz finished 2nd, but claimed that 3 punctures had set him back about 15-20 minutes. Nasser Al-Attiyah, Dakar legend who had a terrible day himself, called him a liar. It's worth pointing out that the drivers only take two spares with them. Sainz says that they managed to get air back into one of the tyres and continue but is not clear on how

Brazilian driver Rodrigo Varela was informed in late December that the cargo ship carrying his Dakar UTV had been attacked by pirates in the red sea (thank you to @huginn01 for alerting me to this). Although the ship eventually escaped the pirates, the detour it was forced to take meant that it would not arrive in time for Dakar. Varela was forced to put together a last minute UTV entry, and has shown up to Dakar without much of the maintenance equipment needed, including a power generator. Varela and his co-driver Bozzano shocked everyone by finishing 5th in the Prologue, and did even better on Saturday, winning Stage 1

Zaku training update

Round of applause for babydog, please: On today's walk I asked for eye contact while three ducks were actively quacking about four feet behind us, and he held it! I had to continuously feed him meatballs the whole time, but he would not have been able to do that two months ago. HUGE improvement.

He also spontaneously offered eye contact several times when ducks were farther away. He was also able to watch them and look away himself without keying. HUGE improvement.

Place training is going well. Indoors in zero distractions, I can leave his sight for five seconds. Outdoors, he can hold his Place while I walk up to 15 feet away (the length of my long line) and turn my back, jump around, etc. People walking by doesn't bother him. We've practiced at the farmer's market, but not in high-squirrel areas. Still working up to that.

In agility we've been working on startline stays, explosive "break" from startline stays, short sequences with turns, and baby 2o2o. Trainer is going to introduce baby running contacts soon. He graduated from 4-inch jumps to 8-inch jumps. We've gone as far as we can with 2x2s until he's mature, so I'm just maintaining it for now.

Still an asshole about playing with the other household dogs, but he takes correction very well from the mean bitches. He had a super fun chase game with two of them a couple weeks ago. As long as he has his beloved jolly ball in his mouth, he is very happy to be chased and doesn't do any grabbing bullshit.

He also has chosen to play fetch with me while the greyhound puppies are out. They wander around and he just dodges around them. This makes me really happy because goddamn have I worked hard on this.

Still doing paired hides with nosework. He really enjoys it, but is working on keeping his brains while searching.

Muzzle training is going well. The Goal is for him to shove his face in as soon as I hold it in front of him. Right now he is willingly putting his face in after a moment of thought. He doesn't love the feel of it on his face, but he does love cheez whiz.

Up next:

Introduce ecollar in a couple weeks with my trainer. Transition to offleash walks.

Box training at race practice. The Goal is for him to dive in the instant his collar is released. Once he's enthusiastically loading into the box, we'll add the muzzle.

Separate from box training, running with the muzzle.

Place training around squirrels. And ducks. And cats.
