Saujani added that removing the books not only hinders visibility for women in technology fields, but also diversity in the industry, as many of the protagonists in the series are young girls of color.
"You cannot be what you cannot see," she said. "They don't want girls to learn how to code because that's a way to be economically secure."

Book Blurb: We all remember our favorite childhood classics, like The Giving Tree and The Velveteen Rabbit. Wink explores those classics through the lens of YA fantasy and science fiction. Featuring stories from bestselling and award-winning authors, including Kendare Blake, Leah Cypess, Stacia Deutsch, David Gerrold, Nancy Holder, Alethea Kontis, Jonathan Maberry, Seanan McGuire, and Maggie Stiefvater, Wink takes us on a wonderful romp through our favorite childhood stories.

A fun collection of stories that is inspired by a new take on classics! I thought they were all so unique and fun to read and I loved that this collection had drawings in each story, It's a great way to explore new takes on some of your favorite childhood stories.

Book Birthday for The Hitherto Secret Experiments of Marie Curie
Happy book birthday to THE HITHERTO SECRET EXPERIMENTS OF MARIE CURIE!!!
I'm so thrilled to have a short story in this YA anthology, alongside a slew of awesome authors! It's a collection of stories and poems about teen Marie Curie's dark adventures, published by Blackstone Publishing and edited by Bryan Thomas Schmidt and Henry Herz. In my story, “Experiments with Fire,” Marie Curie and the ghost of her sister Zofia confront a dragon. I had so much fun writing it, and I'm so happy it's out in the world!

Wait, there's tangled /books/?
Yep! when Season One was out, Disney actually made an effort to publicise the series, and there were several books that came out:
Before Ever After by Stacia Deutsch - a junior novelization of the pilot movie
Tales of Rapunzel 1: Secrets Unlocked - a junior novelization of “What the Hair?!” and “Great Expotations”
Tales of Rapunzel 2: Opposites Attract - a junior novelization of “Cassandra v. Eugene” and “In Like Flynn”
Tales of Rapunzel 3: Friends and Enemies - a junior novelization of “Max’s Enemy” and “Pascal’s Tale”
Queen For a Day by Brandi Dougherty - a junior novelization of the Season One mid-season
Tales of Rapunzel 4: The Search for the Sundrop - a junior novelization of “The Quest for Varian” and “The Alchemist Returns”
Rapunzel and the Lost Lagoon by Leila Howland - an original story that takes place before and during Season One (not technically canon to the series)
Rapunzel and the Vanishing Village by Leila Howland - an original story that takes place between Season One and Season Two (not technically canon to the series)
Rapunzel’s Guide to All Things Brave, Creative & Fun by Suzanne Francis - a fully-illustrated book filled to the brim with a huge variety of activities, from arts and crafts to outdoor sports
My First Year as a Princess - a fully-illustrated pseudo-journal that loosely covers the events of Season One. (Not a replica of Rapunzel’s journal)
The Friendship Mix-Up by Jimmy Gownley - an original story graphic novel (not technically canon to the series)
The Write Story by Jimmy Gownley - an original story graphic novel (not technically canon to the series)
And all of these are not including the plethora of coloring and activity books, nor the comic book series.

FRIDAY READS: FRIENDSHIP DAY
Take a moment to hug your friends on Friendship Day!  In the U.S., Friendship Day is August 6, but any day is a good one to show your friends how much you appreciate them.
Below is a list of books for all ages about friends and friendships, and how they make us better (even if sometimes those friendships don’t stay in tact).
SWING TIME by Zadie Smith
Two brown girls dream of being dancers—but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It’s a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either.
THE JOY LUCK CLUB by Amy Tan
In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan’s debut novel—now widely regarded as a modern classic—examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between these four women and their American-born daughters.
PIECES OF HAPPINESS by Anne Ostby
Just published this month!
A novel of five lifelong friends who, in their sixties, decide to live together on a cocoa farm in Fiji, where they not only start a chocolate business but strengthen their friendships and rediscover themselves.
MY BRILLIANT FRIEND by Elena Ferrante
Beginning in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, Ferrante’s four-volume story spans almost sixty years, as its protagonists, the fiery and unforgettable Lila, and the bookish narrator, Elena, become women, wives, mothers, and leaders, all the while maintaining a complex and at times conflictual friendship. Book one in the series follows Lila and Elena from their first fateful meeting as ten-year-olds through their school years and adolescence.
THE FIREBRAND AND THE FIRST LADY by Patricia Bell-Scott
A finalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and longlisted for the National Book Award, The Firebrand and the First Lady is the riveting history, two decades in the making, of how a brilliant writer-turned-activist and the first lady of the United States forged an enduring friendship that helped to alter the course of race and racism in America.
THE FRIENDSHIP CODE #1 by Stacia Deutsch
Loops, variables, input/output – Lucy can’t wait to get started with the new coding club at school. Finally, an after school activity that she’s really interested in. But Lucy’s excitement turns to disappointment when she’s put into a work group with girls she barely knows. All she wanted to do was make an app that she believes will help someone very special to her.   Suddenly, Lucy begins to get cryptic coding messages and needs some help translating them. She soon discovers that coding – and friendship – takes time, dedication, and some laughs!
BAD APPLE by Edward Hemingway
When Mac, an apple, meets Will, a worm, they become fast friends, teaching each other games and even finishing each other’s sentences. But apples aren’t supposed to like worms, and Mac gets called “rotten” and “bad apple.” At first, Mac doesn’t know what to do—it’s never easy standing up to bullies–but after a lonely day without Will, Mac decides he’d rather be a bad apple with Will than a sad apple without.
TOGETHER FOREVER: TRUE STORIES OF AMAZING ANIMAL FRIENDSHIPS by Mary Quattlebaum
A fluffy chicken and a pup on wheels? A goat and a donkey who are inseparable? Puppy and cheetah best friends? This new chapter book features all kinds of heartwarming, awwwww-inspiring—and completely true—stories about animal friendships. It’s so funny, sweet, and filled with engaging photos, fast facts, and fascinating sidebars, that you can’t help but want to cuddle up and read about these unlikely pairings and animal best buddies.

Book Review: Rise of the Guardians Novelization Adapted by Stacia Deutsch
Book Review: Rise of the Guardians Novelization Adapted by Stacia Deutsch
7/10
This book is a good novelization, and it is clearly for children. The writing is simple and easy to read, the characters are portrayed well, and the magic is still there.
From Sandy’s good dreams to Tooth’s collection of memories, from North’s wonder to Bunny’s hope, the joy of childhood shines brightly. This fresh take on familiar characters is a delightful change, and it shines with magic.

Island Treasures: Growing Up in Cuba by Alma Flor Ada (Ages 8-10, Simon & Schuster) These true autobiographical tales from renowned Hispanic author and educator Alma Flor Ada are filled with family love and traditions, secrets and deep friendships, and a gorgeous, moving picture of the island of Cuba, where Alma Flor grew up. Told through the eyes of a child, a whole world comes to life in these pages: the blind great-grandmother who never went to school but whose wisdom and generosity overflowed to those around her; the hired hand Samoné, whose love for music overcame all difficulties; the beloved dance teacher who helped sustain young Alma Flor through a miserable year in school; her dear and daring Uncle Medardo, who bravely flew airplanes; and more.
El libro de la vida: La novelizacion by Stacia Deutsch (Ages 8-9, Simon & Schuster) ¡Manolo está tratando de romper con las tradiciones de su familia y crear su propio destino en este recuento en español de la película El libro de la vida!
Con carino, Amalia by Alma Flor Ada, Gabriel M. Zubizarreta (Ages 8-10, Simon & Schuster) When life seems unfair, the loving, wise words of Amalia’s abuelita have a way of making everything a little bit brighter. Amalia finds great comfort in times shared with her grandmother: cooking, listening to stories and music, learning, and looking through her treasured box of family cards. But when another loss racks Amalia’s life, nothing makes sense anymore. In her sorrow, will Amalia realize just how special she is, even when the ones she loves are no longer near?
Cesar Chavez: A Hero for Everyone by Gary Soto   (Ages 9-12, Simon & Schuster) Cesar Chavez, a migrant worker himself, was helping Mexican Americans work together for better wages, for better working conditions, for better lives. No one thought they could win against the rich and powerful growers. But Cesar was out to prove them wrong -- and that he did.
The Surrender Tree/El arbol de la rendicion: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle (Ages 12-15, Macmillan) An acclaimed poet has created a breathtaking portrait through poetry of Cuba's struggle for freedom, in both English and Spanish.
La Linea by Ann Jaramillo (Ages 12-14, Macmillan)  Miguel has dreamed of joining his parents in California since the day they left him behind in Mexico six years, eleven months, and twelve days ago. On the morning of his fifteenth birthday, Miguel's wait is over. Their money gone and their hopes nearly dashed, Miguel and his sister have no choice but to hop the infamous mata gente as it races toward the border. As they cling to the roof of the speeding train, they hold onto each other, and to their dreams. But they quickly learn that you can't always count on dreams―even the ones that come true.
The Devil’s Highway: A True Story by Luis Alberto Urrea (Young Adult, Hachette) Describes the harrowing May 2001 attempt of twenty-six men to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, a region know as the Devil's Highway, detailing their harrowing ordeal and battle for survival against impossible odds on a trek that cost fourteen lives.
In the Country We Love by Diane Guerrero (Young Adult, Macmillan) Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just fourteen years old on the day her parents and brother were arrested and deported while she was at school. Born in the U.S., Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life for herself and a successful acting career, without the support system of her family. In the Country We Love is a moving, heartbreaking story of one woman's extraordinary resilience in the face of the nightmarish struggles of undocumented residents in this country.
